[Bug 1574951] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Screen, mousepad and keyboard freezing

2018-04-09 Thread john brown
re:freezing screen with Ubuntu 16.04

This only started recently with me, after watching in the monitor I
noticed the process Web Content was taking almost all the CPU time and a
lot of memory until I ran out of my 6 GB.

I solved it by using these following procedures, after removing a Cookie editor
extension:

#1 Under Firefox pref: Accept 3rd party cookies only from visited
websites!

#2 change this in GRUB

https://askubuntu.com/questions/761706/ubuntu-15-10-and-16-04-keep-
freezing-randomly

There is a line in that: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" (like
this), replace with: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
intel_idle.max_cstate=1"

#3 My SWAP was not being used at all! I doubled my swap space to that of my
memory (12 GB)

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-add-swap-space-
on-ubuntu-16-04

Would still freeze or run very slow, finally solved with this:

#4 I installed noscript from Firefox/Tools/extensions and only allow a
select few site to run scripts.

I installed according to a bug fix posted elsewhere to get my WiFi going
on my Toshiba Satellite to work, which it does now. It never worked
before the patch with 16.04 LTS.

2011-04-29 Thread John Brown
Public bug reported:

After a new install using LVM to squeeze Ubuntu 10.04.02 onto an Asus
Surf 2G with an 8GB SD card, Ubuntu Software Center refused to install
KeePassX, saying it required 'untrusted' items. i used apt-get to
install it instead. During that process, it was recommended to remove
the previous kernel with 'apt-get autoremove'. When I attempted to do
this, the bug - if such it is - occurred, refusing to remove the
headers.

Re: [Bug 713204] Re: package backuppc 3.1.0-9ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-10 Thread John Brown
Andreas

FYI - after mucking about for days in an effort to get the backuppc user
with the right permissions and a known password (using htpasswd), I
eventually did a *complete* removal of the backuppc package in Synaptic;
then deleted the backuppc user; then reinstalled.

This time it went in just fine, giving the dialogue box about the creation
of the backuppc user and password. So, although I do not recall having
previously put a copy of backuppc on my machine and then deleting it without
having ever used it, it looks as though that *is* the likely source of the
problem. The only difference between this reinstall and the previous one was
that this time I deleted the backuppc user (as hinted at in your email). So,
problem solved.

Thanks, John

FYI - after mucking about for days in an effort to get the backuppc user
with the right permissions and a known password (using htpasswd), I
eventually did a *complete* removal of the backuppc package in Synaptic;
then deleted the backuppc user; then reinstalled.

This time it went in just fine, giving the dialogue box about the creation

No, I haven't had BackupPC successfully installed before and indeed no User
has been set up. You will recall, though, that I have removed and
reinstalled from Ubuntu Software Centre to see if changing the permissions
on the directories would now allow thte links to be made and the install to
go in cleanly. Well, I got as far as the invitation to log in as user
backuppc, but had no password and couldn't enter the web interface.

After reading the config files and tinkering for a bit I came across
instructions for how to change the password using htpasswd, but this hasn't
completely solved the issue because although I now have a known password
associated with the backuppc user, there is in fact no backuppc user to
associate the password with! I guess it's the case that the install script
had only got so far when it fell over. When I then removed and reinstalled
from Ubuntu Software Centre things were probably in an ambiguous state. Of
course, you may detect something different. Would it help if I sent you any
further config or log files? If so, do say.
--

Just to get a better handle on how a normal install ought to have gone, I
moved to the small Debian Lenny partition on my hard drive (host name
keizan) and installed BackupPC there using the command:

keizan:/# aptitude install backuppc rsync libfile-rsync-perl
libfile-rsyncp-perl par2 bzip2

as suggested on DebianHelp. [I did it there so as not to disturb the set up
on my main Ubuntu partition for diagnostic purposes]. You can tell from the
attached record of the terminal session that everything went in OK and I am
able to log in because the backuppc user was set up as expected.

From my own point of view, as I only wanted to explore the software, this is
enough for me. Equally, I could maybe strip out my Ubuntu BackupPC install
and use apt-get there to achieve the same result. But I'm aware that having
got yout teeth into this apparent bug you may well feel the need to resolve
it. In which case, I am at your disposal to the limits of my capabilities. I
have 'played' with Linux since Red Hat 5.1 and am comfortable enough with
the command line. However, I am no expert on enterprise system adminstration
so I will benefit from fairly explicit guidance/instructions.

Again, thanks for pursuing this. Let me know how you want to play it.

2011-02-05 Thread John Brown

Many thanks for pointing me back to the detail of the error report
itself.

I've run the checks it suggests (df. df -i, etc) and include for your
information a copy of the output of the terminal session showing (as far as
I can tell) that there was no essential problem beyond the fact that the
directory *cpool* had not been created. I created this directory. I then
disabled all other web servers and got Apache2 running OK.

Anyway, I then tried to reinstall BackupPC from Ubuntu Software Centre but
the exact same thing occurred - same error Unable to make hard link...
etc. I thought it could just be a permissions problem, so for simplicity
speed I changed directory to /var/lib/backuppc and did a quick:

*root@jb:/var/lib/backuppc#*chmod 777 pc cpool

After doing this, I *was* able to start the program with:

*root@jb:/var/lib/backuppc#* /etc/init.d/backuppc start

and check into it with the web interface well, now, of course, I need to
re-read the documentation to find out how to locate the password to let me
in! Either that or reinstall the software and hope that with a successful
install the password will be shown on-screen... Ah well, at least with your
help I seem to have detected the main problem... permissions.

I've also had a look at the other bug report you pointed to and I conclude
that I have achieved the same outcome by a different method (i.e. I made the
directories everyone's rather than root's or the usual user's). My
approach is a bit of a blunt instrument and absolutely _not_ recommended for
production use! But it's fine for testing purposes.

Of course, the recent Linux Format magazine article [Issue LXF142 March
2011, page 43] *did* suggest that BackupPC's configuration is not for the
faint-hearted :-). I only thought about using this program because it would
allow me to back up my laptop to a NAS drive; many backup programs assume
you want to backup to a physically-connected USB hard drive. So I may be as
well-off in the long run sticking with Backup-Manager - or even using mc
instead. Equally, it's no sweat to use a variant of ftp (eg ncftp does
things quite nicely) to do the job. It's just I can never resist the chance
to explore another bit of excellent free software :-)

Thanks again for your interest and advice.

[Bug 713204] [NEW] package backuppc 3.1.0-9ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-04 Thread John Brown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: backuppc

I was using Ubuntu Software Centre to install BackupPC, but the script
failed. I suspect it was because although I'd installed Apache, I had
not yet set up Apache2 config files - I've been using lighttpd instead.
So when the script tried to restart the web server it failed. Maybe a
bit more clarity about the dependencies on the Info page would be
useful. I'll try to get Apache2 working properly and then do a re-
install from Ubuntu Software Centre.

[Bug 259168] Re: Network Manager unable to connect to PPTP VPN

2008-11-01 Thread John Brown Jr.
Today I installed the latest NetworkManager from deb

now finally connect to my VPN network! However, if I try to save the
password in the keyring, I still get a VPN error about 'shared secrets'.
And I am also having some DNS issues while connected to my VPN, although
these might as well be unrelated to NetworkManager.

Did not quite work for me in Intrepid Alpha 5 with all the updates. The
result is the same as in previous two Ubuntu releases. The system does
not wake up from suspend to ram on it's own. (Unless I don't hold down a
(any) key on the keyboard. Then it wakes up in ~10-15 seconds).

[Bug 163115] Re: HP nx7400 fails to resume from suspend to RAM

2008-02-04 Thread John Brown Jr.
I have installed Hardy Alpha 4, the problem now happens randomly. From 5
suspends, 2 were successull without any additional help, but 3 others
required to hold down a keyboard button (as in Gutsy). It is worth
noting that if I do not press any key, the system will sometimes come
out of suspend of it's own, but it takes ~ 2-3 minutes. In Gutsy the
problem with resume happened every single time, at least for me.

I am 100% sure if anything has actually changed since I tested Alpha 3
Live CD, but Alpha 4 is fully installed version.

Leann, do you still need that dmesg? It now functions in a similiar way
as in Gutsy (Gutsy's log is at the first post)

[Bug 163115] HP nx7400 fails to resume from suspend to RAM

2007-11-16 Thread John Brown Jr.
Public bug reported:

Hewlett Packard nx7400 fails to properly wake up after suspend to RAM. I
am running Gutsy with daily updates as of 16 November, 2007.

After suspend, the hard disc spins up, but the screen appears blank.

One workarround is to press any button on the keyboard (i'm using left
arrow). After each press the system seems to awake for a few seconds.
So, to complete the resume from suspend, I have to hold down any key for
a couple of seconds, and repeat this some 4-5 times. It then wakes up,
but is in kind of bad state. Keyboard events are delayed by ~1 second.
To shutdown/restart/suspend the system, one needs to hold any key again
to make any progress. The only thing which helps is a full shutdown,
after which keyboard and shutdown/restart function correctly until the
next time I try to suspend to RAM.

[Bug 146484] Language Support applet, default language dropdown problems

2007-09-28 Thread John Brown Jr.
Public bug reported:

There is something wrong in the way Language Support applet works

1) Installed Gutsy Beta, during installation changed keyboard layout to
Latvian (aposthrope variant), left default English system language.

2) After installation I was unable to change system default language to
Latvian. The language packs installed just fine, but default language
list in Language Support applet contained only English languages
(United States, Australian, British, etc.). Even after system restart.

3) Attempted to change default language to English (Astralian). After
reboot, the default language list in Language Support applet only
contained one language, (English - Australian), all other english
language variants were gone.

It is clearly something wrong in the way dropdown menu for default
languages is populated.

uname -a:
Linux john-desktop 2.6.22-12-generic #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 18:11:30 GMT 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

P.S.
There is a workarround. I removed English language alltogether, restarted, and
I was able to select Latvian as default. Afterwards, installed English support
again, now there were all languages (English and Latvian in the list, as I
would have expected).

[Bug 81767] Re: Suspend to RAM does not work well on HP notebook nx7400 in feisty

Feisty Beta almost works - it manages to wake up from suspend2ram just
fine, only the display stays off, as others have noted. It can be fixed,
though (at least it works for my nx7400 flavor).

There were 2 steps to enable display to resume:
1) I compiled i8042 as module, configured /etc/default/acpi-support to unload
psmouse i8042 before suspend.

2) It's also necessary to set SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=true in
/etc/default/acpi-support.

Now, there is only one problem left - DPMS sometimes does not work, that
is, display backlight stays on even when the display is supposedly
turned off by gnome power utilities (screensaver, etc). I have yet to
figure out how to solve this last problem.

[Bug 91222] Re: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX-400 not autodetected on Feisty

2007-03-17 Thread John Brown Jr.
Still didn't work on March 17 daily build. Feisty uses the same old
'vesa' driver both when booted from LiveCD/installed on HDD. Did March
17 build include the updated discover-data? Should I also test beta
release when it becomes available?

[Bug 92085] Re: Feisty network-manager 0.6.4-6ubuntu3 update killed NIC

2007-03-17 Thread John Brown Jr.
I can confirm that Feisty's NetworkManager indeed misbehaves when there
is more than one network card present. I have two cards, one connected
to public internet, one is for my home network. Only one card works at
the time, I can even use NetworkManager to choose, which one.

As others have noted, temporary workaround is to execute sudo
/etc/inid.d/networking restart after each boot. It is pain in the...
you know, where.

[Bug 92323] 'bad state' problem on HP nx/nc series laptops

2007-03-14 Thread John Brown Jr.
Public bug reported:

There are problems with ACPI management on my HP nx7400 laptop. The
laptop does not detect changes in power source (for example, when AC
adapter added/removed). There is also some weird fan behavior.
Furthermore, it does not wake up from suspend2ram - the screen remains
blank and keyboard does not respond to commands.

This is a common problem on all recent HP nc/nx series laptops. These
laptops go into 'bad state' on system shutdown/restart. When in 'bad
state' the before mentioned problems appear, but there are also reports
about some more nasty things - some laptops hang up to 20 seconds on
startup/booting from BIOS. One workaround is to remove 'psmouse' module
and 'i8042' module before switching off/restarting laptop.

The bug is appears to be fixed in 2.6.21-rc2 kernel version. See this
link for more information:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7689. More information about
the bug is also included here: http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg05126.html

Since this bug affects relatively large number of HP laptop users and
can have nasty consequences (CPU overheating because the fan is not
working), I suggest to include backported patch in Ubuntu kernels.

[Bug 91192] Re: kernel lockup on feisty

2007-03-13 Thread John Brown Jr.
Mattias, thank you for your post. At least we are getting somewhere :)

This could indeed be the problem as I actually have rt61 card, too. I
recompiled my kernel using sources from kernel.org, afterwards I had no
wireless support, but also no freezes. There has to be something wrong
with rt61 driver included with Feisty.

[Bug 91192] kernel lockup on feisty

2007-03-10 Thread John Brown Jr.
Public bug reported:

Computer freezes when running Feisty. This happens when using LiveCD,
but also with HDD-based-version with all updates installed. System
stops responding, mouse cursor freezes, no response to any keyboard
input, including Num Lock. Freezes occur on average every 2-3 minutes.
Only reboot helps after a freeze. When using console, the following
message is displayed:

[64.036621] BUG soft lockup detected on CPU#0!8

The above mentioned error was displayed when I booted the system, waited
for graphical login screen to appear, then immediately switched to
console by pressing Ctrl+F2, and started to type sudo apt-get, when the
system froze. I did not even manage to press enter key to execute the
command.

Edgy runs pretty stable on the same hardware.

[Bug 91222] 1280x1024 screen resolution not supported in Feisty

Public bug reported:

The highest resolution supported by Feisty is 1024x768, although my
monitor's, Samsung SyncMaster 913n native resolution is 1280x1024.

It seems that xorg.conf actually contains the correct resolution, but

[Bug 91222] Re: 1280x1024 screen resolution not supported in Feisty

2007-03-10 Thread John Brown Jr.
Hi, it's ancient NVIDIA card - GeForce 2 MX, AGP 4X with 64MB memory. It
seems that Feisty does not get along with it. I also tried to install
nvidia restricted drivers for it (sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-
legacy), but then X would crash at startup (had to copy back the old
xorg.conf from the backup).

I have this problem only on new Feisty installation. When I updated from
Edgy to Feisty (apt-get dist-upgrade, etc.), there was no such problems.
