[Bug 937091] Re: New Zoidberg version

2012-06-19 Thread Joel Berger
Oooh, this irks me so much. It was non-responsive (wouldn't build) for
years, then I released 0.981 in January, and they remove it in March.
Honestly I'm not sure I care, I am generally of the opinion that Perl
modules should be installed via CPAN if possible anyway. Still they
couldn't have tried very hard to contact me or Jaap (original author),
we have been available all this time.

[Bug 937091] [NEW] New Zoidberg version

2012-02-20 Thread Joel Berger
Public bug reported:

Is someone available to upload a newer version of Zoidberg? I am the new
maintainer and a bugfix release is out. (now 0.981) Releases can be seen
on CPAN (http://search.cpan.org/perldoc?Zoidberg) and development is on
my Github at https://github.com/jberger/Zoidberg

[Bug 773533] Re: Mouse Dead Spots

2011-04-29 Thread Joel Berger
An easy way to see the effect is to open gedit (or some graphical text
editor) and move the mouse over the empty document. Most of the area
will show the cursor as a the crossed capital letter I (i.e. a T also
crossed underneath), except in these dead spots the cursor reverts to
the mouse pointer. As mentioned in the OP nothing useful can be done
with mouse interaction while the mouse is in this area.

One exception to the rule that this dead spot applies to all
applications is Tilda, a drop down console (quake-like), which I can
easily imagine has different drawing and capture rules.

Stock Ubuntu 11.04 install on a Dell mini 10.

Additional information will be happily provided upon request.

Re: [Bug 621927] Re: Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM variable

2010-11-13 Thread Joel Berger
gnome-terminal sets TERM for you. And Guake never set it, libvte did,
which is what changed. I made some instructions on how to work around
this before it was fixed in GDM. Assuming you use Ubuntu (or other
flavor which has profile.d) follow them:
http://joelslinux.blogspot.com/2010/10/ubuntu-maverick-term-variable.html
Othewise change it so that you add the line directly to /etc/profile.

That should fix it.

[Bug 635804] Re: Tilda: TERM environment variable needs set

2010-09-17 Thread Joel Berger
On Ubuntu I think the easiest way to fix this problem, both workaround
and packaged as a solution, is to make a simple script in
/etc/profile.d/ . I called mine set_term.sh (must end in .sh). The file
need only have in it

export TERM=xterm

and then either run source /etc/profile or reboot. This will set the
$TERM variable for all users on each boot without hardcoding the
variable as some of the other programs I listed above have done. In one
command, for those who need it run:

echo export TERM=xterm | sudo tee /etc/profile.d/set_term.sh source
/etc/profile

Hope that helps.

[Bug 242438] Re: compiz update 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu7 doesn't include compiz-kde update

2009-04-08 Thread Joel Berger
Well, I haven't used hardy in some months (current desktop runs
intrepid-amd64), but I whipped up a hardy-i386 chroot install to test,
and among the other output from 'apt-get -s install compiz-kde' I got
this:

Inst compiz-kde (1:0.7.4-0ubuntu7 Ubuntu:8.04/hardy-updates)

The version matches what was missing in the original bug, and it does
show the same one-version-only dependency on compiz-core and compiz-
plugins as in the prior version. That suggests to me that it's been
fixed, as it was probably just an incomplete upload to begin with.
Thanks.

[Bug 205990] Re: [hardy] splash screen disappears after a few seconds

2009-02-23 Thread Joel Berger
I am having this issue as well. I prefer a swapfile, but I lose my
usplash to get it.

From watching the boot process I tend to agree with Ezra that the disk
is not yet mounted thus the swap cannot be found yet. However the swap
does get mounted eventually because I can 'cat /proc/meminfo' and see
the swap available.

My questions are, would there be any reason not to remove the swapfile
from /etc/fstab and instead swapon /mnt/swap from rc.local? I know its
clumsy but it might work.

Also does it matter that I call /mnt/swap from /etc/fstab rather than
the UUID that gets printed during the creation as per
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq#Example%20of%20making%20a%20swap%20file

Thanks

[Bug 242438] [NEW] compiz update 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu7 doesn't include compiz-kde update

2008-06-23 Thread Joel Berger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Using 8.04, compiz-core from hardy-updates repository.
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted

The last update to compiz bumps the version to 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu7. This
causes apt-get to remove compiz-kde as there is no corresponding update
for this package and it depends on an exact version of compiz-core
/compiz-plugins. (Latest version of compiz-kde after apt-get update is
1:0.7.4-ubuntu6, which depends on an identical version number for
compiz-core/compiz-plugins.) Compiz still operates, but the KDE look
and feel (and config integration) is gone.

[Bug 236840] Re: flashplugin-nonfree tries to install kde too

Thats the funny thing about it. Those packages are not yet installed. I

The only thing I am not sure of is if it is the package that has the

perhaps a bad configurations file).

Is there anything else I can try, or info I can provide?

Hi Basilio,
I am currently experiencing this exact bug on my Gutsy install. I have to
manually re-enter my DNS entries upon each restart. I have not yet tried adding

Linux more user friendly - and thus GUI based, I think that this is something

[Bug 84139] Re: Arduino detected as braille device

This also impacts the DATAQ DI-148U USB data acquisition board. These
only identify as 0403:6001 if you change the jumper settings (not
recommended for Windows use, but required for Linux use since the module
doesn't recognize the default 0683:1480). I guess a better question is
this: since FTDI serial chips are used for so many devices, is there a
better way to identify them than by USB vendor/device ID?

$SANE_DEVICE into something more graceful. I've just never had much
luck with backreferences in sed. Oh, and don't forget that the script
is still just a workaround and I think it'll be better for us all in the
long run to deal with this upstream (e.g. most likely the SANE
developers) in the interest of a real fix.

@ Arthus42:

The only cases in which I could reproduce that error were for cases
where the file as specified didn't exist (remember that sh file
doesn't honor $PATH) or the user trying to run the script didn't have
read permission to the file. So that's where I'd troubleshoot first.

[Bug 85488] Re: Canon Lide25 (plustek backend) scanner does not scan via gui

2007-04-15 Thread Joel Berger
I've got an N1240U/LiDE30 with the same problem as Clay above: the
workaround script works for one scan, but gets the black output
afterward.

For those who are able to get more than one scan, I took a page from
ianrose and wrote a wrapper script that will continue to poke the
scanner port as long as xsane (or the tool of your choice) is alive:

#!/bin/bash
# plustek-wrapper: finds a plustek USB device and keeps it alive while the
# wrapped program is running.
# Joel Berger hikari (at) yumemiru (dot) org 2007-04-15

# Requires:
# sane-utils (scanimage)
# sed
# gawk

# Detect device and store as $SANE_DEVICE
SANE_DEVICE=$(  scanimage -L | \
grep plustek | \
sed 's/^.*plustek/plustek/' | \
sed s/' is a.*// | \
awk -F : '{print /dev/bus/usb/ $3 / $4}'
 )

if [ $SANE_DEVICE ] ; then
  $*
  CHILD_PID=$!
  while ps -p $CHILD_PID /dev/null; do
cat $SANE_DEVICE /dev/null
sleep 1
  done
else
  # If no plustek device is detected, bail out and run the program normally.
  exec $*
fi
