[Bug 1749283] Re: configured stats_temp_directory does not get created after reboot

2019-06-03 Thread Mario Splivalo
I agree - the postgresql-common should not be touched, nor there is a need to
create an SRU for it.
However, resource-agents should be fixed, and only for Xenial and Bionic. But,
I felt it was 'cleaner' to do it in a separate bug, LP: #1762492.

So, this bug should be marked "Won'f Fix" for postgresql-common (again,
based on what Cristoph said in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=890427#10).

For resource-agents part, I'm not sure if it should be completely
removed from this bug, or just marked 'Invalid'. That part is actually
duplicate of LP: #1762492. Unless you have objections I'll continue
resource-agents part there.

P.S. You are correct, the postgresql-common patch was never applied here
- I just created a debdiff, waiting for upstream patch to be applied,
thinking that the proper way to solve this issue was fixing postsgresql-
common.

So, to make it clear - postgresql-common is not to be fixed (there is
nothing to be fixed), and this bug should be abandoned (as Debian did).
resource-agents needs to be fixed, and that's being worked on in LP:
#1762492. Is that good?

[Bug 1813182] Re: sshuttle fails on loading modules on UbuntuMATE 18.04

2019-06-02 Thread Mario Splivalo
@Norbert, hi! This actually isn't a sshuttle bug, but a UbuntuMATE bug -
shuttle in Ubuntu/Kubuntu works normally - something that UbuntuMATE is
bringing up to the table breaks python dependencies and sshuttle doesn't
work.

[Bug 1749283] Re: configured stats_temp_directory does not get created after reboot

2019-05-31 Thread Mario Splivalo
@Christian, I've uploaded test pacakages to this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~mariosplivalo/+archive/ubuntu/lp1762492

It looks like resource-agents was erroneously added to this bug - the
end effect is the same, but this bug deals with postgres-common issue.
As the proposed patch for this bug was rejected in upstream
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=890427#10), and as
this indeed is the resource-agents issue I had created a bug that deals
esp with that: LP: #1762492.

I'll proceed with SRU there, if that's all right.

[Bug 1682181] Re: Move executables to /usr/local/pgsql/bin/

2019-05-30 Thread Mario Splivalo
As per LSB and FHS
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard)
/usr/local/ directory structure is used for locally (manually) installed
files (which you might do, for instance, if you install postgres from
source).

Putting package specific binaries in /usr/bin is a standard practice not
followed just by Debian and Ubuntu.

[Bug 1823850] Re: wsrep_slave_threads >1 causes foreign key constraint violations

2019-05-13 Thread Mario Splivalo
Hi, all.

So, just to leave my comment here:

5.6.37-26.21-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 <- xenial, ubuntu archives - this version
fails rally tests, that is, bug LP: #1692745 still applies to xenial.

5.6.43-28.32 <- this version has LP: #1692745 fixed. I am currently
testing to see if wsrep_slave_threads can be safely set to more than 1
on that version too. I'll update this bug with more info as soon as I
have ti.

[Bug 1826791] [NEW] stress-ng cpu tests run longer than configured timeout

2019-04-28 Thread Mario Splivalo
Public bug reported:

I am experiencing long test runs on bionic and later series, on a NUMA
machines (that is, on machines that have more than one CPU on the
motherboard).

I discovered this while I was running MAAS stress-ng-cpu tests which
started timing out, on NUMA machines, when I changed commissioning
series to bionic (this is related bug: LP: #1826789).

I was running stress-ng as MAAS runs it, like this:

stress-ng --aggressive -a 0 --class cpu,cpu-cache --ignite-cpu -log-
brief --metrics-brief --times --tz --verify --timeout 1h

Maas actually runs the test for 12 hours, but the issue is visible even
with shorter test runs.

The above command on xenial, regardless of NUMA/non-NUMA machine,
completes within 60 minutes.

But on bionic and later series, on NUMA machines, the tests takes up to 70
minutes, and on disco (with kernel 5) it takes cca 88 minutes for the test to
complete.
On non-NUMA machines (that is, single CPU on the motherboard), the tests
complete within 60 minutes, add 20-30 seconds on that, regardless of the series.

I was thinking that this might be normal behavior on bionic and later
kernels (4.15 and above), but then I installed Centos7 on the test NUMA
machine, and upgraded kernel to v5.0, and compiled latest version of
stress-ng (same as on disco) - the test completed within 60 minutes,
same as on xenial.

[Bug 1823850] Re: wsrep_slave_threads >1 causes foreign key constraint violations

2019-04-10 Thread Mario Splivalo
Hi, Trent.

Is this bug related:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/percona-xtradb-cluster/+bug/1692745

I remembered hitting this earlier on 5.6, and was not able to reproduce
it on 5.7, but it should, since then, be fixed.

It especially happens when there is network latency between PXC units.
Running specific rally tests yielded the issue usually somewhere between
20 minutes and 3 hours into the test.

But, as seen above, that issue has been fixed. I'll try to re-do the
testing and confirm that.

[Bug 1762492] [NEW] pgsql resource agent should check for stats_temp_directory

2018-04-09 Thread Mario Splivalo
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * Default postgres installation in Ubuntu (and Debian) configures
stats_temp_directory inside /var/run/postgresql. However, this directory is not
created after reboot. Usually this directory is created by pg_ctlcluster, which
is a pg_ctl wraper called by systemd/upstart. However postgres resource agent
is not using pg_ctlcluster when starting postgres, it calls pg_ctl directly,
which won't recreate missing directories.
This will prevent resource agent to properly start postgres.

 * This bug is already fixed in upstream: https://github.com/ClusterLabs
/resource-agents/pull/1102/

 * This SRU cherrypicks the commit from the upstream - the commit checks
if configured stats directory exists, and if it does not it tries to
create it.

It looks like this is getting fixed in the resource agents in upstream:

https://github.com/ClusterLabs/resource-agents/pull/1102

So we might wait a bit to see if upstream will accept this change. If
so, it will be merged in Debian and I'll create a SRU against resource-
agents package in ubuntu.

In most cases this is not a problem as systemd starts postgres via
pg_ctlcluster, a "multiversion/cluster aware pg_ctl wrapper", and
pg_ctlcluster will create missing directories before starting postgres.

But in cases where systemd is not starting postgres this is a problem.
Specifically, when postgres is controlled by pacemaker (using postgres resource
agent for pacemaker) it is started using pg_ctl wrapper. pg_ctl won't create
missing directories and therefore postgres fails to start.

The simplest solution for this issue is to have systemd recreate missing
directories via /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/postgresql.conf file.

Currently only /var/run/postgresql and /var/log/postgresql are created
using systemd-tmpfiles.

[Bug 1721546] Re: max open files limit prevents max_connections over 214 on systemd

2018-02-12 Thread Mario Splivalo
That is better thatn what it is now, but! What is the rationale behind not
letting systemd limit the number of open files?
The limit exists in MySQL anyways, and for mysql administrator this is just an
additional option that needs to be changed. I also imagine most of MySQL admins
will set LimitNOFILE to Infinity anyways, and control open-files-limit.

So, +1 on setting LimitNOFile to 5000, but with suggestion to setting it
to INFINITY.

[Bug 1740892] Re: corosync upgrade on 2018-01-02 caused pacemaker to fail

2018-01-08 Thread Mario Splivalo
Hi, David. This was not induced by the SRU from bug 1739033, as this
issue existed before.

I just tried installing previous version of corosync, and when I
stop/start corosync, pacemaker dies, and needs to be restarted.

As dpkg, when upgrading packages, first stops the service,
copies/extracts new files, and then starts the service, the package
upgrade actually induced pacemaker brokenes.

I remember this always being an issue - each time you stop/start
corosync you need to restart pacemaker too.

[Bug 1721546] Re: max open files limit prevents max_connections over 214 on systemd

2017-10-12 Thread Mario Splivalo
This can be easily circumvented manually by creating a systemd unit
override file for mysql service.

One should create a file, named
"/etc/systemd/system/mysql.service.d/limits.conf", with this contents
(just two lines):

[Service]
LimitNOFILE=infinity

This fix is now implemented in mysql juju charm:

[Bug 1721546] [NEW] max open files limit prevents max_connections over 214 on systemd

2017-10-05 Thread Mario Splivalo
Public bug reported:

With the default mysql-server installation on systemd versions of Ubuntu
(xenial and above) setting max_connections to more than 214 will not
work, due to systemd imposed limits:

root@juju-c2777d-default-1:~# grep max_connections
/etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld_settings_charm.cnf
max_connections = 5500

root@juju-c2777d-default-1:~# grep max_connections /var/log/mysql/error.log
2017-10-05T12:41:16.958726Z 0 [Warning] Changed limits: max_connections: 214
(requested 5500)
2017-10-05T12:41:19.198391Z 0 [Warning] Changed limits: max_connections: 214
(requested 5500)

root@juju-c2777d-default-1:~# grep open_files /var/log/mysql/error.log
2017-10-05T12:41:11.824199Z 0 [Warning] Changed limits: max_open_files: 1024
(requested 5000)
2017-10-05T12:41:16.958668Z 0 [Warning] Changed limits: max_open_files: 1024

2017-10-05T12:41:19.198342Z 0 [Warning] Changed limits: max_open_files: 1024
(requested 27500)

As can be seen, mysql tries to increase the open files limit to 27500, but due
to systemd imposed limitation it fails to do so, and then it selects maximum
possible number of connections, based on open files limit.

This was the problem with default setups with pre-systemd installs, but upstart
allowed mysqld to change the limit of open files before mysqld drops privileges
from root to mysql system user.
Even before that, on sysV init, there was a wrapper, mysqld_safe, which run as
root, used ulimit to change the open files limit and then started mysqld as
mysql user.

Would it make sense to ship mysql-server packages with mysql.service unit files
so that there is no limit for open files, or so that open files limit is
substantially higher than 1024?

This was all discussed when Ubuntu 15.10 came out, for mysql-5.6, in bug
LP: #1434758, but I am still bringing this up for more recent mysql
versions.

[Bug 1366997] Re: Duplicate entry error for primary key following cluster size change

2017-06-23 Thread Mario Splivalo
Hello, Ɓukasz!

I have verified that package which is in trusty-proposed fixes the
issue.

I merely repeated the test case explained here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/percona-xtradb-
cluster-5.5/+bug/1366997/comments/12, but instead of using my personal
PPA i used trusty-proposed pocket:

1. I used juju to install a 3 node PXC (Percona Xtradb Cluster): juju deploy
cs:trusty/percona-cluster -n3

2. I created the test database and the test table in it:
mysql> CREATE DATABASE pktest;
mysql> CREATE TABLE pktest.t1 (id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT, datafield
VARCHAR(20));

3. I created a 'ubuntu' user which is able to connect to all the databases from
any of the hosts:
mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO ubuntu@'%';

4. From the separate node I run this:
$> for i in {1..20}; do (yes "INSERT INTO t1 (datafield) VALUES ('mario');" |
mysql -u ubuntu -h 10.0.0.10 pktest) & done

While the INSERTs where running I restarted one of the nodes - the
primary key violation occurred instantly.

5. I upgraded my PXC cluster, running this on every node:
# echo 'deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-proposed restricted main
multiverse universe' >> /etc/apt/sources.list
# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade

6. After the cluster was completely upgraded and I confirmed it is running fine
I repeated step (4):
$> for i in {1..20}; do (yes "INSERT INTO t1 (datafield) VALUES ('mario');" |
mysql -u ubuntu -h 10.0.0.10 pktest) & done

While INSERTs were running I restarted one of the nodes. This time no
error occurred and INSERTs kept on going.

>From that I concluded that the package in trusty-proposed fixes the
issue.

[Bug 1657256] Re: Percona crashes when doing a a 'larger' update

2017-06-13 Thread Mario Splivalo
Hi, Brian, Ɓukasz.

I understand; the main reasoning for splitting up the SRU work is so
that trusty version can be released to trusty-updates sooner so that end
users can start using it.

But, I understand the implications of splitting the SRU - I will
continue my work on fixing xenial-and-above, but this will take more
time as percona-5.6 changed quite a bit.

[Bug 1657256] Re: Percona crashes when doing a a 'larger' update

2017-06-01 Thread Mario Splivalo
I have also tested the package under Intel architectures to make sure no
regression is introduced and, indeed, the sysbench test completes
without an error.

Also, there is failed buidl for powerpc architecture, but this was not
introduced by this change - one can check that this has been like this
in previous releases too:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/percona-xtradb-cluster-5.5

If you expand previous versions (14.04.1 and 14.04.2) you can see that the
build was failing for powerpc.

I have verified the package from -proposed, and it indeed fixes the bug.

I first deployed percona-xtradb-cluster-server from trusty-updates:

[Bug 1657256] Re: Percona crashes when doing a a 'larger' update

2017-05-26 Thread Mario Splivalo
I have removed percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6 from this bug as in Trusty we
have percona-xtradb-cluster-5.5, and in xenial (and above) we have
percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6. I've created a separate bug for Percona in
xenial (and above): #1693765.

The reason for separation is to speed up SRU for Trusty as the patch
ready (it is attached to this bug) - the customer can resort to using
Percona on Trusty when this fix lands.

Percona in trusty uses InnoDB 5.5 where in Xenial and above it is Innodb
5.6, with different codebase so the fix for the issue is different.

[Bug 1693765] [NEW] Percona crashes when doing multi-connection update against it (PPC, xenial and above)

2017-05-26 Thread Mario Splivalo
Public bug reported:

percona-xtradb-cluster-server-5.6 will segfault on PPC when there is
multi-user (multi-connection) update against the database.

The installation proceeds without an issue, and running single-
connection sysbench benchmark completes fine. However when number of
connections increase percona will segfault almost immediately.

This is excerpt from the error.log file:

I am attaching the error.log as well as my.cnf to this bug report too.

This bug is similar to Bug #1657256, but not the same. As codebase is
different (percona-xtradb-cluster-server-5.5 uses InnoDB version 5.5,
where this one, percona-xtradb-cluster-server-5.6 uses InnoDB version
5.6).

This bug was created to separate SRU effort as fix for percona-xtradb-
cluster-server-5.5 (in Trusty) is ready, and this one will require a bit
more effort.

I'm trying to set up percona-xtradb-cluster-5.5 on PPC machine. While
the package installs fine, as soon as I run sysbench oltp becnhmark
against it, Percona dies (even when I start the benchmark with just one
  connection).

I can also crash mysql manually, by updating the sbtest table (which is
  created by the sysbench utility):

  mysql> update sbtest set pad = 'mario1' limit 100;
ERROR 2013 (HY000): Lost connection to MySQL server during query

Sometimes I need to repeat this update (with different values for 'pad'
field) few times. This happens regardless of whether I run the UPDATE
  inside the transaction or not.

Rafael!

I have built percona on ppc against your debdiff and the issue is gone.

I just concluded my testing - having hammered percona on ppc (and on
amd64) for 6+ hours with sysbench yielded no errors.

I will get on doing this on xenial too now.

Hello, Rafael.

Thank you for the swift debdiff. Unfortunately, percona is still
crashing with the same assertion. I'm attaching the error.log file, as
well as the core dumped (in case you need it).

I was able to reproduce this with percona-xtradb-cluster-server 5.6 from
xenial too, on the same architecture (again inside xenial lxc
container).

I'm attaching the error.log for percona-5.6 too here, as the assertion
is different.

[Bug 1034392] Re: download very slow

2016-11-09 Thread Mario Splivalo
Hi.

Is just the 'apt-get update' slow, or is getting the packages slow too?

apt-cacher-ng won't cache index files, so each time you do 'apt-get
update' it will actually connect to upstream to see what has changed
there.

[Bug 1631972] Re: Searching messages by arbitrary headers sometimes doesn't work

2016-10-17 Thread Mario Splivalo
This is the 'bug' in the upstream, it seems that when Thunderbird is
configured NOT to fetch messages from Imap folders by default, adding
new headers to search by won't work. One has to unsubscribe and then re-
subscribe again to the particular folder (so that TB re-downloads all
the headers) for the search to work.

Sometimes it is enough to just repair the folder in question, but I
haven't figured out why on occasion this won't work.

[Bug 1631972] [NEW] Searching messages by arbitrary headers sometimes doesn't work

2016-10-10 Thread Mario Splivalo
Public bug reported:

I have a folder with emails from Launchpad regarding Launchpad bug. All
of those emails have, among others, this two headers:

X-Launchpad-Bug-Reporter
X-Launchpad-Bug-Commenters

I added both of those fields as a custom fields inside Thunderbird's
'Customized' headers (in the Search window).

I've got over 10k emails in that folder, and all of the emails contain
both those headers, and a lot of them contain single letter 'a' as a
header content.

When I create a search that looks like this:

X-Launchpad-Bug-Commenters contains "a"

Thunderbird returns almost all emails.

But, when I create a search that looks like this:

X-Launchpad-Bug-Reporter contains "a"

no emails are returned, although there is a lot of emails whose "X
-Launchpad-Bug-Reporter" contains an 'a'.

This is Thunderbird in trusty:

[Bug 1570678] Re: mysqld got signal 11 during setting up root password on package installation on ppc64el

2016-05-21 Thread Mario Splivalo
I can confirm this - I fixed the pagesize do 8K and built for ppc64el,
package installed ok, no signal 11.

Also, I built percona for amd64, fixing pagesize to 64K - experienced
the same issue.

[Bug 776999] Re: [Lenovo W520] laptop freezes on ACPI-related actions

2016-03-10 Thread Mario Splivalo
I case anyone runs into this later in time:

I just got W520 and moved my Trusty installation from T520. Had various
issues, mostly explained above. Upgraded to nvidia-352, upgraded to
linux-image-generic-lts-wily (linux 4.2.0), problems persisted.

Then I just disabled VT-d in BIOS, and all the problems are gone. Didn't
need to supply any special kernel boot parameters (my
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line holds only 'verbose' in it).

I am running BIOS v1.30.

[Bug 1382774] Re: Postgresql installation for MAAS fails on locales missing language packs

2016-02-04 Thread Mario Splivalo
I'm only able to replicate this when ssh sends over my LC_*, so I end up
on a server not having the locale I'm using on my client.

Weather this is postgres package issue or openssh-client package issue I
do not know.

But this is easily circumvented by commenting out "SendEnv LANG LC_*" in
/etc/ssh/ssh_config on your local workstation.

[Bug 1380747] Re: SST on IPv6 fails for xtrabackup-v2

2015-09-29 Thread Mario Splivalo
To clear some possible confusion - this bag is, actually, invalid. When
I first opened it i wasn't aware of [sst] option in the config file for
percona-xtradb-cluster.

So, to make xtrabackup-v2 plugin actually use ipv6 when doing sst, this
has to be added to my.cnf:

[sst]
sockopt=,pf=ip6

So, this is actually a documentation issue, as tagged by Miguel.

[Bug 1483325] Re: mount -t overlayfs misinforms when nonexisting directories are provided

2015-08-10 Thread Mario Splivalo
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Consider the directory structure like this:

  root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> ls -al
  total 20
  drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 .
  drwxrwxrwt 9 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 ..
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 lower
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 mounting
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 upper

Mounting upper over lower on mounting mount point works just fine:

  root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> mount -t overlayfs myoverlay -o
lowerdir=lower,upperdir=upper mounting/
  root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> df -Th mounting/
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
  myoverlay overlayfs 219G 94G 114G 46% /tmp/ofs/mounting
  root@MIKE /tmp/ofs>

However if the directory name is misspelled (that is, we're providing
wrong directory), the error message is misleading:

  32 root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> mount -t overlayfs myoverlay -o
lowerdir=IAMWRONG,upperdir=upper mounting/
mount: special device myoverlay does not exist

I'm running this on Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS, using 3.13.0-61-generic kernel.

- I'm not sure if this fits under 'linux' package, but I can't seem to be
- able to find 'mount' package in Launchpad.

[Bug 1483325] [NEW] mount -t overlayfs misinforms when nonexisting directories are provided

2015-08-10 Thread Mario Splivalo
Public bug reported:

Consider the directory structure like this:

root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> ls -al
total 20
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 .
drwxrwxrwt 9 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 lower
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 mounting
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 10 18:09 upper

Mounting upper over lower on mounting mount point works just fine:

root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> mount -t overlayfs myoverlay -o
lowerdir=lower,upperdir=upper mounting/
root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> df -Th mounting/
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
myoverlay overlayfs 219G 94G 114G 46% /tmp/ofs/mounting
root@MIKE /tmp/ofs>

However if the directory name is misspelled (that is, we're providing
wrong directory), the error message is misleading:

32 root@MIKE /tmp/ofs> mount -t overlayfs myoverlay -o
lowerdir=IAMWRONG,upperdir=upper mounting/
mount: special device myoverlay does not exist

I'm running this on Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS, using 3.13.0-61-generic kernel.

I'm not sure if this fits under 'linux' package, but I can't seem to be
able to find 'mount' package in Launchpad.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
