[Bug 1797386] Re: [SRU] OpenSSL 1.1.1 to 18.04 LTS

2018-12-04 Thread Matt Ruffalo
Thank you very much, Dimitri -- I am interested in this also.

I tested that PPA on a test web server running nginx, uwsgi, uwsgi-
plugin-python3, Django 1.11(.16), and a Python 3.6 'pyvenv' virtual
environment using 'psycopg2' to connect to a PostgreSQL 10 server via
the pre-built Python wheel for 'psycopg2_binary' version 2.7.5.

I could immediately connect to nginx over TLS 1.3 without any problems,
and the Qualys SSL Labs scan also reported that all was well with TLS
1.3.

However, the web app under uwsgi crashed (segfaulted) on any request,
with a stack trace at https://pastebin.com/DLGiuKfR

I was relatively surprised that the 'psycopg2_binary' Python wheel
seemed to bundle its own version of libssl-8bb9b3dd.so.1.0.2o -- and it
looks like there's some incompatibility with this build of Python and
OpenSSL 1.1.1. I removed this Python package and installed 'psycopg2'
instead, and saw the same behavior.

I was able to fix this by reinstalling psycopg2 from source with 'pip
install --no-binary=":all:" psycopg2', and now everything works well
with the web app.

I'm not sure how much of a problem this is at this stage, or who has the
responsibility to address it (Ubuntu developers or whoever built the
psycopg2 wheel), but I figured I may as well mention this anyway.

It's great that everything was fine with nginx without any effort on my
part; thanks!

[Bug 1661739] Re: Amarok can no longer play MP3s after gstreamer update

2017-02-06 Thread Matt Ruffalo
Thanks for the attention. I wasn't sure at all which package I should
choose, and Amarok seemed like a decent guess. I don't have a Phonon VLC
backend installed at all; only the gstreamer backend.

The gstreamer package versions I have installed are shown in the apt
log; the following versions allow Amarok to play MP3s, and were
installed on my system prior to that 'apt full-upgrade' run:

gstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 1.8.2-1~ubuntu1
gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.2
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.3
gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.3
gstreamer1.0-x:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.2
libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-0:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.2
libgstreamer-plugins-good1.0-0:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.3
libgstreamer1.0-0:amd64 1.8.2-1~ubuntu1

Those were upgraded to the following versions, some combination of which
breaks Amarok:

gstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.1
gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:amd64 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.1
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:amd64 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.3
gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio:amd64 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.3
gstreamer1.0-x:amd64 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.1
libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-0:amd64 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.1
libgstreamer-plugins-good1.0-0:amd64 1.8.3-1ubuntu0.3
libgstreamer1.0-0:amd64 1.8.3-1~ubuntu0.1

I haven't been able to narrow down exactly which of these 8 packages
is/are responsible. I also have gstreamer 0.10.x packages installed, and
I think those might have been pulled in by Steam, but none of those were
upgraded as part of this 'apt full-upgrade' run.

[Bug 1661739] Re: Amarok can no longer play MP3s after gstreamer update

I was unable to get Amarok working again by manually downgrading
gstreamer packages, so I resorted to reverting my entire root filesystem
to a previous btrfs snapshot.

Public bug reported:

I've been using Kubuntu 16.04 since it was released, and have been using
Amarok to play MP3s without any issues, until yesterday. After
installing some updates:

Amarok can no longer play MP3 files. I ran Amarok with the --debug
command-line argument, and this is what happens when I double-click a
MP3 file in the playlist:

amarok:   BEGIN: void Playlist::Actions::play(const QModelIndex&)
amarok: BEGIN: void Playlist::Actions::play(quint64, bool)
amarok: BEGIN: void EngineController::play(Meta::TrackPtr, uint, bool)

amarok: [EngineController] Just a normal, boring track... :-P
amarok: BEGIN: void EngineController::playUrl(const KUrl&, uint, bool)
amarok: [EngineController] URL: KUrl("redacted path to MP3 file")
"redacted path to MP3 file"
amarok: [EngineController] Offset: 0

amarok: END__: void Playlist::PrettyListView::trackActivated(const
QModelIndex&) [Took: 0s]
amarok: [EngineController] slotTrackLengthChanged( -1 )
amarok: BEGIN: void ProgressWidget::redrawBookmarks(const QString*)
amarok: END__: void ProgressWidget::redrawBookmarks(const QString*) [Took: 0s]
Calling appendChild() on a null node does nothing.

I can play Ogg files without any problems, as I realized when I deleted
my Amarok configuration and restarted it -- the default playlist
contains a sample track in Ogg format.

[Bug 1299499] Re: kwin crashes on desktop startup with wobbly windows enabled

2014-04-04 Thread Matt Ruffalo
I had reverted to a btrfs snapshot once I saw KWin crash, so this
morning I added the PPA and did an aptitude full-upgrade. This updated
my kernel to 3.13.0-22 (as well as ~500MB of other stuff) and I am very
happy to say that KWin is working perfectly.

Thank you very much, Timo!

[Bug 1299499] Re: kwin crashes on desktop startup with wobbly windows enabled

2014-04-01 Thread Matt Ruffalo
Hmm, I guess the answer to (all?) Intel video hardware is no.

I get perfectly consistent KWin crashes on a machine with a Intel
Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c),
even after add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers; aptitude update;
aptitude full-upgrade; reboot.

No crashes on a machine with a Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd
Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) though.

I think this is quite serious, and might deserve more than Medium
importance. The end result if this is that hardware-accelerated graphics
are broken out-of-the-box on (all?) Intel video hardware, 2.5 weeks

[Bug 1205452] Re: Eclipse unusable in Kubuntu Saucy (almost immediate JVM segfault)

2013-08-27 Thread Matt Ruffalo
I followed the JVM's suggestion about creating a core dump, and it's
available at http://giygas.case.edu/kubuntu-saucy-eclipse/core.xz (GPG
signature at http://giygas.case.edu/kubuntu-saucy-eclipse/core.xz.asc).
I'm not sure how useful this is, but I'm guessing that it can't hurt.

[Bug 1205452] Re: Eclipse unusable in Kubuntu Saucy (almost immediate JVM segfault)

2013-08-16 Thread Matt Ruffalo
There have been some recent updates to libglib2.0 (from 2.37.3-1ubuntu2
to 2.37.5-1ubuntu1 that I installed on 2013-08-13) and the openjdk
packages (from 7u25-2.3.12-1ubuntu1 to 7u25-2.3.12-4ubuntu1, installed
today), but Eclipse still causes the JVM to segfault very consistently.
It's very hard to avoid this crash, too; the workspace selection
dialog is the first thing a user sees after installing and running
Eclipse. The net result is that Eclipse is unusable in the current state
of Kubuntu Saucy.

The old JVM dump attachment probably doesn't apply anymore, since the
JVM segfault now occurs at a different address in libgobject-2.0.so.
I've attached a new JVM dump that contains

# C [libgobject-2.0.so.0+0x19908] g_object_get_qdata+0x18

From the Java stack trace, it doesn't seem like this is the JVM's fault.
It looks like the SWT GTK wrappers are calling native code, according to

[Bug 326132] Re: [wishlist] Pinentry does not allow to paste into it, why?!

2013-07-29 Thread Matt Ruffalo
Count me as another person who would like to be able to paste in to
pinentry-qt4.

This is a horrible deliberate usability problem that the upstream
developers seem unwilling to address, and 'Marcus Brinkmann' says in
http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gpa-dev/2010-June/002506.html There is
nothing stopping distributions from doing the same integration work, if
there is demand for it. It appears that distributions like Ubuntu are
reponsible for overriding the upstream behavior.

It looks like OpenSuSE's pinentry-qt4 package is patched to allow
copy/paste, according to http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/opensuse/12.3/i586
/pinentry-qt4-0.8.1-18.1.1.i586.html . The patch seems to be available
at
https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=pinentry-0.8.1-allow_paste_qt4.patchpackage=pinentryproject=openSUSE%3A12.1rev=7a944e43c7904f6e93e24e838652c75d
, which implements Dmitry's comments in #17.

I downloaded pinentry-0.8.1 and patched it according to
http://koospol.nl/cms/index.php/computer/pinentry-qt4-en (I found this
before the OpenSuSE package/patch), and copied the custom pinentry-qt4
to ~/bin. My .gnupg/gpg-agent.conf contains pinentry-program
/home/mruffalo/bin/pinentry-qt4 and I'm now able to paste long random
passwords from KeePassX.

+1 for shipping either patch in the pinentry-qt4 package (and an
equivalent change to the GTK version, if appropriate), since Ubuntu
wouldn't be the first distribution to do so.
