[Bug 867455] [NEW] sometimes application menu appears behind open windows

2011-10-04 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Sometimes the application menu will appear behind open windows. For
instance if i want to find an app, i click the windows key (hehe)
however if i have Firefox open, it will open the Application Window
behind Firefox, and I can't see the app menu. I believe this is a bug
because it does not happen all the time. Sometimes it works right, and
will appear on top of whatever is open.

[Bug 573371] [NEW] U1MS handles pre-ordered music inelegantly

2010-05-01 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store

I pre-ordered Airship's new EP - Algebra - which is due to be released
on May 10th. The tracks have appeared in My Downloads with an There was
a problem completing the download error message. There isn't an
problem, though - the reason the tracks aren't downloading is because
they haven't yet been released; it's expected behaviour. I presume that
if I try downloading again on May 10th, they'll download successfully.

At the very least, shouldn't the message reflect this? Something like
These tracks weren't yet available to download. You can try downloading
them again after the release date. seems friendlier. If it was possible
to include the release date in the message or, even better, have Ubuntu
One download them automatically download them on the release date, this
would be great.

Re: [Bug 492867]

2009-12-14 Thread Josh Smith
Brian,
Thank you for the feedback. I'll go through the steps you recommended
of forwarding the bug to the debain bug tracker. as well as adding a
bug watch. I realize the patch wasn't much and it probably wasn't the
most proper way to submit it (including the whole file instead of just
the diff for a 1 line change) but it's my first real contribution
back to ubuntu and I really wasn't sure how to properly create the
diff and etc.

Thank you,

[Bug 496810] [NEW] Units package requires rebuilding to get trigger support

2009-12-14 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

units, I saw the following output:

Processing triggers for man-db ...
Processing triggers for install-info ...
Setting up units (1.87-1) ...
Ignoring install-info called from maintainer script
The package units should be rebuild with new debhelper to get trigger support

I'm not sure whether or not this is important, but (to my inexperienced
eyes) it looks like units needs rebuilding with debhelper.

2009-10-18 Thread Josh Smith
Hi Steve,

I'm not sure this is a policy problem.

It's probably my fault for not explaining clearly; the problem isn't
that the screen doesn't dim, it's that it _can't_ dim. Ubuntu has
completely lost the ability to dim my netbook's screen, which is now
stuck at maximum brightness.

[Bug 410999] [NEW] Do you want to overwrite... dialogue box lacks yes/no to all and cancel buttons

2009-08-09 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If a user drags and drops songs from their Music Library to a device on
which the songs are already stored, a dialogue box asks them whether the
songs on the device should be overwritten (screenshot attached).

Because the box doesn't have yes/no to all buttons or an option to
cancel, if a user accidentally drags a large number of songs to their
device that are already on there, they face a time consuming and
repetitive task of having then click yes/no on each dialogue box, one-
by-one.

Could I suggest adding yes/no to all buttons, along with a cancel
button, to this box?

[Bug 330766] Re: pulseaudio hangs, prevents login, home as ntfs

2009-03-07 Thread Josh Smith
The problem for potentially several people is that incorrect .pulse
permissions can screw up pulseaudio working. And more importantly, the
failure of pulseaudio starting means the entire desktop never gets to
load up. However this can be fixed by a one off deleting of the .pulse
directory, so when it respawns it has the correct permissions.

The problem for me especially (the OP) is that pulseaudio needs to put
special permissions on the folder in the first place. This means that
when using an ntfs drive for the home directory, or something similar,
there is no chance for pulseaudio to change the permissions, as the
drive doesnt support them. This turns this into a design error in
pulseaudio rather than just a small upgrade type bug.

I should stress the other issue, why does pulseaudio hanging hold up the
entire of gnome?

[Bug 330766] Re: pulseaudio hangs, prevents login, home as ntfs

2009-03-07 Thread Josh Smith
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 189060 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189060

This is not a duplicate of bug #189060.
That bug is about permissions being wrong after an upgrade.

This bug is about:
1) incorrrect permissions causing all of gnome to wait
2) pulseaudio folder needing special permissions in the first place, which make
it incompatible with using the ntfs partition as the home folder

[Bug 330766] [NEW] pulseaudio hangs, prevents login, home as ntfs

2009-02-17 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I have my home directory on an ntfs drive. fstab line for the ntfs drive is
UUID=DA103AC5103AA901 /windowsntfs
defaults,umask=022,uid=1001,gid=1001 0 1

Log in as user 1001

Login screen disappears, goes to ubuntu brown background, and just waits. Can
still move mouse, but no visual progress on screen (waited several times more
than one minute). Then run
$ killall pulseaudio
from tty or from ssh from another computer, and then gnome loads, the panel
appears, and everything (except for pulseaudio) works fine

Note that uninstalling pulseaudio (and everything related) lets me log in fine
Note that having my home directory on an ext3 drive works fine (sound works
properly from pulseaudio too).
I also used an empty home folder for testing.

This kind of setup previously worked. On ubuntu hardy and intrepid,
pulseaudio performed fine on a home directory on an ntfs drive. Does not
work on jaunty

The .xsessions-errors give the following information about pulseaudio
I: caps.c: Limited capabilities successfully to CAP_SYS_NICE.

You set this in systempreferencessoundsound capturePulseAudio Sound

[Bug 178895] Re: Audacity does not mesh with PulseAudio

2008-12-10 Thread Josh Smith
David Henningsson, your PPA works very well for me. The alsa: pulse
option is there, and selecting it means input and output successfully
goes through pulseaudio, ie appear as streams in the pulseaudio tools.

I didnt experience any stuttering, with buffer at 100 milliseconds, and
latency correction at 0. And of course, better to at least have the
option to go through pulse than not.

Thanks

[Bug 269939] [NEW] padsp should only route sound through pulseaudio if it is running

2008-09-13 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

currently the padsp program has:

if [ x$LD_PRELOAD = x ] ; then
   LD_PRELOAD=libpulsedsp.so
else
   LD_PRELOAD=$LD_PRELOAD libpulsedsp.so
fi
export LD_PRELOAD
exec $@

it should really do:
if ps ax | grep -v grep | grep pulseaudio /dev/null; then
if [ x$LD_PRELOAD = x ] ; then
   LD_PRELOAD=libpulsedsp.so
else
   LD_PRELOAD=$LD_PRELOAD libpulsedsp.so
fi
fi
export LD_PRELOAD
exec $@

or with whatever test you want to use to see if pulse is running. This
means applications can then actually have padsp in the exec line of
.desktop files, and will work with pulse running, and without. the
variations of ubuntu would all have to make sure that the padsp file is
always available (ie always install pulseaudio-utils)

Alternatively, you could make another script not part of the pulseaudio
package which optionally runs padsp if and only if pulseaudio is
running. ie a script called padsp1, run as padsp1 application and
containing:

if ps ax | grep -v grep | grep pulseaudio /dev/null; then
exec padsp $@
else
exec $@
fi

[Bug 269149] [NEW] [ppa 0.9.12] pulse doesnt create ~/.pulse directory when making symlink

2008-09-11 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Required steps:
Make a new user account. log in to it (or you could just delete the current
~/.pulse directory). Totem cant play sound.
Running pulseaudio in terminal gives:
$ pulseaudio
..

E: core-util.c: Failed to symlink

If you create the directory ~/.pulse, pulseaudio can sucessfully create
the symlink inside it, and then start. Without the directory already
existing it fails to start

[Bug 261541] Re: Empathy doesn't connect/reconnect immediately if network becomes available

2008-08-27 Thread Josh Smith
Son, what version are you using?

on intrepid version 2.23.90 :
if you are logged into empathy, and then disconnect from the internet, and
reconnect (such as by dechecking enable wireless in netowrk manager, waiting
and rechecking, ...or by reselecting the same network, causing a reconnect)
empathy goes offline and then automatically (and within 3 seconds) signs back
in again.

a case where something could go wrong is mentioned in this bug:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=539142
where you start empathy before network manager, which means empathy is
(currently) unable to detect the change to online. Is this the case you are
observing, or does the problem come with a normal disconnect/reconnect?

anyway, using 2.23.90 in intrepid. i am currently able to change my
gtalk avatar and see it has updated from another account. Nicolas
DERIVE, any chance of you trying out the intrepid version, and see if
you are still affected by this bug?

on 2.23.90 i am also able to change my display name and have it updated on my
contact list. It is not updated on other users contact list, but i think what
it does IS the expected functionality. Google gives the initial name of your
contact by whatever you set in gmail, and when you change your name in empathy,
that is just renaming your contact, giving it a local alias. Other users can
choose whatever name they want for your contact, so changing your name shouldnt
change the name for you on there contact list.
Can we say this bit is fixed too?

[Bug 198453] Re: Default ALSA device must use PulseAudio, otherwise ALSA applications may fail

2008-08-13 Thread Josh Smith
so for intrepid. do we want:

/etc/asound.conf containing:
pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}

and run
asoundconf set-pulseaudio
which sets ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf to
pcm.!default {
type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

the first one allows access to the pulse device. the second sets it as
default per user, but changeable without having to jump up to superuser.
With this gdm sound still works as it is not using the pulse device that
isnt there. but regular sound works correctly once logged in

surely there should be no delay on doing the first of these actions as
it doesnt cause any problems. it adds an extra device, which can be
selected, but isnt used by default. the second can be considered later.
If the first is done, it at least allows non superusers to choose and
use the device

[Bug 256979] [NEW] teeworlds needs padsp in .desktop file for pulseaudio

2008-08-11 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: teeworlds

Teeworlds chooses OSS (ie /dev/dsp) by defualt for sound output. To make this
go through pulseaudio, ie for teeworlds to make any sound whilst any other
sound application is running, the .desktop file should change the Exec line to:
Exec=padsp teeworlds

Teeworlds cant use ALSA due to a limitation in portaudio's ability to
work with pulseaudio. Therefore OSS is the correct choice. If teeworlds
chooses the ALSA device, it still doesnt hurt for it to have padsp
before it.

Note that for me sound is slightly distorted when using padsp compared
to using just OSS sound straight (which only works when no other
application is running). However, having any applications not going
through pulseaudio produces major confusion headaches for users, as it
can have what seems like very odd other affects on unrelated
appplications which wont work as expected. It is safer to have the sound
going through pulseaudio, even if it is slightly lower quality.

After testing messing with the values in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf ; it appears
that adding the lines:
default-fragments = 8
default-fragment-size-msec = 5
fixes the sound problems i had in teeworlds. note that ; in the config file
means that line is commented out. This change to the daemon.conf file is
suggested in several places on the internet.

for now, teeworlds should definitely have padsp. work on the default
values for puleaudio daemon can come later

[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2008-08-11 Thread Josh Smith
please people, read the original posters comment before posting about
random other applications not working with pulseaudio. that has
absolutely nothing to do with the original bug report, which is only
about sound not working after resume.

for reference, the best test case for seeing is this bug exist is to try
playing sound in totem or rhythmbox while no other applications are
playing. everybody is getting confused because other appliations have
completely seperate problems (AT ALL TIMES)

DO NOT report any problems in this bug report if you have problems with any
other the following applications:
skype, flash (and therefore firefox in general), aplay, sdl applications (such
as neverwinter nights), kde applications, kde4 applications.
instead find the relevant bug reports for each of those applications
do not post any errors talking about not being able to open slave, as this is a
seperate issue

DO test this with
totem

look here: http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup
look at this thread i made. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=756290. to
diagnose problems you need to install and run pavucontrol. applications that
dont appear in pavucontrol are not the scope of this bug (although they may
need seperate fixes and/or bug reports filed against them). applications that
do appear in pavucontrol are relevant for this bug report

ideally all applications should appear in pavucontrol. this is what
ubuntu is working towards

sound is not going through pulseaudio

Basically this means, by default, if any other application is using the
sound card while you are running the test, you wont be able to hear the

[Bug 175689] Re: Share Folder in right-click menu does not share ntfs drive folders

2008-08-06 Thread Josh Smith
this bug report is confusing several issues into one, and the initial
poster mixed up uid and umask in a confusing way.

to summarise:
1)have uid of your user means you can share the folder without having to edit
/etc/samba/smb.conf (or you could just share it running nautilus in root ie
gksu nautilus).
2)having umask of 000 means computers on the network can actually access the
share (the dialog about automatically changing permissions does not work as
ntfs/vfat doesnt support individual file permissions, so if it wants to change
permissions it has got to edit /etc/fstab which it doesnt know how to do).

i made a new bug report bug #255391, which pulls out one of the issues
(the umask one) which at least endolith seems to be suffering from. this
might be more useful

[Bug 255391] [NEW] nautilus-share shared ntfs/vfat folders cant be read over samba as ntfs/vfat fstab is umask=007

2008-08-06 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-share

by default ntfs drives are in /etc/fstab with umask=007

this gives no read, no write, no execute permission to others

this means LAN computers trying to access files off your computer
through samba cant read them, because they dont have permission

the folder gets shared (ignoring the couple of problems, ie you have to
log out/in, and you have to add usershare owner only = False to the
global section of smb.conf, or run nautilus with gksu) but then the
files cant be read by another computer

solution: by default, ntfs drives entries in /etc/fstab should have
umask=000. they are shared drives with no concept of permissions. they
should be completely open by default. samba itself can then control what
specific permissions LAN computers have on the files on these drives

[Bug 214420] Re: nautilus-share can't share ntfs/fat32 folders

2008-08-06 Thread Josh Smith
patrice vetsel and rocko:
the problems here are twofold

when nautilus says it needs to alter the permissions of the folder, this is not
about altering the owner of the folder, but giving the group others
read, write, execute permissions. the folder needs to have those permissions so
that it can be read over the network.
now on reason why it cant alter the permissions of the folders because you are
not the owner, but this is a different stage to sharing it.
it is also true that if you are not the owner you are not allowed to share the
folder (unless you edit smb.conf of start nautilus as root)

note also that even if you were the owner, you couldnt change the
permissions, because ntfs/vfat dont support individual file permissions.
to change the permissions it needs to edit the fstab entry for the
drive. the actual fact of you owning the drive is irrelevant therefore
in this case to whether you can change the permissions, as it is
superseded by the fstab thing.

i made bug #255391 about the ntfs drive not having the right permissions
by default that it needs to be able to be read across the network. once
that is changed it will just be the case of the owner problem. then all
users need to do is make the edit to smb.conf as suggested in the gui
(or run gksu nautilus)

[Bug 255391] Re: nautilus-share shared ntfs/vfat folders cant be read over samba as ntfs/vfat fstab is umask=007

2008-08-06 Thread Josh Smith
note that the dialog like the one shown in this attachment cant hope to
actually change the permissions as the permissions are control by the
/etc/fstab file as whole drive permissions as this is ntfs/vfat

the permissions should be correct by defualt. this means they should be
umask=000

[Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive

2008-08-06 Thread Josh Smith
Until nautilus can in some other way distinguish between which files
could want to be executed.

surely the sane default for ubuntu to use would be to view executable text
files when they are opened instead of ask each time
this will then be the default for all folders (even if not vfat/ntfs)

It should be the default as this is what noobish people would expect,
who are also the people likely to still be using ntfs/vfat drives and
therefore who are going to be prompted by this dialogue more. And as the
experienced users are more likely to know how to change the setting to
ask each time if that is what they want, and are more likely to keep
their home directory where this setting would be saved, and are more
likely to be using the terminal to execute these files anyway

lets not annoy the non-technical users

[Bug 246130] [NEW] nautilus says out of space on multiple files copy. but may actually want to skip/replace some files

2008-07-06 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Example
Disk has 100 mb of space left. current folder has file called A of size 200mb.
Want to copy into that directory a file A of size 200mb and a file called B of
10mb. (so enough space for B and A to exist on the disk)

Outcome:
See error message:
Error while copying to folder
There is not enough space on the destination. Try to remove files to make space.
Show more details
There is 100 MB available, but 210 MB is required.
Cancel Retry

Expected Outcome
See error message:
Error while copying to folder
There is not enough space on the destination. Try to remove files to make space
or chose individual files to copy.
Show more details
There is 100 MB available, but 210 MB is required.
Cancel | Retry | Ignore warning; copy files individually

Then dialog should appear like when you copy multiple files if you are
are not running out of disk space, ie replace/skip options

Then you would have the option to skip or replace file A when that file is
copied, and to put file B in. ANd with disk space to spare
Obviously in this case i could have done it individually by inspection, but
when there are multiple levels of folder all containing different files, and
you want to copy a new folder over the top, skipping each of the files already
there, it becomes very difficult. Or you would have to delete the folder on the
destination and copy from scratch (which would be slow, and in some cases still
not what you wanted, if you had different version of the files in both places)

Basically when there is an error on copying multiple files because of
disk space, it should go through them one by one. It should just try to
copy (after clicking ignore) instead of blocking you with an error
message that is unneeded

[Bug 246134] [NEW] ubiquity crashes if folder for home directory is symlink

2008-07-06 Thread Josh Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

a partition has folder B. and folder A being a symlink to B
if you mount the partition in the live cd nautilus (by clicking on it in the
left panel in nautilus) the symlink works correctly; going into A goes into B

start ubiquity
select to have the partition mounted as home in ubquity
choose user name A
installation fails, installer crashes without error message when it says
setting up home directory below progress bar

start ubiquity again
select to have the partition mounted as home in ubquity
choose user name B
installation works successfully ( and I get my old home directory back :) )
Then start up newly installed ubuntu. In systemadminusers and groups. can
change home directory location from B to A, no problems. So there is no actual
problem with having the home folder as a symlink once installed

Clearly there should be no difference between the folders. Whatever the
installer needs to do with the folder A it should be able to do it as if
it was B

This was using the ubuntu 8.04 live cd.
I'm sorry but i dont have any error logs, and also i dont really want to
reinstall ubuntu to get them. But i tried the installer several times and it
crashed every time until i changed my username from A to B, when i thought it
might have been having trouble with the symlink. So this might not be a very
useful bug report, but i thought i should report it anyway. It may also be
something specific to my home folder, as I have had it for a year now, but as
it doesnt cause a problem changing it once installed, i dont think it should be
a problem for ubiquity

[Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio

2008-06-14 Thread Josh Smith
more info:

mpd needs the following in /etc/mpd.conf otherwise i cant get anything
to happen, so this should surely be added by default:

audio_output {
typepulse
nameMy pulse output
}

then (without having done the load-module module-native-protocol-tcp
auth-anonymous=1 or the equivalent paprefs fix):
running mpd as user mpd, mpd doesnt work, mpd skips straight through the
playlist without appearing in pavucontrol, and without playing any sound
producing errors:
Jun 14 10:29 : Cannot connect to server in PulseAudio output my pulse output
(attempt 1): Connection refused
Jun 14 10:29 : problems opening audio device while playing Bloody Tourists/03
- Take These Chains.mp3
in the errors.log file
running mpd as the current user, mpd works, mpd stream appears in pavucontrol
mixes properly with other applications
running mpd as root, mpd works, mpd stream appears in pavucontrol, mixes
properly with other applications

then now doing the fix load-module module-native-protocol-tcp
auth-anonymous=1 or the equivalent paprefs
running mpd as user mpd works, mpd stream appears in pavucontrol, mixes
properly with other applications
the others still work.

so root and the current user have some permission that the user mpd doesnt, and
this permission should be added to the user mpd (i think)
note: running mpd as root is not advised

anyone confirm my findings? i dont know enough about manipulating groups
to do much more...

[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition

2008-05-07 Thread Josh Smith
thanks for the hint rocko, and thanks for the read sebastian bacher.
i know that we cant go around making the ntfs drive owned by the user, but
changing the fstab line to something like:
/dev/sda2 /c ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1
gives some useful results at least:
files are deleted with a single delete key, and appear in trash:// but havent
been copied on to the other partition, but are rather stored in the folder
.Trash-1000. (if the fstab line is changed back, files in .Trash-1000 do not
appear in trash://), so it is all technologically possible

Security concerns dont really exist with trash folders on shared drives:
If you delete a file that was public on an ntfs drive, you expect it to go to
your trash, and will expect it to still be public, and if you really want to
get rid of it you will know you have to empty your trash. The problem set up in
gutsy was where file were deleted and then vanished from the gui, but still
existed on the hard drive, ie security worry as people thought it was gone, but
it wasnt. As the files are now in the gui there is no problem any more. This is
the expected behaviour.

If another user puts a file in your recycle bin maliciously, this can
hardly be called a security concern either. The idea of potentially a
malicious file appearing in your trash and you opening it is not really
something to worry about. The exact same thing could happen in the drive
itself, ie a user puts a malicious file in your reservered (ie by social
convention) folder on the ntfs drive, and you wonder where it is from
and open it. the fact that it is now the trash folder as well adds
nothing.

if each user has a seperate .trash-{user} folder on the ntfs drives, the above
concerns only exist if another user on the system goes out of their way to
either read someone elses trashed files, or to put a file into someone elses
trash folder. But as there is no concept of any security on this drive, this is
already the case: a user can go out of their way read someone else's files, or
to put something into someone else's reserved (ie by social convention) folder.
by putting an ntfs drive into your computer the users and admin have to accept
that there is a potential security hole through this drive, and are relying on
trust for your users, the trash is no different

all the technology is there now. the only worry is security concerns,
but they are really moot. We cant help people who have ntfs drives, they
know that security is weaker. They must accept that any files stored on
that partition are going to be public untill they are completely removed
(but now are not put under the false impression that they are gone), and
also that any other user is free to put any file onto that drive, which
you might bump into by accident.

i suggest using .trash-{user}, and having the contents of that folder
appear in the relevant user trash:// folder. if the admin cares about
security of files it will be obvious that no files should ever be stored
on the ntfs drive (or get rid of the drive), if the admin lets the users
store file on this drive, then it is clear that the admin is relying on
trust between the users when dealing with files on this drive, so the
trash system i just described is appropriate, and isnt any more
vulnerable to attack or security comprimise.

[Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio

2008-05-07 Thread Josh Smith
i should mention that:
installing paprefs and selecting enable network access to local sound devices
and don't require authentication is the user specific equivalent to:
load-module module-native-protocol-tcp auth-anonymous=1
which is system wide
The user specific solution is probably a much better solution for users as it
means you dont have to edit system config files

but the bug seems to really be with mpd. perhaps selecting a different
output like esd is best at the moment.
