Is there anything I can do to fix this myself? How do I change the

[Bug 793914] [NEW] Varnish refuses to start due to old process ID residing in shmfile lucid

2011-06-07 Thread Johnathon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: varnish

After a kernel-upgrade driven reboot, varnish refused to start stating
something similar to:
storage_file: filename: /var/cache/varnish/todo-list-test.bin size 256 MB.
SHMFILE owned by running varnishd master (pid=1003)
(Use unique -n arguments if you want multiple instances.)

Killing the pid running the varnish process allowed varnish me to start
varnish. The process I had to kill was a getty process, not exactly what
I want to kill..

[Bug 775427] [NEW] Bottom toolbar, used by many plugins, has vanished.

2011-05-02 Thread Johnathon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

The toolbar, normally at the bottom of firefox has been removed as part
of the upgrade to Maverik. This is problematic, because a couple of
plugins I use (and am required to use for work) put information there,
that I really need in my daily work, for example the Nagios Checker
plugin.

I can't find anywhere in the firefox interface to restore the bar. I
notice it appears during a page load, providing a progress bar, but that
doesn't show me my plugins, and wouldn't be useful even if it did.

Great, thanks.

Would have been useful for that to have been in the release notes :)

For anyone who finds this later, the status-bar returning plugin is
called, 'status-4-evar'.

Re: [Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found

2010-09-01 Thread Johnathon Weare
Either:
1. release notes must include issue of deprecated support for floppies
(does not work), or
2. bug must be prioritised accordingly

If 2., then I suggest a high priority as floppies are actively used for:
a) BIOS updates
b) legacy files
c) supported has not been dropped by other equivalent OSs (I think)

[Bug 577897] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 hangs at shutdown but not at restart

2010-05-18 Thread Johnathon Weare
I'm seeing exactly the same problem on 3 out of 3 older systems with
lubuntu 10.04 on pentium 3s. With acpi on, it intermittently fails to
turn off as described, but restart works. When acpi isn't enabled on one
of the pre 2000 bioses, it consistently does not shut down. Using
acpi=force makes all three machines intermittent - approximately 10%
fail rate.

Sounds now functions after an update, from the motherboard's soundcard.
Sound still fails out of the Creative Labs soundcard, but I'm happy
enough with the on-board one in linux. I only use the soundcard in

2010-03-29 Thread Johnathon
Hello David,

No. It doesn't matter how I configure the sound output, I've gone
through all the settings, I can't get it to give me any sound, on the
onboard-intel sound chipset, or the creative labs soundblaster.

As a short-term solution, is there a way I can switch back to ALSA?

Best regards,

Johnathon

Consistency in the interface is all that matters. Moving to the left is
inconsistent with a Firefox tabs as others have mentioned above. I
personally like right placement so it is above the scrollbar. Changing

whim.

[Bug 53897] Re: Disappearing panels/menus in Xubuntu

2010-03-15 Thread Johnathon Weare
We do a some xubuntu installs and the panel disappearing is a big
problem. It happens in jaunty, and karmic. I'm hoping it's fixed in
lucid. Fine, I know how to restart the menu but it's a fundamental
problem for end users that the menu has gone, and rebooting doesn't fix
it. If they cant run anything but a terminal, its a critical bug.

If this was fixed at one time, it has now regressed because I am using
all latest Jaunty packages, and I can reproduce the error and also can
use the setting of SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 to temporarily bypass it...

[Bug 368335] [NEW] gdb tab-complete doesn't work

2009-04-27 Thread Johnathon Mlady
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdb

At the prompt, I type in:
gdb TAB
and get the following:
[21:35:02 dvz] $ gdb find: cannot search `': No such file or directory
find: `/usr/scripts': No such file or directory

The TAB seems to automatically execute instead of populate options.
TABcompletion works no problem with other tools/commands.

I don't know if this is my issue or gdb, or if anyone else has had this.

[Bug 289261] Re: Asus M50VM-DVD doesn't mount and can not be ejected

2009-02-23 Thread Johnathon
Ok, Confirming bug.

Can you try this?
* On power on, press 'Escape' to get the Grub boot menu
* Add the following kernel command line parameters at the end

break=top, modprobe ide_generic all_generic_ide=1

* To do this press e to edit then go down to kernel and press e
again. When done adding press ESC to go back and then b to boot with
this option.

Let me know if that helps or not.
