Ubuntu 19.10, using Xmonad as my window manager, and noticed the same thing. [Bug 1670959] Re: systemd-resolved using 100% CPU
Just to chime in: Noticed slow machine and systemd-resolved taking 100% cpu. Edited /etc/systemd/resolved.conf to DNSSEC=no (not off, as "no" was commented out in the file). [Bug 1173915] Re: initctl continuously takes 100% of CPU
@Arul, I found something similar in my comment above, at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1173915/comments/5. But it's been almost 4 years since this issue was reported, and over 2 years since I added my comment, and it's clearly not fixed yet, or even prioritised. In fact, my general experience reporting Ubuntu issues here on launchpad is that this is a black hole, issues are left hanging until they are closed as irrelevant several years later. Critical issues undoubtedly get more attention, but issues such as this are still a problem. Annoying, so I don't really see the point in reporting issues here any more. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173915 Title: initctl continuously takes 100% of CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/upstart/+bug/1173915/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1405232] Re: ping reports wrong IP responding under certain conditions
Couldn't the upstream fix be to time out the DNS resolution? If you don't have an answer in X seconds/milliseconds, never mind and carry on. It's just ping, after all, and it's a good idea to make low level diagnosis independent of higher level functionality, as noted in the Debian bug report. Caching hostnames in ping is a possible strategy, but that's what the local resolver is for. So on the initial run, ping claims it got a ping reply from 10.0.0.95, which isn't the address I'm pinging. It's my host, and it's normal to get the initial ICMP Destination Host Unreachable messages from the local IP when ARP fails. I almost immediately reran ping, and now the host was up from the start, and see responses coming from the actual host that I'm pinging. Looking at the times, the ping replies appear to actually come from 10.0.0.96, or at least some other remote host, based on the time values. If I ping 10.0.0.95 (my own IP), I'm seeing time values of 0.040ms or thereabouts, so an order of magnitude faster. [Bug 1466608] [NEW] Unable to resolve domains with large EDNS0 replies
Public bug reported: Not sure resolvconf is the correct place to report this bug, but I'm unable to resolve domains with large EDNS0 replies. A couple of examples are www.sciencedaily.com and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Interestingly, they resolve when I use dig domain, but if I enter a URL with either of those domains in my browser (tried Chromium and Firefox), then name resolution fails. Ping also fails with a name resolution error message. [Bug 1466608] Re: Unable to resolve domains with large EDNS0 replies
Thanks, I was hoping for some help to find the right place to report this. I poked around some more, and I found out what the problem was. First of all, my wireless router was confused. I rebooted it, and then everything started working again. I did some debugging before I rebooted it, though, and the reason for the partial failure situation was that EDNS0 wasn't specified in the queries sent by Ubuntu, but dig specifies it by default (as well as the AD flag, but I don't think that's relevant). A partial result should have been given by the DNS server (on the wireless router), or it should have truncated the reply to force a TCP retry by the client. (Now that everything works, it trims down the Additional section to fit the response.) To confirm, I ran dig like this, and these queries failed on my confused router: dig +noedns +noadflag @127.0.1.1 www.sciencedaily.com So if Ubuntu had in fact set EDNS0 in the query, it would have worked. Falling back to TCP presumably wasn't an option since no malformed/truncated result was received first. Feel free to close this issue if my router's behaviour was completely unacceptable and should cause failure on the client side. If it ought to have been handled better by Ubuntu, however, this may have been an interesting corner case for debugging. [Bug 1445825] [NEW] Update Manager structures updates wrong
Public bug reported: According to Update Manager, ISC DHCP Client and Common files used by all the isc-dhcp* packages are part of the FreeCAD package, which I get from the FreeCAD Daily PPA: $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/freecad-maintainers-freecad-daily-trusty.list deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-maintainers/freecad-daily/ubuntu trusty main # deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-maintainers/freecad-daily/ubuntu trusty main If I simulate a freecad upgrade with apt-get, there's no mention of ISC DHCP. [Bug 1421204] [NEW] Nautilus slow to react to keyboard input while calculating items in folders
Public bug reported: I am using Nautilus to navigate to a network share with a few hundred folders, and my nautilus is set to display the list view. To fill out the size column, nautilus eagerly traverses all the folders on the network share to find the number of items inside each folder. While it's doing this, keyboard input is ignored (or queued until it's done counting, not sure). When I navigate to a folder, and I know the name of the folder I want to access in the next step, I can usually just type the name of the folder into nautilus, and it jumps to the folder name for me. Instead, I have to wait, or I have to grab the mouse and start browsing. I think the correct behaviour would be to run any such item counting in a way that it doesn't interrupt usability, and give priority to user input. In most cases, I'd type the name of my folder and hit enter to open it quite a lot faster than the time nautilus spends just counting items. That way I'd be saving both time and system resources if nautilus gave priority to the user rather than to stats counting. My folder view in nautilus is sorted by name, not size, so the item counts are only displayed. I'm not actually using them for anything. Removing the size column seems to improve the situation, but I don't consider that an acceptable workaround. Fetching all the Modified times from the server sometimes takes a noticable amount of time as well, so for good responsiveness I may have to remove that as well, as the situation is currently. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1305586 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305586 Could be the same bug, but not necessarily. I guess it depends on whether the modal password prompt and running virtualbox in full screen grabs the keyboard the same way. In any case, I'd like to make this virtualbox issue a security issue. Users will invariably type their passwords into whatever is active in the virtual machine, which could be google searches, chats, documents, facebook status updates - whatever. [Bug 1317396] [NEW] VirtualBox fullscreen grabs keyboard, can't type password from locked screen
Public bug reported: I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 64bit (fresh install) with VirtualBox 4.3.10-dfsg-1, and a Windows 7 professional guest (also 64 bit). I have installed the Guest Additions in the guest OS (from the guest additions Ubuntu package, not downloaded by virtualbox). If I run my guest OS in full screen and Ubuntu locks the screen, I can't log back in again because the keyboard won't type. Searching online I found the same issue reported on the VirtualBox bugtracker: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13010 After experiencing this 3 times in an hour, I found that hitting Right- Ctrl (which is the host key in virtualbox) releases the keyboard and I can type again, so that seems to be a successful workaround. Mouse events also appear to be captured, so clicking on menu items on the locked screen (as suggested on the link above) doesn't help, although I can move the pointer with the mouse when I see the locked screen. $ lsb_release -rd: Description: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Release: 14.04 $Â apt-cache policy virtualbox virtualbox: Installed: 4.3.10-dfsg-1 Candidate: 4.3.10-dfsg-1 Version table: 4.3.10-dfsg-1 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/multiverse amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: virtualbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1317396 Title: VirtualBox fullscreen grabs keyboard, can't type password from locked screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1317396/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1315122] [NEW] Keyboard indicator shows wrong layout, and default layout is not active
Public bug reported: I have Norwegian set as the default layout, and English as the secondary layout. Suddenly passwords stop working, and if I test my keyboard somewhere my writing is visible, I can see that the English layout is actually the one that is active, even though Norwegian is my default layout and it is the one that is shown as active in my indicator. I never change this (on purpose anyway). Just choosing Norwegian again solves the problem. This has happened at the Ubuntu login prompt, but it has usually worked fine. I often suspend and then wake the computer again later, and I can't recall experiencing this at that point, but suddenly a login online fails later. It could be that I've hit some key combo, but the indicator still shows the wrong layout if that's the case. I had this same issue with Ubuntu 13.10 (though never before, and as you can see I've been upgrading my Ubuntu since 11.10 or something like that), but I figured it'd probably just be ignored if I reported it since 14.04 was around the corner, but I've already experienced the same with Ubuntu 14.04. [Bug 906441] Re: intel update 2.15.901 breaks video, reverts to vesa
I stumbled into the same thing: When specifying 'nomodeset' as a kernel parameter on an Intel i915 system (built in HD4400 graphics), I sometimes used to get a black screen in 13.09. In 14.04, the system would come up, but limited to 1024x768 resolution, and the monitor would be undetected (named built in display). xrandr would offer no options, and complain that: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default My understanding is that nomodeset disables KMS, which causes Xorg to use the Vesa driver, instead of the i915 driver. The Vesa driver then fails to detect the correct monitor resolution. Removing nomodeset and running update-grub appears to fix the problem. I don't think this deserves INVALID, since I feel that: a) vesafb should still be able to at least detect the monitor - and ideally, still be able to change the resolution b) missing KMS should be clearly and accurately reported - both from xrandr, in Xorg.0.log, and in graphics settings panel c) lacking KMS should not disable i915 (or is this unavoidable?) ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/906441 Title: intel update 2.15.901 breaks video, reverts to vesa To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/906441/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1078695] Re: xrandr : Failed to get size of gamma for output default
I don't know if it is relevant here, but I got the same response from xrandr (about gamma), and also struggled with wrong resolutions. For me, the cause was the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter, this (i.e. disabling kernel modesetting) caused the i915 graphics driver to fail, and the vesa driver to be used instead. Perhaps you can check in /var/log/Xorg.0.log that the correct driver is being used? The log also contains the kernel command linke - although you may have to use 'nomodeset' to get nvidia to work (that was the reason it was in mine - when I removed the graphics card, I forgot to revert the grub options). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1078695 Title: xrandr : Failed to get size of gamma for output default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/x11-utils/+bug/1078695/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1174098] [NEW] blockdev doesn't work as reported with loop devices
Public bug reported: According to blockdev's manual: --report Print a report for the specified device. It is possible to give multiple devices. If none is given, all devices which appear in /proc/partitions are shown. Note that the partition StartSec is in 512-byte sectors. However, I'm running Ubuntu installed with wubi, so my root dev is on a loopback device. Here's my /proc/partitions: major minor #blocks name 70 30457856 loop0 71 31457280 loop1 80 732574584 sda 81 26214400 sda1 82 307263488 sda2 83 1 sda3 85 399092736 sda5 So according to the manual, all these devices should be printed with blockdev --report. [Bug 1174098] Re: blockdev doesn't work as reported with loop devices
Turns out blockdev is actually getting an ioctl error on loop devices when run with --report. I had only tested a few values directly, eg using --getsz. [Bug 791992] Re: btrfs in 2.6.38 extremely slow (when near full?)
After some time, bandwidth increased to reasonable values, and after some hours, the balance operation completed. After that, performance seems to be okay. I've also added autodefrag as a mount option in fstab, just in case. It worries me that the filesystem degrades like this though. Previous mount options: btrfs defaults, noatime, compress=lzo -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/791992 Title: btrfs in 2.6.38 extremely slow (when near full?) [Bug 791992] Re: btrfs in 2.6.38 extremely slow (when near full?)
Upgraded to 12.10 and 3.5.0-26, the filesystem is still hosed. I'm rerunning a 'balance', but I notice with 'iostat' that disk bandwidth is very poorly utilized (getting a couple of MB/s from each disk, and mostly one at a time). Still, there is now quite a bit of space on all spindles, and it didn't seem to help much. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/791992 Title: btrfs in 2.6.38 extremely slow (when near full?) I think this is caused by poorly balanced disks. [Bug 1144682] [NEW] Unclear where technical items are hidden
Public bug reported: This is a usability issue. I tried to install Xen using Ubuntu Software Center. First I searched for xen but didn't find the hypervisor. I tried a few options like *xen* and some others, but I only got xenwatch, xenlog and vnc-client among my search results. I gave up and used apt-get. I later discovered: 1. Searching for xen- instead of just xen DOES show xen-hypervisor options. Explain that!? 2. There's a well hidden Show XX technical items at the bottom of the window. This is bad usability. The technical items definition seems useless. Aren't xenwatch, xenlog and vnc-client technical items? What exactly is a technical item? But if you insist on hiding packages like that, there should be a clearly visible meta-entry among the search results to show the rest of the entries. [Bug 1114530] [NEW] Shotwell gets confused (after cleaning .cache/shotwell?)
Public bug reported: I needed some space and deleted $HOME/.cache/shotwell which took hundreds of MB. The next time I started shotwell, it proceeded to regenerate thumbnails of all images. When exiting shotwell, the GUI disappears, but the process keeps running at 100% for ages (now 30 minutes later). Before exiting shotwell I also tried importing pictures from some cameras. The first import, from an SD card plugged into my laptop's SD card reader, worked fine. When I next tried to import from another camera that was connected with USB, Shotwell just says Starting import, please wait... and Fetching photo information for a long time (probably 45 minutes already). [Bug 1114545] [NEW] Startup Disk Creator fails when erasing disk
Public bug reported: I am trying to erase a disk with Startup Disk Creator. The processes udisks-daemon and udisks-helper-m(something) run for a long time. I tried stracing the last one, and saw lots of these: write(2, Error: , 7) = 7 write(2, Can't have a partition outside the disk!\n, 41) = 41 write(2, new_size=15927345152 but resulting size, 15926820864, smaller than requested, 76) = 76 write(2, \n, 1) = 1 Then the processes disappeared, and I got a popup window: System program problem detected Do you want to report the problem now? I click that I want to report the problem, after which I have to enter my root password, and then I finally get the error: Sorry, the program udisks-daemon closed unexpectedly Your computer does not have enough free memory to automatically analyse the problem and send a report to the developers. - I have 8GB of RAM on my laptop, and I'm not using it for anything else right now. [Bug 1099197] [NEW] gphoto2 backend shows incomplete folder listings
Public bug reported: I imported photos from my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone to Shotwell, but lots of photos were missing. Manually browsing the directory structure on the phone from my computer using Nautilus, I see 514 items in the SAMSUNG_Android/DCIM/Camera folder, the last file dated 14 May 2012. However, browsing the folder /sdcard/DCIM/Camera on the phone itself, I see a lot more items (not numbered, I haven't bothered counting), and there are pictures dated until 13 January 2013. I also see the same files from May 2012 and earlier. So, it appears that the gvfs gphoto2 backend is for some reason showing some, but not all, files and folders on the device. Re: [Bug 1080591] Re: shotwell fails to authenticate with non-primary address
Lucas Beeler 1080...@bugs.launchpad.net writes: Are you using the Ubuntu Online Accounts control panel to set up your Google account or are you configuring it directly in Shotwell? The latter, but it is hard to tell, since it is all `not mere web links, but solid code immersed into the desktop'. I think I saw a popup window which looked like a web page asking for Google authentication at one point, similar to the picture in: http://www.iloveubuntu.net/online-accounts-landed-ubuntu-1210-default I guess I am using UOA, I tried to delete the authorization info I could find in the gconf.xml files under .shotwell, but it didn't seem to change anything. I'll try to hunt and destroy any UOA stuff. Note that since you're running Quantal, unless you built and installed Shotwell from source, the default build of Shotwell that comes with Quantal has been patched downstream to use the Ubuntu Online Accounts system for Google authentication. Hence, this could be a bug either with Shotwell or with Ubuntu Online Accounts. Right, thanks. [Bug 1080591] [NEW] shotwell fails to authenticate with non-primary address
Public bug reported: I am trying to export some pictures from Shotwell to my Picasa account. I select Picasa from the publish list, and push the button to authenticate. I am asked for password, which I enter. I am then told that Authentication failed. Subsequent attempts go directly to Authentication failed, and there is no apparent way to enter the password again. Cause: I am using a non-gmail email address to log on to Google. This used to work, but something - presumably Google - has changed this. Suggestions: 1) Shotwell should be more informative about the Authentication Failure, and report what exactly is wrong. I thought I had mistyped the password, and then it's frustrating not to be offered the opportunity to retype it. 2) The login dialog should offer a direct link or pointer to the accounts settings, now I need to select Add an account from the drop down. 3) Incidentally, removing accounts doesn't work, in the end I had to disable two (non-working) instances of Google account configurations. Anyway, not exactly a bug, but hopefully a report that lets Shotwell become even better. [Bug 997145] [NEW] affuse fails when mounting E01 files
Public bug reported: When attempting to mount an E01 file with affuse, it fails with: $ sudo affuse test.E01 /mnt/tmp Can't open image file: Success Rerunning with strace to see what's going on, I see that affuse never even tries to open test.E01, but dies before getting that far. Here are the last 9 lines output in the strace log: dup(2) = 3 fcntl(3, F_GETFL) = 0x8002 (flags O_RDWR|O_LARGEFILE) fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0620, st_rdev=makedev(136, 1), ...}) = 0 mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fe8af4d7000 lseek(3, 0, SEEK_CUR) = -1 ESPIPE (Illegal seek) write(3, Can't open image file: Success\n, 31) = 31 close(3)= 0 munmap(0x7fe8af4d7000, 4096)= 0 exit_group(1) = ? So it apparently tries to lseek() to the current offset(!) in file descriptor 3, which is a duplicate of file descriptor 2, which is STDERR. As far as I know, this was a bug in Ubuntu 11.10 as well, but worked fine in Ubuntu 11.04. [Bug 997145] Re: affuse fails when mounting E01 files
I have verified that the same happens if I create the image witih ewfacquire. This test can be done quite simply: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=img.dd bs=1M count=256 $ mkfs.ext2 img.dd# not necessary, just to make this a little more realistic $ ewfacquire -c fast -t image img.dd # use defaults $ sudo affuse image.E01 /mnt Can't open image file: Success -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/997145 Title: affuse fails when mounting E01 files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/afflib/+bug/997145/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 997145] Re: affuse fails when mounting E01 files
It turns out ewf support was removed from afflib-tools. The fix is to use xmount instead. Instead of supporting ewf again, perhaps affuse should report an error instead of failing with Success. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/997145 Title: affuse fails when mounting E01 files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/afflib/+bug/997145/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 997307] Re: lcpci -vvv gives pcilib: sysfs_read_vpd: read failed: Connection timed out
