[Bug 1382843] Re: corrupted double-linked list

2014-12-02 Thread Jim Nelson
As policy we don't release builds for same-version packages in Ubuntu's
repos to avoid name and version conflicts. (In other words, since
shotwell 0.20.2 is in the 14.10 repo, we don't release 0.20.2 for 14.10
in our PPA.) That decision is complicated with Ubuntu maintaining their
own fork w/ UOA for Shotwell, but it's just how it goes.

Another possibility would be to download the 0.20.2 tarball from GNOME,
build it, and run it directly from the build directory (that is, you
don't even need to install it). I know that's more painful but it would
give a way to test the issue.

[Bug 1379015] Re: Be more conservative about sidebar number badges

2014-10-09 Thread Jim Nelson
Just to get everyone on the same page: the number Geary is displaying is
returned by the IMAP server. It represents unread messages in that
folder only (not unread messages drawn into conversations in the
folder). Geary is not generating this number because Geary doesn't
necessarily have the entire mailstore downloaded to the local database.

Cassidy, I have seen the subjects of every message in my Inbox but Gmail
continues to show an unread count beside my Inbox folder. I'm not sure
what you're seeing different.

Regarding Sent Mail, doing things like marking a conversation unread and
then archiving it will mark a sent message as unread if it's in the
conversation.

It sounds like the suggestion here is to limit the places the unread
count is shown to Inbox, Drafts, and Spam, in addition to the user's
labels. That's entirely reasonable. I would also add the Outbox so the
user knows when a message is sending. I would still keep the sidebar
tooltip that displays the total and the unread counts for each folder

[Bug 1379017] Re: Draw message list separate with CSS

2014-10-08 Thread Jim Nelson
If that works, I would be very happy. Our original proposal was to
space out the cells, but GtkCellRender is severely limited in what it
can draw. If CSS gets us there (or we simply restyle with a better
border), I'm stoked.

[Bug 1379015] Re: Be more conservative about sidebar number badges

2014-10-08 Thread Jim Nelson
The unread message count is a kind of call to action, at least it is for
some people. Not every user has email flowing directly into their Inbox
which they then manually sort into folders. Plenty use server-side
filtering. These unread message counts indicate when new messages have
arrived (or there are things to do for people who use unread that
way).

Gmail shows unread counts in its sidebar, but it uses a text number
(i.e. Connections (6)) rather than a drawn badge. We did that early
on in Geary; it looked ugly.

[Bug 1335600] Re: Publishing to flickr broken since api.flickr went https-only

2014-08-27 Thread Jim Nelson
@Danny you're still using 0.18.0 which does not have the Flickr fix.
You'll need to upgrade to 0.18.1 for it. I don't know if Ubuntu plans
on backporting the fix to Trusty but a version for 14.04 is available at
Yorba's PPA, https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

I suspect your issue with accounts has something to do with Ubuntu
Online Accounts, not Shotwell. Note that the version on our PPA does
not use UOA.

[Bug 1352846] Re: Geary fails to send emails

2014-08-05 Thread Jim Nelson
Does it happen for all emails you try and send, or just one?

In System Settings - Network - Network Proxy, what Method are you
using?

A log would help:

$ geary --debug --log-network  geary.log

Try sending an email, let the error message be displayed, then exit
Geary. Send the geary.log file to ge...@yorba.org.

[Bug 1347321] [NEW] Blurred fonts in GtkPopover under Unity

2014-07-22 Thread Jim Nelson
Public bug reported:

I'm currently developing an application which uses GtkPopovers. It
works fine under GNOME Shell on Utopic 14.10 but under Unity text inside
the popover is blurry. I will attach screenshots indicating what I'm
talking about.

Oddly, the text inside a GtkButton displays fine. It's the text labels
elsewhere (GtkLabels, combo boxes, etc.) that are blurred.

[Bug 1314904] Re: Remote publishing does not work in GNOME/XFCE on trusty

2014-05-20 Thread Jim Nelson
So, first: If the users install ubuntu-online-account, does that fix the
problem for them? If so, we should communicate that to them.

As far as easy solutions, if adding back the dependency is off the
table, then my only other suggestion is to distribute an unmodified
version of Shotwell (or, at least, w/o the UOA plugins and w/
Shotwell's). I suspect that's also off the table, in which case I don't
have any suggestion other than more code changes, i.e. a warning dialog.

If you run Shotwell from the terminal window like this:

$ SHOTWELL_LOG=1 SHOTWELL_LOG_FILE=:console: shotwell

and reproduce this problem, do you see errors listed, in particular:

21:38 z4nD4R (shotwell:12245): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **:
g_app_info_get_commandline: assertion 'G_IS_APP_INFO (appinfo)' failed
21:38 z4nD4R (shotwell:12245): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_spawn_command_line_async:

[Bug 689055] Re: Shotwell doesn't respect system locale time format

2014-05-13 Thread Jim Nelson
Shotwell now uses system locale time formats, but unfortunately some of
the translation strings haven't been updated to match the speaker's
locale. I'm hoping that in a future release this will be improved.

[Bug 1318847] Re: shotwell shows incorrect time

2014-05-13 Thread Jim Nelson
This is an outstanding bug. For some reason the LP ticket was marked as
fixed (bug #1035067) although it was never fixed; Shotwell began using
locale-specific strings (which some translators haven't added,
unfortunately) but the 24-hour problem is a separate issue and not fixed
in Shotwell. See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=716533

As it turns out, this problem (at least, one with the same sympthoms)
was discovered en masse with gexiv2 on Trusty. I've just applied a
patch that fixes the problem.

I'm marking this as a duplicate of that ticket on the assumption that
the problems are one and the same. gexiv2 0.10.1 will have the patch
that fixes this problem. If people still have this error using 0.10.1,
please comment here and we can re-open.

[Bug 1308296] Re: Allow for other calendar applications to register with Unity calendar indicator

2014-04-17 Thread Jim Nelson
GNOME does allow defining a default calendar (System Settings - Details
- Default Applications), so that could be used by indicator-datetime as
well. But as Charles pointed out, since indicator-datetime is
displaying calendar events, it should probably be keyed to a calendar
application that can display those same events as well. If indicator-
datetime is opened up to any calendar app, like Lightning, then I
would think the user experience demands that indicator-datetime have an
internal interface into the application's known events, i.e.
liblightning, if such a thing existed. I suppose a D-Bus interface
could be spec'd out, sort of like Messaging Menu, but I'd be happy with
just using the .desktop file as a first step. (To be clear, I'm not
wedded to my proposed key names, I was just being verbose for clarity's
sake.)

[Bug 1308296] Re: Allow for other calendar applications to register with Unity calendar indicator

2014-04-16 Thread Jim Nelson
I agree, these are all important considerations. Perhaps the calendar
application can register itself as indicator-datetime compatible with
an X- entry in its .desktop file, indicating that it meets the above
criteria? Something like this:

X-Unity-Indicator-Datetime-Date: calendar --date %D
X-Unity-Indicator-Datetime-Event: calendar --uid %U

Verbose, and I'm sure more concise key names could be devised, but
hopefully this would satisfy the requirements. This still requires the
app writer to understand that they have to use EDS as their back-end.
(We have a similar issue with GNOME Shell's calendar, by the way.)

Yes, Yorba is looking at calendar integration. We've begun a new
project toward that end: http://blogs.gnome.org/jnelson/2014/03/21
/introducing-california-a-new-gnome-3-calendar/ It uses EDS, so we're
good on that point, but we'd need to add command-line support for
opening to a date or an event (which we certainly would make happen if
it would mean Unity integration).

[Bug 1308296] [NEW] Allow for other calendar applications to register with Unity calendar indicator

2014-04-15 Thread Jim Nelson
Public bug reported:

It appears that Unity's calendar indicator (in the global menu, right-
side of the screen) is hardwired to launch Evolution if an event is
selected. In System Settings, the only checkbox relevant to this is to
show Coming events from Evolution Calendar.

It'd be nice if instead the Unity calendar indicator would launch the
user's chosen default calendar application.

I'm not suggesting that the calendar indicator quit using Evolution Data
Server for calendar information, just which application is launched in
response to a user event.
