[Bug 1836859] Re: RFE: Ship the firmware "descriptor files" as part of the 'ovmf' package
Yeah, I gave a heads up to 'dannf' on #debian-qemu on OFTC as well :-) No, I haven't filed for other BIOSes. (But, reading the QEMU firmware spec[1], it the other BIOSes are possible, too.) My immediate motivation to file these for EDK2/OVMF is to facilitate the Secure Boot feature KVM/QEMU guests for OpenStack Nova[2], which is slated for the upcoming "Train" release. The JSON files are used by the libvirt API (which is used by Nova) to allow auto-selecting the correct firmware binary. [Bug 1836859] Re: RFE: Ship the firmware "descriptor files" as part of the 'ovmf' package
** Description changed: From version 4.1 (due in August 2019) onwards, QEMU ships the so-called firmware "descriptor files". These are small JSON files that describe details about UEFI firmware binaries — such as the fimware binary path, its architecture, supported machine type, NVRAM template and so forth. You can see examples of these files in the upstream QEMU Git: https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=tree;f=pc-bios/descriptors - $> tree descriptors/ - descriptors/ - ├── 50-edk2-i386-secure.json - ├── 50-edk2-x86_64-secure.json - ├── 60-edk2-aarch64.json - ├── 60-edk2-arm.json - ├── 60-edk2-i386.json - └── 60-edk2-x86_64.json - + $> tree descriptors/ + descriptors/ + ├── 50-edk2-i386-secure.json + ├── 50-edk2-x86_64-secure.json + ├── 60-edk2-aarch64.json + ├── 60-edk2-arm.json + ├── 60-edk2-i386.json + └── 60-edk2-x86_64.json + QEMU 4.1 itself will ship the above files. However, Ubuntu's `ovmf` package needs to ship modified versions of these JSON files that correspond to the OVMF biararies shipped in Debian. [Bug 1643911] Re: libvirt randomly crashes on xenial nodes with "*** Error in `/usr/sbin/libvirtd': malloc(): memory corruption:"
Now, we seem to be stuck in a limbo here, unable to diagnose this to get to the root cause. So I asked upstream libvirt maintainers on IRC. And Dan Berrange responds [text formatted a little bit for readability here]: "Running libvirt under Valgrind will likely point to a root cause. However, it's impossible to run libvirtd under Valgrind in the openstack CI system, unless you're happy to have many hours longer running time and massively more RAM used. "The only way to debug it is to deploy custom libvirtd builds. Meaning: whatever extra debugging info is needed in the area of code that is suspected to be broken; there's no right answer here - you just have to experiment repeatedly until you find what you need. And deploy this custom build either by providing new packages in the the repos, or by using a hack [via 'rootwrap' facility] to install custom libvirtd in the Nova startup code. "Also, a core dump in this scenario will not be helpful. With memory corruption, a core dump is rarely useful, because the actual problem you care about will have occurred some time before the crash happens. This is especially true for multithreaded applications like libvirtd. Because the thread showing the abrt/segv is quite often not the thread which caused the corruption." -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1643911 Title: libvirt randomly crashes on xenial nodes with "*** Error in `/usr/sbin/libvirtd': malloc(): memory corruption:" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/libvirt/+bug/1643911/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1449062] Re: qemu-img calls need to be restricted by ulimit (CVE-2015-5162)
Jeremy: Hemanth (in comment#72) seems to have mixed up this bug (which sets limits for memory / CPU usage for `qemu-img` calls) with *another* bug[x] that is about disk image format guessing. [Bug 1475166] Re: Ubuntu 15.04 Install Error with Avago Controller
@ Bryan - 1. This is an issue with Avago Driver. Driver code snippet - instance->max_sectors_per_req = instance->max_num_sge * PAGE_SIZE / 512; if (tmp_sectors && (instance->max_sectors_per_req > tmp_sectors)) instance->max_sectors_per_req = tmp_sectors; Current Driver count max_sectors based on PAGE_SIZE. This is wrong. We will fix and send patch to upstream. On OPAL setup, PAGE_SIZE is 64K, so we will send max_sectors to OS = 8192. This is higher than FW expect. FW is just 1M capable. Now kernel has some check at block layer to pick min of two values. One Driver provided and other BLK defaults. Ubuntu 14.x kernel might be bringing down value of max_hw_sectors_kb to 1024, but 15.4 kernel keep max_hw_sectors_kb to 4096. Driver fix is required and root cause is PAGE_SIZE is more than 4K. Driver will break the moment PAGE_SIZE is more than 4K w.r.t max_sectors value. Using max_sectors module parameter of driver, you can reduce the value but can not increase that value. It can solve this problem. So if you/customer is looking for quick resolution use max_sectors module parameter of megasraid_sas driver. Add below entry in grub megaraid_sas.max_sectors=512 Thanks, Kashyap -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1475166 Title: Ubuntu 15.04 Install Error with Avago Controller To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1475166/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1475166] Re: Ubuntu 15.04 Install Error with Avago Controller
@ Brayn - Sorry for my earlier comment about 256K IO size. I thought customer is using released FW packages. I just realize that FW version 24.10.0-0002 is Internal development release and not a product GCA. Our current development series has 1024K support. Looks like there may be some bug in FW which is not working well under 1024K support, but certainly it is not 4096K. Anything higher than 1024K will break here and "FW status 0x3" print will be a trigger for that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1475166 Title: Ubuntu 15.04 Install Error with Avago Controller To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1475166/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1475166] Re: Ubuntu 15.04 Install Error with Avago Controller
@ Bryan - I see what you say... It is bit confusing...you are confuse with max_sectors module parameter. That parameter is only for bit old controllers. See below PnP ID checks in driver code. /* * Check if the module parameter value for max_sectors can be used */ if (max_sectors && max_sectors < instance->max_sectors_per_req) instance->max_sectors_per_req = max_sectors; else { if (max_sectors) { if (((instance->pdev->device == PCI_DEVICE_ID_LSI_SAS1078GEN2) || (instance->pdev->device == PCI_DEVICE_ID_LSI_SAS0079GEN2)) && (max_sectors <= MEGASAS_MAX_SECTORS)) { instance->max_sectors_per_req = max_sectors; } else { dev_info(>pdev->dev, "max_sectors should be > 0" "and <= %d (or < 1MB for GEN2 controller)\n", instance->max_sectors_per_req); } } } I will be checking how non-PPC environment behaves using same FW component. (as per comment #13) 14.10 should work but 15.04 will fail. [Bug 1475166] Re: Ubuntu 15.04 Install Error with Avago Controller
Avago controller support 256K max IO. max_sector_hw_kb should be 256. Anything like 1024 or 4096 is invalid. [Bug 1439280] Re: Libvirt CPU affinity error
Yes, to test CPU pinning/NUMA with libvirt you ought to use Nested KVM. Please report results after testing with that. That said, some notes below. Quoting Dan Berrange from a different review with a complete response on *why*: It is fundamentally impossible to test CPU pinning with TCG (aka plain QEMU) because TCG only has a single thread for all virtual CPUs. As such there is no mechanism to pin vCPU threads with TCG. Nested KVM is thus the only possible option for testing any of the NUMA / CPU pinning stuff. Instructions for nested KVM setup on a KVM host are documented here http://docs.openstack.org/developer/nova/devref/testing/libvirt- numa.html#provisioning-a-virtual-machine-for-testing From my testing, a Nova guest booted with a NUMA flavor, will have the below contextual XML snippets w.r.t vCPU placement: . . . vcpu placement='static'4/vcpu cputune vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='0-3'/ vcpupin vcpu='1' cpuset='0-3'/ vcpupin vcpu='2' cpuset='0-3'/ vcpupin vcpu='3' cpuset='0-3'/ emulatorpin cpuset='0-3'/ /cputune numatune memory mode='strict' nodeset='0'/ memnode cellid='0' mode='strict' nodeset='0'/ /numatune . . . cpu topology sockets='4' cores='1' threads='1'/ numa cell id='0' cpus='0-3' memory='1048576' unit='KiB'/ /numa /cpu . . . Here's the working example XMLs from my testing.
Libvirt XML for the guest hypervisor (also called L1), running DevStack and will host Nova instances which are nested guests: https://kashyapc.fedorapeople.org/virt/openstack/nova-libvirt-numa- testing/devstack-vm-libvirt.xml And, Nova guest XML, booted with a NUMA flavor: https://kashyapc.fedorapeople.org/virt/openstack/nova-libvirt-numa- testing/nova-guest-libvirt.xml ** Changed in: nova (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nova in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1439280 Title: Libvirt CPU affinity error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nova/+bug/1439280/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
