Yes, it would be great to know when Update Manager will offer that
fix/upgrade to 66.0.4.

It is somewhat (a little) ironic that Ubuntu and derivatives users will
be the last to get this fixed: Windozers et al. are already sorted.

[Bug 1570141] Re: Can't drop privileges for downloading as file '/var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial/andale32.exe' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permi

2016-11-18 Thread MP
$ sudo chown -R _apt:root
/var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial/
(note the addition of the -R flag)

in the top line should address the need to remove all files from partial
(and maybe even the FAILED files), as _apt should have access to remove
or overwrite those files.

I'm not sure why you would have to reinstall update-notifier-common more
than once though, assuming all rights are appropriately in place. Maybe
your internet connection timed out or checksums didn't match properly in
the downloaded packages? Glad you got it working though.

encountered this today. Resulted in an "information available" window opening
that appears forever unsatisfied ("run this action now" button doesn't make it
go away, even after applying the fix at bottom)
Information available dialogue is as follows:
Failure to download extra data files
The following packages requested additional data downloads after package
installation, but the data could not be downloaded or could not be processed.
ttf-mscorefonts-installer
The download will be attempted again later, or you can try the download again
now. Running this command requires an active Internet connection.

The following steps succeeded and installed the troublesome
ttf-mscorefonts-installer:

$ sudo chown _apt:root /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-
downloads/partial/

$ sudo rm /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-
downloads/partial/*.FAILED

$ sudo apt install --reinstall update-notifier-common

runs to completion, final 2 lines =

All done, no errors.
All fonts downloaded and installed.

[Bug 1007230] Re: gimp usually crashes after saving file, independent seemingly of picture format

2014-05-08 Thread MP
Export in 2.8 crashed the same way as Save As in 2.6 for PNG (for me)
until I changed my display manager.

So I guess not all GTK_IS_TREE_MODEL (tree_model)' failed errors are
equal. But I'm glad we both have a working GIMP again :)

Again, this was fixed (in my case) by

rm ~/.Xauthority
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm #select lightdm, rather than gdm, etc
echo -e /usr/sbin/lightdm | sudo tee /etc/X11/default-display-manager #this

[Bug 1087920] Re: gimp crashes after save as

2014-05-07 Thread MP
As I just posted on #1048657 , I had this crash bug in 2.6 and 2.8. It
had apparently been caused by an inadvertent substitution of my .X
display manager. This substitution also caused shell scripts running as
root (on system startup) to fail .X related tasks due to a bad MIT magic
cookie and and a lack of proper authorization (gdm was changing the
XAUTHORITY cookie directory for my main login at every reboot, so the
root user couldn't link to that cookie)

In any case
sudo apt-get install --reinstall lightdm unity-greeter
rm ~/.Xresources
rm ~/.Xauthority #without this (and possibly the one above) you may have
difficulty logging in to your primary user account
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm #select lightdm, rather than gdm, etc
echo -e /usr/sbin/lightdm | sudo tee /etc/X11/default-display-manager #this
may have been redundant

[Bug 1048657] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 / Gimp - Consistent crash after saving file

2014-05-06 Thread MP
I had the same GTK_IS_TREE_MODEL message in 2.6 (i don't remember
gimp_wire_read being part of my problem)
in 2.8 I had gimp-2.8 crashed with SIGSEGV in completion_match_func
both were immediately after Save As (2.6) or Export As (2.8) a PNG input file
as a PNG (with a new name)

It seems that my issue may have been related to my Xauthority system.
For some reason, my login screen had been replaced with gdm and lightdm,
although installed, was not default. Reinstalling lightdm and
reconfiguring it while wiping out my .Xauthority file seems to have
cured my woes. Now 2.8 works like a charm.

Before I cleared out my /home/username/.Xauthority I had some problems
logging in as my default user, so you may want to have a spare account
to log into.

[Bug 1207229] [NEW] highlight background of calc cell hides/crashes unity-2D dock and gnome panel

2013-08-01 Thread MP
Public bug reported:

When highlighting a cell in localc, using current selected background
color is fine, but altering the selection to another color has recently

[Bug 1136110] Re: USB Audio Codec choppy playback

2013-06-08 Thread mp
Thank you all - looking forward to playing music again with the new
kernel.

If anyone could specify how to use (apply) the patch:

fix some mistakes in ehci-hcd's split transaction scheduler:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1136110/+attachment/3685174/+files
/ehci-split-bugs

... before compiling, then that would be really cool, as I have not been
successful in doing so.

[Bug 1187376] [NEW] Problem with Ubuntu 13.04

2013-06-04 Thread Prabhath MP
Public bug reported:

Hi Team,

I have a problem with my Ubuntu 13.04.

All was well until I updated some Service Pack and Advanced System Care
application for the Windows XP Operating System on the same computer.

I had stopped using Windows XP after liking Ubuntu 13.04 so much.

Then, for some reason I thought of logging into XP just to ensure that
everything was well.

However after those updates Ubuntu 13.04 has got corrupted.

I am not a technically familiar person so attaching photos I captured
(It actually does not allow me to do anything post that screen). I have
to manually restart the computer. Again after logging in it only stays
for a minute or two. Then it crashes.

Please advice how I should be proceeding with the troubleshooting.

I tried:
sudo apt-get upgate
sudo apt-get upgrade -d
sudo apt-get autoclean

Also, I tried the recovery option however it does not help.

Please help me.

Sincerely,
Prabhath MP

Bangalore, India

Thank you for the quick reply.

I'm currently in office. I'll try to run the command at home later

If I run the command and if it is successful how do I copy the results

Please advice.

How do I run this from terminal and which one should I select of these.

I tried to log in through recovery mode 3.8 kern if I'm not wrong (the top most
visible). It has logged me in for about 15 minutes now. Is there any way I can
resolve just by downloading the required plugins/software from terminal?
Could you please help me with the command?

Thank you very much for your help.

Thanks Jonathan ( is it Jonathan french or english.. I'm from Québec,
Canada so both language is ok for me )

My card is a Geforce 7600 gs Nvidia and the drivers that I've install
is the current-updated (285.05.09)

So you say that this version of drivers is the problem?

[Bug 773149] [NEW] top panel drops slightly in left side (unity AND classic)

2011-04-29 Thread mp
Public bug reported:

The top panel drops towards the left side. See attached screenshot, in
which you can see that in the left hand side there is approx. 2-3
millimetre space (of black colour) between the top of the panel and the
top of the screen, whereas in the right hand side there is - as there
should be - less than one millimetre or almost nothing.

I am running a LIVE-CD and it makes no difference whether it is Unity or
Classic. I created another user, logged out and logged back in again in
Ubuntu Classic mode - the result is the same.

[Bug 748010] [NEW] Accessibility icon at login screen is that x against a black background

2011-04-01 Thread Rookie-mp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

What I mean to say is that the icon used for universal access at login
is not shown, instead replaced with that X against a black background
thing. It's kind of annoying.

** Affects: gvfs (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2011-02-03 Thread mp
!! - Confirmed in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Exaile 0.3.2.0 - only difference
is that the error message now appears embedded in the main interface -
with a Close button - rather than as a separate window.

I am not playing from library, but a playlist made up of files added via
the file browser.
