[Bug 1769288] Re: indicator-datetime displays the date unnaturally in Japanese

2018-05-05 Thread Joe Carey
So, it seems the root is that Japan uses ISO dating typically, even
handwritten, and the new default uses not ISO, and there's no GUI option
to set it as such. Not so much a bug as a design choice.

[Bug 1769288] Re: indicator-datetime displays the date unnaturally in Japanese

2018-05-05 Thread Joe Carey
Hey, from https://askubuntu.com/questions/237941/how-to-configure-the-
clock-date-format-to-iso-8601-in-unity

I was able to sort this manually:

There's no easy way to do it in the GUI. One can either use dconf-editor
(which is GUI-ish), and edit two keys in
/com/canonical/indicator/datetime (time-format to custom, and custom-
time-format to the desired strftime directives, in your case %F %R (or,
equivalently, %Y-%m-%d %H:%M)), or do it directly from the terminal with
the following two commands (which, just to be clear, change the same
keys):

dconf write /com/canonical/indicator/datetime/time-format "'custom'"
dconf write /com/canonical/indicator/datetime/custom-time-format "'%F %R

I replaced %Y-%m-%d %H:%M with %Y年%m月%d日 %H:%M

However, the default remains not sane :)

[Bug 1769288] [NEW] indicator-datetime displays the date unnaturally in Japanese

2018-05-04 Thread Joe Carey
Public bug reported:

The date should be (and has been in previous Ubuntu versions) displayed
as follows (for YMD):

2018年5月4日 (the symbols clearly mean year, month, day).

Instead, they're displayed weirdly as "5月 4 2018" This is not the way a
date would ever be written in Japanese. In gnome this happens on the
lock screen as well.

If you were writing a date without the year it would be:

5月4日

it doesn't make sense to leave off the 日.

[Bug 1302581] [NEW] libindicator and/or indicator-keyboard not showing correct graphic for text input

Public bug reported:

Until another bug was fixed, no icon was displayed at all for English
text input (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
keyboard/+bug/1293548). Thanks to the fix, functionally nothing is
wrong, but I think it's displaying a dull icon where the brighter
version is appropriate. The same icon shows for all themes I have
installed except Ubuntu-mono-dark, which shows up nice and bright. I
have screenshots. I happen to use Faenza-darkest.

2013-07-07 Thread Joe Carey
Lately, I have been having trouble booting at all. I found out that if
I unplug the laptop and then boot, usually (ha, not always) it will
boot. Then I have to promptly run a ripper to keep the machine going
(and now this doesn't always work).

I noticed that when it does not boot, the hard drive LED goes off and
stays off at and at that point, boot fails.

Just to see, while booting and not plugged in, I suddenly plugged it in
, hard drive LED goes off.

[Bug 1154006] Re: [dynabook TX/66E] 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-06-30 Thread Joe Carey
Thanks, I've updated the tags.

I really hope this is a bug that can be fixed but I now have a very
strong suspicion that this is a hardware issue. Hopefully I'll be
proven wrong :D

[Bug 1154006] Re: 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-06-10 Thread Joe Carey
Sooo... after months of wrestling with this, a problem I thought I
had ruled out is indeed the problem.

If I unplug my laptop and run it with just the battery, NO FREEZES. Of
course the battery will only last so long. But the moment I plug the
beast back in, it freezes. I swapped a/c adaptors, power bar and tried
a different wall outlet. The jack on the laptop itself doesn't seem to
be loose, so I can only conclude that it's something on the motherboard
and I think it'd be cheaper to scrap it than to have it fixed.

So, dude, I'm gettin' a Dell. about 150 bucks in Japan, new, for their
bottom-of-the-line model. Sigh.

For anyone else suffering random freezes, good luck. I'm going to
retire from this thread.

[Bug 1154006] Re: 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-06-01 Thread Joe Carey
** Description changed:

My laptop computer freezes very, very frequently. I'm using 12.04.02 32
bit. Fresh install of 12.04 64 bit and 12.10 32 bit also freeze. I've
used kernels 3.2, 3.5, 3.8 and 3.9, as well as 2.6 and 3.0, for good
- measure. All still have this random freeze. If anyone has any idea, I
- will cheerfully supply whatever info you need. It's been close to two
- months I think. :P
+ measure. Linux Mint also freezes. Fedora also freezes. All have this
+ random freeze. If anyone has any idea, I will cheerfully supply whatever
+ info you need. It's been months now.
+
+ I swear that I did not have this problem when I first got this computer
+ (second hand in August 2012) but seems to have come up after. But I
+ have no idea what update has caused the trouble as I have tried several
+ different kernels.
+
+ Steps to reproduce: Boot up computer, wait a few minutes.
+
+ Steps to resolve: Hold down the power button.
+
+ What happens next: Boot up the computer, wait a few minutes. Then it
+ happens again.
+
+
+ Oddly, it DOES NOT FREEZE if I am doing something processor intensive, like
ripping a DVD or converting video. So whenever I boot up my computer, I have
to immediately start ripping. A bit of a pain.

When it freezes, the keys do not respond at all, opening another tty or
- using REISUB completely impossible.
+ using REISUB completely unpossible.

- It can happen anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours after a boot.
- Usually while browsing, but that's because I'm usually browsing I think.
+ It usually happens within ten minutes, it seems to have gotten worse.

The only thing I can do is a hard reset.

I have tried to ssh into my computer from my wife's, but it is
impossible while frozen (note, it IS possible when my computer is not
frozen, so from what I have read, this indicates my error is not a GPU
hang, correct me if I am wrong :) )

- Memtest shows no errors.
+ Memtest shows no errors after running it all night.
+
+ Hard disk is still fine, though I'm sure my frequent hard reset will
+ shorten its lifespan.

Happens in unity 2d and unity 3d, guessing it's not compiz.

Also, if I don't log in to x and just go straight to console, I still
  get freezes.

  No proprietary drivers either.

My computer is kept dust free, it is not overheating.

- Significant or not I have no idea, but my desktop icons appear in a
- different position after rebooting.
-
As per another report, I tried noapic and nomodeset, to no avail.
acpi=off too. :P acpi_apic_instance=2 did not work better either.

- I discovered that hitting the function button will toggle the light off
- and on after the freeze, at least for a short time.
+ Hitting the function button will toggle the light off and on after the
+ freeze, but only in the first few seconds.
+
+ I'm not that experienced with linux, but I have suffered with this bug
+ for months now. Anything from the logs that looks like it might be the
+ source of the problem I have googled, tried various solutions that
+ helped other people with similar problems but mine persists.

Thanks gang. I am a new Ubuntu user and I love it, despite this
  grievous problem.

have something else. See if your symptoms or situation match this bug:

Usually freezes within ten minutes of finishing. Help! I'm sure
ripping DVDs is illegal in Japan, not to mention running the DVD drive

2013-04-15 Thread Joe Carey
Ok experts who love solving puzzles. When I go to work, I leave ushare
up and running so my wife can stream videos for my son (he's 2).
Lately, of course, it's been freezing and so we can't. As an
experiment, since by odd chance it seemed to work, I've been setting
Thoggen DVD ripper to rip a dvd (the same one over and over) while I'm
gone. My wife has confirmed that shortly after the DVD finishes ripping
my computer freezes. But never DURING the rip. What the heck does that
mean for this bug and my computer???

2013-04-14 Thread Joe Carey
For further insanity, after freezing 8 times or so this morning, I
attempted to rip a DVD. Didn't freeze the whole time. About ten
minutes after it was done, froze. So today, when I have wanted to use
my computer for any length of time, I've been ripping the same DVD over
and over again. Coincidence? I have no idea, but so far so good.
Whatever gets me through the day.

It probably happens while tying in the URL bar because you frequently
type in the URL bar. Not the cause of the problem, just coincidence.

I installed Fedora yesterday and got a freeze within minutes with it
too.

As a last resort, I might have to install XP.

I'm glad to see bug heat is rising on this, maybe it will get some
attention and be fixed.

Either that or I have bad hardware and nothing can be done at all :(

[Bug 1154006] Re: 12.04 freezes many times daily

This maybe?

If so, the problem has been around for a long time.

[Bug 1154006] Re: 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-04-11 Thread Joe Carey
This freeze cost me 3 blank dvds today and who knows how much it will shorten
the life of my hard drive. :(
I tried 13.04 today, still freezes. If it is hardware failure, which piece of
hardware is it? Still at wit's end.

2013-04-07 Thread Joe Carey
Scott, if you get a freeze but are still able to move your mouse,
consider filing another bug report, unless the above has finally solved
your problem. When I get a freeze, everything is frozen, no mouse, no
keyboard and nothing writes to the hard drive either it seems.

[Bug 1154006] Re: 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-04-06 Thread Joe Carey
Ok... a bit of weirdness which I do not have the expertise to interpret.
I forgot and left a game running in the background all day and no freeze
since I started it. Before that, this morning, I had had four freezes
in a half hour. Since my bug has a heat of only 20 and no one is
assigned, I'll try doing this daily :P Ha ha.

[Bug 1154006] Re: 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-03-29 Thread Joe Carey
It seem to me that my issue has only been for a few months too. I
switched to Ubuntu (on my old pc) and then bought this computer last
summer and went on bragging about how flawlessly Ubuntu is and that all
my friends should switch (ha ha). It's only been since January or so
that I've had this problem.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-25 Thread Joe Carey
What we really need is to stop adding to this bug report. If you still
have a bug, it is a different bug from this bug. If you are still
experiencing freezes, file a bug report apart from this one, and include
the files they ask for (I was new and didn't do this at first but there
is a helpful reminder generated by a bot on how to use apport to collect
this info and update your bug report very easily via the command line).

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-15 Thread Joe Carey
Judging from the thread, it's marked as won't fix because it is not a
single bug we're all complaining about, but a complex interaction of
several bugs. Many people are complaining about completely different
symptoms, all with a freeze, but even the character of the freeze is
different from case to case. I have marked this bug as not affecting me
and filed a bug report detailing my exact symptoms. Might be time for
others to do the same.

frozen, so from what I have read, this indicates my error is not a GPU
hang, correct me if I am wrong :) )

Memtest shows no errors (memtest would not run, except for from a live
usb, but I got it covered. No errors).

Happens in unity 2d and unity 3d, guessing it's not compiz.
+
+ Also, if I don't log in to x and just go straight to console, I still
+ get freezes. I can't win.

  No proprietary drivers either.

My computer is kept dust free, it is not overheating.

As per another report, I tried noapic and nomodeset, to no avail.
acpi=off too. :P acpi_apic_instance=2 did not work better either.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-13 Thread Joe Carey
A google search for ubuntu 12.04 freezes frequently produces About
792,000 results (0.16 seconds) .

I opened a bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1154006.

If you have the exact same symptoms as I do, and have also attempted to
debug it as I have, consider adding yourself to that bug report.

If however, you are able to do anything with the keyboard or mouse, or
if the screen continues to update, then it is clearly not the same
issue, so please in that case do not add yourself.

I'm sure some of the 440 odd people who are on this thread have bad
hardware, but is it really possible that we all do?

[Bug 1154006] [NEW] 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-03-12 Thread Joe Carey
Public bug reported:

My computer freezes very, very frequently. I'm using 12.04.02 (32bit,
though my computer supports 64 bit, but I had freezes with that too),
I've had the same trouble on 12.04.01 and 12.10. I've used kernels 3.2,
3.5 and 3.8, all still have freezing. I'm not sure how to identify the
package causing the freezing, but not for a lack of trying. If anyone
has any idea, I will cheerfully supply whatever info you need. It's
been close to two months I think. :P

When it freezes, the keys do not respond at all, making another tty or
using REISUB completely impossible.

It can happen anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours after a boot.
Usually while browsing, but that's because I'm usually browsing I think.

The only thing I can do is a hard reset.

I have tried to ssh into my computer from my wife's, but it is
impossible while frozen (note, it IS possible when my computer is not
frozen, so from what I have read, this indicates my error is not a GPU
hang, correct me if I am wrong :) )

Memtest shows no errors (memtest would not run, except for from a live
usb, but I got it covered. No errors).

Happens in unity 2d and unity 3d, guessing it's not compiz.

No proprietary drivers either.

My computer is kept dust free, it is not overheating.

As per another report, I tried noapic and nomodeset, to no avail.
acpi=off too. :P acpi_apic_instance=2 did not work better either.

[Bug 1154006] Re: 12.04 freezes many times daily

2013-03-12 Thread Joe Carey
I chose, hopefully not mistakenly, the kernel as the problem package,
please forgive me if I'm overstepping. The methods suggested to debug
potential kernel problems is not possible for me, can't ssh in, and
keys/mouse do not respond.

** Package changed: ubuntu = linux (Ubuntu)

apport information

** Attachment added: WifiSyslog.txt

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1154006/+attachment/3570224/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

** Description changed:

My computer freezes very, very frequently. I'm using 12.04.02 (32bit,
though my computer supports 64 bit, but I had freezes with that too),
I've had the same trouble on 12.04.01 and 12.10. I've used kernels 3.2,
3.5 and 3.8, all still have freezing. I'm not sure how to identify the
package causing the freezing, but not for a lack of trying. If anyone
has any idea, I will cheerfully supply whatever info you need. It's
been close to two months I think. :P

When it freezes, the keys do not respond at all, making another tty or
  using REISUB completely impossible.

No luck here with 3.8.2.
noting in kernel.log sticks out, nor in dmesg, nor syslog. Yet it freezes.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-20 Thread Joe Carey
Re #713

I tried your fix too, but with no luck. Crashed again several times
today.

This time I could make note of the time and find the log entries.

Feb 20 23:39:57 joescomputer dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.24.54 on eth0 to
192.168.24.1 port 67
Feb 20 23:39:57 joescomputer dhclient: DHCPACK of 192.168.24.54 from
192.168.24.1
Feb 20 23:39:57 joescomputer dhclient: bound to 192.168.24.54 -- renewal in
1485 seconds.

Then it crashed. I'm new at linux but able to follow instructions... what
other information would be helpful?
I've been researching this bug for weeks to no avail.

I've only been using ubuntu since 12.04, and this is the second laptop
I've been running it on, but the problem was not there when I first
started using it. Just in the last, I dunno, 6 weeks. Halp!
