[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-03-23 Thread Julie Brandon
Hate to be another +1 but, any updates on this. This is quite a major
issue for real world use right now.

[Bug 1300892] Re: Slow focus switching in Compiz - affects Unity Dash UX

2017-06-23 Thread Julie Brandon
Seeing the same thing on 16.04.2 32bit with i5-4460 8Gb and a GTX 960.

Present with all NVidia proprietary drivers (up to 381.13), not present
with nouveau driver (but that has other issues.)

Restarting unity with "unity --replace" on the command line usually
makes it go (may sometimes take a couple of tries.)

NVidia GPUs are extremely common and the Nouveau driver is terribly
buggy and crash prone, if this is genuinely a unity bug then I don't
think it's reasonable to triage this as low as it makes the desktop
essential unusable for work purposes and I suspect an awful lot more
people are experiencing this bug than realise it's cause. (It took me
far too long to find this bug report myself and I've been battling with
this for months.)

[Bug 1607535] Re: ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4+nmu1ubuntu2 fails to install core fonts and should be updated to version 3.6 from Debian

2016-11-25 Thread Julie Brandon
Unfortunately the sourceforge links this relies on are now EXCEPTIONALLY
unreliable and have been for the last few weeks - for me and I'm sure
most everyone else most download attempts fail considerably more often
than they succeed now (and this is on a well behaved, rock solid, fibre
connection.)

Given that 10 or so successful downloads are required for this installer
to complete, and most times individual downloads fail, and any
individual download failing causes the process to fail, successful
installation is now essentially impossible for me and many others - mine
and others' systems have been stuck on the repeated "Failure to download
extra files" dialogs for a while now.

:(

Given that it makes this package currently uninstallable and the
considerable heat this is receiving, I'm struggling to see how this can
be regarded as only medium priority now.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-10-30 Thread Julie Brandon
Seeing the same problem since upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04.

The vm.dirty workarounds and disabling swap don't make a difference.

Once this problem kicks in ALL disk writes become stupidly slow (2MB/s)
until next reboot on both SSD and spinning HDD.

i5-4460/16Gb RAM/ASUS Z97-K

This is an enormous problem not to have at least been assigned to
someone!

[Bug 554471] Re: I can't remove a bluetooth device with bluetooth-properties

2015-05-16 Thread Julie Brandon
Given that;

  - the problem appears to be at a pretty low-level,

  - the only known method of circumvention appears to be to reset the
state information held in /var/lib/bluetooth, which is used by the bluez
bluetoothd daemon,

  - that bluetoothd is owned by the bluez package, and

  - even the bluez utilities and tools can't remove these corrupted
states,

it looks a lot like this is actually a fairly low-level bug with either
bluez or the associated utilities, so I'm including the blues package in
this bug report.

[Bug 554471] Re: I can't remove a bluetooth device with bluetooth-properties

2015-05-16 Thread Julie Brandon
Hi folks, especially Jeff Lane

I managed to connect a bluetooth mouse up using the unity applet (gnome-
bluetooth), and then somehow managed to mess it up in a way similar to
the way you folks have - it didn't appear in the bluetooth devices list,
yet when I turned it on the lock appeared on the bluetooth icon and it
appeared in the applet list... but no connection button and didn't
appear in the devices list.

This was a relatively new install of Ubuntu 14.04-2 LTS 64bit but I
didn't want to just reinstall, so I tried a few different solutions
listed (including a few command line commands and blueman) to try to
delete the device, all giving the same error as the original poster.

So I gave up and did a locate blue | less and had a look to see where
bluetooth state information was and to see if I couldn't erase it and
start afresh.

I came across the directory /var/lib/bluetooth/ that appears to hold
entries for such devices, including the half-installed-half-broken
device - I turned bluetooth off, deleted everything in this directory,
rebooted and then could finally get the mouse to repair again! :D

This can't be considered tooo radical, because you can delete these
entries in that directory as a normal user.

You can probably just get away with deleting the directory associated
with the MAC of the device that is causing the problems, if you don't
want to lose all your pairings.

Hope that this method of circumvention helps some others here too?

It's certainly a bug and a nasty one that can appear quickly after a
verbatim fresh install of 14.04-2 LTS too.

[Bug 1319963] Re: xrdp only showing bare X11 background, installed lightdm ignored

2014-11-12 Thread Julie Brandon
Hi folks

Looks like https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xrdp/+bug/1326273 ,
which is more detailed, is actually a duplicate of this bug - so I've
taken the liberty of marking the other one as such.

The same thing happens on 14.10 running 0.6.1-1 and makes the xrdp
service pretty much unusable, so this really needs to be addressed
sooner rather than later. :(

Anything I, or anyone else, can do to help (e.g. more diagnostics?)
Wish I could still code! :(

[Bug 1384981] Re: system-settings transparent

2014-10-31 Thread Julie Brandon
I had this issue, but also noticed a few other bugs (like doubled up
Printer icons, old icons that shouldn't be there any more, missing icons
and some settings failing such as the screen settings) - I fixed it
simply through an apt-get install ubuntu-desktop (although I imagine
just doing the system settings app would probably have worked too.)

I strongly suspect it's a side effect of going from 14.04 to 14.10 as
the distribution upgrade app broke near the end on all machines I did
the upgrade on and the process had to be manually fixed on all machines
I did such an upgrade on (that taught me a lesson!)

Did you guys also have a similar almost-a-show-stopper distribution
upgrade bug, by any chance?

(SO sorry I'm sparse on details - if it becomes relevant I can do some
research and backtrack and locate the bug .)

[Bug 1029289] Re: Need to authorize my google account each time I boot the computer

2014-08-09 Thread Julie Brandon
A me too here (having to login after every boot), but I should note that
it's happening on both accounts on this computer - my login with my
google account and the same with my partners' login and her account.
We're both personal Google account users; that it's a system wide issue
suggests it's not /home/* configuration file specific.

[Bug 1181884] Re: Canon MG6200 printer driver has incorrect default color model

2014-02-13 Thread Julie Brandon
Here's another example - photo taken as carefully as I could (with
proper white balance) - on the right is the original image, top left a
CMYK version printed and below an RGB version printed.

What is most revealing, I think, is the white to black gradient on the
bottom left of each image. Although the CMYK model doesn't have as high
contrast, it is at least a pretty accurate ramp, whereas with the RGB
model something clearly goes very wrong a quarter of the way into the
black end.

This really needs to be addressed - it looks like it probably effects an
awful lot of people!
