[Bug 1734887] Re: No caps lock indicator on login screen

2018-05-27 Thread Metta Crawler
18.04 GDM login screen now displays an exclamation mark as a caps lock
indicator.
The older GDM used a different icon but this is sufficient for me.
It is my opinion that this issue has been resolved.

+ Background:

  Filed a bug report as per question:
  https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/662421

  I'm trying to run lm_sensors on my brand new motherboard (Gigabyte
  Technology Co., Ltd. Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming-CF) using the Z370 chipset,
  and according to the author/maintainer of lm_sensors/it87 driver, fan
  controls would be supported by chip it8686.

  Currently such chip is supported only in it87 version
  https://github.com/groeck/it87; unfortunately both Ubuntu's new LTS
  Bionic and Torvalds' repositories have got an outdated version of this
  driver (and possible lm_sensors itself):

  *
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu-bionic.git/tree/drivers/hwmon/it87.c
  * https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/hwmon/it87.c

  Can you please update Bionic (at least) to feature this updated driver?
  Controlling fans speed and other motherboard parameters would be great,
especially on new hardware.

  Thanks!

I'm using the default that comes with 18.04
uname -svr

The same IOMMU=pt

$ grep iommu /etc/default/grub

Fixed 4.14.* on 17.10 (I didn't try the default 4.13.* kernel)
Last tested on 4.14.33-041433-generic (I don't boot 17.10 that often)

  Note that this is from an AMD Ryzen 5 2600G

  Also the BIOS firmware is a beta, but the previous version, which is the
  last so-called stable version is in much worse shape. For instance it
  misidentifies the RAM as having CAS 19 when it's really CAS 16. The beta
  BIOS firmware does the job correctly and shows CAS 16.

[Bug 1759828] [NEW] BUG: Bad page map in process SaveScripts pte:20000000 pmd:56c58a067

2018-03-29 Thread Metta Crawler
Public bug reported:

Note that this is from an AMD Ryzen 5 2600G

Also the BIOS firmware is a beta, but the previous version, which is the
last so-called stable version is in much worse shape. For instance it
misidentifies the RAM as having CAS 19 when it's really CAS 16. The beta
BIOS firmware does the job correctly and shows CAS 16.

[Bug 1730374] Re: NULL pointer dereference during writeback

2018-02-02 Thread Metta Crawler
** Description changed:

+ This could be part of CVE-2016-3070
+
  Happened during dd of 40GB LV:

  $ sudo dd if=/dev/vg0/gentoo of=/dev/vg1/gentoo

  I also used SIGUSR1 on the dd to monitor it occasionally. There was
  other activity at the time as well.

  It appears that an attempt was made to fix this in 4.10
  https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9614353/
  but it is still happening in 4.13

[Bug 1731566] Re: systemd-udevd delays boot for 4+ minutes when an LVM PV is inside an LV

2017-12-13 Thread Metta Crawler
Re: But the inner PV is only for the guest to use - no?

The intent is that the inner PV is only for the guest to use. What has
happened for years and years is that unless you mask using
/etc/lvm/lvm.conf the host will vgscan the inner PV and vgchange it too.
Until 17.10 (possibly 17.04, I skipped that one) this was mostly a
cosmetic issue, now it adds four minutes to the boot time.

[Bug 1731566] Re: systemd-udevd delays boot for 4+ minutes when an LVM PV is inside an LV

2017-12-11 Thread Metta Crawler
** Description changed:

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description:  Ubuntu 17.10
  Release:  17.10

  $ apt-cache policy udev
  udev:
    Installed: 234-2ubuntu12.1
    Candidate: 234-2ubuntu12.1
    Version table:
   *** 234-2ubuntu12.1 500
  500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-updates/main amd64
Packages
  500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-security/main amd64
Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
   234-2ubuntu12 500
  500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/main amd64 Packages

  Expected:

  Ubuntu 17.10 booting up as fast as Ubuntu 16.04

  What happened instead:

  During boot up the system will hang and then a timeout will allow it
  continue. This happens twice.

  The first one occurs right after the network interfaces are renamed. Example:
  [5.160480] e1000e :02:00.0 enp2s0f0: renamed from eth0
  [  121.345255] raid6: sse2x1   gen()  4431 MB/s

  The second one is from /scripts/init-bottom/lvm where 'udevadm --settle'
  is run.

  # we cannot properly synthesize LVM LV change events with udevadm trigger, so
  # if we use LVM, we need to let it finish; otherwise we get missing LV
symlinks
  # (LP #1185394)
  if [ -x /sbin/vgchange ]; then
  udevadm settle --timeout=121 || true
  fi

  Reproducing:

  Where $vg is some existing volume group name:

  lvcreate -n pvtest -L 20m $vg
  pvcreate /dev/$vg/pvtest
  reboot

  Use case:

  KVM/Qemu libvirt VM guest's vda with PV in it stored in host LV.
-
+ This is somewhat involuntary as certain appliance VMs come configured this
way.

[Bug 1728181] Re: systemd-networkd-wait-online waits when devices are unmanaged

2017-11-28 Thread Metta Crawler
I'm not using cloud-init. My network devices are not managed because I disabled
NetworkManager.service shortly after installing 17.10 on bare metal Nov 5, 2017
9:44 AM EDT. I think there were too many fires then and I didn't want to try
to convince NetworkManager to use a bridge. I just lived with the two minute
delay while working on the four minute delay LP 1731566
and the "BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)" LP
1730374 until work on that last issue lead to the two minute delay clearing up
as a side-effect.

[Bug 1730374] Re: NULL pointer dereference during writeback

2017-11-28 Thread Metta Crawler
I was unable to reproduce this on 4.13 until Nov 23 when it happened
again.

This time the logs show that I was handling PDF files via Nautilus which
doesn't imply as much disk I/O as the previous 40G dd did.

__blkdev_put() and writeback_sb_inodes(). Please see the repro patch

[Bug 1731566] [NEW] systemd-udevd delays boot for 4+ minutes when an LVM PV is inside an LV

2017-11-10 Thread Metta Crawler
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10

$ apt-cache policy udev
udev:
  Installed: 234-2ubuntu12.1
  Candidate: 234-2ubuntu12.1
  Version table:
 *** 234-2ubuntu12.1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-updates/main amd64
Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-security/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 234-2ubuntu12 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/main amd64 Packages

Expected:

Ubuntu 17.10 booting up as fast as Ubuntu 16.04

What happened instead:

During boot up the system will hang and then a timeout will allow it
continue. This happens twice.

The first one occurs right after the network interfaces are renamed. Example:
[5.160480] e1000e :02:00.0 enp2s0f0: renamed from eth0
[  121.345255] raid6: sse2x1   gen()  4431 MB/s

The second one is from /scripts/init-bottom/lvm where 'udevadm --settle'
is run.

# we cannot properly synthesize LVM LV change events with udevadm trigger, so
# if we use LVM, we need to let it finish; otherwise we get missing LV symlinks
# (LP #1185394)
if [ -x /sbin/vgchange ]; then
udevadm settle --timeout=121 || true
fi

Reproducing:

Where $vg is some existing volume group name:

lvcreate -n pvtest -L 20m $vg
pvcreate /dev/$vg/pvtest
reboot

Use case:

KVM/Qemu libvirt VM guest's vda with PV in it stored in host LV.

[Bug 1730374] Re: NULL pointer dereference during writeback

2017-11-10 Thread Metta Crawler
I'd love to have time to work on this kernel bug but I have fires all
over the place with 17.10.

I have a dual-boot setup between 16.04 and 17.10.  The 17.10 took over
nine minutes to boot originally. After finding out about
Debian_bug_867368 I got it to boot in over three minutes. It still gets
stuck booting and shutting down in other areas.

[Bug 1730374] [NEW] NULL pointer dereference during writeback

2017-11-06 Thread Metta Crawler
Public bug reported:

Happened during dd of 40GB LV:

$ sudo dd if=/dev/vg0/gentoo of=/dev/vg1/gentoo

I also used SIGUSR1 on the dd to monitor it occasionally. There was
other activity at the time as well.

It appears that an attempt was made to fix this in 4.10
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9614353/
but it is still happening in 4.13

[Bug 1723758] Re: Xorg X11 nouveau video driver for NVIDIA graphics chipsets locks up (hangs)

2017-10-31 Thread Metta Crawler
Xorg crashed after 13 days 20 hours and 28 minutes of running. The root
cause is unknown to me; I can only trace it back to gnome-session-binary
running out of file descriptors and crashing on a SIGSEGV which cascades
until a nouveau driver message about receiving a signal occurs.

I don't know if it's relevant or not that I was running for about a day
with "gconf2:amd64 3.2.6-3ubuntu6" installed and it required a reboot
which I had not yet done.

Start of crash:

Oct 30 22:15:33 lakshmi gnome-session-binary[6021]: WARNING: Failed to receive

Repeats over 6004 times (systemd-journald suppressed excess messages):

$ fgrep -c 'lakshmi gnome-session-binary[6021]: WARNING: Failed to receive

2017-10-23 Thread Metta Crawler
No lock-ups after 6 days of using HWE kernel and Xorg.

This includes the weekend when the activity level is high enough to
usually cause one or more lockups in the same day.

According to the changelog for the hwe deb

apt changelog xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-hwe-16.04
New upstream release
Thu, 09 Mar 2017 11:46:23 +0200

The changelog for the default deb that comes with 16.04
apt changelog xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
... last update on ...
Thu, 03 Mar 2016 15:44:44 +0200

Plus Fedora 26 has the same "nouveau 1.3.1 20120801" version in the
dmesg output. Probably someone did not increment that version message
as part of the 1:1.0.14-0ubuntu1 release.

[Bug 1723758] Re: Xorg X11 nouveau video driver for NVIDIA graphics chipsets locks up (hangs)

2017-10-17 Thread Metta Crawler
To see if this has been fixed in newer versions I am now running after
having installed:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-
core-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-
xorg-input-libinput-hwe-16.04

Try this only at your own risk.

Next I will test especially with google-earth and LibreOffice as they
are involved in a lot of lock-ups.

2017-09-26 Thread Metta Crawler
@pfalcon atop is run at midnight from cron, see the atop manual page for
details. This is why you get "spontaneous" crash dialogs about atop.

@raymii If you are on 16.04 you can fetch the update from Debian Sid.

Add two files:

$ cat /etc/apt/preferences.d/debian-atop
Explanation: This file is for atop pinning
Explanation: See /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-sid.list for debian entries.

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,n=sid
Pin-Priority: -1

Package: atop

$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-sid.list
## Added for atop

[Bug 1318568] Re: grub upgrade fails with lvm on top of dmraid

2015-07-28 Thread Metta Crawler
This Debian wiki page https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid
suggests that in /etc/default/grub
the line:
GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true
must be uncommented.

Has anyone tried that?  Thanks.

[Bug 1397617] Re: iriverter lacks package dependency libswt-cairo-gtk-3-jni

2014-11-30 Thread Metta Crawler
I was going to write a patch for "HEAD" but then I found out that
iriverter doesn't appear ever in Debian and I can't see it in Vivid
while doing causal checking.

The only use I had is that it quickly and easily got me a working
mencoder line like this:

mencoder infile.mp4 -o outfile.h300.avi -ovc xvid -xvidencopts
bitrate=500:max_bframes=0 -oac mp3lame -lameopts mode=0:cbr:br=128 -vf-
add filmdint=io=25000:1 -vf-add scale=220:165,expand=220:176 -vf-add
harddup -ofps 10.0 -srate 44100

I could use that as a starting point.

SOLUTION:
After installing libswt-cairo-gtk-3-jni iriverter worked correctly. So it must

[Bug 1318568] Re: grub upgrade fails with lvm on top of dmraid

2014-06-17 Thread Metta Crawler
@psusi - once you've installed on fake RAID and upgraded successfully a
few time, the effort to convert to Linux software RAID is significant.
I've side-stepped that for now by rebuilding grub 1.99-21ubuntu3.15
(from 12.04) on Ubuntu 14.04 and putting package holds on the resulting
debs. Maybe someday I'll run off lists of installed packages and decide
which ones to re-install, figure out what parts of backups need to be
restored other than the obvious ones like /home, reinstall from scratch,
put all the packages and customizations back and not worry about fake
RAID anymore but for now I'll just putter along.

This isn't the first time grub2 lost the ability to be installed on fake
RAID. On Maverick it was necessary to back-port the grub from Natty to
get working grub-on-fake RAID.

The reason this titlebar menu resize contraption exists is that it is
part of UI accessibility. You can use the keyboard to control the

With a mouse or tracball etc. (not a touchscreen):

1. Right click on the title bar of the window to be resized.
2. A menu will pop up. Choose "resize" from it.
3. The pointer will jump (warp) to the center of the window.
4. Do not click yet. Move the pointer past the edge of the window in the
direction you wish to resize (enlarge).
5. Once the desired resize has been achived then click the mouse or tracball
etc.
