Why was this set invalid? The change in
/etc/modprobe.d/audio_powersave.conf seems more of a work-around than a
fix.

[Bug 1860929] Re: Should include a /usr/bin/python symlink unless..

2020-01-29 Thread Mark Foster
Is this a written policy / guidance or just something you came up with
on the fly?

https://blogs.gnome.org/mcatanzaro/2018/02/16/on-python-shebangs/ has a
good discussion of this issue and even suggests using python2.7 (as
opposed to python2)

[Bug 1448727] [NEW] Update dnstop to version 20140915

2015-04-26 Thread Mark Foster
Public bug reported:

A newer release is available at
http://dns.measurement-factory.com/tools/dnstop/src/dnstop-20140915.tar.gz

Debian version is also (stuck) at 20120611-2
https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=dnstopsearchon=namessuite=allsection=all

Concise list of changes since that version
(Ref: http://dns.measurement-factory.com/tools/dnstop/src/CHANGES)

2014/09/12 Duane Wessels

Added 'new-gtlds' filter, which includes only queries for names
ending with one of the new (2013/2014) generic TLDs. This may
be useful to find hosts/servers using internal names which may
collide with new gTLDs once they become active. If you use
short (not fully qualified) names internally you may be uknownlying
relying on root (or other) name servers to return NXDOMAIN for
them. If so, you're gonna have a bad time.

Along with this new feature, TLD lists are now hashed in the
code for faster lookups.

2012/11/30 Duane Wessels

Added more entries to the table of known query type names (HINFO,
AFSDB, PX, SSHFP, NSEC3, NSEC3PARAM, TLSA, DLV).

2012/10/15 Duane Wessels

The 'refused' filter only works on responses, which are not
processed by default. Now, if the 'refused' filter is specified,
dnstop will automatically process responses and ignore queries.

[Bug 944040] Re: Remmina refuses to connect after Precise Upgrade

2012-10-02 Thread Mark Foster
I've been having no end of problems with Remmina - intermittantly -
though I did notice that changing to an FQDN worked well (thanks for
that one). I see this as a regression - what about home LAN's that
don't have FQDN for hostnames? I've been forced to install
xtightvncviewer and grdesktop as alternates despite having grown quite
fond of Remmina since being introduced to it with 12.04.

[Bug 984552] Re: iwlwifi intermittently losing connectivity

2012-05-08 Thread Mark Foster
+1. Have been having constant, ongoing issues with wifi dropouts - but
only with 12.04 and only in the last several weeks (did not seem to be a
problem when I was running beta1. Came up later than that).

I have this on two machines, running Xubuntu and Ubuntu respectively,
but both 12.04 and both current/up-to-date.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=805285 suggests it might be
an Intel thing. (see also
http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2359) - if it's
the same thing.

Very hard to work out what's relevant and what's not from my Syslog
(found the redhat link from a search for iwlwifi :03:00.0: fail to
flush all tx fifo queues as one line appearing in my syslog frequently
enough)

The symptom is that I appear to remain associated, but all IP traffic stops,
and a continuous ping shows my local wifi interface IP reporting 'destination
host unreachable' (pinging my default gateway) after a period. It can take
quite a while (if at all) for the wifi association to drop and restart, getting
me comms back. Doing so manually also gets me comms back - for a while.
Over the last 2.5 hours, searching for 'reason=' in my syslog:

[Bug 967857] [NEW] Auto Hide for Panel 2 (Dock style Panel) randomly fails

2012-03-28 Thread Mark Foster
Public bug reported:

I have found some odd behavior with Panel 2 (the 'dock' panel).
On at least two occasions it just disappeared (forced a reboot/restart of X)
and wouldn't appear when I moused in that direction.
One of these occasions it was on the left, Panel 1 at the bottom. I shuffled
things around, moved Panel 1 back to the top, Panel 2 to the bottom. About a
week later, Panel 2 failed to appear again, again forcing a reboot/restart of X.
I opted to leave things top-and-bottom due to having them bottom-and-left
causing issues trying to access the menu button for Panel 1 (Panel 2, despite
not being big enough to need it, would appear when I moved to the left, and sit
infront of the button for Panel 1's menu, making a very small click area
available... I opted to change my user habit instead and go back to something
resembling default layout)

Most recently the issue I had was that Auto-Hide would't work. The
'dock' remained up, and over the top of my status bars and text etc.
Going into Panel Configuration and turning off 'auto hide' would resize
my applications not to sit underneath the panel, but toggling this
wouldn't fix it. Restart/reboot required.

I wondered if the disappearing panel was related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-panel/+bug/53897 .
However the Panel refusing to auto-hide may be a different issue.

Is this a jfs problem? I saw http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4747 and
thought it might be the same issue but perusing the linux kernel source
it appears to have the patch already.

[Bug 619712] Re: keepalived vrrp race condition and fix (versions 1.1.17 and 1.2.0 but perhaps all?)

2010-11-02 Thread Mark Foster
Noting that the original configuration shown looks like a problem. The
prio settings on the MASTER (machine3) are too low. In keepalived,
higher priority wins, so machine1 and machine3 are probably trying to
fight it out. I suggest the situation can be avoided by using state
MASTER on all three machines, or by swapping the priority settings of
machines 1 and 3 so that 3 has prio 250 and 1 has 150.

[Bug 659937] Re: Security Update for Sun Java JRE 6: Update 22

2010-10-15 Thread Mark Foster
(Adding advisory information from @RISK: The Consensus Security Vulnerability
Alert Vol. 9 No. 42)
(2) HIGH: Oracle Java Multiple Vulnerabilities
Affected:
JDK and JRE 6 Update 21 and earlier for Windows, Solaris, and Linux Java SE
JDK 5.0 Update 25 and earlier for Solaris Java SE
SDK 1.4.2_27 and earlier for Solaris Java SE
JDK and JRE 6 Update 21 and earlier for Windows, Solaris and Linux Java for
Business
JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 25 and earlier for Windows, Solaris and Linux Java for
Business
SDK and JRE 1.4.2_27 and earlier for Windows, Solaris and Linux Java for
Business

Description: Oracle has recently released a critical update addressing
multiple security vulnerabilities. According to Oracle, the patch
addresses 29 vulnerabilities, 28 of which could lead to code execution.
Some of these vulnerabilities exist because of flaws in the low-level
implementation of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Although Java is
intended to be type safe, low-level code sometimes writes user-defined
strings to C buffers, giving an attacker the opportunity to overwrite
return addresses and execute code. Vulnerabilities like these allow Java
applets, which start without user interaction when a target navigates
to a malicious site, to execute with the permissions of the Java process
running them. Normally applets run with restricted privileges.

Status: vendor confirmed, updates available

[Bug 597790] [NEW] installer display corruption on ASUS ASMB3-iKVM remote console

2010-06-23 Thread Mark Foster
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Using the Java remote console provided by ASUS ASMB3-iKVM unit.
It displays BIOS, POST and initial install screens fine, but once it gets into
the debian installer screens (red/blue) the display is all messed up. It comes
across as 648x481 and it seems the extra pixel (481 not 480) may be causing the
screen to zag across. Unusable.

I found some vague reference to the problem on ASUS website:
http://support.asus.com/faq/asus-faq.aspx?type=1no=897CAD71-0440-5AE7-32EC-3C4A3CEAB7C7model=ASMB4-iKVMSLanguage=en-us
which indicates the ASPEED vga driver should be used. Well, how does that
happen at install time?

Attaching a screenshot of the display problem.

Please review and decide whether it is something that can/should be fixed.
Thanks.

P.S. This also happens with Debian 5.04 netinst. However booting Debian
with the Graphical Expert mode (which I suppose is akin to
installgui) is a viable workaround.

Tried this (again) on Lucid Beta2 and it gets much further - the grub-install
step does not FAIL like it had before.

However on subsequent boot of the machine it brings up a busybox prompt
as shown in the attachment

Addendum to my last comment... after rebooting from busybox the system
did come up. So it looks as though the grub-install problem is fixed
here.

[Bug 300660] Re: nagios3-common package should not have configuration files named as *-nagios2.cfg

2008-11-21 Thread Mark Foster
I respectfully disagree.

IMO they should not have nagios3 or nagios2 in the path names at all,
instead...
/etc/nagios/conf.d/contacts.cfg
/etc/nagios/conf.d/extinfo.cfg

This matches up with the paths from nagios-plugins and is the better
approach.

Nobody is going to feasibly run nagios2 nagios3 on the same host, and
the nagios-plugins are not using those (version-specific) paths
either... so you end up with a mix of /etc/nagios /etc/nagios3 what
sense does that make?

Please go back to using /etc/nagios/ as the configuration base.
