Re: [Bug 27463] Re: [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu
That's great! Please make coordination with David sugar and make good use of the Ubuntu 389 server project team PPA. You are also now one of the administrators so should have enough privilege to manipulate the team PPA. After launchpad approves our team email list, communication will be easier. [Bug 27463] Re: [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu
I had a chat with David Sugar (I believe he is a staff member from Canonical). He suggests us to form a dedicated team to set up and maintain the 389 directory server. I have just done that and now we have got a new team called "Ubuntu 389 Directory Server Team" https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-389-directory-server I have added: Timothy Pearson (the Ubuntu packager) David Sugar (Canonical staff(?), also a REVU reviewer) Michele Baldessari (Debian 389 maintainer) to this team. Also this team now has a centralized ppa. So it would be nice if we can port Timothy's ppa to the team ppa, with the correct name changes etc. At the same time, Michele can make sure that this ppa compiles in the Debian testing suite and get 389 accepted in Debian as well. In this way, the team ppa will centralize the development of both Ubuntu and Debian port at once. I have just applied for an email list for this team and it is waiting for approval. David, would you be able to approve the team email list? Cheers, kcleung P.S. Apart from the package name changes, we should transfer the "maintainer" of the packages from Timothy Pearson to "Ubuntu 389 Directory Server Team" so that this project is now managed by the whole team. Quoting Timothy Pearson : > Hi Michele, > > I sent you an Email--hopefully I can help with your packaging. [Bug 27463] Re: [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu
Graeme: The reason why fedora-directory-server_1.2.0-2.dsc doesn't build on your jaunty system is because it relies on many libraries (such as libsvrcore-dev) which are also along Tim's upload. So you really need to test build these libraries first, then after they are built, include Tim's PPA: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kb9vqf/389directoryserver/ubuntu karmic main as an alternate source (OTHERMIRROR in .pbuilderrc) in your jaunty pbuilder environment. Don't worry, Grame, I've tried and it builds perfectly. I hope the REVU team can approve the packages as soon so possible so that it can get into Karmic Alpha 3 REVU: Would you please review the Fedora Directory Server packages as soon as possible so that it can get into Karmic Alpha 3? Ubuntu-Release: Our Fedora Directory Server packages are ready and it would be great to introduce Fedora Directory Server into Karmic. [Bug 27463] Re: [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu
Dear Ubuntu-server and Ubuntu-desktop: If you are also a REVU reviewer, would you please have a quick look at the new Fedora Directory Server package for ubuntu? Blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/fedora-directory-server- inclusion The Fedora Directory server is the most advanced directory server in Linux. Its functionalty supersedes LDAP and makes the sysadmin's life much easier when managing computer resource / access for large networks. The absence of FDS in Ubuntu was (and still is) a major factor discouraging Ubuntu uptake. This package is sitting in REVU and needs urgent review in order to make it to 9.10 (Karmic). It is much better to introduce FDS in Karmic than directly to the next LTS! -- [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/27463 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Tim, FDS 1.2.0 is already out, would you please update your port to 1.2.0? Also the next ubuntu LTS release is 10.4, which Canonical doesn't like introduce new features in, so if we want FDS to make it into the next LTS release, we need to get it into 9.10. Re: [Bug 344642] Re: MIR - include aria2
I mean to have aria2 in the *default installation*, alongside with wget. aria2 supercedes wget because it allows multithreaded segmented downloads, which can potentially speed up download by 5-10 times. And the size of aria2 is very small anyway. Yes we install wget by default for scripts, but we should encourage these scripts to be converted to aria2, by installing aria2 *alongside wget* by default. (as mentioned by J Scott Gwin) Quoting Martin Pitt : > Adding a full MB CD for this does not seem adequate to me, and having > it > installed by default would be the only real reason to put it into > main. > We ship wget by default which suits 99% of use cases (for the few > users > who use command line tools for web retrieval in the first place). > > Since wget is also used by a lot of scripts, we probably have to > install > it by default anyway, thus the size impact of aria2 would be even > bigger. > > So again, what is to be gained from having aria2 in main, but not in a > default installation? > > -- > MIR - include aria2 > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344642 > You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber > of the bug. > -- MIR - include aria2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344642 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 344642] Re: MIR - include aria2
1. Availability: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/a/aria2/ for all architectures 2. Rationale: Aria2 supports multithreaded segmented download, thus greatly speed up download. Also it has support for http(s), ftp and bittorrent protocol and allow downloading of a file using multiple protocols at the same time http://aria2.sourceforge.net/ aria2 actually supercedes wget and users should be encourage to use aria2 instead of wget. by including aria2 into main, we can encourage users to use aria2 instead of wget. 3. Security no CVE or secunia entries found for aria2 no binaries run at root or suid/sgids, no daemons Network activity: download of the above protocol only download data, but does not process files 4. QA package always work out of the box - no debconf questions asked - no significant bugs in debian or ubuntu (other than "no IPv6 support") - upstream updates approximately eveery 6 month-1 year - good debianand ubuntu support - the universe package was automatically ported from debian 5. [Bug 299224] [NEW] [needs-packaging] package Nexenta kernel as a multiverse alternative
Public bug reported: Dtrace is a very powerful tool in profiling performance for applications across the user and kernel space, yet its CDDL license is incompartible to the Linux GPL license, thus cannot be included in the Linux kernel and as a result, I cannot use dtrace without switching from Ununtu to one of the OS under Sun. (Systemtap is at this stage cannot do what I want, so it is not yet a real alternative) Therefore we should package the kernel of Nexenta. Nexenta is a Ubuntu- based distribution that uses the SunOS kernel. However the compiler of Nexenta is too old (gcc 4.0). We should package the Nexenta SunOS kernel (I think CDDL license) as a multiverse package and compile this kernel with whatever toolchain currently used Ubuntu. Then users can feel free to use dtrace (and zfs etc) without needing to switch distro ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [needs-packaging] package Nexenta kernel as a multiverse alternative https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299224 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 253185] [NEW] should backport OpenMP 3.0 to gcc-4.3.1 for Intrepid
Hi, I am now trying to navigate the gcc sourcecode. Is the openmp-3.0 stuff built into gfortran, gcc and g++, outside the libgomp subdirectory? So when I try to merge openmp stuff into gcc-4.3.1 source file, which part of the current gcc svn should I look at? I am a bit lost Obviously the the current trunk is 4.4 and I shouldn't merge everything at the trunk to our gcc-4.3 source. Alternatively, I can use gcc-snapshot. By definition, it is a snapshot of the trunk (future 4.4). Am I correct? If I use this snapshot and compile my own programs, then if my programs links to other libraries (standard libraries as well as some specific libraries), do I have to recompile ALL these libraries using gcc-snapshot as well? This is my initial motivation for thinking about backporting openmp 3.0 to gcc-4.3.1 Kai-Cheung Quoting Matthias Klose <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Leung, Kai-Cheung schrieb: > > However how easy / difficult if we merge openmp-3.0 into ubuntu > intrepid > > gcc-4.3.1 without using redhat diff? > > yoe, not me ;) I didn't look how difficult it is, but given our > feature freeze > date approaching, you have to be quick. Moreover, the most recent konqueror-kde4 and systemsettings-kde4 have already fixed the problems by including the missing dependent core library packages. ** Changed in: kubuntu-kde4-meta (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- many libraries and programs in KDE4 missing - should include the metapackage "kde4" as dependency https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 205418] [NEW] many libraries and programs in KDE4 missing - should include the metapackage "kde4" as dependency
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kubuntu-kde4-desktop After installing Kubuntu-kde4 beta from livecd (and in fact on the livecd as well), I found that many programs are missing. Also in many menus, konqueror complains that many shared libraries are missing. and I fixed it by installing the basic kde4 packages included in the metapackages "kde4" The liveCD at the current stage looks unusable and scares beginner away. To solve this problem, the metapackage "kde4" should *definitely* be included as a dependency of kubuntu-kde4-desktop so that it will work out-of-the-box. ** Affects: kubuntu-kde4-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- many libraries and programs in KDE4 missing - should include the metapackage "kde4" as dependency https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks a lot for uploading the 0.4.14-1ubuntu2, it now works perfectly. In Konqueror 4.0.2, the right click button on some fields has a "select IM" menu which allow me to specify scim. However many other KDE4 apps such as Kate and Kwrite and even some fields in some webpages in Konqueror does not allow me to select IM and I can therefore cannot use Chinese input. [Bug 194509] [NEW] should include icedtea-java7-jre as an alternative dependency to allow inclusion and building into purely free distribution such as gobuntu
Public bug reported: At this stage, jabref depends on the non-free sun-java, which is in multiverse and prevents jabref to be built on a completely-free system, thus cannot be included by default in ubuntu, or at least the Linux latex metapackage. Now I have included icedtea-java7-jre as an alternative dependency. I have also included icedtea-java7-jdk as the build-dependency of jabref. I have read your email list and realized that there are some resistance in our group to change this situation, citing that this file is derived from Debian and debian does not have icedtea etc. However in my opinion, if we want jabref to be built and installed by default (which I think it should) and therefore be visible to everyone who uses ubuntu / kubuntu / xubuntu, we have to take the initiative and switch to the now- free icedtea environment. I have tested my patch and it both builds and runs perfectly on my xubuntu hardy alpha 4 laptop. ** Affects: jabref (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Assignee: Emmet Hikory (persia) Status: In Progress -- should include icedtea-java7-jre as an alternative dependency to allow inclusion and building into purely free distribution such as gobuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194509 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 194509] Re: should include icedtea-java7-jre as an alternative dependency to allow inclusion and building into purely free distribution such as gobuntu
Yes, icedtea *IS* the free JRE you talked about and yes, icedtea is *not* in non-free / multiverse. So for the time being (for hardy) would you please please please *ignore* what happens in debian and use my patch to set jabref to be built on icedtea-java7-jdk (I've already tested it and it works perfectly). Then we can move jabref *out* of the multiverse section and then quickly persuade the maintainers of the metapackage texlive and texlive-latex3 to include jabref into their dependencies (or at least recommended package) Otherwise *no-one* will know your package and use jabref. By the way, although icedtea is not yet in main, it is already in universe and it is therefore 100% free (in Debian/gobuntu standard) and in my opinion we really should switch to it *now*.
