[Bug 1913869] Re: Invalid regular expressions describing Debian package file naming convention

2021-02-05 Thread Jarno Suni
BTW it is confusing that uppercase letters are allowed for package name
in .deb filename, but not in the package name itself:

[Bug 1913869] [NEW] Invalid regular expressions describing Debian package file naming convention

2021-01-30 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

In chapter 2.5.8. table Table 2.16 there must not be commas in the
regular expressions unless comma is a valid character in that name
component. Besides if '-' is valid, it should be the last one
enumerated; otherwise it is a metacharacter. Also be more specific that
these are POSIX Extended Regular Expressions. The bug occurs probably in
all language versions, but I provide a patch for the English one.

Same valid characters apply in Ubuntu package naming, too, right?

Oh, but user is not guided to use debian for bug reporting beforehand,
but to use launchpad.net:

$ apt-cache show dialog | grep -i bugs
Bugs: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug

and

$ man dialog | grep -A 2 -i bugs
BUGS
   Perhaps.

Besides, the issue is present in version 1.3-20190808 (focal).

launch whiskers-menu) and type (part of) the name.

[Bug 673119] Re: dash "set -e" breaks "trap action INT"

2020-07-06 Thread Jarno Suni
Output by dash 0.5.10.2-6:
3
^CIgnored 1
Ignored 2
Back
EXIT

bash 5.0.3 works the same way.

To get the output you want, you can use the following code:
--
#!/bin/sh
#set -e

trap '' INT
trap 'echo EXIT' EXIT

sorry() {
  echo "Ignored 1"; echo "Ignored 2"
  sleep 1
  echo Back
}

for i in 3 2 1; do
echo "$i"
(
trap 'sorry; exit 0' INT
sleep 1
) # || :
done

echo OUT
-

If you use bash, instead of dash, it would work even if "set -e" was
used and "trap '' INT" was not used. If "set -e" was used with dash, you
would have to uncomment "|| :" to make it work.

[Bug 892317] Re: set -e reverses order of signal handlers

2020-07-06 Thread Jarno Suni
The behavior seems to have changed in later version. I tested dash 0.5.10.2-6.
There EXIT trap is not run at all, if -e is used, and you use Ctrl-C. But if
you remove the 'exit 2' from the signal trap, EXIT trap will be run regardless
of -e setting, when you press Ctrl-C. That is not intuitive. So I think EXIT
trap should be run even in case of -e. However, if you do not need custom exit
status for the signal trap, you could just remove the exit builtin.

[Bug 1880666] Re: Power management: does not suspend

2020-06-21 Thread Jarno Suni
No, I would not waste my time on that.

** Also affects: xfce4-screensaver (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Summary changed:

- Power management: does not suspend
+ Suspend does work only after half minute delay.

** Description changed:

  I am using Xubuntu 20.04.
  xfce4-session-logout --suspend
- exits with 0, but does not suspend. Same thing, if I choose suspend from menu
(but it may lock screen depending on settings).
-
- Reproduceable: sometimes
+ exits with 0, but suspends only after long delay. This happens only if I have
xfce4-screensaver running, even if it is set not to lock screen on suspend.

[Bug 1880666] Re: Power management: does not suspend

2020-05-28 Thread Jarno Suni
I made a couple of tests by Xubuntu Core 20.04 live USB (downloaded from
https://unit193.net/xubuntu/core/). First time was by default settings
i.e. 'lock screen when system is going to sleep' checked - I think that
is not a good default setting for live - and the other time when it was
not checked. Both times it did not suspend. The former did blank screen
immediately, the other one after delay of several seconds. No keyboard
activity did have an effect so I had to use power button.

Yes, it still happens on Xubuntu 18.04, nvidia driver, sync to vblank
set in OpenGL settings in NVIDIA X Server Settings. But I expect it to
be better with 19.10 (Xfce 4.14) when using compositor. Chromium Version
80.0.3987.163 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu , running on Ubuntu 18.04

Why not tie history per terminal tab? I guess shells HISTFILE variable
could be used for that.

[Bug 1550898]

2020-04-12 Thread Jarno Suni
Boris, your patch sound good. I did not try it yet, because I am not
used to building Xfce software from source.

Another approach is that terminal has its own session management
independent of xfce session like many web browsers do, so it would
remember tabs, current directories and history for each tab. Possibly
user could save several sessions and open them. Maybe that would not
work well together with xfce session, though.

[Bug 1631715] Re: Password required twice returning from suspend

2020-01-29 Thread Jarno Suni
Stephen, do you use xfce4-screensaver? Is the other lock screen from
light-locker. You do not have to use both. Check your autostarts.
Purging light-locker changes power manager settings UI, but there is
still checkbox for locking.

[Bug 1792085] Re: MTP not working/very slow on Bionic

2020-01-29 Thread Jarno Suni
It is odd that this slowness happens with some directories, but not with
others. For example it happens on a directory with 7 files; file names
consist of letters, '-', digits and '.'. ls command on that directory
takes about 5 minutes. But there are other directories (where there are
more or less files) with which there is no such delay. Do you have any
clue why is this?

[Bug 1802138]

2020-01-07 Thread Jarno Suni
I do not see a problem in having even longer delay than a second. But,
using "sleep 1; xset dpms force off" has still the problem that user may
accidentally touch something so that display will become on again.
Besides, it effectively disables Presentation mode user may have set
using Power manager's panel item.

A better solution would be to change DPMS settings for the time such a
screen locker is running to enable turning display off after reasonable
time of inactivity from user, and restore previous settings, when user
unlocks. This is possible by using a wrapper script.

I have actually introduced such a version of xflock4 in bug report
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10217
attachment
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=7254
in 2017. It uses 15 second delay, but an initial delay of 1 second could be
added.

That script has other modifications such as added screensavers and
lockers and optionally using display power management for the locker
user may have set in Xfconf. The script can be simplified notably, if
hacking the DPMS settings for general lock command set in Xfconf is left
out.

I have never got any feedback about the script.

Note: proper screensavers (that have a daemon running when lock command
is called) should handle DPMS by themselves.

gawk has -e option, but it is not installed by default at least in
Xubuntu, so (very) old mawk may be used.

Solution: Either use "awk --" instead of "awk -e" or use "gawk -e" and
put gawk as dependency.

[Bug 1796081] Re: dpkg frontend locking

2019-12-25 Thread Jarno Suni
I think it can be made to work. I do not know how apt/dpkg is
implemented, but I made an example by Bash:

script.sh file:

#!/bin/bash
#
exec {var}>/tmp/lock
flock -n $var || { echo already locked; exit 1; }
LOCK= /path/to/subscript.sh  # edit this path

subscript.sh file:

#!/bin/bash
#
[[ -v LOCK ]] && { kill $PPID; sleep 3; } # kill the caller
exec {var}>/tmp/lock
flock -n $var && echo was not locked || echo was locked

The subscript.sh above kills the caller (if LOCK variable is set in its
environment). The subscript shows the lock is set even thereafter until the
subscript finishes.

Anyway I am missing something: Even if I lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock or
/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend this way (instead of locking /tmp/lock),
that does not prevent installing a package by apt install or dpkg
--install. But if I run Synaptic package manager by pkexec
"/usr/sbin/synaptic", it locks the files and prevents installing by apt
or dpkg from outside.

[Bug 1796081] Re: dpkg frontend locking

2019-12-22 Thread Jarno Suni
I do not see why we need this new frontend lock. If there are higher
level frontends, they may have to do some locking before calling apt,
but they would have to release the locks before calling apt, and then
there is race condition. Why not just use the old dpkg lock and make the
package managers ignore the lock, if there is DPKG_LOCKED in
environment?

[Bug 1857018] Re: apt-get: Can not downgrade dependencies or anything with -t

2019-12-20 Thread Jarno Suni
Well, actually I have thought a lot about this downgrading thing. I have
contributed to ppa-purge and even made a PPA of that:
https://launchpad.net/~jarnos/+archive/ubuntu/ppa-purge
I still have to fix it to keep auto installed packages auto installed, which is
not very difficult.

I just thought of an alternative way to downgrade the manually installed
packages of a PPA or such together with their dependencies to given
distribution, but there would still be the task to remove the packages
of the PPA that are not needed.

[Bug 1857018] Re: apt-get: Can not downgrade dependencies or anything with -t

2019-12-19 Thread Jarno Suni
So there is no short way to downgrade the depending packages to the
versions available from the current repositories retaining packages'
auto/manual install status? That is something that needs to be done, if
one e.g. disables a PPA and wants to use the packages from the default
repositories, instead.

I think it would be good, if apt could downgrade the dependencies, too.
I reported a related bug #1857018.

[Bug 1856445] [NEW] Cannot import secret keys

2019-12-15 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

I exported secret keys by
gpg --export-secret-keys --export-options backup >file
and later tried to restore it by
gpg --homedir . --import --import-options restore file

but gpg just creates pubring.kbx, not secret keys are imported.
To its output includes:
gpg: key /: error sending to agent: No such
file or directory
gpg: error building skey array: No such file or directory
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg:   imported: 1
gpg:   secret keys read: 1

Is there a workaround? Wouldn't it be easier just to backup ~/.gnupg

[Bug 1855350] [NEW] Will not logout or shutdown form guest-session

2019-12-05 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

This is in Xubuntu 19.10, a regression from 18.04. xfce4-session
4.14.0-0ubuntu1. I enabled guest-session and logged in that. But there I
can not log out or even shut down using the graphical way at least
unless put Action Buttons on the panel and choose Switch User. If I run
"xfce4-session-logout -l" I get error dialog saying:

Received error while trying to log out

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs:Type of message,
"(yb)", does not match expected type"(b)"

And in standard output there is: "Received error while trying to log
out, error was GDBus.Error:org.xfce.SessionManager.Error.Failed: Session
manager must be in idle state when requesting a shutdown"

[Bug 1742912] Re: Please confine guest sessions again

2019-12-05 Thread Jarno Suni
I installed gnome-terminal and got 'unconfined'. So I could view the
home directory of another user, but if the directories had no
permissions for Other group, I could not view the contents in guest
session. So I think a better solution than disabling guest sessions is
to make proper default permissions for directories under /home
directory.

2019-12-04 Thread Jarno Suni
I tested this on Xubuntu 18.04.3, and xfce4-terminal gives the expected
output (like xterm as well). I do not see how this should depend on the
terminal application used. I guess it is pretty safe to use guest
session in Xubuntu.

[Bug 1760068] Re: Wrong resolution at unlock screen

2019-09-29 Thread Jarno Suni
Oh, I found alternative way that works for GRUB menu resolution and
console resolution, too, and no need to create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Edit /etc/default/grub accordingly:
GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024,auto
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep,text

You may want to or have to use a different resolution than 1280x1024.

Thereafter "sudo update-grub" and reboot.

[Bug 1760068] Re: Wrong resolution at unlock screen

2019-09-29 Thread Jarno Suni
I used
sudo nvidia-xconfig
to create initial /etc/X11/xorg.conf file like told in #18

Then added

Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia-340/xorg"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
#   ModulePath "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xorg"
EndSection

in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
The last directory is empty, so I guess that is why it is ok to comment it out.
Works for the login screen, but other TTY:s have small resolution.
