[Bug 183202] Re: grub fails to install on dell optiplex 320

2013-05-13 Thread Mark Van den Borre
I don't have this system anymore, but
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DellOptiplex320 seems to suggest that the
bootloader installation problem has disappeared with the move to grub2.

You probably want to close this one...

Reopening. Please point me in the right direction if wishlist bugs need

[Bug 34523] Re: geoip localisation suggestions

2008-08-10 Thread Mark Van den Borre
Reopening temporarily. This bug was closed out of the blue, without any
explanation. From my own research afterwards, it turns out it needs to
be moved to brainstorm.ubuntu.com. I'll do that in a minute.

I went to #ubuntu-bugs to ask, and found out Brainstorm now seems to be
the place to file non-trivial wishlist bugs on Ubuntu. That wasn't the
case 2 1/2 years ago when I reported this one. Maybe Ubuntu needs
documentation for triagers on what to with pre-brainstorm wishlist bugs.

I found the triagers in #ubuntu-bugs agreeing that the triager of this
particular bug should at least have communicated better. Closing without
an explanation is not a nice way to treat someone who has taken the
effort to report a bug. Imagine the negative impression had I been a
newcomer to the free software world.

 At least said 'please' :)

 Actually I though this is a good idea and it gets more looked-at on

I must have been on crack not to have noticed the pleas use
brainstorm.ubuntu.com.

 I was the only one cared about your report in 2,5 years
I appreciate that.

 so don't attack me so hard.
I must have been on crack not to have noticed the please use
brainstorm.ubuntu.com. That makes the words please be more
courteous I used rather inappropriate. Still, one could imagine more
encouraging ways of dealing with moving old wishlist bugs to
brainstorm.ubuntu.com. Like, waiting for the reporter to move his bug
to brainstorm, for example. Or tagging it needsinfo, then put the
wishlist bug into brainstorm after x days of no reaction.

Make no mistake. I really appreciate your volunteer contribution to
ubuntu! Thank you for that!

Sincerely,

[Bug 151145] Re: Evince print fails with Postscript driver

[Bug 183202] grub fails to install on dell optiplex 320

Public bug reported:

* environment:
  * dell optiplex 320 desktop
  * ubuntu 7.10 (problem present with both live and alternate cd, apparently
present in previous versions too)
  * needs option hpet=disable to boot
  * suggested diagnostics information from

machines right now)

* problem: grub fails to install

Please tell me what more information you would like me to provide. I
want this bug squashed. Badly.

P.S. I've temporarily worked around these issues by:
  * booting from the alternate cd
  * using the hpet=disable option
  * installing ubuntu, trying but failing to install lilo in the process
  * rebooting the alternate cd in rescue mode
  * chrooting into the installed but unbootable ubuntu setup
  * running liloconfig and lilo
  * rebooting into the installed (and now bootable! woohoo!) ubuntu system

[Bug 173442] cstocs should suggest or depend on libdbd-xbase-perl

2007-12-02 Thread Mark Van den Borre
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cstocs

The dbfcstocs utility from the package cstocs does not work without
the package libdbd-xbase-perl installed. The cstocs package should
probably depend on the libdbd-xbase-perl package.

The Debian upstream package might also contain this bug.

[Bug 159553] applications, places, system not translated

2007-11-02 Thread Mark Van den Borre
Public bug reported:

When I install 7.10, most gnome menu items are localised. Translations
reside in .desktop files in /usr/share/applications.

Applications, Places, System main menu items in the gnome panel on the
other hand are not localised. Translations for these seem to reside in
the respective language packs. They are the most visible menu items on
the desktop.

Having the translations included would offer _a lot_ of extra comfort to
new users who have no connection to the internet when first installing.

[Bug 122133] dapper-feisty regression: synaptics touchpad not properly configured

2007-06-25 Thread Mark Van den Borre
Public bug reported:

On my Dell Latitude D420...

dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg results in attached xorg.conf. I

[Bug 55646] video playback problem on external monitor

2006-08-08 Thread Mark Van den Borre
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

If video (gstreamer, xine,...) playback on a laptop's external monitor
is an important ubuntu use case, the following is an important bug.

On my 2005 iBook G4 (relevant lspci info below) and presumably quite a
few other laptops, it would have been impossible for someone not
intimately familiar with xorg internals to find out how to do video
playback on an external monitor. A novice could never solve this
problem.

* Xv overlay is needed for smooth video playback.
* Xv overlay can only be applied to one monitor at a time.
* The default Dapper xorg.conf gives the xv overlay to the the internal monitor.
* The default result was a black rectangle instead of video playback on the
external monitor, but smooth playback on the internal monitor.

My stopgap solution:
* Install xvattr from universe.
* Move the xv overlay to the external monitor:
  $ xvattr -a XV_SWITCHCRT -v 1

I now have video playback working on the external monitor, and a black
rectangle on the internal one.

The relevant lspci info for my iBook G4:
:00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M9+ 5C63 [Radeon
Mobility 9200 (AGP)] (rev 01)
0001:10:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth 2 PCI

 Workbench is broken on those versions.
