[Bug 1067434] [NEW] Sound output device keeps changing when using headphones
Public bug reported: Recently upgraded to 12.10. Having issues with sound when using headphones plugged into the front ports. Something that doesn't happen when booting to windows - so fairly confident it's an Ubuntu issue. When listening to any sound, music, video etc the sound levels jump up and down and click. If I open "sound" from the settings menu when playing videos or music and viewing the "output" tab I can see "headphone - built-in audio disappear and reappear (very quickly) so I'm guessing the system is jumping back to the "analogue output" and back again which is why the sound volume changes and clicks. Worth noting I never used my headphones when 12.04 was installed so not sure if it's this OS or Ubuntu hates my hardware generally. Booted from live cd (usb) to 12.04 and there wasnt any issue. Anyone seen this before? any advice? Sound is built in to motherboard. I have the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5. My disk eventually failed a month or so ago. Whether it had already started to fail 7 months ago, I have no way of knowing. One would hope that if a disk was reading poorly enough to hang that often that it would have pushed it over one of the SMART thresholds. I have so far: * installed cups * gotten rid of the extra no-printing configuration in my smb.conf * removed the socket options line I'd added * installed samba from source I still get the bug even built from source directly from the v3-5-stable branch of samba's git repo. I'm wondering if the problem is related to a library that samba is linking to since I can't find any mention of this bug online outside of a debian-based distribution. The upstream samba bug report referenced in the above-mentioned possible duplicate hasn't had any activity since the bug was submitted. I'm having this bug in Lucid Server x86_64. The only things I've done
in smb.conf that might be considered different are the "socket options"
line (which I've never heard anyone say causes crashes), and the few
lines that kill print support. I don't have CUPS installed on this
server and I was getting strange hangs during file transfers to windows
machines accompanied by CUPS connection timeout messages in the client
logs. Disabling printing fixed that part.
Everything is up to date except the kernel which is 2.6.32-28-server

Taking Lepe's lead, I am now trying out a 2.6.32-26 kernel built from stock sources straight from kernel.org. I built it using the config from /boot/config-2.6.32-26-generic and the ubuntu kernel-package tools. This way, we can see if perhaps an Ubuntu kernel patch causes the error. So far so good with 2.6.32-24. The problem usually occurs for me during lots of hard drive writes, so I let dd create a 2 GB file of of output from /dev/zero a couple of times, and then once or twice I used /dev/urandom for input. I haven't seen the problem yet. @Lepe That's what is so difficult about this bug. Some people may be getting these message because of a hardware failure. You're getting messages similar to mine, but I have never gotten a kernel panic because of it. I'm having a similar problem on Lucid 2.6.32-25-generic. Mine doesn't always happen; it's kind of random. I have the same symptoms though...a disk write freezes and I get dmesg output like the original post. Is it possible that all this is related to a specific hd controller driver or a certain set of them? I noticed nobody seems to be posting what controller they're using.
