[Bug 1831384] [NEW] .desktop files not working in Ubuntu 19.04 Gnome

2019-06-02 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Public bug reported:

I use several instances of Firefox, that I usually launch from various
launchers.

For example, I have a `firefox-test.desktop` file in
`~/.local/share/applications`, that contains:

```
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Firefox-Test
StartupWMClass=firetest
Exec=firefox --new-instance --no-remote -P Test --class firetest %u
Icon=firefox-developer-icon
Terminal=false
Type=Application
MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/vnd.mozilla.xul+xml;text/mml;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;
StartupNotify=true
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
Keywords=web;browser;internet;pentest;
Actions=new-window;new-private-window;
```

It worked for ages, in many DE, including GNOME in 18.04.

But, in 19.04, clicking on my launchers does nothing.

On the other hand, the commands works from the terminal:

```
firefox --new-instance --no-remote -P Test --class firetest
```

[Bug 1220146] Re: Need support for new Ralink Wifi card - Mediatek 7630 [14c3:7630]

2014-07-14 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Moreover, never ever give access to your system to an unknown person.
Even if he looks nice and helpful. It is a sane best practice to keep
away from troubles.

Keshara, as a person who is willing to help, you should even not have
asked for it. There are many ways to help him without a shell access.

Payo, if stuff here looks difficult for you, you would better be patient and
wait for a kernel update from Ubuntu.
Or just change of hardware (WiFi card). Due to this trouble and several more, I
personally ended switching my lame HP laptop for a Thinkpad (S540). Now
everything works flawlessly and out of the box.

2014-04-19 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
The simple fact to switch to a TTY reactivate the screen. There are also no
issues in other windows managers than Gnome (e.g. Openbox), xrandr works well.
So probably neither an Xorg nor a driver issue.
It seems to be Gnome-related.

[Bug 935350] [NEW] Headphones/Analog Output switching all the time and causing sound to skip

2012-02-18 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Public bug reported:

I have the exact same problem that this person described:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/91947/headphones-analog-output-switching-like-crazy
Thanks to his tip, I could workaround the issue after believe it was a pure EMF
or PSU issue.

I am on Ubuntu 11.10 64 bits. According to the first reporter, it is
also present in 12.04.

I also have an ASUS Sabertooth 990fx motherboard and I am using the
integrated sound chip.

It happens that, while playing a sound, the sound server constantly switches
between Analog Output and Headphone.
It causes a big popping noise and other interferences.

It happens whenever the speakers are plugged into the Lime and Black
connectors which are respectively Front and Rear Speakers Out.

The only workaround is to use the Gray or Orange connectors which are normally
used in 8 channel mode for respectively Side Speaker Out and
Center/Subwoofer.
When the stereo speakers are plugged into these connectors, the sound is stable.

I guess it is a driver problem.

[Bug 869408] Re: gnome-shell hangs when switching to a running VMWare Player Window in Activities menu

2012-01-18 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
I can confirm this bug too, which happens very often only when I use
VMWare Workstation (and a Windows guest with vmware-tools, as far as I
can tell).

I now use the Nouveau driver.

Most of time, I switch to a TTY and reload gnome-shell with :
$ killall -1 gnome-shell

But sometimes, it is either too unstable or gnome-shell crashes.
I restart it :
$ gnome-shell -d :0

Note that when I use the Nvidia proprietary driver, the TTY also hangs
and in such a case I have no other choice than unproperly reboot the
computer.

[Bug 764330] Re: Move window annoying slow with compiz

2011-11-16 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
I didn't fix anything for me.
By the way, I started to use Gnome-shell and the windows are not lagging at all
there (tough there are other graphical glitches, thanks ATI for the great
driver). :(
It probably confirms the laggy windows is caused by a specific issue between
Compiz/Unity and ATI.

[Bug 764330] Re: Move window annoying slow with compiz

2011-08-16 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
I found an interesting behavior with my Nova X600 laser mouse.
It has some buttons on it to switch between modes with different frequencies.

Whenever I press it, window moving becomes smooth for a few second (approx
30s). Then, it becomes extremely laggy again.
I can reproduce it all the time. Note that it doesn't matter if I change the
frequency up or down. The only fact of changing seems sufficient to reset
this lag problem.

Otherwise, like almost everyone here, every thing else is smooth, and
the compiz settings have no effect.

[Bug 607560] Re: jbd2 writing block every 5 - 10 seconds, preventing disk spin-down and making noise

2011-06-12 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
I just came back - after a painful migration - from btrfs which, at the
time, sucks even much more (extreme slugishness with many applications,
continuous activity too and no fsck).

Are we still left with ext3 or XFS for a decent FS?

[Bug 637568] Re: Ping imap locks up evolution for ~30 sec

2011-06-02 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
As far as I am concerned, it has been solved using the IMAP+ protocol, as soon
as Evolution started to support it.
It can be reproduced anytime using the basic IMAP protocol though, so I am not
sure if it is an expected behavior or a workaround.

Anyway, I definitely adopted Thunderbird which doesn't have such an
issue and is much faster in any case.

[Bug 476734] Re: Memory leak from libpcap on Karmic Koala

I am having a huge memory leak on my 64 bits system using either tcpdump or

eaten.

[Bug 589855] [NEW] segfault only when compiled on Lucid

2010-06-04 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Public bug reported:

The attached code compiles allright (gcc test.c -o test) but when I run
it segfaults :

% ./test example.com 80
toto
phocean.net
resolv: phocean.net
zsh: segmentation fault  ./test phocean.net 80

Debug session (attached) shows that the resolv function is working as
expected, but something on the stack gets crafted and it is unable to
return to the main section.

The weired thing is that it compiles and works very well on all others distro I
had as virtual machines : Fedora 13 32bits  64bits, openSUSE 11.2 64bits and
Debian 5 32bits.
I also took the binary from one of these VM and ran it on Ubuntu, and it worked.
The binary from Ubuntu crashes anywhere else.

That's why I presume it is libc6 related.

[Bug 583210] Re: unstable wireless with iwlagn

2010-06-02 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Sorry but I am not a native English speaker so such misunderstandings are
likely to happen.
I don't have data from the kernel crash for now, but if I get it, I will fill
another bug.

Concerning this bug, I indeed found a workaround, but I don't think it
is acceptable.

Hardware that works with any other OS should work with Ubuntu Lucid the same
way. What is this different ? Why did it fail that I had to reconfigure my wifi
router ?
So the issue is still here, sure not high priority, but it requires more
investigation and I think to be kept open in case more people have the same
problem.

[Bug 583210] Re: unstable wireless with iwlagn

2010-06-01 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Invalid? Hmm not so sure. If so why wireless had always worked fine with
openSUSE 11.x, Windows Vista, etc.
Even though I found a workaround, the behaviour is not normal and may hide more
problem (I encountered a few kernel crash while unloading / reloading the
iwlagn module).

So please don't mark it as invalid.

DTIM intervals (higher than default, to reduce the number of packets
sent).

After I resetted these parameters to their default values (respectively 100 and
1), the stability issues vanished.
Note that I spent a lot of time trying all possible settings (signal,
encryption, power) on the Tomato firware of my Linksys, so I am 100% certain
that these parameters are the only causes of my problems.

Something must have changed with the new driver (not the firmware
because it is the same on all distros around) in the kernel, that makes
it more sensitive to exotic configurations.

[Bug 583210] Re: unstable wireless with iwlagn

2010-05-28 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
The bug is still there and extremely annoying. I have tried all possible tips I
found on forums or previous bug reports :
 - deactivate hardware encryption (modprobe iwlagn swcrypto=1)
 - tried all kind of encryption combinations (WPA2 only, WPA only, TKIP, AES,
WPA+WPA2, etc, except WEP)

I can't understand why there is such a regression with such old and
common hardware.

[Bug 583210] [NEW] unstable wireless with iwlagn

2010-05-20 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Public bug reported:

Wireless had always (for years) worked great on my laptop (Thinkpad T61), until
I switched from openSUSE to Ubuntu Lucid few days ago.
Since then, my wifi connection has been very unstable, always flapping.
Randomly but as frequent as every 3 or 4 minutes, it disconnects and
reconnects. It is of course extremely annoying.

My card :
% lspci | grep Wireless
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN
[Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

Please find the daemon, dmesg and syslog logs attached below.

I tried installing the backported modules without any more luck.

Thank you in advance for your help. This is the only issue I am having
so far on this great distro :)

[Bug 269904] Re: Screen refresh problems with nvidia on intrepid

2009-02-27 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
I am not using Ubuntu anymore, but the issue has just been solved on openSUSE
with the latest 180.29 driver.
No need to deactivate loose binding anymore. Hurrah !
Unfortunately I am not able to tell you what solved the issue, because it seems
that some people with the same driver still have the problem.
But the good news is there is a solution ! Good luck !

[Bug 131885] Re: Backlight no longer under my control on battery

2008-03-15 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
David, I have sometimes experienced what you mention (in a train), but I
think this is an issue we can live with.

In that case the problem is not g-p-m but the power source. I think that
there is no easy way to deal with it, and we should not have something
too complex for such some extreme and rare situation.

On what basis will you consider a change is frequent or not ? It might
be an issue in some cases.

I would be happy if, in a first time, the previous functions - quite
more urgent - are implemented.

Concerning the timeout your talk about, I believe that it already exists
: invalid_timeout in the gconf parameters.

[Bug 131885] Re: Backlight no longer under my control on battery

2008-03-14 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Thank you for this patch, quite an improvement.

However I disagree with the point of view of Keenan, I think the big
issue is that the gnome brightness setting is still not synchronized
with the hardware setting (set with the keyboard).

This is pretty confusing for the user to set brightness to 100% with the
keyboard, and that every time g-p-m is doing some action, it resets it to,
let's say, 50%.
Both should be synchronized, there should be a unique way to set the system
brightness.

It is less annoying if you use the brightness applet, because it seems
to prevent g-p-m to take over the hardware setting.

But again my point of view is that such an applet should even not exist : there
are 3 now ways to set the brightness !!!
And also, using 14 Mo of RAM for a usability workaround is not acceptable.

[Bug 131885] Re: Backlight no longer under my control on battery

2008-03-14 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
I guess what I think is joining what Kyle says, but to be sure I clarify
what I meant :

There are 2 different settings :
 - the defaults values that g-p-m applies when the power state changes
 - the current value in each power state, which is temporary for the current
state

The scenario :

g-p-m is set to 100% brightness on AC and 25% on battery.

I am on AC, and change the brightness level using the keyboard to 70%.

I switch to battery. The brightness becomes 25%. Using the keyboard, I
adjust it to 5%.

I plug the AC in. The brightness becomes 100%.

I plug it out again. The brightness is back to 25%.

What do you think about it ?

I don't have an ambient light sensor, so I have no experience using it.

[Bug 200960] [NEW] gnome-screensaver fails marking the session as idle

2008-03-11 Thread Jean-Christophe Baptiste
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I have seen this bug for months.

Randomly but very often, Gnome-Screensaver seems to freeze and stop
marking the session as idle.

As a result :
 - the screensaver never appears;
 - and the most annoying, gnome-power-manager never suspend anything, because
it is based on the gnome-screensaver idle marking.

So I often found my computer screen had stayed on for hours, until I use
this quick and dirty sequence in a script that I start every 30 min with
cron :

#!/bin/bash
export DISPLAY=:0.0

killall gnome-screensaver
sleep 1
gnome-screensaver

I don't know how to provide more information as there is no visible
crash. Please let me know how I can help. It would be great if this
problem were seriously investigated, I think it is an important issue.
