[Bug 1953409] Re: Timeshift mounts unclean partitions to back up onto? And observations.

2021-12-06 Thread Kev Green
PS. The partition that timeshift was backing up to at the time was,
IIRC, not in use for anything else and not mounted by any other means,
which is why this points to timeshift having mounted it, and hence
updatedb having tried to traverse it, and further corrupted it, or at
very least complained it was mounted and was corrupt.

[Bug 1953409] [NEW] Timeshift mounts unclean partitions to back up onto? And observations.

2021-12-06 Thread Kev Green
Public bug reported:

So, I had an absolute horror of a time which badly broke my system in a
number of ways. Tracing things back it appears to originate with
Timeshift. Although I can't readily say which version because things
were that broken (I might be able to dig it up if essential).

The crux of it seems to be that timeshift seeks to mount a filesystem to
perform backups to, even if it is corrupted. This causes all sorts of
"fun things" to happen.

To which I have the following observations/suggestions:

- Timeshift should not mount and attempt to back up to corrupted
filesystems.
- Timeshift should ensure that its behaviour does not cause updatedb to be
run on the filesystem it has mounted. Perhaps by a filter being added to
updatedb, I don't know?
- Because I think mounting filesystems silently like that is the
unintuitive behaviour that lead to it. Updatedb is just doing what it says on
the tin.
/var/log/kern.log:Jan 10 20:47:09 marius kernel: [ 363.671082] EXT4-fs error
(device dm-4): ext4_lookup:1703: inode #7086099: comm updatedb.mlocat: deleted
inode referenced: 7119161
/var/log/kern.log.1:Jan 9 14:00:02 marius kernel: [ 379.513273] EXT4-fs error
(device dm-4): ext4_lookup:1703: inode #5505033: comm timeshift: deleted inode
referenced: 9178184
   - Also, use of corrupted filesystems exacerbates corruption, furthermore (I
think?) the use of hard links by timeshift for space saving makes the fsck
problems to fix it again exponentially worse due to 'duplicate reference'
errors etc.

And the following indirectly related suggestions for documentation etc:

   - Shouldn't documentation be abundandly clear timeshift WILL NOT guard
against hardware failures? (RTFM?).
   - Lack of NFS support put me in this situation. Understandable but what
remote protocols (if any) Will work? iSCSI? Some documentation on that would be
good?
   - An rsync type backup to a subdirectory should not preclude the partition
from being used for anything else, but timeshift's behaviour appears to
indicate it *does* preclude that?
   - I find timeshift's (IIRC) default exclusion of /home frankly bizarre and
unintuitive? Perhaps there should be an install-time dialogue to ask if you
want this to happen?

PS. Apologies this is a bit rough and ready (and indeed probably
warrants multiple bugs), but I wanted to finally get this bug filed
today as I'd been dealing with the partition that was victim to this
issue again (thankfully the fsck didn't take as long as I feared to get
through manually, but data loss is still a possibility, TBC). As you can
tell from the timestamps below it's already taken me a long time to get
to it, and I'm only doing it now way past bed time when already tired.

[Bug 1797932] Re: Upgrade doesn't respect proprietary driver selection

2018-10-15 Thread Kev Bowring
@adconrad - ack. Just a comment - This time there was less than a month
between installing this bionic instance, doing the sru test and then
reverting - so I had at least some recollection of what went on. If it
had been 3 years - I'd have no chance and would wonder what was going
on. I guess I'd always assumed that reverting uninstalled - I knew it
didn't remove the package(s) though.

[Bug 1797932] [NEW] Upgrade doesn't respect proprietary driver selection

2018-10-15 Thread Kev Bowring
Public bug reported:

Upgraded Bionic to Cosmic with iso from 13/10.

Prior to upgrading was using the nouveau driver.

Had previously installed nvidia to test a recent SRU fix. Once I had
tested the fix I had gone back to additional drivers to revert to
nouveau. Attached 2 screenshots from during the b-c upgrade and post
upgrade - I've now got nvidia installed once more.

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Kev Bowring
Note:

sda - copying 26Gb to sdc and sdd - This task failed with 11Gb being
copied to sdc and 10Gb to sdd

sdc - copying 50Gb to sda - This task completed.

sdd - copying 30Gb to sda - This task completed.

txt to txt.txt kept running seemingly without error (killed thunar and
restarted it - went to relevant folder and the files were still changing
back and forth)

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Kev Bowring
@pgkos:

I've got thunar built with your new patch and the git one from a ppa.

Moving the same files as before I had no crashes.

Then I redid the same test, this time copying the files to 2 seperate
locations on seperate drives.

Thunar crashed.

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Kev Bowring
Been running git thunar with 2 patches (9c6dbb1dae70.patch and
fix_crash.patch)

Hadn't up till now seen any problems previously noted.

However doing the following I have had thunar crash 2 out of 3 times
doing so - 2nd and 3rd times trying to get a backtrace (thunar hung AND
gdb hung doing the second)

Files and folders being moved consisted of 4 folders with 1 sub-folder
and 2 sub-sub folders within that. Total was ~21Gb in 16 iso's.

1 - open origin
2 - open destination in tab
3 - copy folders to destination
4 - delete from origin
5 - move from destination back to origin

at the point where it had moved the final iso it crashed.

Investigating following crash 1 of the 2 sub-sub-folders remained in the
destination folder.

Contents of the backtrace from the second crash when gdb hung:

[Bug 1512120]

2018-06-08 Thread Kev Bowring
Had no luck getting a backtrace I'm afraid.

This is what I've done today.

sda - copying 26Gb to sdc and sdd

sdc - copying 50Gb to sda

sdd - copying 30Gb to sda

sdd - running the txt to txt.txt from comment #32 with a sleep of 0.25

Detached tabs as soon as a task was in progress

I ran this 3 times without a crash.

I then remembered that at some point over the last 2 or 3 days while
I've been testing this I turned off the showing of thumbnails.

I turned that back on and reran the test.

Thunar then crashed.

Whether that is coincidental or not I can't answer.

I've seen Usb's not wanting to unmount/eject. Not seen the error message
- however

I've seen issues with partitions not wanting to unmount.

Further to this bug report - I checked another filemanager (pcmanfm) I
found that to just close - not good. Someone from Lubuntu is looking at
that - they were seeing very slow action after unmounting.

If that is the case - the bug is maybe somewhere else (gvfs perhaps)

I've got backtrace and strace ready for 'this' bug, got the same for
pcmanfm.

Spoken to one if the Xubuntu dev's re this bug.

Checked the following iso's:

Budgie from 12/4 - looks to hang about at a login prompt, then boots to
desktop.
Mate from 13/4 - looks to hang about at a login prompt, then boots to
desktop.

Ubuntu from 9/4 - boots to Try/Install Dialogue

Lubuntu doesn't appear to use that dialogue - choice of try and install
at the first menu for that iso.

Regardless of how it's started - I just get Anmelden and then a
non-functioning dialogue.

[Bug 1763492] [NEW] Update page - Sign In is in German, unable to proceed

2018-04-12 Thread Kev Bowring
Public bug reported:

On a system setup for English, UK English keyboard - Sign In on the
update page is in German not English.

Further - following click on the first Anmelden - I get a dialogue that
seems to get no further.

Can I take it from the second issue that LivePatch is only available to
Ubuntu and not flavours?

[Bug 1761593] Re: Uninstall left nouveau blacklisted

2018-04-06 Thread Kev Bowring
Rechecked this (multiple times)

Using the GUI at Software & Updates>Additional Drivers appears to now
not remove conf files and hence user is left with 640x480px (assume
because of the blacklist file left in /etc/modprobe.d)

If one installs via apt and then purges - the nvidia conf file is
removed and a normal at reboot results.

The same behaviour is seen if installed via Software & Updates and then
removed with apt purge.

Pretty positive this was not previously the case when using the GUI to
install nvidia driver.

Only have 1 card to test against - so possibly only affects nvidia-340.

Notes from testing and some pastebin of terminal logs attached.

** Package changed: nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 (Ubuntu) => software-
properties (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1761593] [NEW] Uninstall left nouveau blacklisted

2018-04-05 Thread Kev Bowring
Public bug reported:

Following a successful install and subsequent use of nvidia-340 -
uninstallation of nvidia via Additional Drivers led to a reboot to a
desktop at 640x480 px.

Investigation found an nvidia created file left on the system
blacklisting nouveau, deleted file and rebooted to normal desktop.

Didn't think about ubuntu-reporting this - can try and replicate and
apport-collect if it's of any use.

** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2018-04-04 Thread Kev Bowring
@ pjotr12345 - the 55numlockx file is supposed to check for this -
perhaps you can test it. You'll need to edit the file to make
ltd=/usr/sbin/laptop-detect ltd=/usr/bin/laptop-detect as that's moved.
