I can confirm that this still happens for me in Debian Sid, thunderbird 52.2.0
The CPU usage goes up quite a bit, actually enough to make the fans kick in.
@zayne.a Can you please provide a bit more detail in how you do that? I tried
to googling, without much luck.

@Tim - To be fair, Ubuntu LTS without the hwe-edge is perfectly stable.
However, it is true that all this process was a bit disappointing, and I
ended up moving to debian sid, which seems to be a quite stable
experience so far.

@ddstreet: It seems it's not yet in the xenial-proposed repo yet, but
probably will be there soon-ish I guess?

Title:
kernel BUG at /build/linux
Just to add, even 16.04 LTS is affected by this bug, as if you install
linux-hwe-edge, you install the same bugged kernel. For me, the next
time I wipe my machine, it won't be ubuntu, simply because this type of
bug is unacceptable for a daily driver.

Hope this fix lands soon, since without it, the 4.10 kernel is basically
unusable. Even for 16.04, this bug makes the hwe-edge series pretty much
unusable.

@JaSauders: Their is a fix regarding the kernel 4.8 compatibility in the
xenial-proposed repo. It just have not hit stable yet. The version that
is compatible with 4.8 (hwe) kernel would be 6.30.223.271+bdcom-
0ubuntu1~1.1

I too find it worse with thermald on my Macbook pro. With thermald, the
frequency clipping is too severe, and fans stay below 50%. I think the
fans should still try to increase while cpu frequency clipping is
happening by default.
In my case, without thermald, the CPU temp goes about 5--10 deg hig
I tested the package on my 16.04.1 with linux-hwe-16.04-edge and
confirmed that it works :-)

[SRU] Trouble installing mainline kernel 4.8
As in the comments, indeed 5.1 changes too much. It actually has
regression problems with i3wm (which was fixed in one of the versions,
but now back...)
Also 5.0.32 is at the ppa but not in xenial-proposed. :-)

[SRU] Trouble installing mainline kernel 4.8: virtualbox-dkms 5.0.24
-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.
I agree with robepisc on this that it should work out-of-the-box with
the new kernel. Otherwise, this package would become useless. This bug
honestly should be a blocker for the point release.

It happened again for me as well. Macbook Pro mid/late 2013.
I personally don't think the mainline kernel is a valid option, since it
defeats the purpose of a LTS release.
