Just reported a bug with (current) Thunderbird 78 on Ubuntu 18.04 and
20.04, and I was told that this version of Thunderbird is now 'nearly
unsupported'. Is it expected that Thunderbird 91 will be released on
20.04?

  When achiving large numbers of messages from my Inbox, Thunderbird
  leaves the context menu on-screen as an artifact. It's very annoying
  because thunderbird won't respond, but the context menu still stays in
  front of other windows when I switch to another program, eg LibreOffice
  as shown in the attached screenshot.
  
  Perhaps this is a problem with Unity (I am using Unity 2D here), but
  more likely I think it is a problem with Mozilla running this archive
  operation in an inefficient 'foreground' way, when really it should be a
  nicely backgrounded task (eg using the Activity Manager).

Sure is a complicated story.

But this Alt+F issue is larger than just gnome-terminal. As you can see,
it also breaks LibreOffice, which is a core desktop app for basically
ALL users. So that bug need to be fixed, and so becomes no longer a
reason to remove the mnemonics from gnome-terminal.

I re-checked, indeed on my system, the ALT+F doesn't work for me. This
is on Bionic 18.04 LTS, which I hope to stick with for some time.

If there is a fix for the problem of missing first-mnemonic actions,
then I hope it can be backported! That seems the be the main theme here,
with the issues of Pluma and Terminal as secondary issues.

As of 18.04, it seems that support for the GTKCairo and GTKAgg (GTK2)
backends for matplotlib (2.1.1-2ubuntu3) are broken.

To demonstrate, the following runs without error on 16.04, but produces
error messages (see below*) on 18.04:

ipython
import matplotlib; matplotlib.use('GTKAgg')
import pylab

The final error message is "ImportError: No module named _backend_gdk".
It is clear that the _backend_gdk file is not provided in the python-
matplotlib package, whereas it was in Ubuntu 16.04; see below from 'dpkg
-L python-matplotlib':

It seems that the Build-Depends for python-matplotlib should perhaps include 
python-gtk2-dev in order to resolve this problem:

Updating this report for Ubuntu 18.04.

I made a new install of Ubuntu 18.04 and switched to the Unity shell.

LibreOffice: can't use ALT+F to access the File menu. ALT+E (etc) work
fine; just not ALT+F.

Terminal: nothing seems to allow me to enable the ALT+F etc mnemonics in
Gnome Terminal. Seems to be a separate bug.

Synaptic: works perfectly; it is not integrated with the Unity menu.

Thunderbird: works perfectly; it is integrated with the Unity menu correctly.
Firefox: also works perfectly.

Rhythmbox: as with LibreOffice, all the shortcuts work except for ALT+F
(the first menu is not responsive, even though the 'F' in 'File' is
underlined, just as for LibreOffice.

Gedit: as for Rhythmbox, LibreOffice: ALT+F doesn't work.

Pluma: works fine, except that ALT+F menu appears in the wrong place!!
Appears in the top-left corner of the window instead of near the
menubar.

@kurshid-alam: note, all of these apps *DO HAVE* menubars, all of which
*DO APPEAR* when I type ALT. The only issue here is whether the
displayed mnemonics are actually enacted or not.

@kurshid-alam: This issue was not present in Ubuntu 16.04, so I don't
think it can relate to the 5-year old patch that you mentioned.

On a clean Ubuntu 18.04, the Gnome Terminal menubar mnemonics are
disabled, which makes quick launching of terminals with different
profiles difficult.

There is still a setting for turning on/off mnemonics in dconf-editor:

dconf read /org/gnome/terminal/legacy/mnemonics-enabled

I have set this option to true, but nothing changes!

If I can hypothesise what the problem is here, I can see that terminal
does some clever stuff to create two different menu .ui files using XML
manipulation, eg

I understand there were some tricks required to implement the Unity
menus on top of standard GTK applications, so perhaps this switching of
the menu descriptions causes problems the way Unity picks up the menu
information and exposes it.

Is there a solution for this? Is there a way to compile terminal
differently to get the with-mnemonic version instead of the without-
mnemonic version, if it's not possible for on-the-fly switching to be
enabled?

This seems to be the same bug as reported elsewhere,
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=815924

However the workaround mentioned there (see 'strace') is not sufficient,
there seem to be numerous files not in the location expected by yacas.

One solution though seems to be to run yacas from the directory
/usr/share/yacas. In that case, it seems to find all the required files,
and there is no need for the symlinks to be added.

[Bug 1734817] [NEW] keyboard: alt-F doesn't open File menu

In Ubuntu 17.10, something seems to have gone wrong with the keyboard
bindings for the application menus (File, Edit, View, Insert, etc).
Specifically, the first menu item cannot be opened using its assigned
shortcut alt+key combination.

In LibreOffice 5.4.1.2, I can use alt-E, alt-V, alt-H, alt-A (for
tAble). All of them work EXCEPT alt-F, which is the first one in the
list.

In Gedit 3.22.1 and Evince 3.26.0, it is the same. I can't use alt-F,
but I can use all the others.

Interestingly, in Pluma 1.18.2, everything is fine. Also, in Firefox
57.0 everything is fine. Also in Synaptic 0.84.2, which doesn't
integrate correctly with Unity, alt-F and the others work fine.

It seems that the 'modern' GNOME 3 applications are all failing, and
then also LibreOffice as well, which maybe is using GTK3 just like
GNOME3. Otherwise, I don't know.

I think this bug is not the same as bug #790687. That bug is just about
the case where the desktop is focussed, not other applications in
general.

It's some time since I used IPOPT on Ubuntu 14.04, but recently I found
I was unable to use it in serial mode. This was previously possible. It
seems that the compiled IPOPT shared library /usr/lib/libipopt.so now
has a hard link to 'libdmumps-4.10.0.so' and 'libmpi.so.1' on Ubuntu
14.04.

Meanwhile, on Ubuntu 17.10, /usr/lib/libipopt.so depends on
'libdumps_seq-5.1.1.so' and has no dependency on MPI.

This situation with IPOPT defaulting to MPI on some platforms and not on
others is troublesome. If it's not too much trouble, could recent IPOPT
packages be backported to 14.04? As far as I can tell, there are very
few packages (if any) that depend directly on ipopt, so this is mostly a
package for developers to use.

In an updated Ubuntu 17.10 installation, LibreOffice 5.4 is messing up
in my Unity menu. The menu shows 'Unknown Application Name' and the
alt-F O keystroke to open files doesn't do anything. All  of the other
alt-key combinations for the menus apart from the File menu work
correctly, just not the File menu. The File menu shows the underlined
'F' when Alt is pressed, but Alt-F nor Alt,F will open that menu. The
only keyboard option is Alt-E then left-arrow to get to the File menu.

Screenshot attached shows the 'Unknown Application Name' issue.

I had this problem too. It is completely impossible to self-discover the
solution to this problem, due to the poor UI design.

The developer probably wanted to have the feature of adding text to the
indicator, but implemented it in such a way that users can't really
discover how to turn it on or off, and usually only do so accidentally,
eg by removing the extra line in 'indicator items' list (it is not
apparent why that line exists; it looks like a bug).

When this text started appearing, I thought that it was some array-
length bug where n+1 items were being shown in the indicator instead of
the selected number. It didn't even occur to me that that would be by
design...

Annoying -- the developers over at Fedora seem to suggest that there is
an unwillingness to provide support for any GUI that runs as root.
Surely a problem for many admin tools like this?

Workaround is easy though:

command-line:
xhost + && sudo synaptic && xhost -

Probably there is something similar that could be done to change the
launcher for synaptic, along similar lines?

I updated to the Remmina PPA latest version and it works better. But
there are still strange cases where full-screen Remmina freezes my
control over Ubuntu. I experience mouse control but no keyboard control.
It seems like the 'grab keyboard' option gets stuck in some way. And I
can't close or disable Remmina in such cases. Possibly only with RDP
connections, I don't seem to see this bug with VNC connections.

That would be great. For years now I have been assuming it was broken,
since there is no acknowledgement of any form. Consequently I have been
pressing 'cancel' instead of submitting the report. Why not wait until
the report has been sent before closing the dialog, for example, and
giving an error if it isn't sent?

Additionally, sometimes I would have liked to described what I was doing
at the time of the crash -- sometimes there's some context that seems
like it would be useful. It would be great to have that option offered.

For quite some time now, I have experienced apport popup windows
reporting certain crashes. When I click to submit a report, the popup
window disappears and nothing further happens.

In the past, when closing the popup window, I used to see a new
Launchpad bug report where I could enter further details about what was
happening, or check that the bug had already been reported by others.

However that feature seems to have been disabled or become broken some
time ago.

If apport is going to silently ignore my request to report my bug, or is
reporting it somehow without feedback me, then either of these is poor
design, since there has been no feedback to me as the user about what is
happening.

Can I suggest that apport be changed to inform the user of whether or
not the crash report will be uploaded, and whether or not the user will
be redirected to give extra details? Then, if the firefox window fails
to popup, I can report a separate bug about that if needed.

move.

This package is 230MB in current Ubuntu 16.04, but looks like its up to
700 MB in upcoming versions. Is there anything that can be done to
improve the granularity of this, for example by packaging fonts
separately by name, and then having a metapackage that groups them all
to provide the current behaviour where required?

For example, when installing 'python-sympy', does it *really* need all
of these 200+ MB of fonts? Seems very unlikely, but current packaging
gives no way round.

crash:

Adding a note to mention that this bug makes is quite difficult to use the PPA 
with Github repositories. I wanted to try to build my own .deb for Jabref, so I 
started by trying to import the code from the Jabref github pages. Here is 
where I got to:

However, when importing from Github, there is an error from Launchpad,
specifically from "/srv/importd.launchpad.net/production/launchpad-

A little surprised by this... surely other people are importing code
from Github?

So can you please clarify the behaviour I should see when using this on a 
stable release of Ubuntu? At the moment, I see no visual feedback that anything 
has happened at all -- no browser is opened, no dialog says that the error is

Hi there

This bug is going to be super-difficult to find, as it seems to be quite
intermittent.

When I click the indicator-datetime on my Ubuntu 16.04 panel, it freezes
the whole system, everything becomes unresponsive. My indicator-
multiload stops moving, and nothing responds to the mouse at all
(although as I recall, the mouse pointer still moves). Waiting for 10-20
seconds, nothing changes.

I found that pressing ctrl-alt-1 followed by ctrl-alt-7 unfreezes the
system, and things continue as normal.

Not sure if this could be a panel problem or specifically an indicator-
datetime problem. But I'll report it here and if I manage to make it
repeatable, I'll add more comments later.

This has happened to me on two different 16.04 machines -- a laptop and
a new recently-installed desktop.

One of the easiest things we can do to make LibreOffice documents look
good when importing .docx and .pptx is to have fonts that follow the
metrics of popular Microsoft Office fonts, specifically Calibri and
Cambria. The fonts 'Carlito' and 'Caladea' are already in the Ubuntu
repositories, but they are not installed by default. It makes a lot of
sense to install them by default with LibreOffice.

If you want I can give you examples of crappy-looking PPTX imports
before, and then much nicer, after installing these fonts.

This has been happening to me too. A program crashes, and the dialog
pops up showing the sigsegv etc and then I click to report the crash,
but the dialog closes and no browser window opens.

It's really bad... lots of crashes must be going un-reported on 16.04!

Looks to me that the 'Recent files' menu item needs to be removed,
unless a way can be found to re-port the old behaviour into the Unity
menus again. No point having that entry with just 'Reopen closed tabs'
in it; it's misleading.

I don't like the Gnome "Open \/" menu so much as it doesn't work well at
all with the keyboard. If I type alt-O, then I can't type alt-D to open
the 'Other Documents' button, because Unity assumes I want the Document
menu in the main menu-bar.  Also, there is no alt-O-1, alt-O-2
keybinding to quickly access past files -- you have to hit the arrow
keys until you highlight the file you want.

Are convenient key-bindings falling from favour somehow? Same problems
occurring all the time with LibreOffice these days too...

In  Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Unity, various standard keyboard shortcuts
have pointlessly vanished. Some favourite examples include:

* alt+I+R -- insert rows in Calc
* alt+I+R -- insert cross-Reference in Writer
* alt+O+H -- format character in Writer

Meanwhile, in some cases, new menu entries have been added which take
over the old shortcuts, and the underline has been removed from the
old/standard shortcut. I would really like to know the thinking behind
this -- shortcuts like this are wired into the DNA of long-standing
users, and it's a ongoing source of irritation when ALT+KEY shortcuts
are randomly rearranged.

Furthermore, some glitchiness in Unity seems to be responsible for
inconsistent response of menus when typing the ALT+KEY+KEY sequences.
For example, Alt+I+O+F to insert a formula (used all the type when
typesetting mathematical documents) gives different actions depending on
HOW FAST THE KEYS ARE TYPED. Sometimes it opens the 'Flip' menu,
sometimes it opens the 'Form' menu, and sometimes it inserts a formula
(at least for the moment...)

Would be great if some kind of process could be put in place to ensure
consistent behaviour in relation to LO keyboard shortcuts going forward,
and at least ensuring that common actions *DO HAVE* a keyboard option in
the menus. Currently things like insert rows have not discoverable
shortcut key sequence at all!

The LibreOffice icons are poorly designed and too hard to see in the latest 
Ubuntu 16.04 version of LibreOffice (5.1.4.2). The problems are that
* the red colour on the menu is misleading as it suggests that the button is to 
control border colour, but it's not.
* the grey background fill inside the icons is quite dark and makes it 
difficult to distinguish the subtle difference in border shapes on the 
different icon options
* the white colour used to imply the absence of a border doesn't have any 
visual correspondence to how borderless cells appear in the main window (they 
don't appear white; they appear black and thin)

I suggest reverting to the earlier icons, which were much easier to see,
and I suggest a more general review of the icons being distributed with
LibreOffice, because this issue is likely to cause significantly reduced
usability especially for older users.

The workaround, similar to "/etc/init.d/network-manager restart" does
restore a network connection, but doesn't restore the indicator to a
correct state.

Even though I remain connected via wifi, the indicator shows that I am
connected via a wired connection. Before restarting the service, there
is no connection at all. After restarting the service, the indicator
shows no wireless network names in the indicator menu drop-down, even
though I am connected via wifi (with no ethernet cables connected to my
machine at all since the system was booted up).

Hi there

When achiving large numbers of messages from my Inbox, Thunderbird
leaves the context menu on-screen as an artifact. It's very annoying
because thunderbird won't respond, but the context menu still stays in
front of other windows when I switch to another program, eg LibreOffice
as shown in the attached screenshot.

Perhaps this is a problem with Unity (I am using Unity 2D here), but
more likely I think it is a problem with Mozilla running this archive
operation in an inefficient 'foreground' way, when really it should be a
nicely backgrounded task (eg using the Activity Manager).

This bug is resolved by modifying a new 14.04 server to install the
apache2 packages from
https://launchpad.net/~ondrej/+archive/ubuntu/php5, ie

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ondrej/php5
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Worked for me... the new Apache2 packages should be urgently included in
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, since users upgrading their Subversion servers will
inevitably have horrible problems.

Mnemonics work in Gedit, don't know what's going on with Nautilus.
Tested with current 12.04 system. Mnemonics also work in 'dumb' (nothing
special for Unity) PyGTK applications, so something automatic about GTK
on Unity is working correctly, at least in some cases.

Björn, did you take a look at the changes from Ken Clive? Can you
describe the extra changes you are making??

Am I write in understanding that libvclplug_gtklo.so is a
plugin/extension to LibreOffice being provided by Ubuntu for the
purposes of Unity/GTK integration, and that somewhere in that code must
be missing something to do with registration of keyboard shortcuts for
the top-level menus?

I have a PyGTK-based application that I maintain which includes GTK
menus. They get integrated into Unity totally automatically. So could it
be just as simple as converting a File and Edit into _File and
_Edit somewhere, so that GTK/Unity picks up the key bindings?

Neither the 'python-numpy' nor 'python-numpy-doc' package contains a
file called 'numpy.i', required for writing NumPy compatible C-code-
based Python extensions/modules.

According to the documentation, this file is supposed to be included in 
docs/numpy/numpy.i, but it clearly hasn't been flagged for inclusion in the Deb 
packages.

This file is important. I think it should be part of 'python-numpy-dev'
if such a package is going to be provided, but it could just as well be
part of the doc package. FWIW the documentation on how to *use* numpy.i
has already been packaged, just not the

FWIW I note that a file called 'numpy.i' seems to be present in a
package called 'python-instant'. That seems to me to be a bad place for
that file to be located, given that it would be relevant to want to use
that file *outside* python-instant.

I have just installed LibreOffice 4.0.1 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
(1:4.0.1~rc1-2ubuntu1~precise1~ppa7) from the LibreOffice PPA.

This bug is still present, but with this upgrade, the default is for the
lo-menubar functionality to be included by default, which is intensely
annoying as it breaks all my intuitive-level keyboard use in LibreOffice
and is a major hit on productivity.

Please fix this urgently! Unity integration should absolutely NOT be
incorporated into the default packaging until this issue is fixed (yes,
I realise I am using a PPA version currently).

This bug is reported in Evolution's bugzilla, but it present in Ubuntu
12.04. My particular IMAP server does not respond to the 'pings' that
Evolution reports making, possibly to keep alive a server connection (I
am not sure exactly what type of pings these are). Evolution sits there
waiting for the ping to complete, but since my server doesn't respond,
all of Evolution's actions are queued up behind this unresponsive event.
Makes use of Evolution very slow/frustrating. Evolution needs to provide
a way to shorten the timeout or disable this ping activity.

For some time now, my Empathy window has always shown up with an error
about failing to connect to my Google Talk account. When I look at the
Accounts dialog, I saw TWO copies of my Google Talk account. If I
removed one of these by clicking the [-] icon, then the error message
would go away and everything work work fine.

Except that every time I started Empathy, the duplicate account would
reappear.

Today, I thought I would be clever. I renamed the duplicate account by
hovering over its name-text in the Accounts box, and adding some random
text at the end of the name. Then I clicked the [-] to remove the
duplicate account.

This time, when the Accounts dialog closed, there were no online
contacts shown. When I attempted to open the Accounts box now, nothing
appears.

When I type 'empathy-accounts', nothing shows, and the command exits
silents after about 20 seconds.

Now my Empathy is completely broken -- I can't see a way to refresh it
back to no accounts again. Where are the Accounts stored? How can I
clean them out? What's causing this crashed/broken behaviour?

I'm on latest Empathy with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I've got a CardDAV addressbook stored in the free 'fruux' service and
I've set up Evolution to use it to store my addresses. But it's very
slow when writing emails. If I write the person's name in the 'to' box,
it's very slow to recognise the name and add an underline to indicate
it's been recognised. If I click the 'to' button and attempt to search
for a name, the bottom of the dialog shows Loading address book
summary and it takes 10-20 seconds until the my search result appears.

I'm using a slow (3G phone) internet connection, but I have the address
book set with copy book content locally for offline operation.
However, it appears that when I'm on a *slow* connection, it ignores the
local copy and keeps using the online copy regardless.

Is there some way that this situation could be improved, so that the
online content is only synchronised periodically, and not every time I
add an email address to a new email?

I'm using latest Evolution 3.2.3 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, I have lost some important capability
on my Lenovo X1's clickpad.

Previously, I was able to click the left 'button' of the clickpad
(actually the bottom-left corner area, with my left index finger) then
drag my right index finger around on the centre of the clickpad in order
to select a region of text, drag an object, etc.

Two-finger scrolling is still working correctly, but dragging has died.

I saw some comments here
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes/UbuntuDesktop)
about clickpad behaviour  but considering that this was working in
11.10, and that message mentions no known regressions, I figured this
still needed to be reported. And in fact, it says When the button is
pressed on a ClickPad device, a second finger may be used to drag the
cursor.  which is exactly what isn't working now for me.

The click and drag works if I click in the centre of the clickpad, but
not if I click in the corner where I customarily do it.

1. click clock in unity-2d-panel
2. 'Time and date settings'
3. tab 'Clock'
4. button 'Choose Locations...'
5. green 'plus' button
6. type 'Sydney'
7. wait... nothing happens
8. press enter... nothing happens

Again, this GUI is quite unable to tell you if anything is going wrong,
or not as expected. For example, if it's failing to load a location
database or something, there should be some way of reporting that.

I attempted to add 'Sydney' and 'Canberra' to the 'other locations' list
of the clock applet.

The locations aren't recognized (I'm not sure ANY locations that I type
are recognized) so for the moment it looks as if the location database
is missing, or some other bug is stopping the locations from being
parsed correctly.

The new interface is very unhelpful because it's not clear if the lookup
is failing to do anything, or whether the placename is unknown, or
whether I have simply failed to click/type something. There should be a
status bar giving some feedback, or something like that.

Could it be that this is related to missing Localisation data on my
system? If so, the control center should notify me rather than failing
silently.

[Bug 978196] [NEW] pkg-config settings for ipopt should default to serial mumps

With the new packaging of IPOPT for Ubuntu 12.04, the default pkgconfig
file for IPOPT has changed to referencing the parallel build of MUMPS

Firstly, the coinor-libipopt-dev package should DEPEND on libmumps-dev
since the dmumps library is not available unless that package is
installed.

Secondly, preferably coinor-libipopt-dev should depend on libmumps-seq-
dev instead, since previous IPOPT packages have used the serial build of
MUMPS and this change breaks compatibility.

In fact there appears to be no way to make use of the serial version of
mumps with IPOPT without manually editing the IPOPT pkgconfig file
(/usr/include/pkgconfig/ipopt.pc) to replace '-ldmumps' with
'-ldmumps_seq'. Shouldn't we have some way to flag serial/parallel MUMPS
via the pkg-config mechanism?

And fourthly, the behaviour is not consistent for the user: 
-- if there is NO Firefox already running, then Firefox pops to the front when 
it's opened. 
-- if there IS already a Firefox running, then it DOESN'T pop the the front.

The latter case just looks like the former case, except with Firefox
being broken!

I STRONGLY disagree with this!

Firstly, if I click a link in an email, it's because I want to look at
the contant of that link NOW, not later when it's loaded.

Secondly, not popping the window to the front means I don't get to know
if the link was valid or whether my browser has actually started to load
the page or not... you break the whole visual feedback process by not
showing the window to the user.

Thirdly, this would completely baffle people's grandparents.

[Bug 888499] Re: dash menu doesn't always show complete search results

Followup to the earlier report. When I am experiencing this problem, the
other dash items, Media Apps, Internet Apps and More Apps are
unresponsive. Clicking them makes them flash, but nothing new is
displayed.

This seems to be some kind of complete failure of the dash to
read/generate its internal app database, something like that.

How can I debug that, to give you more information?

Further followup: I found that if I already have LibreOffice running, I
don't get these errors. Seems that unoconv is invoking a headless
version of libreoffice, then closing it if no longer needed. When I have
open documents, it doesn't close (or open) a new LO hence no error.

My script is just a Python script that invokes 'unoconv' over and over
with different files, outputting each as text to stdout.

I have a script that processes a bunch of LibreOffice files to extract
information. The script runs 'unoconv', but as of current LibreOffice on
Ubuntu 11.10, unoconv is outputtting a bunch of warnings to stdout every
time it runs.

Seems as though some command line arguments have been changed but the
corresponding unoconv stuff hasn't been updated.
