on closing evolution today evolution-ews began spamming the dbus.log
found in ~/.cache/upstart/dbus.log
this log grew to 66GB in size and only stopped when the disk partition
was full thus making the system unusable. Solution was to delete
dbus.log from the CLI.

Tim, I don't think the question is WHY the thrashing starts. I
understand that trying to use more than the physical RAM installed on
your system will generate paging.
The problem as I see it is that Linux seems to become unusable once
thrashing starts. I will open a new bug about this, but I
I've also got this problem running JEdit 4.3.2 on Ubuntu 9.10 with Java
1.6.0_18. The problem is specifically in pasting to the shell (gnome-
terminal) I've not noticed it anywhere else.

It's indeed very easy to get thrashing---in my case, 2GB RAM running a
couple of memory-intensive problems like Mathematica and Gimp
Resynthesizer at the same time makes the system almost completely
unresponsive. I'm talking about Lucid Lynx with all the updates made.
