[Bug 1828083] Re: run-mailcap script contains deprecated unsescaped left brace

2019-05-07 Thread Kat Cannon-MacMartin
I realized immediately after submission that this should instead be a
question, before being escalated to the status of "bug". Just curious
why 16.04 doesn't have this fix yet.

[Bug 1828083] [NEW] run-mailcap script contains deprecated unsescaped left brace

2019-05-07 Thread Kat Cannon-MacMartin
Public bug reported:

I am using 16.04 xenial, which the mime-support package 3.59.

The run-mailcap script in the mime-support package contains an unescaped
left brace in the regex statement on line 528.

To be exact, the line that currently reads:

$comm =~ s!%{(.*?)}!$_="'$ENV{$1}'";s/\`//g;s/\'\'//g;$_!ge;

should instead read:

$comm =~ s!%\{(.*?)}!$_="'$ENV{$1}'";s/\`//g;s/\'\'//g;$_!ge;

Because of this issue, run-mailcap displays a warning each time it runs
(although actual functionality is not inhibited)

I took a look at the latest edition of the package, 3.60, and this issue
is fixed in that version. Xenial, however, still uses 3.59. Is this fix
coming to Xenial any time soon?

 Status: Invalid

[Bug 1456345] Re: device not detecting

2015-06-27 Thread Kat F
Since the last Calibre Update, calibre no longer recognizes my Kindle Fire HDX
and when I connect thru a USB, calibre no longer syncs, updates my books or
even changes toolbars like it should. A real pain in the you know. I can't
get to the books I've downloaded onto my Kindle either. What do I do?
Is anyone working on this??

Please tell me what to do so I can fix this? I've even restored my
computer three times thinking something was wrong. But the USB ports DO
work. Just don't show my Kindle to Calibre. :(

2015-05-05 Thread Kat
3.16.0-37 is also not working for Lenovo E550.
Although I have not tried to apply the fixes listed above, since I am
relatively new to Linux and not skilled enough just yet.
I guess I will wait for the Ubuntu-3.16.0-38 kernel to get permanent fixes.

[Bug 1153860] Re: header doesn't match body

2014-10-06 Thread kat
Did you ever get resolution to this mismatched email? I use gmail and
all of a sudden when I move messages from my inbox to the trash box,
what ends up in trash has a header and from line that is not consistent
with what the body of my email says. I have iphone with ios7. And
nothing has changed in my phone. Very strange.

[Bug 1195077] [NEW] date and time displays Date format not supported

2013-06-26 Thread Kat Volk
Public bug reported:

I attempted to change the time display in the top menu bar of the unity
interface (ubuntu 13.04) by going to system settings, time date,
clock, and selecting the check boxes next to weekday and date and
month. This results in the menu bar displaying Date format not
supported instead of the date and time. Asking the system to display
anything other than the time in 12-hour or 24-hour format results in
this message being displayed instead

[Bug 886573] Re: Checkbox-gtk System Test destroyed SSD drive on suspend test

2011-11-27 Thread Kat Amsterdam
received my RMA drive. OCZ sent me a new drive in the box. Very good
service!

I reinstalled the laptop to the exact same configuration as before

fresh install Oneric 11.10
MS-DOS Partition Table
100GB btrfs partition mounted as /
5GB swap partition mounted as linux_swap

Updated the laptop with the latest updates from Update Manager

Test #1
sudo pm-suspend
Result:
Laptop went into Suspend mode with the power lamp flashing
Pushing the power button resumed the laptop to the state it was beforehand
showing the desktop and terminal normally.
OK

Test #2
sudo rtcwake -m mem -s 60
Result:
Laptop went to Suspend mode with the power lamp flashing
Power lamp continued to flash for 10 minutes
Intervened with the power button
Laptop came back to the desktop and the terminal with the message:
rtcwake: assuming the hardwareclock is in UTC
rtcwake: wakeup from mem using /dev/rtc0 at Sun Nov 27 16:39:46 2011

So the two tests from Post #9 were successful.

I will now do the same test with checkbox.

[Bug 812594] Re: HP USB Graphics Adapter (Displaylink) shows green screen

2011-11-19 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Warning the DisplayLink driver is dependent on reading the EDID
(Extended display identification data) from the Monitor. If the monitor
does not supply this, then (as in my case) everything you try will fail.

This a partial workaround works for a single display:

1. make sure the displaylink driver is installed

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-displaylink

2. Put the following into the file
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/52-displaylink.conf (please have a look at
the Notes below as well)

Section Device
Identifier DisplayLinkDevice
driver displaylink
Option fbdev /dev/fb0# or /dev/fb1 depending on the results of dmesg |
grep DisplayLink
EndSection

###
Section Monitor
Identifier DisplayLinkMonitor
EndSection

Section Screen
Identifier DisplayLinkScreen
Device DisplayLinkDevice
Monitor DisplayLinkMonitor
SubSection Display
Depth 16
Modes 1024x768
EndSubSection
EndSection

3. Add the following to /etc/gdm/Init/Default above the exit 0 at the
end of the file:

### set display for attached USB devices

XRANDR=`gdmwhich xrandr`
if [ x$XRANDR != x ] ; then
$XRANDR -o 0
fi

4. stop X

sudo stop gdm

5. Test out before restarting gdm:

sudo startx

At this point, you should see at least a mouse cursor that you can move
around, and possibly the Unity 2D fallback interface, in case you're
using Natty.

6. If the desktop apepars and is usable, you should be able to now start
gdm and have a login screen:

sudo start gdm

So hold this bug open until the RMA is complete. I have just started the
process and they have handed the issue over to the RMA department.

As for Data Loss, there was none, luckily. It was a fresh install of
Ubuntu on a disk that did not contain any important data.

[Bug 812594] Re: HP USB Graphics Adapter (Displaylink) shows green screen

2011-11-10 Thread Kat Amsterdam
I did upgrade to Oneric, and yes the issue still occurs with Oneric, I still
get the green screen when I plug it in, and tweaking of Xorg.conf is to no
avail.

This bug is also reported to Canonical Paid Support under my company
globeone
case: 00019304

I even went to the great lengths of sending a physical HP USB Display
Link adapter to the Canonical London office so they could have the
actual hardware to fix the bug with.

This, as the project that my company is working on is dependent on
getting a USB-VGA adapter working under Ubuntu.

You would think with paid support (2 licences, one for Lucid and one for
Natty) and actually sending the physical hardware Canonical/Ubuntu
Community could come up with something better than:

I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

I am starting to understand why Businesses use RedHat, SuSe or even
Microsoft.

[Bug 886573] Re: Checkbox-gtk System Test destroyed SSD drive on suspend test

2011-11-06 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Here are the answers to your questions

1- Whether the power light was pulsating when the system went to sleep.

===Yes, the power light was pulsating when the system went to sleep

2- Whether indeed, upon trying to wake up the system, it acted as if it
had just rebooted (showing the disk error as part of BIOS POST) or if
Ubuntu actually showed some sort of error and *then* you rebooted.

===The first time on resume, the laptop POSTed correctly, Ubuntu booted, but
without showing anything on the laptop screen. I could see the harddisk lamp
running like crazy for around 3 minutes. Since it wasn't continuing the boot I
shutdown the laptop again using the 4-second power button hold.
When I booted again, the BIOS showed no-disk

3- The other thing I forgot to mention that is important.

===I had a bios_grub labeld partition of 16mb, a BTRFS Primary partition
with two subvolumes @ and @home and one Linux Swap partition.

4. Drive age
=== the drive is only 4 months old, so really should not have any issues of the
type you described unless there was a manufacturing defect.

OCZ has agreed to RMA the drive so luckily the financial loss is kept to
a minimum.

Thank you for looking into this.

[Bug 886573] [NEW] Checkbox-gtk System Test destroyed SSD drive on suspend test

2011-11-05 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

On my HP TX-2-1050ed
with OCZ Vertex2 Sata II 2.5 SSD 120GB
 I did a
fresh install of Oneric 11.10
updated all packages
started checkbox-gtk (System Test)
When it did the Sleep and resume test where the laptop goes to sleep and you
have to resume using the power button
I got a nasty system error No Harddisk Found
When I went into the BIOS it also could no longer find the SSD.
So I put in a Kingston 120GB and started the machine just fine again.
I put the OCZ Vertex2 into a USB harddrive enclosure and inserted it into my HP
6730b and it came back with a
usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110
meaning the drive is dead
I plugged the drive into a WindowsXP box and it also reported the drive as
being dead.

I don't have the apt-cache policy pkgname data because that is on the
destroyed SSD and I don't dare try the same test again on my 6730b as
not to lose another €140 drive.

it's most likely the same as on my HP6730b

so to open x3270
you would do

alt+F2
x327
Mouse left-click x3270 from the lens (RSI anyone?)

[Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Plugging in external monitor to VGA port makes both displays corrupted with thick slanted lines

2011-10-14 Thread Kat Amsterdam
My second monitor showed a big white and blue stripe down the middle and
after a reboot a dithered screen with every other scan line blacked out.

The shocker of this incident is Wont Fix!!! Unbelievably unprofessional.
The screen is the most important as it's your interface with the
computer.

See attachment for what is happening.

[Bug 702451] Re: openoffice-calc tooltips are white on yellow when editing XLS file, making them unreadable

2011-09-15 Thread Kat Amsterdam
It would be nice if people, when changing the statuses of bugs, would
put a small description of why.

In this case openoffice.org has been set to Won't Fix because
1) Oracle will have to fix this bug upstream for OpenOffice
2) OpenOffice.org has been superceded in Ubuntu by LibreOffice. So hopefully it
will get fixed there.

[Bug 599957] Re: OpenOffice Calc file residing on a NAS hangs on splash screen when launching from Nautilus

Reasons for Won't Fix:

Ubuntu has moved from OpenOffice.org to LibreOffice
This bug does not exist in LibreOffice
Karmic is End Of Life

(I myself have moved already to Libre Office on all my machines so this
bug could just be closed as I am the reporter of the bug)

[Bug 833546] [NEW] iputils-arping conflicts with package arping because of same name

2011-08-25 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

I need to scan for an ip address based on MAC address and wanted to use
the utility arping.

Unfortunatly there are TWO different versions of the program with the
exact same name. arping has dependancies with network-manager network-
manager-gnome and ubuntu-desktop making the package arping impossible to
install as iputils-arping is default. And iputils-arping doesn't have
the option to use a MAC address to arp to receive the IP address.

This discussion (from 2005) sums it up in the end as well. (why does this issue
still exist?)
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-networking-3/how-to-find-ip-address-of-a-machine-if-i-know-their-mac-address-353239/

What procedure needs to be followed in order to get one of the
programmers to rename their program, or to repackage the ubuntu package
arping so that it creates /usr/bin/arpingmac or something similar
instead of the naming conflict?

[Bug 812594] Re: HP USB Graphics Adapter (Displaylink) shows green screen

2011-08-09 Thread Kat Amsterdam
This is true for all Display Link Devices under Ubuntu. Bought a Lilliput UM-70
(Displaylink) USB Monitor because I saw someone else in the community got it
working. The Liliput also showed a green screen when plugged in, instead of
the display, so the bug is larger than only the HP USB Graphics Adapter.
With some xorg.conf hacking I was able to get the Lilliput UM-70 started (GDM
shows up, but xorg (xinerama) crashes when the desktop loads).

[Bug 504224] Re: NFS mounts at boot time prevent boot or print spurious errors

2011-07-30 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Proof of this bug in a screenshot. I have had my ubuntu customer in a
panic now twice due to this matter. It happens when the machine has been
turned off for the night. The next day he starts the machine (the nas
runs 24/7 but goes into sleep mode), but the nas is still sleeping, so
it doesn't react right away to the request to mount. The system hangs
with the message in the screenshot.

[Bug 805087] Re: hidden unity launcher+dash after moving around multiple firefox windows

2011-07-22 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Does the problem exist for the original bug initiator after a reboot of the
system? My friend rebooted his system and is now no longer able to reproduce
this bug.

[Bug 812594] [NEW] HP USB Graphics Adapter (Displaylink) shows green screen

2011-07-18 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

I have a HP USB Graphics Adapter using the Displaylink technology Model NL571AA
When plugging in the adapter to Ubuntu Natty 11.04
The display link drivers are in the kernel and I loaded
xserver-xorg-video-displaylink
As the idea behind Ubuntu is plug it in and it 'just works', this bug. All the
pieces are there to have this 'just work' but it doesn't.

the kernel recognizes the device and reports it capabilities correctly:

Unfortunatly the screen just shows green when plugged in. I have
experimented with custom Xorg.conf's without success. Although the new
Ubuntu without Xorg.conf, this should not be necessary.

Here is the screenshot of the very un-ubuntu error message.

A proper Ubuntu error message should give more details as to which file

[Bug 777957] Re: Uncaught Exception raised - No such File or Directory

2011-05-22 Thread Kat Amsterdam
This is clearly an authorization problem.

In order to debug
I started the program first with:

Running from the Ubuntu System menu.

What happens is I get 3 policy windows.
1 for starting the app
1 for mounting the usb disk
1 for writing the bootloader
then it fails.

so I tried from the comand line using:
usb-creator-gtk -s

This resulted in a pop up box saying installation of the bootloader
failed, after this popup box a policy (see screenshot) window popped up
asking for my password after the fact. By then it was too late, the
installer had stopped.

then I tried with:
gksu usb-creator-gtk -s

This command made a successful disk.

So the issue I suspect is that the program is asking for authorization
to late in the process.

I ran a CLAMAV scan and it marked the FGLRX.ko file as a virus and put it in
the quarantine. The mouse hung, and had to kill compiz from the terminal
(CTRL+ALT+F2), which was running at 100%.
Also had the fuzy colorful screen like the original reporter had.

Firefox is unrelated as I had no firefox open.

[Bug 746662] [NEW] Dutch NL Locale sets everything to English

2011-03-31 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-support-nl

After a regular update both my desktop and laptop locales for nl_NL.UTF-8 are
messed up and tabbing on the command line is a mess.
All my menu's are in English instead of Dutch.
I get these kinds of messages when I double tab to complete the filename
bash: warning: setlocale: LC_CTYPE: cannot change locale (nl)
And the system keeps asking if it can change all my folders to English. Not
cool!

I've done a full reinstall of the packages
language-support-nl
language-pack-nl
language-pack-nl-base

done a dpkg-reconfigure locales

rebooted the system several times

reinstalled Dutch from the Languages settings under System... Languages

As this is happening on two different machines after the same update I
think it's a bug.

Re: [Bug 369965] Re: nm-applet doesn't show all wired networks

2011-03-08 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Hi Mathieu,

Took a while but I think I have a solution.

If it's to lock the device to a particular device. This means that the
system already 'knows' what the valid choices are for the MAC address.
The best way to display this would be with a drop down list of the valid
choices. So the end user could only select out of valid MAC addresses that
Network Manager would be able to use.

I've attached a mockup so you can see what I mean.

*Damiön la Bagh
Amsterdam

2011/2/21 Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre mathieu...@gmail.com

It's really there to lock a connection to a particular device. The
only efficient way to do so is using the system's MAC, though I agree it
might be a little confusing when exposed in UI like this.

If you have ideas on how to display it better, please don't hesitate to
bring them up on the NetworkManager mailing list.

In the beginning it just disappeared when I edited the wired

I don't know if that worked on Ubuntu 8.10, I never had to do this

I don't know if this is related but, when I turn my VPN on, everything

Thanks Mathieu,

So then the setting in nm-manager is very unclear. Why does it have the
option to modify the MAC address if it's not possible to actually do so?

I found a workaround using mac-changer

I needed this because I am a network specialist, and needed this for my
work.

Thanks again Mathieu.

Here is a screenshot showing that in MS Excel 2003 the tooltip is shown
correctly.
And in OpenOffice the tooltip is shown white on yellow.

This really needs to be fixed in Lucid 10.4.2 LTS or 10.4.3 LTS as this
affects more users who use Long Term Support releases such as small
businesses than home power users using the latest and greatest
experimental release.

LibreOffice has the exact same bug.

When I try to report it here as suggested:

I get a certificate error with the website, showing it as unsafe to

[Bug 702451] Re: openoffice-calc tooltips are white on yellow making them unreadable

2011-02-10 Thread Kat Amsterdam
I will try in a virtual machine with a newer version of Ubuntu and
OpenOffice.org

The problem still needs to be fixed for 10.04 LTS
The Long Term Support release is essential for (small)business users of Ubuntu.

See the screenshot. Problem still exists in Maverick.

I did narrow it down to XLS files that exhibit the bad behavior.

[Bug 702451] Re: openoffice-calc tooltips are white on yellow making them unreadable

2011-02-10 Thread Kat Amsterdam

I upgraded to Natty Narhwahl Alpha. But this release is so broken that it
cannot display the Ambiance Theme at all. Just after logging in, it shows the
Ambiance theme for about 10 seconds then it defaults back to the default GTK2.0
look with grey and black. So no way to test in Natty until this other bug is
fixed. (I would guess that it's because not all the artwork is finished).

Today I am at work again and will create a blank XLS file with just the
comment error in it. So anyone who is better at fixing these things can
see what is going wrong.

[Bug 557847] Re: very low connection bit rate

2011-01-20 Thread Kat Amsterdam
I have the same issue with the broadcom card. The hardware does support
N and Bluetooth. I was considering the same solution buying a Intel
5100... But if there is a way to fix this bug that would be better.

What I think happened is that in the package the compile options to
enable N were not set before compiling and packaging.

[Bug 702451] [NEW] openoffice-calc tooltips are white on yellow making them unreadable

2011-01-13 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Papercut incident.

This is exactly the same as this bug
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57226

Yet it still exists in the Ubuntu version of OpenOffice Calc.

The former bug was not solved due to insufficient information I can now
provide sufficient information. But since this affects Ubuntu due to the
standard Ubuntu theme I am reporting it here.

When you open an OpenOffice spreadsheet or excel document with comments
in the fields the tooltips are white text on a yellow background making
them impossible to read.

This is because the Ambiance theme (which is standard in Lucid) has
white text as standard.

The solution is to add the following code to

.gtkrc-2.0

style tooltips {
fg[NORMAL] = { 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 }
text[NORMAL] = { 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 }
}

widget gtk-tooltips* style tooltips

This needs to be added to the standard install of Ubuntu so that users
do not run into this issue.

I have attached a screen shot so you can see the issue.

[Bug 694625] [NEW] USB startup disk creator hangs on Finishing

2010-12-26 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

Packages
 0.2.22 0
500 http://nl3.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe Packages

What I expected to Happen:
When creating the USB disk, after it was written the Finish Dialog should end
and I should get the please remove the usb disk and put it into the computer
you would like to start it with (or something to that effect)

What Happened Instead:
I was creating a Maverick 32-bit desktop stick from an iso file that I have
created sticks with before.
I added 3GB of extra space on the stick with the slider (so that programs will
be persistent) (awesome feature thanks!)
Disk gets created normally
After a while it says 99% complete
Then is goes to Finishing...
and hangs.

So I mount and unmount the stick, unplug it and stick it in the computer
to be booted and it boots just fine... but I am still staring at this
Install Finishing... dialog box on my stick making computer. The cancel
button does not click... it's just stuck.

I've attached the output of lsof in the second post as it may help the
debug process. (this is with the stick removed and the dialog box still
hanging on the screen.

[Bug 588049] Re: ntop crash segfault ... error 4 in libntop-3.3.so ..

2010-12-16 Thread Kat Amsterdam

Workaround: install the 3.4 version from

apt-add repository ppa:sylvain-garcia

then modify /etc/init.d/ntop
Line 96 add the flag -b*(this is the same as --disable-decoders)

(I started with line 95 to display the full modified command)
 start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --name $NAME --exec $DAEMON -- \
  -d -b -L -u $USER -P $HOMEDIR \

then restart ntop

sudo service ntop restart

it would be nice if the package maintainer would add the -b flag to the
package. Or expain to me how to do it and I'll do it myself.

[Bug 469233] Re: ubiquity window cannot be resized to be horizontally smaller on the partition tab

When making 8 or 9 partitions on the drive this is a major irritation. Every
dialog needs to be resizeable everywhere always. It needs to be the users
choice, as screen resolution and size varies largely across platforms.
Scrolling is always bad UI.

[Bug 650544] [NEW] Shiki Themes causes problems with gnome-panel notification area

2010-09-28 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

After installing any of the Shiki-colors-* packages the gnome-panel
notification area behaves erratically.

Here are the steps to reproduce the bug:

1) fresh install of ubuntu
2) install Amarok
3) install shiki-dust-theme
4) Change the theme to shiki-dust
5) use the theme for a while and log in and out of your session at least once
6) Try to minimize Amarok to the system tray by clicking the X and accepting
the message to minimize to system tray
7) no icon for Amarok will show up in the system tray.
8) also the icons for the Network Manager will either disappear or show the
wrong icon status.

There are no problems before installing this package... but once installed the
notification area is erratic.
Changing to another theme does not solve the problem.

[Bug 600517] Re: dkms is not processing vboxdrv must do manually

2010-07-31 Thread Kat Amsterdam
As can be read here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1530691page=4
I am not the only one with this issue.

Out of frustration I've removed all the headers and images for any older
kernels on my system.
Including the 2.6.32-22 generic that dkms was holding on to.

I also tried the solution in #6
sudo /usr/lib/dkms/dkms_autoinstaller start `uname -r`

but this was unsuccesful. dkms kept holding on to 2.6.32-22

 1610 cd ../vboxnetadp/
 1611 sudo chmod a-rwx 3.2.4
 1612 cd ../vboxnetflt/
 1613 sudo chmod a-rwx 3.2.4

Error! Bad conf file.

dkms won't even let me remove the module by hand.

[Bug 600517] Re: dkms is not processing vboxdrv must do manually

2010-07-31 Thread Kat Amsterdam
So I worked around the bug the old fashioned way.

Purged dkms completely from my system, then removed the folder /var/lib/dkms
then reinstalled my videocard and wireless network adapter drivers
Then reconfigured virutalbox

1640 sudo aptitude purge dkms
 1641 cd ~
 1642 sudo rm -r /var/lib/dkms
 1643 sudo aptitud install dkms
 1644 sudo aptitude install dkms
 1645 dkms status
 1646 sudo dpkg-reconfigure virtualbox-3.2
 1647 dkms status

vboxdrv, 3.2.6, 2.6.32-24-generic, x86_64: installed
vboxnetadp, 3.2.6, 2.6.32-24-generic, x86_64: installed
vboxnetflt, 3.2.6, 2.6.32-24-generic, x86_64: installed

Question remains. Why does dkms get stuck, holding on to old entries,
without cleaning them up?
