[Bug 1254085] Re: ssh fails to connect to VPN host - hangs at 'expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_REPLY'

2015-09-24 Thread Luke J Militello
Has there been any recent updates on this? I have a network setup with
tunnels between Cisco routers as the egress points for each remote site
and am having the same problems when attempting to SSH from a host
inside of one site to the other. Again, MTU related. I hope there is a
permanent fix in the works as it is cumbersome to have to change the MTU
of each individual machine.

[Bug 1254085] Re: ssh fails to connect to VPN host - hangs at 'expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_REPLY'

2015-09-24 Thread Luke J Militello
Since the DF bit is set and PMTUD is being disobeyed, I discovered that
MSS is obeyed. Therefore, I resolved my problems by doing the overhead
math and setting the MSS adjust parameter on the LAN facing interfaces
of my routers. This workaround is definitely more scalable than
changing the system MTU on all my machines.

[Bug 1200235] Re: forcedeth autoneg for 100M-FD fails

this issue no longer plagues me.

[Bug 1200235] Re: forcedeth autoneg for 100M-FD fails

2014-10-09 Thread Luke J Militello
I'm having a similar issue running 12.04 with the Trusty hardware
enablement stack; kernel v3.13. I have the MCP51 controller and get
random protocol flaps even with the physical link still up. This causes
problems as I have an NFS auto mounted home directory. My only
workaround has been to spawn a root shell on tty1 and reboot. In
comment #6, when you say reset, are you referring to bouncing via
ifconfig or reloading forcedeth? The next time this happens to me, I
will try both and see what happens unless anyone else can comment on
this issue with a workaround.

[Bug 991642] [NEW] NTP peers stuck in INIT when using the BCM4313 wl kernel module in 12.04

2012-04-29 Thread Luke J Militello
Public bug reported:

I'm unsure if the root cause of this problem is within the kernel module
or NTP itself. However, using the same 'ntp.conf' over a wired
connection, it works as it is supposed to. When using the config over
the wireless, all peers are stuck in INIT. Changing servers does
nothing, everything I have tried yields the same result. I am, however,
able to use ntpdate with servers that are stuck in INIT in ntpd any
they work just fine. Using ntptrace on the same servers work as well.
In short, over wireless, I have not been able to get any server to get
past INIT in ntpd (both IPv4 and IPv6) but, using the same servers
with ntpdate, ntptrace, etc. work just fine. Everything works just as
expected over wired with no problems.

[Bug 870874] Re: LDAP user with automounted nfs homedir cannot login

2011-11-28 Thread Luke J Militello
I can also confirm the presence of this bug. I have been running the
same LDAP and NFS servers/setups since 2008. My LDAP and NFS servers
are running 8.04 and I have never had this problem until using 11.10 as
a client.  This is also a fresh install and the posted workaround works;
however, I chose to just move the script out of the directory altogether
and save a backup copy in root's home directory for the time being. I
believe this bug should be marked as medium to high importance as it
hinders the ability for any production level networks to function
properly that require the use of LDAP and NFS for roaming profiles.
Thus prohibiting the use of the latest Ubuntu for use in corporate
networks.

[Bug 794698] Re: hardy custom binary kernels have incorrect version reported in /proc/version_signature

2011-08-06 Thread Luke J Militello
Not sure if this is related or if I am doing something wrong, but this
looks like it is also present in Lucid. I built a custom kernel to add
PPS support. The first version went well, however re-building with
newer (or older) source from the Git repos yields
'/proc/version_signature' to lie.

My first build was with 2.6.32-33.66; version sig is correct, was also running
native 2.6.32-33.66 at the time.
The next was with 2.6.32-33.72; version sig still says 2.6.32-33.66, running
2.6.32-33.66 w/PPS patch at the time.
Last test was with 2.6.32-28.55; version sig still says 2.6.32-33.66, running
2.6.32-33.72 w/PPS patch at the time.

Tried on two systems...any one have any ideas why this is happening?
The kernels work fine otherwise. Thanks.

[Bug 611330] Re: ssh hangs after login when using broadcom wifi

2010-11-27 Thread Luke J Militello
I'm having this same problem using the 'wl.ko' module for an Asus 1015PN

In order to get SSH working at all, I first have to remove the module

Then I connect via a wired connection and SSH works. If I leave the

[Bug 621509] Re: mysqld randomly causes system to not respond to commands

2010-09-25 Thread Luke J Militello
Clint, I appreciate your assistance with this but I am sorry to say that
I believe I've wasted your time.

I did some intensive digging on this and discovered that all signs point
to a hardware issue on one of the SCSI buses. MySQL appeared to be the
trigger; with the most disk writes/reads. It looks as if a hard drive
might be going south.

I receive a fatal error message when attempting to run OpenBoot tests on
the SCSI bus. Which, in retrospect, makes sense as to why occasionally
I would experience a hardware hang on reboots every now and again as
well as why a hard boot seems to be the only way to recover.

Either way, my new system will be resolving these errors.

Again, I appreciate your prompt responses and I apologize for wasting
your time.

This ticket is null and void as pertaining to mysql-5.1.

[Bug 621509] Re: mysqld randomly causes system to not respond to commands

2010-09-20 Thread Luke J Militello
Clint, the last time this happened, I watched the system attempt to
reboot when issued from command line via console. It appears the reboot
sequence hangs on attempting to halt mysqld. As far as I can tell, I
belive something in conjuction with Cacti and MySQL is causing this
problem. It seems to happen when Cacti is still waiting for a response
from a busy client it is monitoring and then the poller fires up another
check while the one prior is still waiting. Once enough of these get
backed up, it does something to cause mysqld to go rogue and that's when
my problems start. I might also add that I have spine running with
Cacti which was not a default package for 8.04. Thus, I pulled down
spine from the 8.10 respositories as well as all the necessary
dependencies. I fear this might be the root cause. Either way, I am
planning on replacing this system all together with a new one, at which
time it will run 10.04. So in short, I believe something I did might be
causing this. Once I port my configs over to the new system, I shall
see if the problem follows.

[Bug 425160] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in glXBindTexImageEXT()

2010-08-24 Thread Luke J Militello
Sadly, I just had a crash. :(

Although, it is very rare as compared to before. In fact this was the
only time I moved the mouse to wake it up. Every other time has been
via keyboard. Perhaps, once again, mouse movement has something to do
with it. I will test this out over the next few weeks.

[Bug 621509] [NEW] mysqld randomly causes system to not respond to commands

2010-08-20 Thread Luke J Militello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server

Once in a great while, my system becomes unresponsive to basic commands.
This includes background commands such as anything run under cron and
even syslog. I can still ssh to the machine, however any system level
commands fail to run, even reboot. A hard reboot is the only why to
recover. I have narrowed it down to this process which I cannot even
kill with init or kill -9.

mysql 4589 1.3 0.6 134960 26744 ?Sl Aug13 133:16
/usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql
--pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-external-locking
--port=3306 --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

Some of the things that stop running are...

 * Postfix will no longer send email.
 * Nagios logs will not update.
 * Cacti stops polling SNMP queries.
 * Cron jobs stop running.
 * Syslog stops logging.
 * Reboot fails to reboot the machine.
 * Init fails to start/restart/stop any binary.

Due to the nature of this partial hang, I cannot supply any further
information in part to the fact syslog stops logging.

I am unsure if this is in fact an SQL issue, but so far all signs point
me there.

My system is a Sun Enterprise 420R running Hardy 8.04.4; 4 UltraSparc II
(BlackBird) CPU's; 4GB of RAM; and kernel version 2.6.24-28.73 (pending
a reload to 2.6.24-28.75 via usn-974-1). Any help in figuring out what
happens and why it happens so few, far, and in between is greatly
appreciated.

2010-07-13 Thread Luke J Militello
I hate sounding like a broken record, down talking the community and the
last thing I want to do is sound like an @$$hole, but this is sort of
what I wanted to here. That this IS confirmed as an issue with NVidia
and not and issue with compiz itself. If that is the case, that's all
someone had to say. Wish I would have gotten a straight answer like
this months ago. Guess I'll just keep updating NVidia drivers until,
hopefully, one fixes it. I greatly appreciate your reply and for taking
the time to explain it. Thanks! :)

[Bug 425160] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in glXBindTexImageEXT()

2010-07-05 Thread Luke J Militello
You shouldn't have to revert to 32-bit or opt not to install a package
to get it to function properly. Although, your efforts will help in
locating where the problem is; the bottom line is someone needs to
acknowledge this and fix it. Someone obviously wrote the bad code and
needs to take ownership and fix it. I'm not trying to down talk anyone
here as this is all open source and created based on people donating
their time and their expertise, but I have been plagued by this problem
since the release of Karmic. And since it has been confirmed by others
in Lucid (an LTS), I would think someone would want to help us resolve
this issue.

On a personal note, I think Ubuntu is getting to far ahead of itself.
In the recent releases, I believe there has been far too many new things
added (including new bugs) and not enough fixing of the existing
problems. This is taking away from what Ubuntu was originally promised
to be, a user-friendly rock-solid operating system. I'm almost to the
point to where I might switch to back Debian. To date, I believe Hardy
is, was, and always will be the best Ubuntu release unless things start
to change.

it works fine now. However, I believe there is still and underlying

[Bug 574961] Re: OpenID fails to allow access to Ubuntu websites

2010-05-07 Thread Luke J Militello
Hi Anthony,

Basically anything under: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/*

Upon login, I am prompted to continue with Open ID as cookies have saved
said information. I am then presented with the confirmation page asking
me to allow my email, userid, etc. to be used by wiki.ubuntu.com. I
then click yes and then in a few seconds get redirected to create a new
user name.

The only links I click are the Log In/Register links in the upper
right hand corner of page via wiki.ubuntu.com.

I do not receive any time outs of any type.

Hope this helps.

Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is the place for this, but I cannot login to any Ubuntu
site using OpenID. Whenever I try, I always get the error that the
username is in use. I do as it says and create a new username with the
password field blank, however the next time I try to login with my
original name or the new name I created previously (which worked), it
says both are already in use. Thus, I have to create a new username
every time.

Jeremy, is there anything you would like me to do in the mean time?
Like test a different kernel or similar?

[Bug 569610] Re: Kernel unaligned access at TPC causing network/system to become slow and/or unresponsive

2010-05-01 Thread Luke J Militello
I did some searching and found these two entries in some kernel change
logs. I have no idea if it helps any but I figured it couldn't hurt to
ask...

 ~ ChangeLog-2.6.28 ~

 11696 commit 33cf71cee14743185305c61625c4544885055733
 11697 Author: Petr Tesarik ptesa...@suse.cz
 11698 Date: Fri Nov 21 16:42:58 2008 -0800
 11699
11700 tcp: Do not use TSO/GSO when there is urgent data
 11701
 11702 This patch fixes http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12014
 11703
11704 Since most (if not all) implementations of TSO and even the
in-kernel
11705 software GSO do not update the urgent pointer when splitting a large
11706 segment, it is necessary to turn off TSO/GSO for all outgoing
traffic
11707 with the URG pointer set.
 11708
11709 Looking at tcp_current_mss (and the preceding comment) I even think
11710 this was the original intention. However, this approach is
insufficient,
11711 because TSO/GSO is turned off only for newly created frames, not for
11712 frames which were already pending at the arrival of a message with
11713 MSG_OOB set. These frames were created when TSO/GSO was enabled,
11714 so they may be large, and they will have the urgent pointer set
 11715  in tcp_transmit_skb().
 11716
11717 With this patch, such large packets will be fragmented again before
11718 going to the transmit routine.
 11719
11720 As a side note, at least the following NICs are known to screw up
11721 the urgent pointer in the TCP header when doing TSO:
 11722
 11723 Intel 82566MM (PCI ID 8086:1049)
 11724 Intel 82566DC (PCI ID 8086:104b)
 11725 Intel 82541GI (PCI ID 8086:1076)

168537  net: speedup dst_release()
168538
168539 During tbench/oprofile sessions, I found that dst_release() was in
third position.
168540
168541 CPU: Core 2, speed 2999.68 MHz (estimated)
168542 Counted CPU_CLK_UNHALTED events (Clock cycles when not halted) with

168553 86531 1.6133 tcp_transmit_skb
168554
168555 Of course, all CPUS fight on the dst_entry associated with 127.0.0.1
168556
168557 Instead of first checking the refcount value, then decrement it,
168558 we use atomic_dec_return() to help CPU to make the right memory
transaction
168559 (ie getting the cache line in exclusive mode)
168560
168561 dst_release() is now at the fifth position, and tbench a litle bit
faster ;)

168563 CPU: Core 2, speed 3000.1 MHz (estimated)

Also, marking this In Progress as I do not want LP Janitor to wipe it
out. I will need a bit of guidance on how to proceed seeing as I can
not simply install a deb package for the upstream kernel as I am using a
Sparc port. If someone could tell me which upstream version to try and
where to find the proper Ubuntu source with the Ubuntu kernel config
files, I have no problem compiling it and testing it out for you.

Oh and this is also a headless server install / no GUI.

As for the Apport command, how shall I go about running that so I don't

I read Apport is not enabled on stable releases by default. I've never
used it before either.

[Bug 569610] Re: Kernel unaligned access at TPC causing network/system to become slow and/or unresponsive

2010-04-28 Thread Luke J Militello
Thanks for the quick response, Jeremy. Unfortunately, I cannot test the
latest development release image as this is a production system.
However, I can test the latest upstream kernel for you. I might also
add the current kernel I am running is 2.6.24-27.69. I poked around the
kernel upstream site and was wondering which kernel you would like me to
try.

I'm guessing ... 2.6.34-999.201004261005 (daily/current)

As I don't see any recent build of mainline 2.6.24.6 (2.6.24-27.69).

Either way, it looks as I may have to compile it as there is no
sparc64-smp deb package.

Also, I have no real way to replicate this issue as it just starts
appearing all of a sudden. I only caught it when my system became
sluggish after a while. I'll have to watch the logs to catch it in
action. When I do, shall I run the command you posted above?

Thanks again.

[Bug 381517] Re: Cannot disable console blanking in /etc/kbd/config

2010-04-27 Thread Luke J Militello
Yes, I know this. What I was getting at is you cannot simply run the
command in a root shell since once you close the shell (aka logout) the
overrides get lost. You have to allow init to parse the command in
from 'rc.local' at boot time in order for it to stick. :)

[Bug 431091] Re: libstdc++5 removal breaks non-ubuntu applications

2010-04-26 Thread Luke J Militello
The majority decision here is actually the proper one to take. At some
point in time, for all software, a decision has to be made when to deem
a package no longer supported it favor of its successor. I realize this
causes problems for some, however the individual packages that depend
upon said package in question should be re-compiled and re-released.
Two options to solve this are; 1) download source and and compile
yourself using libstdc++6. 2) File a bug with the developer of said
packages that still depend upon libstdc++5.

[Bug 569610] [NEW] Kernel unaligned access at TPC causing network/system to become slow and/or unresponsive

[Bug 495121] Re: Compiz crashes on unlocking screensaver

2010-04-18 Thread Luke J Militello
Ok, so Lucid is almost out which means Karmic is 1/3 through its life
cycle...and still no movement on this. I'm starting to lose faith in
this 18 months of support thing... Not, trying to get on anyone's bad
side, but it is very frustrating when you are plagued by a problem such
as this, go through all the processes of reporting it and don't get any
sort of response or assistance in a possible cause, workaround or
solution. :(

[Bug 381517] Re: Cannot disable console blanking in /etc/kbd/config

2010-03-07 Thread Luke J Militello
Here is a workaround I found on the Ubuntu forums. Credit goes to Dr
Small. I have confirmed this workaround works with Karmic and Lucid,
however the problem is still present in Hardy even after applying Dr.
Small's workaround. I don't know about Intrepid or Jaunty though.

2010-02-26 Thread Luke J Militello
Now that this problem has been brought to the correct personnel, is it
possible to get some assistance with this? I have been plagued by this
ever since we got the bug fixed for the screensaver not starting by
itself after time out (#411350). If this will be or has been corrected
for Lucid it would be nice to know because I'll just upgrade the
necessary packages from the Lucid repositories. Thanks in advance!

possible, a few others should try this and see what their results are.

Nizar, doesn't help. All I get is just my desktop image, all my windows
go away. I still have to logout and log back in to remedy it. Also,
this bug only now shows itself because of this bug, #411350, being
fixed. Is there any debug commands I can run to assist in a fix?
Although not a major concern, this is rather frustrating.

2009-12-30 Thread Luke J Militello
I'm good with that. Since we have a patch and now have an idea of what
the root cause maybe, if we choose to pursue this issue it will be in a
package that dvd::rip depends on rather than in dvd::rip itself. Thanks

[Bug 495121] Re: Compiz crashes on unlocking screensaver

2009-12-30 Thread Luke J Militello
I can also confirm this bug. I have noticed compiz.real crashes with a
segfault in libglcore.so while system is under load with the screensaver
active. Judging from timestamps within the logs, it appears the crash
happens while the screensaver is active rather that upon unlocking it.
Again, I only notice this when the system is under load while the
screensaver is active.

Key log info line...

[Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic

2009-12-29 Thread Luke J Militello
So I did a rip of a unencrypted disc and it worked 100% fine -- no
errors at all. Jörn, your patch helps in that we do not have to re-
start dvd::rip. But after finding that an unencrypted disc works, this
leads me to think you may be on to something about the TOC, CSS and the
number of frames. By having this work with an unencrypted disc I am now
wondering if this maybe an issue with libdvdcss? That or what you were
saying about possible new methods of encryption on a disc. Regardless,
I am happy to report with the patch to toss up the warning, I have not
yet had any problems what so ever transcoding and backing up discs! :)

Black Trenchcoat, try this...

dpkg -l | grep execflow wget

/libevent-execflow-perl_0.64-0ubuntu1_all.deb sudo dpkg -i libevent-

You should see v0.63 installed before hand and v0.64 afterwords. Note,
a restart of dvd::rip is necessary to effect changes.
