Still trying to solve the problem. It seems that kernel modesetting is no longer a practical solution. There is any chance to persuade Canonical to publish a kernel update and a intel driver that doesn't have KMS enabled on it? I would try to compile the kernel and the video driver by myself, but

The brightness hotkeys are dead. The command is at the last line of my rc.local file (without sudo), maybe it is a problem, because when the laptop enters to sleep mode, the backlight goes off again. I'll try your solution, my graphics card is from intel, it seems to solve this issue, thanks a

Public bug reported: This version of the kernel seems to have a regression regarding the backlight setting for the lcd (by default the screen is completely black). This was fixed manually using setpci. I know it's a kernel problem, but at this point a lot of new users are ranting on canonical.
