I had the same issue with upgrading from 16.04 to 16.10. and I too had to dismiss MANY identical dialogues about this failure!! I almost power cycled... but kept going.. waiting for upgrade to complete PLEASE fix - or at least don't have an endless cycle of error messages -- You
