IMPORTANT 1: Please see the WORKAROUND a few lines below.

IMPORTANT 2: Please don't post any me too message; use the Does this
bug affect you? feature you can find a bit above this bug description
  on Launchpad.

IMPORTANT 3: Do not post anything if you haven't read all comments to
verify that your point hasn't been made. If you feel tempted to stop
reading because there are too many messages, that is a strong indicator
that you shouldn't add even more comments. Developers have a tough time
to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please abstain from
  doing that.

  *** WORKAROUND ***
  ---
Install diodon, klipper, glipper, parcellite or xfce4-clipman

*** EXPLANATION OF THE BUG ***
When I copy (Ctrl + C, or right click and Copy) text from somewhere and
after that close the program where it is, the clipboard gets empty.

Steps to reproduce in gedit :
  1. Pick any text field that supports copying, copy some text.
  2. Paste into any other text field.
  3. It works.
  4. Close the source window or program.
  5. Paste now does nothing.

This bug will happen in any application that doesn't comply with the
clipboard specification from FreeDesktop.
  http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/ClipboardManager

There was also previous considerations about improving xserver-xorg
clipboard, which would reduce adaptation work from upstream projects to comply
with the specification.

[Bug 1251178] [NEW] qdbus: could not exec '/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qdbus': No such file or directory

2013-11-14 Thread Mechanical snail
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 13.10 (32-bit)

Package versions:
qtdbus 4:4.8.4+dfsg-0ubuntu18
qtchooser 26-3ubuntu2

Expected behavior:

The `qdbus` program runs.

Actual behavior:

If I run the `qdbus` program, it always crashes:

user@host:~$ qdbus --help
qdbus: could not exec '/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qdbus': No such file or
directory

The `qdbus` executable is actually:

user@host:~$ ls --full-time $(which qdbus)
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 2013-08-07 14:48:40.0 + /usr/bin/qdbus -
qtchooser

Note that `/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt4/bin/qdbus` exists and seems to
work if I invoke it directly.

There's a `qdbus-qt5` package in the universe repository. It was not
pulled in as a dependency, but manually installing it fixes the issue.
Therefore it's either a packaging error or a bug in qtchooser.

This happened when I opened KDE systemsettings's Printer Configuration
after running `sudo service cups stop`. It seems it doesn't handle the
case that the CUPS server isn't running.

[Bug 1208239] [NEW] Update Tanglet to version 1.2.1

2013-08-04 Thread Mechanical snail
Public bug reported:

Latest upstream version is 1.2.1, released 2012-02-01
(http://gottcode.org/tanglet/), but Ubuntu is still using v1.1.1 (over 3
years old), even in Saucy.

This fixes several bugs. In particular, version 1.1.1's dictionary
feature no longer works (since 2011) because it uses the now-
discontinued Google dictionary. Version 1.2.1 switches to Wiktionary to
fix this (https://github.com/gottcode/tanglet/issues/2).

Same thing happens with bzip2:

user@host:/media/DISK$ bzip2 --keep FILE
bzip2: Input file FILE has 1 other link.

I haven't tried gzip since it doesn't have a --keep option, and I don't
want my file deleted.

lzop works as expected.

[Bug 1120870] Re: Bit rot breaking shared library references in packages not rebuilt in new Ubuntu releases

2013-02-14 Thread Mechanical snail
** Description changed:

There is an issue where old package versions are getting released for
newer Ubuntu releases without properly updating the shared-library
references. This causes regressions where a package that worked in
previous versions starts to fail with an error like:

photoprint: error while loading shared libraries: libgutenprint.so.2:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The underlying issue seems to cause reappearing bugs like bug #260849,
where the photoprint package refers to libgutenprint.so.2 (the file in
  current Ubuntu releases is libgutenprint.so.3).

This was discussed in Ask Ubuntu chat:

What we guess is happening is that when a new Ubuntu release appears,
binary packages with no source changes are copied unmodified into the

[Bug 253616] Re: Displays characters from different font when font doesn't contain it

2012-12-30 Thread Mechanical snail
This is called font substitution, and it's ultimately controlled by
fontconfig. I assume that Specimen is using normal GNOME text-rendering
functions and just passing it the chosen font. A character not present
gets automatically substituted with some other font. That's what should
happen for most purposes—but it makes no sense for a font viewer.

2012-11-03 Thread Mechanical snail
Also likely the same issue:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBus#LibreOffice

Quote:

If IBus does load but doesn't see LibreOffice as an input window, add this line
to ~/.bashrc:
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
And then, you need to start ibus with -xim -d, for example, add this line to
~/.xinitrc:
ibus-daemon --xim -d
But the horrible thing is that you need to start LibreOffice in terminal.
If you're using KDE and the above doesn't work, install libreoffice-gnome and
add this line to ~/.xprofile if you don't mind running LibreOffice in GTK2 mode:
export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome
That'll make IBus work with LibreOffice, and you can start LibreOffice from
anywhere -- not just the terminal.

[Bug 494067] Re: Provide better Firefox KDE integration

2012-07-31 Thread Mechanical snail
The bug (lack of KDE integration) was fixed by adding the firefox-
support-kde package, which I think used LD_PRELOAD to make Firefox use
KDE dialogs etc.. However, that package was dropped in Precise and
Quantal (bug #949949), which therefore causes the bug to resurface.

Justification for paper cut: This is a (hopefully) trivially fixable

application of ... Kubuntu because browsing directories in the file

[Bug 1030403] [NEW] Network connected icon looks like a punk with a mullet wearing a hat

2012-07-28 Thread Mechanical snail
Public bug reported:

This is about the tray icon that is shown when the wired network is
connected (screenshot attached) under the Oxygen icon theme (KDE
default).

It's supposed to be a picture of an RJ-45 ethernet connector being
plugged in, which makes sense. However, it looks more like a punk with a
mullet wearing a hat.

The cause of the issue is that as drawn, the cable is drawn being
plugged in *upside-down*, with the grooves (containing the contacts) on
top. Besides being wrong, it leaves space on top in the shape of a hat.

While I have nothing against mullets, the icon should be re-drawn to
avoid user confusion.

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2012-07-17 Thread Mechanical snail
I tried it on some more programs. It affected every KDE program I tried,
including: kcolorchooser (copying from a text box), kwrite, konqueror,
kcalc, okular.

I tried some non-KDE Qt programs, all of which were also affected: vlc,
anki, qsynth, qtoctave.

This makes me suspect it's a KDE and Qt problem, rather than a problem
with these specific apps. I have therefore added KDE core and Qt to the
list of affected projects.

Also, GTK 2 programs: leafpad, synaptic
GTK 3: I am still seeing this with gedit, even though it's supposed to be fixed.

[Bug 1022741] [NEW] Implement HTML5 sandbox attribute for IFRAMEs

2012-07-09 Thread Mechanical snail
Public bug reported:

Firefox should support the HTML 5 sandbox attribute on iframes:

sandbox HTML5 only
If specified as an empty string, this attribute enables extra restrictions
on the content that can appear in the inline frame. The value of the attribute
can be a space-separated list of tokens that lift particular restrictions.
Valid tokens are:

allow-same-origin: Allows the content to be treated as being from the
same origin as the containing document. If this keyword is not used, the
embedded content is treated as being from a unique origin.
allow-top-navigation: Allows the embedded browsing context to navigate
(load) content from the top-level browsing context. If this keyword is not
used, this operation is not allowed.
allow-forms: Allows the embedded browsing context to submit forms. If
this keyword is not used, this operation is not allowed.
allow-scripts: Allows the embedded browsing context to run scripts (but
not create pop-up windows). If this keyword is not used, this operation is not
allowed.

[Bug 1018585] [NEW] Netbeans 7.0 fails to import settings from previous version (missing netbeans.import)

2012-06-27 Thread Mechanical snail
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04
netbeans 7.0.1+dfsg1-4

Precise ships with Netbeans 7.0.1 in the repositories, but the packaging
is still messed up. A missing file prevents it from migrating settings
from version 6.9, giving the error message
java.io.FileNotFoundException:
/usr/share/netbeans/7.0.1/etc/netbeans.import (No such file or

This appears to be a similar packaging problem as in 6.8 (bug #565394,

[Bug 751689] Re: ThinkPads overheat due to slow fans when on 'auto'

2012-04-06 Thread Mechanical snail
I urge everyone experiencing this bug to get their hardware checked
(hopefully under warranty). For me (X201 tablet), having the fan
replaced (and I think thermal paste applied correctly) brought
temperatures down from ≈60°C‒65°C idle and 80°C‒100°C (+shutdown) under
full load, to 60°C under full load.

This is not to deny the existence of the software bug: the combination
of overheating-prone hardware with the slow fan software bug is
producing the obvious effects for at least some of those affected.

[Bug 315710] Re: Linux needs exFAT support

2012-04-06 Thread Mechanical snail
** Description changed:

exFAT. Linux (either the kernel or via FUSE) therefore needs to support this
file system before it becomes common for portable devices and other uses.

formatting removable drives. Linux (either the kernel or via FUSE) therefore
needs to support this file system before it becomes common for portable devices

[Bug 751689] Re: ThinkPads overheat due to slow fans when on 'auto'

2012-02-04 Thread Mechanical snail
I had this problem on Maverick on a ThinkPad X201 tablet (computer
overheating and rebooting), and as a workaround kept my computer
underclocked (using the CPU frequency scaling applet for the GNOME
panel). After using that way for a while (maybe for a few months to a
year), I tried again a few months ago with normal CPU settings. The
rebooting problem was fixed (presumably by some update): the CPU speed
would now be throttled when the computer overheats (kicks in at about 82
degrees C), avoiding a reboot (when it hits 100 degrees). (Of course,
the underlying problem of slow fans remains.)

[Bug 733092] Re: libjpeg compiled without arithmetic coding support

2012-01-12 Thread Mechanical snail
In the US, patents last at most 20 years under current law (and at the
time, I believe it was shorter, 17 years). See
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/35/154.html (the current law), and
page 146 of the old law,
http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/mpep/old/E5R14_L.pdf . If Wikipedia
is to be believed, JPEG's design was complete by 1990, any patents
covering JPEG would either certainly have expired by 2010, probably
earlier, or would be bogus due to prior art.

I believe it's also 20 years in the EU and Japan and most other
countries.

I presume Winrar uses the same (nonstandard) filename encoding for both
input and output. So it can read its own files, but doesn't interoperate
with anything else.

Try opening a Winrar-created tarball in 7-zip on Windows. If 7-zip opens
it, please reopen this bug. (I only tested it on Wine.)
