[Bug 561359] Re: Mountall fails following early X server crash
I am reporting a reproducible bug where file systems fail to mount, seeming *triggered* by an early X server crash. The X server crash itself has been reported elsewhere. This report is about the effect on mountall's mounting of file systems. I would appreciate any pointers on how to track this down; as I wrote it is a strange behaviour. ** Changed in: mountall (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- Mountall fails following early X server crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561359 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 521672] Re: Startup in Karmic with unclean filesystems leaves system in a wrong state
Is this behavior really by design? If so, it is a very bad one. By default, the system should wait until all file systems are available before letting the user log in. Otherwise, the user can suffer data loss as follows: 1) Boot with unmounted file systems. The mount points will look like empty directories. 2) The user logs in. 3) Program X starts up and finds that expected data Y is missing. 4) Program X proceeds to perform cleanup or initialization based on data Y having disappeared. Data loss has now already occurred in the case when program X writes to a different file system than where Y is located. For instance, if the home directory was mounted, but not the file system that contains my digital photos, a photo manager will now clear out metadata about the supposedly deleted pictures from its database. Some programs will ask the user first about this, but as is well known the user always answers yes. Otherwise: 5) The missing file system is mounted. 6) Program X keeps writing a clean slate of data in the location of Y, oblivious to the fact that it is now overwriting the real data, which has suddenly reappeared. -- Startup in Karmic with unclean filesystems leaves system in a wrong state https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/521672 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 561359] [NEW] Mountall fails following early X server crash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mountall While trying out various versions of the not-quite-working-yet fglrx driver in Lucid, I get a strange side effect: mounting of one or two file systems consistently fails, whenever I try to boot with X configured to use the broken driver. These are btrfs file systems, if it matters. The whole thing is very strange, but reproducible (with some pain). Could an early X crash somehow backfire at mountall through Plymouth or something and make mounts fail? That, or some even stranger kernel interaction, are the only models I can come up with for what is going on. What logs should I be looking at? (Maybe the new fglrx version released yesterday will actually work, so I may need to get any debug info soon, I guess.) ** Affects: mountall (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Mountall fails following early X server crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561359 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 269851] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard/Mouse dones not work anymore
Confirming this on Lucid. The diNovo worked perfectly up to and including Karmic. Now it is completely dead. I actually thought the radio in the dongle was dead for a long while, until I plugged it into a Mac and it worked right away. I tried pairing the keyboard in Blueman. I press the connect button on the keyboard after which it shows up in the list of devices, and then I try to pair it. No success. The attempt times out. I tried the /etc/default/bluetooth thing. No success. After pairing the dongle and keyboard on the Mac I get the diNovo to work in the bios and in Grub, but as soon as Linux boots up, it nukes the connection completely. This led me to try to uninstall and purge every package that had some shade of blue in it. That did not help. rantI bought this keyboard knowing full well that bluetooth HID has never worked on Linux. That is why I got this clever model that presents itself as a keyboard/mouse rather than trying to do the bluetooth thing: As long as the OS does absolutely nothing everything should be fine. For a while Linux fell for it, and the shiny little keyboard worked, but at this point the penguin has apparently worked up the smarts to break the poor thing. [Bug 449394] Re: Huawei E220 modem unable to connect under Karmic
Still *NOT* working for me. I did the firmware upgrade and also installed the apw10 kernel from here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/446146/comments/162 Still, nineteen times out of twenty, when connecting using network manager, the blue light comes on on the E220 and network manager claims that I am connected. But I can't reach anything through the connection. If I were to guess, I would say that something other than the kernel is at fault here. I have had some success using the KPPP program for connecting, instead of NetworkManager, but I can't yet say if that works consistently. Digikam 1.0.0-beta6 is not yet released. Since this bug is rather serious (it has 25 duplicates in the KDE bug tracker) maybe one should ask the Digikam developers when they plan to release the next beta. If that is going to be a while, backporting the fix (if the appropriate commit can be identified) or even packaging an svn version would hopefully be an improvement over the currently packaged (beta5) version. -- digikam crashes when click on download selected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/454113 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to digikam in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 434599] Re: [kubuntu] filepicker doesn't show pictures / is strange
It is possible to display the graphics files by replacing the filter box contents with *. Most of the time this will not actually let you insert the picture though; the error box Unknown graphic format is displayed after confirming the selection. In my most recent test this happens every time. In previous tests, it seemed that you would get to insert a picture once, the second and subsequent times you got Unknown graphic format. I can confirm the other symptoms reported above. In summary: 1) Excessive times to display the file list 2) Inserting graphics fails with unknown graphic format 3) Graphics files not shown in the dialog There are also some other strange things with this dialog, such as it insisting on opening up in some .kde directory. [Bug 377194] Re: Thinkpad T61 locks up / freezes randomly; no flashing caps lock light, mouse cursor can be moved
I did two more things. I ran Memtest86+ (v. 2.11) repeatedly on the machine, with no errors. Then I tried installing the 2.6.30-rc7 kernel (image-386, headers-all and headers-386) from http://kernel.ubuntu.com /~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30-rc7/) and the freezes and symptoms remain the same as with the Jaunty 2.6.28 kernel. I verified that I am booting the 2.6.30 kernel after installing it. Is there anything else that is kernel-related to try? Could it be the Intel graphics drivers after all? What should I try here? [Bug 377194] [NEW] Thinkpad T61 locks up / freezes randomly; no flashing caps lock light, mouse cursor can be moved
Public bug reported: I was experiencing Bug #300693 (Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock) on a Thinkpad T61. This is on a standard Jaunty 386 generic install, up to date as of 2009-05-16. After installing linux-backports- modules-jaunty, as suggested in the comments to that bug report, the machine still freezes, but slightly differently: the mouse cursor can still be moved and the CapsLock LED is not flashing. Otherwise the machine does not respond, but the SysRq key works. I am reporting these slightly softer freezes separately in this report, as suggested by Jamin W. Collins. I'd be happy to hear suggestions on how to hunt down this bug. [Bug 300693] Re: Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock
I get frequent hard locks on a fully updated Jaunty / T61 too. I suspected the Intel graphics drivers at first, and tried to upgrade to newer versions from the xorg-edgers repository; I used a few of those with no success. I also tried a few of the 2.6.30-rc kernels. All combinations of kernel (Jaunty standard and mainline 2.6.30) and graphics drivers (Jaunty standard and xorg-edgers) give lock ups. Otherwise, my installation is the standard Jaunty. The wireless networking is switched on, but not in use; I use a 3g modem dongle. The lock ups are hard and occur without prior warning: the mouse cursor does not move, and the machine does not respond to any keyboard input. At least in some cases the caps lock light is flashing. Sometimes, but not always, the machine responds to SysRq commands after the lock up. What should I try next? -- Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300693 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 300693] Re: Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock
I installed linux-backports-modules-jaunty (generic) and turned off the wireless network in network manager (this turned off the wireless LED). But a few minutes later the machine hung anyway. I noticed that the wireless LED had turned itself back on! I don't know if that happened right at the moment of the freeze or some time before. This freeze was different than before in that the mouse cursor could still be moved and the CapsLock LED was not flashing. Otherwise the machine did not respond, but the SysRq key worked. In conclusion: 1) The backports-modules package did *not* resolve the problem. 2) *Maybe* the wireless is indicated, since the LED came back on. 3) The problem was not present in Intrepid, but it is there in 2.6.28 and remains in 2.6.30-rc[2-4]. -- Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300693 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 28622] Re: Warning should be displayed when a filesystem is remounted read-only.
This also affects removable media such as USB drives and USB sticks. Since these are brittle devices, with crappy FAT file systems, that often get yanked without unmounting, the problem is fairly common. For example, when this happens: [ 1364.080987] FAT: Filesystem panic (dev sdb1) [ 1364.080990] fat_get_cluster: invalid cluster chain (i_pos 32499) The filesystem is at this point still shown as rw by mount, and nowhere in the UI is there even an indication that the file system is now read only. Many programs (e.g. OpenOffice) will give very non- informative error messages when they try to write to the file system. Others (e.g. mount) give a proper error message, though. Three things should be done: (1) Pop up a notification informing the user of the problem. (2a) Show the file system as read-only in the UI. Maybe remount it as read-only (such that this is reflected by the output of mount) to accomplish this. Hopefully this would also help some apps to give better error messages. (2b) Even better would be if the drive icon could also get an emblem indicating that there is a problem. (3) Offer to remedy the error. fsck -a /dev/sdb1 followed by an rw remount would work in many cases. For a small broken FAT file system such as a USB stick another reasonable option, in many cases, would be to copy the files off the file system, format it and then copy the files back. -- Warning should be displayed when a filesystem is remounted read-only. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/28622 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 205895] Re: [Hardy] Wine 100% cpu usage
I can confirm this bug with a fully updated Hardy as of this moment. It applies to both the Hardy version of Wine and to version 1.0-rc1. Ies4linux is version 2.99.0.1. The bug also applies to all versions of Internet explorer that ies4linux offers. Symptoms: 1) When ie6 is started, CPU usage goes to about 76% for both the wineserver and IEXPLORE.EXE processes (two cores). It does not matter what IE is doing; going to about:blank leaves the CPU usage the same. 2) When I exit IE, the call to wine does not terminate. IEXPLORE.EXE stops using CPU, but instead wineserver goes to 100% CPU usage. The processes wineserver, explorer.exe and IEXPLORE.EXE remain. At this point it is not possible to start a new IE. 3) After doing wineserver -k (with the proper WINEPREFIX), the wineserver terminates, but leaves explorer.exe and IEXPLORE.EXE running, the latter defunct. The call to wine still has not returned. At this point a new IE can be started. 4) It is possible to kill off the two remaining processes, after which everything is fine and the call to wine returns. -- [Hardy] Wine 100% cpu usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205895 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 28326] still present in eisty
This bug is still present in Feisty as per today (xserver-xorg- video-i810 2:1.7.4-0ubuntu1, linux-image-2.6.20-13-lowlatency 2.6.20-13.21). I can go through several suspend/resume cycles with no problem sometimes, but then as soon as an application tries to paint video to the screen there is a crash. The crash does not occur until the video is actually painted to the screen; the video window can be sitting behind other windows on the desktop without causing a crash. Description of a crash with feisty: when I bring the video window forward it is all blue rather than containing any video. Then the screen goes blank and starts to display a moving band of video artifacts towards the bottom of the screen. I can still move the cursor mouse, but the machine does not respond to e.g. ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-backspace, ctrl-alt-delete. There is disk activity. The machine does shut itself down gracefully when I press the power button. I get the following in syslog, the last two messages repeating, indicating, I presume, that kdm repeatedly tries to restart the X server without success: Apr 1 09:04:21 machine kdm[5191]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Apr 1 09:04:22 machine gconfd (user-6570): Exiting Apr 1 09:04:31 machine kdm_greet[27446]: Can't open default user face Apr 1 09:04:37 machine kdm_greet[27446]: Internal error: memory corruption detected -- i810 Xv crashes after suspend - infinite resprawn https://launchpad.net/bugs/28326 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 42387] Re: ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
This was rejected because the original path to get the card into the problematic state was removed in 2.6.20. However, there are other ways to get into this state (card overheating, machine suspending) so the driver still needs to be fixed in 2.6.20. (Note that even rebooting does not help to resolve this.) ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Status: Rejected = Unconfirmed -- ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/42387 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 42387] Re: ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
I can't test this at the moment: The unload/reload trick didn't work. My Knoppix CD, that has previously been successful in waking the device up had gotten damaged from sitting in the drive, so that would not boot. The strange thing is that when I booted with the 2.6.20-lowlatency kernel, udev saw no reason to load the ipw2200 module. When I loaded it manually it reported no errors, but also did nothing. I am hesitant to report this as a bug, because of the uncertain hardware state that I am in, but could someone else please test the ipw2200 module with that kernel? Anyway: Right now I can't get the device up, so therefore I can't test whether I can make it survive a suspend/resume. Does anyone have any dirty tricks up their sleeve on how to get the thing working temporarily, so I can test it? I don't have any Windows... -- ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2 https://launchpad.net/bugs/42387 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 42387] 2.6.20: does not work after suspend
On a DELL D610 I get pretty much the same error as the original reporter did, see below. My card gets into this broken state all the time, notably whenever the machine is suspended, without me having fiddled explicitly with the power state. To recover functionality I have to boot with a different operating system. Sometimes it also works to repeatedly load/unload the ipw2200 module, randomly pressing the Fn-F2 radio kill switch button in between. This is using the latest 2.6.20-13-generic in feisty. Thus, the bug is not moot wrt 2.6.20, but the driver should really be fixed to set the power state properly when loading. Please reopen the bug for 2.6.20; this is a very severe bug for me; if it is not fixed for the feisty release I will have to keep tracking the unstable kernel in the hope that a fix comes along... I assume that I am not alone in this.
