[Bug 1702071] Re: Search spins forever, returns no results.

2022-01-18 Thread John Leach
this is happened for me on 21.10 and I just upgraded to the development
release of 22.04 and it was still happening.

version 41.2-1

the spinner would just sit there spinning on a search.

strace of gnome-software showed it doing nothing really.

I sent a TERM signal to the gnome-software process and restarted it, and
search is working fine now

nothing seems very relevant in the systemd journal:

[Bug 1730728] Re: gnome-shell crashes randomly, error in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5400.1

2017-11-13 Thread John Leach
I have this same crashing problem, several times a day. Started about a
week ago.

I also have the same problem trying to report it. I have /var/crash
/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash which is 65M. When I try report it
using either appport-bug or apport-cli, those commands just exit
silently (apport-bug prompts me if I want to report a bug report first
and then does so). They create a 0 byte _usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.upload
file.

So I'm having trouble reporting it too.

For the record I've tried disabling all extensions, but that hasn't
helped.

[Bug 1251298] Re: Failed to sign on to LRMd with Heartbeat/Pacemaker

2015-10-26 Thread John Leach
an easier workaround than setting up your own symlinks is to just tell
heartbeat to use the lrmd binary provided by the pacemaker package
directly.

In /etc/heartbeat/ha.cf just add the line:

respawn root /usr/lib/pacemaker/lrmd

package still needs fixing though!

[Bug 1276156] [NEW] CVE-2013-6393 libyaml: heap-based buffer overflow when parsing YAML tags

2014-02-04 Thread John Leach
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1033990

A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the way libyaml parsed
YAML tags. A remote attacker could provide a specially-crafted YAML
document that, when parsed by an application using libyaml, would cause
the application to crash or, potentially, execute arbitrary code with
the privileges of the user running the application.

Fixed in Debian package 0.1.4-2+deb7u2

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=737076

That fix has been merged into Trusty already (0.1.4-3ubuntu1) but no
others.

[Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-07-12 Thread John Leach
I've done some more digging. Using the gstreamer debugging options, I've
at least identified a difference between totem and rhythmbox here.

I can see totem somehow translates the smb:// url to the fuse mount path
and just uses the filesrc gstreamer source element to read the file (and
can successfully play it):

0:00:00.722405619 2515 0x7ffd6bfd3730 INFO filesrc
gstfilesrc.c:374:gst_file_src_set_location: filename : /home/john/.gvfs/music
on lion/Music/Therapy/Therapy - Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3
0:00:00.722418749 2515 0x7ffd6bfd3730 INFO filesrc
gstfilesrc.c:375:gst_file_src_set_location: uri :
file:///home/john/.gvfs/music%20on%20lion/Music/Therapy/Therapy%20-%20Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

rhythmbox doesn't use the fuse mount - instead using the gio_src gstreamer
source element. It appears to be continue reading it fine, though as explained
above the output goes silent after about 1 or 2 seconds.

0:00:01.292036091 2468 0xf8c8d0 DEBUGgio_src
gstgiosrc.c:335:gst_gio_src_get_stream:source opened location
smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy%20-%20Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

But I can have gstreamer play the file successfully using giosrc using
gst-launch:

gst-launch-0.10 giosrc location=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy
- Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3 ! flump3dec ! autoaudiosink

I've attached debug logs of my gst-launch and the rhythmbox commands
attempting to play the same file - using the options
GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1
GST_DEBUG=gio_src:5,gio_base_src:5,basesrc:5,gnomevfs:5,filesrc:5

There are some differences between the two, but I'm not sure what is
relevant. In particularly, one appears to be in push mode and one pull.
They both read the file in 4k chunks, but rhythmbox does it from a weird
initial offset for some reason (perhaps due to it reading metadata info
though). Nothing obviously conclusive to me though.

[Bug 1024117] [NEW] fails to play mp3s from a samba share using gio

2012-07-12 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

I'm running the following command to play an mp3 file over a samba
share:

gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2 uri=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy
- Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

it starts to play, but after about 1 second the audio goes silent, but
the command doesn't finish. Playing the same file in rhythmbox does the
same thing and the progress indicator keeps moving, suggesting playing
but is just silent.

If play the same file from the same server but via ssh or sftp, it plays
fine:

gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2
uri=ssh://lion/media/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy -
Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

If I manually build a chain of sinks using giosrc directly, rather than
using playbin2, it plays ok:

gst-launch-0.10 giosrc location=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy
- Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3 ! flump3dec ! autoaudiosink

If I play a flac file from the same server (using playbin2 again), it
also plays fine (yes, you heard right, hehe!):

gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=smb://lion/music/Music/Admiral
Fallow/Boots Met My Face/Admiral Fallow - Boots Met My Face - 01 Dead
Against Smoking.flac

I've attached logs with GST_DEBUG=*:5 for all the above commands. They
all succeed except mp3 over smb.

I'm using gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.36-1 on Precise.

This started out as bug #977866 reported against rhythmbox, but I've
found that it's a gstreamer (or gvfs?) problem, so am resubmitting here
with a clearer report.

[Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

I've pared this down to a gstreamer bug and have opened a new ticket in
the gstreamer project:

It has some simple ways to reproduce the problem using gst-launcher -
could someone please test my findings there please, and mark the bug
confirmed.

[Bug 578853] Re: After changing device profile to Off, it can't be reenabled without restarting pulseaudio

2012-05-14 Thread John Leach
This happened here too with my Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I
(ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) but it's a bit more
complicated.

I added a second (usb) audio device and it showed up in the hardware
list, but when I selected it the input and output device lists didn't
change (they stayed set as the internal device).

So I set the internal one to Off which switched the output device to
Dummy output but the usb input and output devices still weren't
listed.

I then removed the usb device and set the internal one back (Analog
Stereo Duplex) but the output device still said Dummy Output. Logging
in and out didn't fix this.

After reading this bug report, I sent a TERM signal to the pulseaudio
daemon and it restarted and now it works fine. I can switch the profile
to off and back and it works fine without killing it. And I can also
switch to my usb device and back and it works as expected.

Seems a bit like pulseaudio wasn't properly responding (fyi, the
pulseaudio process was over 10 days old and didn't restart after a login
and logout (i.e: the process wasn't killed when I logged out).

[Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-05-02 Thread John Leach
Further investigation reveals that Rhythmbox can play flacs via a samba
share but not mp3s (sounds crazy, but I've triple checked!)

Totem can play both only if the ~/.gvfs fuse filesystem is mounted.
Today, the gvfs-fuse-daemon process had crashed (or otherwise stopped
for some reason) and totem was having the same problem as rhythmbox
(playing the first second or two of mp3s). When I remounted .gvfs totem
was able to play mp3s (though rhythmbox still could not).

So this is not fixed, but there are some more hints about the problem
there and this bug is beyond just rhythmbox.

Same problem here, playing a track from the local filesystem is fine but
when playing the same track from an samba share, it plays for maybe 1
second and then silence (though the progress bar keep moving as if it is
still playing).

Totem can play the same file from the same samba share with no problems.

[Bug 245779] Re: Server 8.04 LTS: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 11s! [bond1:3795] - bond - bond0

2009-01-20 Thread John Leach
I think there might be two bugs here. Something regarding bonding,
which I've seen on our Dell machines with Centos 5 too.

And then a general cpu softlock problem, which I'm also experiencing
with Hardy as a Xen guest - that I think is Xen related (I see it come
up with various processes - whatever is busy really). This bug here is
probably the best place to report those types of problems:

[Bug 259487] Re: xen virtual Machines and Dom0 crashes with BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0, CPU#1, CPU#2, CPU#3 stuck for 11s!

2009-01-20 Thread John Leach
I managed to reproduce this quite reliably so did some trials to find
out how to improve things.

This is 64bit dom0 on Xen 3.3.0 (On Centos) on Dell 2940s The domU is a
32bit Hardy box with 1G ram. With all the available hardy Xen kernels,
this soft lockup kept happening. I tried also tried
clocksource=jiffies. Then I tried the latest Intrepid kernels and
the problem was solved.

As I understand, the Intrepid kernel has the proper kernel.org upstream
xen support (rather than the forward ported patch from 2.6.18 as is
Hardy iirc). So whilst this solves the problem (for me), it's a pretty
big change and isn't something I'd expect to see backported to Hardy.

The new upstream Xen stuff changes the way block devices and the console
are done, so you can't switch without some tweaks to your Xen configs
(and guest OS config) but other than that it seemed to work fine with
Hardy.

Incidentally, I replaced this domU with a 64bit Hardy install, with the
standard 64bit Hardy kernel, and that also solved the soft lockups.

I experienced this bond driver lockup problem in a few Xen dom0

[Bug 279568] Re: X crashes when changing down resolution (Intrepid)

2008-11-03 Thread John Leach
On further investigation, this is happening when changing down
resolution. Changing up is fine (other than compiz not re-adjusting,
but that is for another bug report). Changing down causes Xorg to
crash. I got a backtrace from gdm of the crash:

Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.

[Bug 279568] Re: X sometimes crashes after hitting apply in screen resolution applet (Intrepid)

2008-10-25 Thread John Leach
This happens to me too, with Intrepid If I change resolution with the
resolution applet, or change to external display and back again, X seems
to crash and kick me back out to the gdm login screen. This happens
every time for me (though not switching to external display, only when
switching back to internal).

This is on a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 with the default package basic skeleton
xorg.conf. Worked fine in Hardy.

[Bug 281486] Re: [Intrepid] Regression: wrong GDM resolution when using external display on i945

2008-10-24 Thread John Leach
This happens for me too on my Lenovo Thinkpad R61 (with an i965 though).
With a second monitor just connected, the resolution of the gdm login
screen on the internal screen is 1024x768, rather than 1280x800 as it
should be (the external monitor I have connected is not widescreen, but
it does go up and to and beyond 1280x1024.

This is with the latest updates for Intrepid and a completely standard
basic xorg.conf (from running sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg)

[Bug 283130] Re: rhythmbox no longer plays music from a samba share

2008-10-14 Thread John Leach
I ran rhythmbox and collected the debug output - it was rather big so I
cut it down to the relevant stuff.

I truncated my .xsession-errors file before running rhythmbox and it is
still empty after running it - I think I truncated it wrong and need to
login and out now, but looking back in the old one it only really seemed
to contain the same connection_message_func(): Callback errors anyway.

[Bug 283130] [NEW] rhythmbox no longer plays music from a samba share

2008-10-14 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid, rhythmbox refuses to play music
files from a samba share, displaying a small red error icon against each
track as it tries to play them

This is with rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu2

rhythmbox shows a number of these messages on the console as I try to
play music from a samba share:

connection_message_func(): Callback
CALLBACK: fill-authentication!!!
connection_message_func(): Callback
CALLBACK: fill-authentication!!!

The music was imported from the samba share on Hardy and used to play
normally. I've also tried reimporting on Intrepid but it still fails to
play.

The samba share is a gvfs mount. Nautilus can see the files and they can
be played with Totem.

[Bug 227837] [NEW] overzealous masquerading affects vm to vm traffic

2008-05-07 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

The default masquerade rule appears to be:

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.122.0/24 -j MASQUERADE

but this causes all internally routed guest to guest traffic to be
masqueraded too (breaking such things as redhat cluster dlm connections
in my case).

replacing the rule with the following seems to be a good solution:

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.122.0/24 -d ! 192.168.122.0/24

[Bug 96635] Re: adding gnome-main-menu on a panel takes ages

2008-03-26 Thread John Leach
according to the changelog, this was supposedly fixed in a changeset of
2007-03-16 by Jim Krehl [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Simplified the TileTable object to make it more generic. Stop loading
tiles after the table limit has been reached, this is to prevent delays
associated with large ~/.recently-used{,.xbel} files. Made the
TileTable more responsive to user changes, instead of waiting for those
changes to be written to the file system.

doesn't work though (i tested with trunk code too).

[Bug 196470] Re: [hardy] flash plugin can't play videos at all then other program is using audio device

2008-03-09 Thread John Leach
Confirmed here on Hardy, latest updates from the repository. Play for 2
to 3 seconds with no sound output then stops (though the vid keeps
buffering). Seeking starts again for 2 - 3 seconds. If I kill the
pulseaudio daemon and reload the page, the video plays perfectly, with
sound.

If I remove the libflashsupport package (which I have to force, because
flashplugin-nonfree depends on it) things works as expected: flash
movies play - alongside music from totem or whatever too.

So I think this is actually either a bug with libflashsupport or
pulseaudio, though I'll leave as flashplugin-nonfree.

Additionally, I can't output sound using pulseaudio. If I set the sound
preferences to pulseaudio and click test, I hear no test sound. Sound
*input* works with pulseaudio though.

ii flashplugin-nonfree 9.0.115.0ubuntu4
ii libflashsupport 1.9-0ubuntu1
ii pulseaudio0.9.9-1ubuntu2

[Bug 199030] Re: Can't close SCIM

System/Administration/Language Support - disable the checkbox Enable

After applying this it tells me I need a reboot! Did it upgrade my

So can someone confirm that this is not enabled by default now? The SCIM

enabled by default.

[Bug 200197] [NEW] Language Support interface requires a reboot

2008-03-09 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-selector

When changing the input method option (enable support to enter complex
characters), clicking apply says:

Reboot required. To complete the changes a reboot is required so that
the new functionality is activated.

Is that really the case? The only other time I need to reboot my
machine is after a kernel upgrade, and then I get an icon reminding me
in the notification area.

[Bug 195357] Re: huawei e220 hardy alpha 5 - problem

2008-03-09 Thread John Leach
I cherry picked from oozie just what is needed to stop the usb
disconnect (basically, i think udev needs to load usbserial with those
vendor and product strings whenever it spots the huawei cdrom device
appearing (rather than the mass storage drivers, which causes
disconnection of the serial devices for some reason).

cat /etc/udev/rules.d/99-huawei.rules

SUBSYSTEM==block, \
ACTION==add, \
SYSFS{idVendor}==12d1, \
SYSFS{idProduct}==1003, \
RUN+=/sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1003, \
OPTIONS=ignore_device

It now works with the vodafone python program and connects fine (in
fact, I'm using it right now to file this bug).

John.

[Bug 195357] Re: huawei e220 hardy alpha 5 - problem

2008-03-08 Thread John Leach
Same here with latest updated Hardy. It worked perfect in gutsy, but
with Hardy it is detected but is then disconnected a few seconds
later. It does this in a loop until it is unplugged. See the dmesg
output below containing lines from when the device is plugged in to when
it is lost.. It is usual that it is detected as 2 serial ports and a
mass storage device (the storage device just contains the windows
drivers) though I'm not sure about it being detected as a CDROM though.

Strangely, network-manager is seeing the hal device notifys. Not sure if
that is normal (copied in below too)

[Bug 199546] [NEW] erratic and almost entirely broken with Intel card in Hardy

2008-03-07 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

hi,

the displayconfig-gtk tool just doesn't work right at all on my Lenovo
Thinkpad R61 with the latest Hardy updates. Unfortunately I've not
tried it before so don't know how well it worked previously.

It lists 3 screens, two entries for Screen 1, and one for Screen 2 (my
external monitor). The model names and resolutions are all wrong. The
graphics card list show two cards. The first one as none and the
second one as vesa. Changing any of these and applying creates a
config that prevents X from starting up (goes into the rescue mode
thing).

I've attached some output from lshw and xrandr. I'm currently running
the laptop with an external monitor (with the internal one disabled).
This config was achieved with the xrandr cmdline tool.

This machine has a Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 graphics card.

ii displayconfig-gtk 0.3.7

[Bug 199549] [NEW] Screen resolution settings not applying

2008-03-07 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

In the latest updated Hardy, the gnome-display-settings tool doesn't
work. It shows my two screens ok, but settings to them don't take
effect. My two screens are an internal LCD and an external VGA monitor.

I can set these how I need them using the xrandr cmdline tool, but the
gui tool just doesn't make any changes.

When i click apply, I can see the Sending client message message on
stdout but nothing happens.

Graphics card is: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Laptop is a
Lenovo Thinkpad R61.

[Bug 198385] [NEW] Emptying trash shows a Preparing dialog with a non-moving progress bar

2008-03-04 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When emptying the trash (I used the Empty Deleted Items button at the
top of the file list in Nautilus) a new gvfs style dialog pops up with a
progress bar at 0% saying Preparing. It stays at 0% for the duration
of the empty and then disappears when it's done.

I imagine it should say Emptying Deleted Items and the progress bar
should either update, or not be displayed at all.

[Bug 197994] [NEW] Hardy: Mouse disappears when page loading in firefox

2008-03-03 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu hardy (development branch)

Hardy, updated to all the latest packages in the repository.

Mouse disappears when the page is loading in Firefox. If I hover over
links during the loading, the cursor reappears (as the linking
cursor). Another bug report similar to this suggested it might be
animated cursor support, but this Intel graphics card has worked fine in
Gutsy. I've tried a bunch of the other cursors too with the same
behaviour (though maybe they're all animated).

This occurs with or without Compiz.

[Bug 185311] Re: hardy, locking assertion failure, xorg/libsdl

2008-03-03 Thread John Leach
Confirmed here too with Netbeans 6. Worked fine with Gutsy.

export LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=1 fixed the problem for now.
