[Bug 1863282] Re: libreoffice menu bar disappeared

2020-07-28 Thread Ketil Malde
Ubuntu 19.10, using Xmonad as my window manager, and noticed the same
thing. Just confirming Darko's observation above - uninstalling
libreoffice-gtk3 and restarting lowriter appears to have restored the
menus (using some small font, but I only have FHD resolution, so fine
with me).

[Bug 1788928] Re: psmouse: after sleep/suspend thinkpad touchpad not functional

2020-01-04 Thread Ketil Malde
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1786574 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1786574

Chiming in. Lenovo X1C gen 7, with NFC symbol, running Ubuntu 19.10
(5.3.0-24-generic), and trackpad not working after wakeup from suspend
(not sure which level, I just close the lid, notice leds slowly
blinking, then open it again). Nothing about i2c in any
/etc/modprobe.d/* file.

Only caveat: running 1.20 system firmware (20QD00L1MX System Firmware)
since the latest gives me an unreliable external display when using
USB-C/Thunderbolt.

Thanks for following up! I don't use Shotwell any more, if nobody else
corroborates the report, I suggest you just can close it.

[Bug 1670959] Re: systemd-resolved using 100% CPU

2018-03-19 Thread Ketil Malde
Just to chime in: Noticed slow machine and systemd-resolved taking 100%
cpu. Edited /etc/systemd/resolved.conf to DNSSEC=no (not off, as "no"
was commented out in the file). Tried systemctl restart systemd-
resolved, but nothing changed. Tried killall systemd-resolved, nothing.
Tried killall -9, and it respawned a well-behaved process. I recently
installed dnsmasq when my computer failed to resolve anything. This is
a fairly up-to-date Ubuntu 17.10.

[Bug 1173915] Re: initctl continuously takes 100% of CPU

2017-01-18 Thread Ketil
@Arul, I found something similar in my comment above, at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1173915/comments/5.

But it's been almost 4 years since this issue was reported, and over 2
years since I added my comment, and it's clearly not fixed yet, or even
prioritised.

In fact, my general experience reporting Ubuntu issues here on launchpad
is that this is a black hole, issues are left hanging until they are
closed as irrelevant several years later. Critical issues undoubtedly
get more attention, but issues such as this are still a problem.
Annoying, so I don't really see the point in reporting issues here any
more.

Ok. I'll do my best. Here I follow the instructions from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
1)As described above. The Macbook seems to suspend when closing the lid and
then wakes again which is shown by the apple on the back och the lid lightning
up

2) Closing the lid (but even doing it through the shut down menu in mate
and unity)

3) See 2

4) Attached

[Bug 1405232] Re: ping reports wrong IP responding under certain conditions

2016-01-18 Thread Ketil
Couldn't the upstream fix be to time out the DNS resolution? If you
don't have an answer in X seconds/milliseconds, never mind and carry on.
It's just ping, after all, and it's a good idea to make low level
diagnosis independent of higher level functionality, as noted in the
Debian bug report.

Caching hostnames in ping is a possible strategy, but that's what the
local resolver is for. IMHO, that's not something ping should bother
doing.

[Bug 1471230] Re: ping got confused about IP-adress after host unreachable

2015-07-03 Thread Ketil
I see I've made a typo regarding icmp_seq in the output of the second
run of ping (icmp_seq 1, then 2, and then 1 again, but the last one
should be 3). I typed this manually, so there may be other typos as
well. But I can't see any typos regarding the main point, I got the ping
replies from my own IP address, with times on the order of 0.400ms.

[Bug 1471230] [NEW] ping got confused about IP-adress after host unreachable

2015-07-03 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I tried pinging an IP address on an internal network. My IP is
10.0.0.95, and I'm trying to ping 10.0.0.96. Here's what it looked like:

$ ping 10.0.0.96

etc...

So on the initial run, ping claims it got a ping reply from 10.0.0.95, which
isn't the address I'm pinging. It's my host, and it's normal to get the initial
ICMP Destination Host Unreachable messages from the local IP when ARP fails.
I almost immediately reran ping, and now the host was up from the start, and
see responses coming from the actual host that I'm pinging.

Looking at the times, the ping replies appear to actually come from
10.0.0.96, or at least some other remote host, based on the time values.
If I ping 10.0.0.95 (my own IP), I'm seeing time values of 0.040ms or
thereabouts, so an order of magnitude faster.

[Bug 1466608] [NEW] Unable to resolve domains with large EDNS0 replies

2015-06-18 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

Not sure resolvconf is the correct place to report this bug, but I'm
unable to resolve domains with large EDNS0 replies.

A couple of examples are www.sciencedaily.com and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.
Interestingly, they resolve when I use dig domain, but if I enter a
URL with either of those domains in my browser (tried Chromium and
Firefox), then name resolution fails. Ping also fails with a name
resolution error message.

Here's an example:

$ ping www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
ping: unknown host www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

I also watched with tcpdump when trying to look up the domain
www.sciencedaily.com, and when I use dig I immediately get the reply,
but when trying with ping I don't get any reply, and it gives up after 4
queries are sent. Must have something to do with the DNS flags that are
set on the query in the different cases.

Here's a lookup with dig:

20:01:47.857269 IP 127.0.0.1.56927 127.0.1.1.53: 9907+ [1au] A?

20:01:47.869516 IP 127.0.1.1.53 127.0.0.1.56927: 9907 2/6/43 CNAME
ed5n3.x.incapdns.net., A 149.126.72.70 (879)

and here's a name resolution triggered by running ping:

20:02:47.969527 IP 127.0.0.1.35905 127.0.1.1.53: 59118+ A?
www.sciencedaily.com. (38)
20:02:52.974752 IP 127.0.0.1.35905 127.0.1.1.53: 59118+ A?
www.sciencedaily.com. (38)
20:02:57.980296 IP 127.0.0.1.48738 127.0.1.1.53: 3668+ A?
www.sciencedaily.com. (38)
20:03:02.985493 IP 127.0.0.1.48738 127.0.1.1.53: 3668+ A?
www.sciencedaily.com. (38)

I've not experienced this before, though these aren't domains I commonly
visit. Is this a new issue?

[Bug 1466608] Re: Unable to resolve domains with large EDNS0 replies

2015-06-18 Thread Ketil
Thanks, I was hoping for some help to find the right place to report
this.

I poked around some more, and I found out what the problem was. First of
all, my wireless router was confused. I rebooted it, and then everything
started working again.

I did some debugging before I rebooted it, though, and the reason for
the partial failure situation was that EDNS0 wasn't specified in the
queries sent by Ubuntu, but dig specifies it by default (as well as the
AD flag, but I don't think that's relevant). A partial result should
have been given by the DNS server (on the wireless router), or it should
have truncated the reply to force a TCP retry by the client. (Now that
everything works, it trims down the Additional section to fit the
response.) To confirm, I ran dig like this, and these queries failed on
my confused router:

dig +noedns +noadflag @127.0.1.1 www.sciencedaily.com

So if Ubuntu had in fact set EDNS0 in the query, it would have worked.
Falling back to TCP presumably wasn't an option since no
malformed/truncated result was received first.

Feel free to close this issue if my router's behaviour was completely
unacceptable and should cause failure on the client side. If it ought to
have been handled better by Ubuntu, however, this may have been an
interesting corner case for debugging.

Let me know if you need anything else.

[Bug 1466608] Re: Unable to resolve domains with large EDNS0 replies

2015-06-18 Thread Ketil
To get Ubuntu to send EDNS0 queries, I can set this in resolv.conf:

options edns0

That might work around this bug in my router in the future. And in case
anyone is interested, the wireless router is a Netgear WNR2000v5.

I think this case can be closed.

[Bug 1445825] [NEW] Update Manager structures updates wrong

2015-04-18 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

According to Update Manager, ISC DHCP Client and Common files used by
all the isc-dhcp* packages are part of the FreeCAD package, which I get
from the FreeCAD Daily PPA:

  $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/freecad-maintainers-freecad-daily-trusty.list
  deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-maintainers/freecad-daily/ubuntu trusty
main
  # deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-maintainers/freecad-daily/ubuntu
trusty main

If I simulate a freecad upgrade with apt-get, there's no mention of ISC
DHCP. As far as I can tell, ISC DHCP does not have anything to do with
FreeCAD, as it shouldn't, so this appears to be a bug in Update Manager.

I've attached a screenshot showing what this looks like in Update

[Bug 1421204] [NEW] Nautilus slow to react to keyboard input while calculating items in folders

2015-02-12 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I am using Nautilus to navigate to a network share with a few hundred
folders, and my nautilus is set to display the list view. To fill out
the size column, nautilus eagerly traverses all the folders on the
network share to find the number of items inside each folder. While it's
doing this, keyboard input is ignored (or queued until it's done
counting, not sure).

When I navigate to a folder, and I know the name of the folder I want to
access in the next step, I can usually just type the name of the folder
into nautilus, and it jumps to the folder name for me. Instead, I have
to wait, or I have to grab the mouse and start browsing.

I think the correct behaviour would be to run any such item counting in
a way that it doesn't interrupt usability, and give priority to user
input. In most cases, I'd type the name of my folder and hit enter to
open it quite a lot faster than the time nautilus spends just counting
items. That way I'd be saving both time and system resources if nautilus
gave priority to the user rather than to stats counting.

My folder view in nautilus is sorted by name, not size, so the item
counts are only displayed. I'm not actually using them for anything.

Removing the size column seems to improve the situation, but I don't
consider that an acceptable workaround. Fetching all the Modified times
from the server sometimes takes a noticable amount of time as well, so
for good responsiveness I may have to remove that as well, as the
situation is currently.

[Bug 1409325] [NEW] Ubuntu chooses worst quality when connecting to bluetooth headset

2015-01-10 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I have a set of bluetooth headphones, model Arctic P311. When I connect
to these with Ubuntu, the selected mode is Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP). I
always want High Fidelity Playback (A2DP). My Android phone and my

Re: [Bug 461918] Re: Evince fails to print this PDF

2014-12-29 Thread Ketil Malde
Is this an issue on a supported release? If so, please reopen this
report, attach a document this is reproducible with (not post a URL),
and execute the following at a terminal:

I am unable to test this. For printing, I have to specify a different
user name (in .cups/client.conf), and as that is only supported by 'lp',
not evince or xpdf (I think), I can no longer print directly from
applications.

I looked in /proc/PID/fd, and it looked like this:

lrwx-- 1 root root 64 okt. 21 07:50 3 - socket:[10190]

I also ran lsof | grep 10190, and the output looked like this:

initctl 1268 root3u unix 0x8800d719d400
0t0 10190 socket

Not sure any of this helps, but that's what it is showing while using
100% cpu. My laptop is a Toshiba Portege Z30 with a dual core i7-4510U
CPU. I'm running arch amd64.

[Bug 997145] Re: affuse fails when mounting E01 files

2014-10-11 Thread Ketil
Yes, as I mentioned about 2.5 years ago when I reported this issue, the
fix is to use xmount instead of affuse. :)

Still, the reported error Can't open image file: Success was clearly a
bug that should be fixed. I don't use affuse any more, so I don't know
if that has been changed already.

[Bug 1373250] Re: libjudydebian1 and -dev 1.0.5 installs version 1.0.3

2014-10-01 Thread Ketil Malde
This is confusing, but intentional - the upstream source package
(version 1.0.5) nevertheless installs libjudy.so.1.0.3 (which is
considered the *interface* version). Note that Red Hat and derived
system calls the .so 1.0.5 - which confused me even more :-)

Proposed package works for me, and I confirmed again that the version I
had before upgrading had the same issue. From apt-get output:

Unpacking util-linux (2.20.1-5.1ubuntu20.2) over (2.20.1-5.1ubuntu20.1)

I don't see where I can change verification-needed to verification-done,
however. Hopefully someone else can take care of that.

Me too!

I reported this as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
keyboard/+bug/1315122, I didn't find this issue at the time. This is
still a problem for me on Ubuntu 14.04, and happens fairly regularly. To
fix it, I don't need to first select En and then No layout. I simply
select No (which is already selected), and then the layout is as it
should be.

[Bug 1317396] Re: VirtualBox fullscreen grabs keyboard, can't type password from locked screen

2014-05-09 Thread Ketil
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1305586 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305586

Could be the same bug, but not necessarily. I guess it depends on
whether the modal password prompt and running virtualbox in full screen
grabs the keyboard the same way.

In any case, I'd like to make this virtualbox issue a security issue.
Users will invariably type their passwords into whatever is active in
the virtual machine, which could be google searches, chats, documents,
facebook status updates - whatever. That's actually very serious.

[Bug 1317396] [NEW] VirtualBox fullscreen grabs keyboard, can't type password from locked screen

2014-05-08 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 64bit (fresh install) with VirtualBox
4.3.10-dfsg-1, and a Windows 7 professional guest (also 64 bit). I have
installed the Guest Additions in the guest OS (from the guest additions
Ubuntu package, not downloaded by virtualbox).

If I run my guest OS in full screen and Ubuntu locks the screen, I can't
log back in again because the keyboard won't type. Searching online I
found the same issue reported on the VirtualBox bugtracker:

https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13010

After experiencing this 3 times in an hour, I found that hitting Right-
Ctrl (which is the host key in virtualbox) releases the keyboard and I
can type again, so that seems to be a successful workaround. Mouse
events also appear to be captured, so clicking on menu items on the
locked screen (as suggested on the link above) doesn't help, although I
can move the pointer with the mouse when I see the locked screen.

[Bug 1315122] [NEW] Keyboard indicator shows wrong layout, and default layout is not active

2014-05-01 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I have Norwegian set as the default layout, and English as the secondary
layout. Suddenly passwords stop working, and if I test my keyboard
somewhere my writing is visible, I can see that the English layout is
actually the one that is active, even though Norwegian is my default
layout and it is the one that is shown as active in my indicator. I
never change this (on purpose anyway). Just choosing Norwegian again
solves the problem.

This has happened at the Ubuntu login prompt, but it has usually worked
fine. I often suspend and then wake the computer again later, and I
can't recall experiencing this at that point, but suddenly a login
online fails later. It could be that I've hit some key combo, but the
indicator still shows the wrong layout if that's the case.

I had this same issue with Ubuntu 13.10 (though never before, and as you
can see I've been upgrading my Ubuntu since 11.10 or something like
that), but I figured it'd probably just be ignored if I reported it
since 14.04 was around the corner, but I've already experienced the same
with Ubuntu 14.04.

[Bug 906441] Re: intel update 2.15.901 breaks video, reverts to vesa

2014-04-26 Thread Ketil Malde
I stumbled into the same thing: When specifying 'nomodeset' as a kernel
parameter on an Intel i915 system (built in HD4400 graphics), I
sometimes used to get a black screen in 13.09. In 14.04, the system
would come up, but limited to 1024x768 resolution, and the monitor would
be undetected (named built in display). xrandr would offer no
options, and complain that:

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

My understanding is that nomodeset disables KMS, which causes Xorg to
use the Vesa driver, instead of the i915 driver. The Vesa driver then
fails to detect the correct monitor resolution. Removing nomodeset
and running update-grub appears to fix the problem.

I don't think this deserves INVALID, since I feel that:

a) vesafb should still be able to at least detect the monitor - and ideally,
still be able to change the resolution
b) missing KMS should be clearly and accurately reported - both from xrandr,
in Xorg.0.log, and in graphics settings panel
c) lacking KMS should not disable i915 (or is this unavoidable?)

[Bug 1078695] Re: xrandr : Failed to get size of gamma for output default

2014-04-26 Thread Ketil Malde
I don't know if it is relevant here, but I got the same response from
xrandr (about gamma), and also struggled with wrong resolutions. For me,
the cause was the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter, this (i.e. disabling
kernel modesetting) caused the i915 graphics driver to fail, and the
vesa driver to be used instead. Perhaps you can check in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log that the correct driver is being used? The log also
contains the kernel command linke - although you may have to use
'nomodeset' to get nvidia to work (that was the reason it was in mine -
when I removed the graphics card, I forgot to revert the grub options).

Or, just changing the

with no way of opening the running applicaiton without a panel or dock

2013-08-14 Thread Ketil Malde
Pidgin has been working for me (with the env variable workaround for MS
servers), but now suddenly it fails to display a window. Debug (-d) and
strace seem to indicate the program is otherwise working. When I
Ctrl-C, the window appears to flicker on screen before terminating.
While it is running, the window also shows up in xlsclients. I'm not
using Unity (just a simple XMonad setup), so if this is indeed the same
problem, it's proabably not Unity-related. Ubuntu 13.04.

I can't believe this is still in. Is CUPS unused in enterprise

In my opinion, CUPS is good infrastructure, but it needs a bit of love
with documentation and user interaction and so on. Which it somehow
isn't getting, and it puzzles me why - most other system critical stuff
seems to attract developers more or less automatically...

[Bug 1190709] [NEW] recordmydesktop's capture missing parts of windows

2013-06-13 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

When I try to capture a video of my desktop with recordmydesktop, large
parts of the windows I'm trying to capture details from are missing. It
seems that some on-screen changes aren't captured by recordmydesktop.
I'm attaching a screenshot.

Not sure if this has something to do with X drivers, do I need to
disable or change something to record the desktop? Couldn't see any
options in recordmydesktop to work around this. Using --full-shots did
not help.

[Bug 1190723] [NEW] No way to control istanbul

2013-06-13 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

From istanbul's man page:

istanbul is a program that allow you to record your desktop session.
After you started it, you can control it with the icon in the
notification area: a click on the icon to start recording, another
click to stop.

There's no icon in the notification area in unity, so there's no way to
control istanbul.

[Bug 1185025] [NEW] Ubuntu 13.04 unable to mount Nexenta CIFS shares

2013-05-28 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 I have experienced some compatibility
issues when mounting CIFS shares on the Ubuntu 13.04 workstation. The
following systems were tested:

 * Windows 2003 server CIFS shares: Success
 * EMC VNX CIFS shares: Success
 * Ubuntu 10.04.2 CIFS shares: Success
 * Nexenta CIFS shares: Failed

All the same shares continue to work from Ubuntu 12.10 systems. So in
Ubuntu 13.04, there has arisen a CIFS compatibility issue between Ubuntu
and Nexenta. I have also been in touch with our Nexenta supplier, and
they have set up a new machine with Nexenta OS with a CIFS share, and a
new install of Ubuntu 13.04, and they reproduced the same error. My
environment uses AD authentication, but the issue was reproduced without
AD authentication, so that's not it.

Here's the syslog excerpt from the failed mount, /proc/fs/cifs/cifsFYI
was set to 1 (removed date and hostname for brevity):

To summarize, a change that occurred between Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu
13.04 is causing compatibility issues with the Nexenta CIFS shares. I
can't say from the information I have whether it's Ubuntu or Nexenta
that is not compliant, but if it is Ubuntu, this may be affecting other
systems as well.

[Bug 1174098] [NEW] blockdev doesn't work as reported with loop devices

2013-04-28 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

According to blockdev's manual:

   --report
Print a report for the specified device. It is possible to give
multiple devices. If none is given, all devices which appear in
/proc/partitions are shown. Note that the partition StartSec is
  in 512-byte sectors.

However, I'm running Ubuntu installed with wubi, so my root dev is on a
loopback device. Here's my /proc/partitions:

major minor #blocks name

   70 30457856 loop0
   71 31457280 loop1
   80 732574584 sda
   81 26214400 sda1
   82 307263488 sda2
   83 1 sda3
   85 399092736 sda5

So according to the manual, all these devices should be printed with
blockdev --report. But they are not, the loop devices are excluded:

$ sudo blockdev --report
[sudo] password for user:
RORA SSZ BSZ StartSecSize Device
rw 256 512 4096 0750156374016 /dev/sda

[Bug 1174098] Re: blockdev doesn't work as reported with loop devices

2013-04-28 Thread Ketil
Turns out blockdev is actually getting an ioctl error on loop devices
when run with --report. I had only tested a few values directly, eg
using --getsz. Perhaps that is why this happens?

$ sudo blockdev --report /dev/loop0
RORA SSZ BSZ StartSecSize Device
blockdev: ioctl error on /dev/loop0
$ sudo blockdev --g
60915712
$

2013-03-21 Thread Ketil Malde
After some time, bandwidth increased to reasonable values, and after
some hours, the balance operation completed. After that, performance
seems to be okay. I've also added autodefrag as a mount option in
fstab, just in case. It worries me that the filesystem degrades like
this though.

Previous mount options: btrfs defaults,noatime,compress=lzo

[Bug 791992] Re: btrfs in 2.6.38 extremely slow (when near full?)

2013-03-20 Thread Ketil Malde
Upgraded to 12.10 and 3.5.0-26, the filesystem is still hosed. I'm
rerunning a 'balance', but I notice with 'iostat' that disk bandwidth is
very poorly utilized (getting a couple of MB/s from each disk, and
mostly one at a time). Still, there is now quite a bit of space on all
spindles, and it didn't seem to help much.

[Bug 791992] Re: btrfs in 2.6.38 extremely slow (when near full?)

2013-03-19 Thread Ketil Malde
I think this is caused by poorly balanced disks. I.e:

nmdbio:~ % sudo btrfs fi show /dev/sdb
Label: 'scratch' uuid: 184706ea-89f5-438a-a9f5-b5e91b3ce267
Total devices 3 FS bytes used 7.57TB
devid3 size 2.73TB used 2.45TB path /dev/sdc
devid2 size 2.73TB used 2.73TB path /dev/sdb
devid1 size 2.73TB used 2.73TB path /dev/sda

Btrfs v0.20-rc1

Note that two disks are entirely filled up, and only one has free space.
If I were to venture a guess, btrfs struggles to shuffle data about in
order to write multiple copies of metadata to each spindle.

[Bug 1144682] [NEW] Unclear where technical items are hidden

2013-03-04 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

This is a usability issue.

I tried to install Xen using Ubuntu Software Center. First I searched
for xen but didn't find the hypervisor. I tried a few options like
*xen* and some others, but I only got xenwatch, xenlog and vnc-client
among my search results. I gave up and used apt-get.

I later discovered:

1. Searching for xen- instead of just xen DOES show xen-hypervisor options.
Explain that!?
2. There's a well hidden Show XX technical items at the bottom of the window.

This is bad usability. The technical items definition seems useless.
Aren't xenwatch, xenlog and vnc-client technical items? What exactly is
a technical item?

But if you insist on hiding packages like that, there should be a
clearly visible meta-entry among the search results to show the rest of
the entries.

[Bug 1114530] [NEW] Shotwell gets confused (after cleaning .cache/shotwell?)

2013-02-03 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I needed some space and deleted $HOME/.cache/shotwell which took
hundreds of MB. The next time I started shotwell, it proceeded to
regenerate thumbnails of all images. When exiting shotwell, the GUI
disappears, but the process keeps running at 100% for ages (now 30
minutes later).

Before exiting shotwell I also tried importing pictures from some cameras. The
first import, from an SD card plugged into my laptop's SD card reader, worked
fine. When I next tried to import from another camera that was connected with
USB, Shotwell just says
Starting import, please wait...
and
Fetching photo information

for a long time (probably 45 minutes already). There were 150 images on
the camera, so this should be done already.

This is the point where shotwell won't go away properly - the process
remains running despite clicking the X in the top corner, and when I
restart shotwell, it seems to be in the exact same state as when I
clicked the X.

[Bug 1114545] [NEW] Startup Disk Creator fails when erasing disk

2013-02-03 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I am trying to erase a disk with Startup Disk Creator. The processes
udisks-daemon and udisks-helper-m(something) run for a long time. I
tried stracing the last one, and saw lots of these:

write(2, Error: , 7) = 7
write(2, Can't have a partition outside the disk!\n, 41) = 41
write(2, new_size=15927345152 but resulting size, 15926820864, smaller than
requested, 76) = 76
write(2, \n, 1) = 1

Then the processes disappeared, and I got a popup window:

System program problem detected
Do you want to report the problem now?

I click that I want to report the problem, after which I have to enter my root
password, and then I finally get the error:

Sorry, the program udisks-daemon closed unexpectedly
Your computer does not have enough free memory to automatically analyse the
problem and send a report to the developers.
-

I have 8GB of RAM on my laptop, and I'm not using it for anything else
right now. This seems to be a major flaw with ubuntu-bug as well, I'm
unable to report bugs because of bugs. It should always fall back to
sending what it can.

[Bug 1099197] [NEW] gphoto2 backend shows incomplete folder listings

2013-01-13 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I imported photos from my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone to Shotwell, but lots
of photos were missing. Manually browsing the directory structure on the
phone from my computer using Nautilus, I see 514 items in the
SAMSUNG_Android/DCIM/Camera folder, the last file dated 14 May 2012.

However, browsing the folder /sdcard/DCIM/Camera on the phone itself, I
see a lot more items (not numbered, I haven't bothered counting), and
there are pictures dated until 13 January 2013. I also see the same
files from May 2012 and earlier.

So, it appears that the gvfs gphoto2 backend is for some reason showing
some, but not all, files and folders on the device.

Re: [Bug 1080591] Re: shotwell fails to authenticate with non-primary address

2012-11-20 Thread Ketil Malde
Lucas Beeler 1080...@bugs.launchpad.net writes:

Are you using the Ubuntu Online Accounts control panel to set up your
Google account or are you configuring it directly in Shotwell?

The latter, but it is hard to tell, since it is all `not mere web links,
but solid code immersed into the desktop'. I think I saw a popup
window which looked like a web page asking for Google authentication at
one point, similar to the picture in:

  http://www.iloveubuntu.net/online-accounts-landed-ubuntu-1210-default

I guess I am using UOA, I tried to delete the authorization info I could
find in the gconf.xml files under .shotwell, but it didn't seem to
change anything. I'll try to hunt and destroy any UOA stuff.

 Note that
since you're running Quantal, unless you built and installed Shotwell
from source, the default build of Shotwell that comes with Quantal has
been patched downstream to use the Ubuntu Online Accounts system for
Google authentication. Hence, this could be a bug either with Shotwell
 or with Ubuntu Online Accounts.

Right, thanks.

I really wish people would stop the immersing thing, it just confuses
things and makes them more complex and fragile.

[Bug 1080591] [NEW] shotwell fails to authenticate with non-primary address

2012-11-19 Thread Ketil Malde
Public bug reported:

I am trying to export some pictures from Shotwell to my Picasa account.
I select Picasa from the publish list, and push the button to
authenticate. I am asked for password, which I enter. I am then told
that Authentication failed. Subsequent attempts go directly to
Authentication failed, and there is no apparent way to enter the
password again.

Cause: I am using a non-gmail email address to log on to Google. This
used to work, but something - presumably Google - has changed this.

Suggestions:

1) Shotwell should be more informative about the Authentication Failure,
and report what exactly is wrong. I thought I had mistyped the
password, and then it's frustrating not to be offered the opportunity to
retype it.

2) The login dialog should offer a direct link or pointer to the
accounts settings, now I need to select Add an account from the drop
down.

3) Incidentally, removing accounts doesn't work, in the end I had to
disable two (non-working) instances of Google account configurations.

Anyway, not exactly a bug, but hopefully a report that lets Shotwell
become even better.

Shotwell version 0.13.0-0ubuntu3, on Ubuntu 12.10, 64bit.

[Bug 728350] Re: man lpstat: wrong information about running without arguments

2012-11-09 Thread Ketil Malde
Unfortunately, the CUPS developers - if there indeed are any - do not
give a shit. The command line tools are brain dead by design, the
documentation is inaccurate, there are essentially no error checking or
reporting, and it has been this way since the inception.

Here's a bug from 2006 - guess what, this is still the status quo in
Ubuntu 12.10, over six years later:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=381252

Command line printing isn't a priority in Ubuntu, nor is difficult
corner cases, like specifying a username.

[Bug 1067318] [NEW] RabbitVCS Gedit plugin is for Gedit v2, but Ubuntu is bundled with Gedit v3

2012-10-16 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

This package contains the rabbitvcs plugin for gedit v2, but since
Ubuntu 12.04 is bundled with gedit v3, it doesn't work.

It appears others have had the same issue, and have solved it by
installing newer packages:

http://code.google.com/p/rabbitvcs/issues/detail?id=622

It seems to me that this package may as well be removed from the package
repo unless fixed, it just won't work.

[Bug 1041211] [NEW] firefox repeatedly crashing on startup when Global Menu Bar Integration enabled

2012-08-24 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

My browser crashed while streaming video from an online news site. Next
time I restarted, there was a new NoScript update installed, and then
firefox crashed immediately. After that, firefox would crash within 5
seconds of every restart. After retrying a number of times, firefox
detected that it was crashing on startup, and gave me some options to
start in safe mode or disable various options and restart.

I managed to disable all plugins, and now Firefox is been working again.
Enabling one by one plugin, I discovered that the Global Menu Bar
Integration causes firefox to crash when I enable it. I'm leaving it
disabled for now.

[Bug 998864] [NEW] Shotwell's menu disappeared from Unity

2012-05-13 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I have a pretty fresh upgrade of Ubuntu 12.04. I was trying to import
some pictures from a folder using Shotwell, but for some reason the
import button (in the folder select dialog) failed. After that, I had
trouble ending Shotwell, and I think this was when the menu items along
the top of the screen stopped appearing. I managed to end shotwell by
changing desktops and minimizing and maximizing the app a few times,
then the (X) worked.

After I restarted Shotwell, the top menus still would not work. See
attached top corner of full screenshot, showing the top menu bar, with
only the window close, minimize and maximize buttons, but no menus.

I'm assuming this is a Unity issue, and not Shotwell.

[Bug 997145] [NEW] affuse fails when mounting E01 files

2012-05-09 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

When attempting to mount an E01 file with affuse, it fails with:

$ sudo affuse test.E01 /mnt/tmp
Can't open image file: Success

Rerunning with strace to see what's going on, I see that affuse never
even tries to open test.E01, but dies before getting that far. Here are
the last 9 lines output in the strace log:

dup(2) = 3
fcntl(3, F_GETFL) = 0x8002 (flags O_RDWR|O_LARGEFILE)
fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0620, st_rdev=makedev(136, 1), ...}) = 0
mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) =
0x7fe8af4d7000
lseek(3, 0, SEEK_CUR) = -1 ESPIPE (Illegal seek)
write(3, Can't open image file: Success\n, 31) = 31
close(3)= 0
munmap(0x7fe8af4d7000, 4096)= 0
exit_group(1) = ?

So it apparently tries to lseek() to the current offset(!) in file
descriptor 3, which is a duplicate of file descriptor 2, which is
STDERR.

As far as I know, this was a bug in Ubuntu 11.10 as well, but worked
fine in Ubuntu 11.04.

to make this a little more realistic
$ ewfacquire -c fast -t image img.dd # use defaults

It turns out ewf support was removed from afflib-tools. The fix is to
use xmount instead.

Instead of supporting ewf again, perhaps affuse should report an error
instead of failing with Success.

[Bug 997307] [NEW] lcpci -vvv gives pcilib: sysfs_read_vpd: read failed: Connection timed out

2012-05-09 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

I get an error from lspci -vvv:

Repeating with strace to see what's going on:

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on an Asus U36SD laptop.

$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 3.2.0-24.37-generic 3.2.14

I'm attaching lspci-vnvn.log, running that command also gave the same
error message again.

[Bug 997307] Re: lcpci -vvv gives pcilib: sysfs_read_vpd: read failed: Connection timed out

2012-05-09 Thread Ketil
Hmm, I just noticed these in dmesg, I guess that might be the issue. Is
this likely to be a correct diagnosis, or can I do something to improve
the situation?

atl1c :05:00.0: vpd r/w failed. This is likely a firmware bug on
this device. Contact the card vendor for a firmware update.

I don't really know if this matters much, but there's a bug somewhere...

[Bug 954127] [NEW] Network configuration fails during installation of 12.04

2012-03-13 Thread Ketil Malde
Public bug reported:

Under installation of 12.04, network configuration with dhcp failed. I
was still able to configure the network by switching to a console and
running 'dhclient' manually. I notice the installer runs dhclient with
a specific config file, perhaps this somehow interferes with my DHCP
server?
