[Bug 1760876] Re: DKMS driver builds fail with: Cannot use CONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION=y, please install libelf-dev, libelf-devel or elfutils-libelf-devel
Hey Brad, I confirmed the fix on 2018-04-09 (but didn't add a tag). Is the current fix the same? I don't have the same hardware to recreate now. I can confirm the last kernel update from Bionic's " -proposed" last week did not present this issue. Thanks! Here is the workaround for people coming into this bug with Two Factor Auth set. [Bug 858122] Re: incomplete migration to /run (shutdown script order has been demolished)
It looks like I'm having the "Waiting for network configuration" issue as well, but while an annoyance, I've ignored it until today. I figured it was related to an extra NIC being unconfig'd. I just config'd LACP and I've still got it, so went hunting for a bug. I checked and I've got the symlinks. The weird thing is the symlink for /var/run to /run was created ~2.5 hours ago when I last did an update/reboot, while the other is from my upgrade to 11.10. Not sure if that is significant. Upgrade path natty --> oneric ls -l /var/run /var/lock lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 2011-10-10 21:13 /var/lock -> /run/lock lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2011-10-24 19:48 /var/run -> /run I didn't see this on an Ubuntu Server with 4 NIC's LACP'd going from Natty to Oneric, nor on my Kubuntu laptop, just on this desktop. [Bug 576352] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 hangs/locks up often
While I was running 10.04, this ceased being a *consistent* issue after the 256.xx.xx drivers were added to the SWAT repository. It appeared to me like the GPU clock throttling started working more consistently. (http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu). After upgrading to 10.10 Beta 1, (and keeping the swat repo active), I continued to enjoy stability *overall*... I finally found the workaround for complete stability, which was to just throttle the clock on the GPU to the minimum using information I found here: http://linux.aldeby.org/nvidia-powermizer-powersaving.html. My graphics performance for work related apps doesn't appear to have been impacted really. (and frankly do I really need a 1.2Ghz clock on my Laptop's GPU???) I updated /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the following: Section "Device" Identifier"Default Device" Option "Coolbits" "1" "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2223; PowerMizerLevel=0x3; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x3" Driver "nvidia" EndSection My teammate running Windows 7 on his W510 had the same but much worse problem initially. Using my driver experience on Ubuntu, I had him upgrade to the 256 beta drivers, which stabilized him for a month. However, his onboard Nvidia card finally burned out and his systemboard was replaced last Friday. From my experience and watching his, it seems to indicate that this could be a combination hardware/driver defect rather than a Linux/Ubuntu defect. -- Ubuntu 10.04 hangs/locks up often https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576352 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@ scholli re: (Data and Gnome3) Hmmm, I think we just agreed. :) Woohoo. Gnome3 is a big carrot of motivation to enable the moving the buttons to the left and not invoke the "pitchforks". In fact I would imagine some pitchforks would get invoked if the buttons didn't shift with Gnome 3 due to it being so "left heavy". Like I said, my wife didn't object with Gnome3 and buttons on the left, but was quite angry with Gnome2 and the same change. She's my "average test user", in fact about as average as it gets. I'm not totally sure how others use their mouse, but keep in mind I rest my mouse a lot off center to the right, or at the bottom of the screen out of the way of the text I'm reading, or FAR right with the scroll bar. (guess the scroll bar needs to move?) That really doesn't change too much in Gnome3, and I don't necessarily care that much about how efficient my mousing is. :) But with Gnome 3 you're always headed up to the left corner to switch windows anyway, and having the close button up there simplifies the thought process a bit, without thinking about it changing anything. It just makes sense. Hence my preference for left buttons on Gnome 3. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@scholli Open my mind? With all due respect, I'm very open, but *likely* more experienced on this type of thing. I'm running Ubuntu and Kubuntu and pushing Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu and I'm an MCSE! My work is now Windows, Mac and Ubuntu, but mostly Windows. AFAIK I'm the only one in the company on 10.04 so far (although with 60,000 plus employees, maybe not), but I've been polling with what I've got locally in and out of work. Folks are used to buttons on the right, and just don't want them to change right now, at least not without more changes. This changes the default on users that don't know how to even change it back or how easy it is to change back. Keep in mind I've got experience with stuff like this. 10 years ago I'd have been on your side of it and wondering why all the resistance to change. But after getting my head bashed about, I'm now a little more cautious on *how* to deploy UI improvements. I had a more "minor" UI change than this that ended up causing pitchforks and torches to get unleashed on me. You need to open your mind that what is minor to you and me can be a "catastrophic" defect for others. Is it really catastrophic? No, but in their mind it is, and that's what counts. UI changes aren't always about logic and reason. In fact that can make it worse on occasion... People get warm and fuzzy "familiar" feeling for their desktops. That emotion is what clouds this. My wife (former secretary who is from the prime target market for UI discussions like this because they are so irritable on UI changes) just explained to me that the irrationality is purely based on expectations. If the expectation is one thing, and the actual result is another, that's where the anger and sometimes blind rage comes from. Modify an existing interface with no visible reason for a change? She gets mad, quickly. Totally change the whole thing (so long as the changes make sense and are of benefit), and she expects to have to learn something new, and her expectations are properly set. I ran the change by my wife with Gnome2, and she hated it. I got the standard "DON'T MOVE MY BUTTONS!" response... Ran it by her with Gnome3, and she liked actually it, but Gnome3 is a paradigm shift on the desktop UI that largely obsoletes minimize and maximize. Gnome 2 is just a BAD choice for this. It's now a teetering old UI that needs replaced, not mildly and inexplicably modified...As I said before, it's like a fresh coat of paint on a house scheduled for demolition the following week. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
IOGraphica Plot from 9.10 with Gnome3. :) Different evening, standard normal usage, interruptions, surfing, email, document review, etc... Since Pako (I think it was Pako) brought up a good point for "what about Gnome 3?", I thought "what about Gnome 3?". :) So I tried it as well to get a better data point for Mark on the upcoming major change in Gnome that essentially *obsoletes* this discussion and bug... With Gnome 3 my usage changed quite a bit. The minimize, max and close buttons weren't used very often. The only button of those 3 even relevant after Gnome 3 releases will be the CLOSE button, and I'm not sure about that close button either depending on what else occurs before Gnome 3's actual release...This data seems to go along with my assertion that whatever is being planned, needs to occur on Gnome3 where there is a MAJOR paradigm shift for the desktop UI, rather than tacking something onto an existing/tired UI everyone is already comfortable with. For those that haven't tried Gnome3 yet, I highly recommend it just for the experience and heads up if nothing else. It's very intuitive for the changes, and while it's not perfect yet, it's in better shape than KDE4 was on the first couple of releases. The close button moving to the left wouldn't have irked me at all either on Gnome 3, since the upper left of the screen is where I was spending a lot of time anyway switching windows. In fact the close button on the upper right in Gnome 3 irked me. But that's Gnome 3, and this change is going into the old/obsolete Gnome2 where upper right is still "correct". I found quick instructions here: http://digitizor.com/2009/11/10/get-a-first-hand-feel-of-gnome-3-shell-in-ubuntu-karmic-koala/ So Mark, whatever feature you are planning, I think you would be well advised to tie it instead to Gnome 3 where this button fiasco doesn't really exist, and keep the pitchfork wielding bloggers off of you. Is it too late to make Gnome3 the default for Lucid? ;) ** Attachment added: "9.10 - Gnome3: 1.9 Hours of reasonably normal usage"" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42977399/IOGraphica%20-%201.4%20hours%20%28from%2021-00%20to%2022-29%29_Gnome3.png -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
As near as I can tell, I'm probably one of the few (or maybe only one) on the thread who has commercially/professionally dealt with the consequences of a development group's "rash" UI decisions in a product they support, and the types of users that come after you with pitchforks and torches afterwards. Let me tell you, it isn't fun. None of those types of users (the pitchfork/torch wielding ones) are on this thread, not will they likely see this thread. They won't be going to Google to see why it's broke, but they are going to give their IT guy an angry trouncing and be done with it. It leaves the IT guy in a bad position, and Ubuntu in a worse one ultimately. A "minor" change that hardly affected me at all, it's had a 100% negative (sometimes violent) reaction from 20 users I've polled. Although they softened up when I said, "what if there was something useful replacing it?". But if nothing replaces it where is the user's carrot/incentive? At that point there is only anger... Very frustrating for me since it makes me look bad after having pushed Ubuntu so hard for the last couple of years. I've been pushing hard on Windows users (who don't want Office 2007 and shifted to OoO) to go ahead and switch, since most of their normal apps already are dual platform. For UI related changes, it generally takes 6 months to a year of study, focus groups, marketing researchers doing blind studies on users, etc etc. Not cheap. So far I've only seen maybe 3 weeks here of debate, and still no tangible reason to switch. We're still missing the carrot. Unfortunately there are none of us on the thread who are "qualified" to give research data back. Why? Basically we're all over-qualified for this. All of us will skew the results one way or another, not intentionally but since we know what it's about and for, we will change the results. Better to get "blind" test subjects who have no clue what's going on, or why they're getting tested, or what the testing is even about. It's going to take a marketing research firm, and multiple test groups across the globe to get some data back. Not cheap, but it needs done. Course, still need to figure out what data is being collected, and why. Which means the unknown "unobtanium" feature on the right portion of the screen needs completed to a beta level... -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
Pako, Pako, Pako... My friend, you misinterpret me. But trust me, I understand what you are saying. 10 years ago I'd be with you on this debate/argument because I didn't have experiences that I do now supporting UI related stuff. Change is good right? Well maybe not sometimes... So when I say this is too small a change, it's because the change is incomplete, and just isn't worth expending Mark's precious political capital over at least until the feature is COMPLETE. There's a time to fight, and a time to strategically withdraw. This is the latter. Later it can be unveiled again when we've got a carrot, but until then I NEED that carrot to explain this change to my users that I support. Incomplete UI changes just don't work, you either have to go whole hog so something has demonstrably happened (again the carrot), or do nothing at all. I'm not against the UI changing. Gnome 3 so far looks really cool, and I've been an early adopter/tester of KDE4 in Kubuntu (and everyone who did knows how painful that was), and filing several defects along the way doing my part to help get it to something reasonably stable today, and I like KDE 4 better than Gnome as a personal preference. I'll probably start testing Gnome3 when I get a chance. I like most of the advanced interface in the new KDE, and probably will like Gnome3 as well. I don't like this small "button change", but I don't hate it either. It's a "meh" for me *personally*. But don't get my professional and personal preferences confused. Because they are different by necessity, as are a lot of IT guys out there who have to support one thing for the common good, and prefer something else on their own desktops. The reason why my professional and personal opinion differs is below. I used to be IT, and now I'm in a Dev/Sustaining role for the last 10 years roughly. I've supported UI's now for close to 10 years and will give you a quick simplified example from my past that was on something quite similar. I've been on the front lines when a usability change was made on a product for one customer (with a proper defect for the change) that made reasonable sense and was logical, and we massively honked off 10 other major customers (or more). Their admin/secretaries use this tech stuff every day heavily (and have the ears of executives) and get quite cranky when things move since they run on auto-pilot on nearly everything from computers to phones. I mean absolutely enraged because two silly buttons moved and it interrupted their work processes. Many of my counterparts (including me) laughed at this controversy, because the buttons that moved were CLEARLY marked. I mean moving silly buttons around generated that much rage? Jeeesh. But after a second trip around and near death threats because people's "cheese got moved" I've learned to respect that average user, and secretaries in particular, regardless of my own sentiments. Much of the time you can swap out the ENTIRE OS, or their desktop phone and they'll get over it because it is something totally new and it's expected to relearn, (provided what goes in makes sense to them for how to navigate the product, and you still get grumbles). Move something small on an existing application or on the existing phone? Forget it, unless you get their buy in. They go ballistic. Keep them happy, the others in an organization fall in line normally, including their boss. :) If the boss's admin ain't happy, nobody's happy. This is where we are at with Ubuntu now. It's not longer the cool "hobbyist OS" at home, but it's actually moving into the more mature corporate space where we can't be quite as cavalier as before. That uptake has been accelerated largely thanks to the MS Vista debacle. Personally and professionally, I now have a bit of skin in how Ubuntu turns out. My wife was a secretary/admin for years, and has that type of mindset. She's brilliant for running UI related stuff by on nearly anything, particularly since she's part of one of the bigger target audiences regarding UI features. I keep telling her she needs to be a tester since she understands this UI preference stuff better than I, at least for what pisses people off. I had issues converting her to Ubuntu, but not too many overall. Some stuff was different, but overall it was close enough and logical enough that it didn't honk her off. (getting her to OpenOffice was a little interesting, until I showed her MS Office 2007, and no complaints since...). I did unveil this to her yesterday evening, without letting my preferences be known. It didn't go well... She was much angrier than anticipated. I truly didn't expect more than an eye roll really, because it's not that big a change right?Instead I got expletives, and "why the hell are they moving my buttons??!?!?!, can't they leave anything along!?!?!?" Generally whatever her reaction is, has been pretty dead on for the average secretary and admin who have exec

>Pako wrote: >450+ are not majority, 30.00+ are. >"How about that explanation about the reasons for the button order change" >Well, the time is running and there is still no particular reason and >argument, why should be the right buttons retained. I have yet to hear a compelling reason why to move the buttons to the left, other than "Mac does it", and "There is some cool (currently) vapourware coming out for 10.10". I'm dealing with a cranky 55 year old wife, 30 year old daughter, 80 year old father-in-law, and 80 year old father as it is for support. All of them go into "who moved my cheese" mode when flipping UI items around. Small UI changes that I don't even notice, and they go into some sort of fit on it. Then if it's for no discernible reason like this is, then I can't really explain it, other than there it is and I get grumbles back from them. If there is a cool feature that requires moving buttons around, then by all means bring it out, and maybe it'll be worth retraining for. At least then I've got a legitimate and visible example to explain this change in defaults. A carrot of enticement as it were. Although with both my father-in-law and father, I CAN'T allow their buttons to move regardless... They're easily confused and baffled by these "electronic typewriters" as they call them. Me personally, I CAN use it, but I find it just as counterproductive as the Mac interface so I switched it back. If I liked Mac, I'd have a Mac and I'd be the worlds biggest snob about it and frown on "free OS Mac wannabes", and not likely to move to Ubuntu even with an interface change. Ubuntu's big selling point is getting people off Windows almost without them noticing too much thanks to the current Gnome UI, Firefox, and OpenOffice's familiar interface coming from Office 2003. With that said I think what is being (almost mistakenly) applied to both sides of the argument though is logic. For UI issues like this, much of the time logic has no place. I've dealt with these before at work with around a million users affected. Move around something on the screen, and let the anger begin. If something is to be moved around, it has to be clearly understood beforehand, evaluated by a larger focus group and not done on what seems to be a whim, and "that looks cool". if people understand it, and the need to move things around, they go with it and accept it without getting so cranky as they are getting here. Personally I see plenty of room on the left side of the titlebar for features. Just right justify the text and VOILA! OK, I'm trying to apply logic to it as well... The emotional element of peoples attachments to UI appearances has to be taken into account, in spite of it largely being an intangible for datapoints. Mark - I'll address this bit directly to you, and understand I applaud everything thing you are doing here. You're on my most admired list. Understand I'm not against changing the UI. Some major UI changes are called for as this isn't the 1980's anymore and we're still not that far away from Xerox's original interface.Big UI changes are called for. Paradigm shifts even. Small changes where buttons are just moved without a good, easily understood, tangible reason (ala the feature carrot)? It just ticks people off and makes everyone a little irrational... Once that irrationality starts, it picks up steam as is demonstrated in this thread... good luck stopping it. My reasons for not changing this little bit of UI?: 1) Standards: Most UI's are Min, Max, Close on the right. Unveiling this *single* change right now doesn't seem like a good idea without something to back it up. 2) Ease of Use/productivity: Most of us I think are bouncing between Windows, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Redhat, SuSE and others. When using VM's as well on the box - Windows (or other OS) in that VM window starts getting confusing when rapidly bouncing between them. Moving back and forth now takes some effort that it didn't take before, even with no mistakes. 3) Judging from comments, the folks that like the buttons on the left seem to be power users who'll change them on their own, and the ones who like them on the right range from computer illiterate to power users. (possible generalisation on my part there, but Ubuntu's raison d'etre I thought was to be ultimately usable for all) 4) The new feature that the button move belongs to isn't cooked or released yet. Wait for new feature to integrate and test usability with said feature before rolling out theoretical interface advantage tied to that feature. It might not work as expected, causing all this churn for nothing. Actually I've noticed no feature ever goes as anticipated in the early design prototype stages. Patience isn't a bad thing here. 5) Gnome 3 seems to be casting a shadow over where/if those buttons will be anyway. WAIT for Gnome to finish their 3.0 UI improvements and tack on there where there is a longe
[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
GUI changes AFTER a product has released are always controversial. You'll get less complaints by building a whole new Window Manager than by changing a small usability item. Whatever gets released is pretty much what you're stuck with, unless you can keep making minor usability changes/tweak over a span of years so as not to rock the boat too much. (I've had experience with other UI projects at work, and a couple of buttons getting moved around sometimes result in nothing short of death threats People get REAL cranky about the interface of things after they've started using it.) Most of us are used to the current window layout, and much of us have used it since the 80's. That's been a really big selling point of Ubuntu and OpenOffice is the lack of retraining for end users. Folks who were used to WindowsXP and Office 2003 could come over to Ubuntu and be productive nearly immediately. I tell folks that all the time, and they generally find it to be true, particularly the ones who were avoiding Vista and didn't want a Mac. The buttons on the right make sense. I know there is supposed to be something to take advantage of that space, but why can't it use all that "dead" space on the left instead? I think to my wife and daughter, and both sets of our parents They all go NUTS when there is any UI changes at all and get lost very quickly when someone "moves their cheese" as it were.I admit the button placement disoriented me for a while, but like a trooper I went on for a week and until I could make a informed choice. One issue for me is that I go back and forth between MANY systems of varying OS's. They all have the buttons on the right, with the oddball exceptions of Lucid and Mac. As a result that does hit the productivity a bit, and I found I actually prefer the buttons where they are. Sometimes on a change like that I would find that it was more convenient But not this time. Change for change sake isn't good, ask MS about Vista... However, this mini-debacle has raised a good point about the UI config, and I DO think it would be cool if users had an EASY way to make decisions for themselves on this. I mean that's one of the brilliant parts of Linux and OpenSource projects is the diversity of ideas. Let the Mac guys (and others who like it) have change to buttons on the left, while the rest of us keep our buttons on the right by default. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down
Further report confirming that as of Jaunty Alpha 3 (upgraded from Alpha 2 directly rather than from the liveCD) things are good for this bug on my HP/Compaq F763NR laptop (with MCP67 rev a2 chipset). Currently running Alpha4 and it's still good, and the Alpha4 CD boots OK. I'm now at kernel 2.6.28-7, although as I write this, it's updating to 2.6.28-8... AND 2.6.28-8 just booted ok as well. I'm pretty close to upgrading my primary work partition from Intrepid to Jaunty primarily to get rid of this annoyance. If nothing else, it's a real headache when explaining to doubtful buddies how Ubuntu Linux is absolutely ready for General Purpose office usage, and then I had to hold a key down during boot... Generates serious eyerolls from them and some embarrassment for me... Perception is everything unfortunately, even if this is minor bug it generates an immediate negative impression for newbs before the desktop has even come up, and that colours the whole "out of box experience". I'm so glad to see it fixed for my hardware combination! I've had good luck with kernels: 2.6.28-6 2.6.28-7 2.6.28-8 -- System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272247 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down
I confirmed that Ubuntu Jaunty Beta 3 (both LiveCD and after being installed) boots fine on the HP/Compaq F763NR laptop. [Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down
** Description changed: Once the Ubuntu splash screen loads with the progress bar that moves back and forth, it freezes. Holding down any key unfreezes the system, and it continues loading normally, until I release the key, at which point it freezes again. Holding a key down again unfreezes the system again. Pressing Alt+F1 to show the output also freezes, so I know it isn't just the splash screen freezing, but the entire system. Once X loads, it works perfectly fine though, and I don't have to keep holding a key down. Update : This bug happens with 2.6.26 and 2.6.27 kernels with a computer that has Nvidia MCP67 motherboard. A known workaround that sometimes works is to add nolapic to GRUB boot kernel options. acpi=noirq is also known to work.
