Upgraded to Ubuntu 21.10 yesterday and noticed today that the issue with the overly large images is not happening anymore. Working ok with or without the above mentioned change to .config/liferea/liferea.css (BTW if I modify that change with 'max-width: 50%' the image width does shrink in half)
