[Bug 655124] Re: Network-manager-openvpn connects but can not be used

2011-09-09 Thread Michael Jonker
I know this is late - but just for clarity this is still not working
100% in Maverick. The fix as mentioned above in disparate places is
easy, and I summarise:

1-Go into Edit connections and highlight your VPN connection.
2-VPN Tab, Advanced and set Use LZO compression to on.
3-OK
4-Ipv4 Settings Tab, Routes and check Use this connection only for
resources on it's network

You should now be good to go. This took me 2 days trying to fix things
server side before I checked it on a Windows box and discovered the
server was 100%.

DOH!!!

It would be good if this worked out of the box as many people are stuck
on 10.10 until Unity settles down.

[Bug 752378] Re: Orca causes OpenOffice / LibreOffice Java to crash

2011-04-08 Thread Michael Jonker
Thanks Luke,

I tried that with the following result:

With debug logging running the system freezes completely at the point of error.
Without debug running the error occurs as per original desription and the
system remains stable.

I have to hard-reset to unlock the system after debug crash. The system
tells me AT SPI registry is not responding.

After restart I check the resultant orca-debug.log file, but it is
empty.

I have uploaded a short video of what is happening here:

[Bug 752378] Re: Orca causes OpenOffice / LibreOffice Java to crash

2011-04-07 Thread Michael Jonker
Yes, libaccess-bridge-java is installed (it was installed all the time)
so this is not the problem.

I did a fresh re-install of Ubuntu 10.10 and the problem still persists.

I have attached the document in question for testing. (I have briefly
tested other docs with similar results)

I checked the document on a Fedora 14 install and the problem does not exist in
that environment.
The only difference is that I am using Metacity for compositing in Fedora and
Compiz in Ubuntu.

(In case you are wondering why I bother with compositing - I am setting
up Orca as part of an adult literacy program, so it is not being used
only for visual impairment)

Turning off Compiz in Ubuntu (ie. no compositing at all) makes a small
difference - I can select an image once or twice before Writer crashes.
With Compiz on it will crash immediately when an image is selected.

In case it matters - I have Gnome Panels turned off as well and Avant
Window Navigator used as the panel manager.

I will test Fedora/Compiz in a while and report back.

I have reported this bug at LibreOffice as well:

[Bug 752378] [NEW] Orca causes OpenOffice / LibreOffice Java to crash

2011-04-06 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-orca

I am experiencing the following in both Open Office and Libre Office
writer:

Orca screen reader reads a portion of the complete text (when reading the whole
document) and then Open/Libre office crashes with no warning or dialogue.
As soon as trying to handle an object (such as an image) writer crashes
immediately with no warning or dialogue.

The attached logs show that something is going wrong in the Java
environment. I have tried both OpenJDK and Sun-Java6, both with the same
results and similar logs. I have attached both logs.

I have logged this as a bug with OpenJDK, but feel that the problem may
lie in Orca due to both Open and Sun Java reacting the same way.

[Bug 502991] Re: Tam Tam Mini does not start

2011-03-06 Thread Michael Jonker
Hi, this is effecting me as well on Ubuntu-Sugar-Remix 32bit. I am not
technical (but understand the basics behind a linux system), and am
trying to set up a portable sugar network for a local community group. I
am using Mint 10 as this is the easiest for a portable USB drive over
diverse hardware (wireless drivers etc). I am using USB sticks with
persistence.

Everything works well, except for the Tam Tam suite, as this bug is
describing. Tam Tam works on the Fedora 14 Sugar on a stick but it is
too cumbersome to get into the system to enable proprietary drivers,
Flash, video codecs etc.

Does anybody have a work-around or a patch with step by step
instructions? Tam Tam is going to be a hit with the kids and I would
really like to get it working.

[Bug 721805] [NEW] 'Start AWN automatically' causes Ubuntu theme to be dropped

2011-02-19 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: avant-window-navigator

The automatic start function from the AWN options behaves erratically.
On occasion the Ubuntu theme (Ambiance in my instance) flickers on for
about half a second, but is then replaced by the default Gnome theme.
Activating the theme preference window restores the Ubuntu theme in AWN
and the panels - but not in Nautilus (and some other apps I suspect)

This was happening at every few boots, but became permanent on my
netbook for which I alternate display to my Plasma TV. I resolved the
issue by unticking the 'Start AWN automatically' button and enabled AWN
via my start-up application list. It now works correctly so I suspect
there is a problem with the order in which the built in function is
trying to start things up.

Just did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 and there was no sound. I had
to implement the fix as described above - so the problem is not with the

I had similar problems with Fedora 14 so I suspect there is something
not getting along with the latest kernel and Alsa.

[Bug 711906] Re: Sound broken in kernel 2.6.35-25 after routine updates

2011-02-03 Thread Michael Jonker
Hi David,

I have recently run an upgrade from Lucid. I suspect that is where
2.6.32-27 is coming from, but cannot be sure. The sound was fine in
Maverick after the upgrade anyway for a few days until I ran the recent
update.

The only two kernels I have in Grub are 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.35-25, but I
have done nothing past regular install/ upgrade/ update to get them. (I
did delete older ones with Tweak weeks ago with Lucid running)

[Bug 711906] [NEW] Sound broken in kernel 2.6.35-25 after routine updates

2011-02-02 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

My sound was perfect until about an hour ago after I ran the regular
system update. All sound was dead even though all volumes were turned
up and alsamixer reported all channels turned up. I don't think a
kernel update was included, but I was not watching very carefully. Sound
works when I boot off 2.6.32-27.

I resolved the problem by enabling the ubuntu-audio-dev ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa
sudo apt-get update

and installing:

sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)

This is not ideal because the default repository packaging is breaking
the sound. I am not sure if this is going to break again on the next
kernel update?

Here is my sound configuration from BEFORE the fix (I ran wget
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh bash alsa-
info.sh from terminal to get this):

http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=99aca7c1374470f3e31df3d525904f5dd6aa6610

And AFTER:

http://www.alsa-

Mark, Apologies - I think I am getting the terminologies wrong.

I have attached two screenshots to clarify.

I feel this is a usability bug. I have joined Ayatana, so let me know if
you feel this is a better place to bring up these kind of issues.

[Bug 634068] Re: External display won't display

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
This morning I started the netbook with the TV plugged in. Netbook
screen was dead and TV good. (slightly different behaviour from last
night) Output of xrandr -q was:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1360 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 connected 1360x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1102mm x

I then restarted with the TV unplugged. Netbook screen was good again. I
plugged in the TV and it came alive with the strange black screen and
limited mouse pointer described above. Output of xrandr -q was:

[Bug 634822] [NEW] Buttons for Evolution window not accessible

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Using Evolution in Unity for the first time brings up the set-up wizard.
This window is sized to the effect that the 'continue' button is off
screen at the bottom. (see attached screenshot). The window will not
resize vertically by dragging the top down and I can't drag it up far
enough to expose the button.

It is thus not possible to set up mail in unity through the usual
process.

[Bug 634822] Re: Buttons for Evolution window not accessible

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
To add -

I tried Evolution Mail through the Unity Global Menu after filing this
bug. This works fine with a completely different interface. The problem
is that accessing Evolution through the envelope in the top panel uses a
different logic.

The two should be united and thus this is a bug.

[Bug 634068] Re: External display won't display

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
I think you are right about it getting confused. I ran gnome-display-
properties and the various settings give varying and incorrect results.
I have attached 4 screenshots to illustrate.

The only correct output I can get is when disabling either one of the
displays. In this case the remaining display is correct.

I will file as a separate bug the issue that gnome-display-properties is
not accessible through the GUI in Unity.

[Bug 634893] [NEW] gnome-display-properties not accessible through GUI

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Accessibility to this is important to regular users who may have needs
such as dual screen or mirrored screen in presentations or any other
situations where user preferences need to be accessed. eg. I am facing
the audience with my back to the projection - I will quickly need to
switch to mirrored screen to control the presentation.

If this is not readily available through the GUI it becomes a usability

[Bug 634901] Re: Evolution Mail access inconsistent between Global menu and top Panel

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
The issue is regarding consistency of presentation and workflow in
Unity. To illustrate:

A new, regular user, accessing their mail for the first time clicks on
the envelope in the top panel and is presented with the evolution
account assistant. - this is not a bug in itself.

A new, regular user, accessing their mail for the first time clicks on
the envelope in the Unity Global Menu and is presented with a different
account assistant. - this is also not a bug in itself, but it is two
separate workflows which will have to be documented and explained to
users twice, not to mention the confusion when trying to assist somebody
remotely.

In my opinion, this is a bug in Unity.

[Bug 635033] [NEW] Adding launcher to Global Menu is not intuative

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

The only way I can find to add an app launcher to the global menu is to
launch the app, grab it's global icon, drag it out of the menu area and
then drop it at a new location in the global menu.

For me, this was the last option to try and took me about 25minutes to
figure out. It consists of stringing together 4 different cognitive UI
actions.

My intuitions, in order, were:
-Right click on empty space in menu and expect 'add application' dialogue
followed by a handy list
-Browse for app in aplication menu and drag it to the gobal menu
-Browse for app in application menu, right click on it and select 'add to
global menu'
-Open app and right click on it's Global icon followed by menu item offering to
'add this to menu'

I admit that I may be tainted by my experience with various other UI's,
but feel that it is a bug that the Unity global menu has only one (and
in my opinion) complicate methodology for what is probably one of the
first things a new user will try and do.

[Bug 635067] [NEW] Global menu does not remember position of user launchers

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I have added a few custom launchers to the global menu and dragged them
below the system launchers. I have done this because the position I
associate system launchers with is at the Ubuntu logo.

After restart, my user icons are persistently moved back to the top,
between the Ubuntu logo and the system launchers.

If this is intentional, I feel it is incorrect as it locks a preset on a
highly user configurable area.

2010-09-09 Thread Michael Jonker
This affects me as well. I have tried from my inbuilt DVD writer and an
external USB writer to the same result as described above.

Ubuntu Lucid, 64bit

I filed this comment at bugzilla as well, the status is however still
'unconfirmed' there.

[Bug 633073] Re: Main menu does not display sub-categories next to search input

2010-09-09 Thread Michael Jonker
Mark,

I am not in a position to go to UDS, but would love to contribute what I
can to the UI development (I am not a programmer).

I have attached 2 images of how I feel Unity can be much more
accessible. This should be workable for touch, mouse, landscape and
portrait.

Michael

[Bug 634068] [NEW] External display won't display

2010-09-09 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I use my 50 Samsung plasma TV with my netbook as a media centre. This
worked 100% in Lucid.

In Maverick (Unity) the display registers during start up and shut down
sequences, but nothing in between (dead screen on the television). There
is no setting for 'Monitors' in the system preferences - so I can't
change the settings to test. Also, I can't find an Ubuntu supported app
in the software centre to control this.

Apologies if I am missing something, if this is the case then this bug
is a useability issue.

[Bug 634068] Re: External display won't display

2010-09-09 Thread Michael Jonker
Tested that with the following results:

In gnome-session the TV was not detected when the cable was plugged in.
I found the settings for monitor in the normal Ubuntu place, but the TV would
only activate when the netbook monitor was de-activated.
Restarting with the TV plugged in had the TV active, but not the netbook
monitor.
Restarting with the TV plugged out brought back normal display to the netbook.
Plugging TV back in had no effect
Restarting with TV plugged in now brought up the strange situation shown on the
attached photo:

Note the mouse curser below the flash reflection - this will move no
further to the right, but will move back onto the netbook screen.

[Bug 633073] [NEW] Main menu does not display sub-categories next to search input

2010-09-08 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When I click on the Ubuntu logo, top left of screen, I go into the unity
category menu with icons. The search bar is at top left. If I want to go
to the 'system' subcategory for example, I have to click on one of the
unrelated icon categories to access the text menu next to the search
bar. This is very poor accessibility and in my opinion a bug.

[Bug 633103] [NEW] No autohide for global menu

Public bug reported:

There is no option to autohide the global menu and this reduces

[Bug 633073] Re: Main menu does not display sub-categories next to search input

2010-09-08 Thread Michael Jonker
Thanks Omer and Mark. Please let me know if there is a better place to
file and discuss this.

Right clicking on the 'applications' icon brings up only a limited menu
which varies in scope. If clicked when an app with a white background is
open, the options are invisvible (see screenshots)

This workflow is not obvious (especially when you are used to
associating access to your applications and settings with the Ubuntu
logo). In my case, due to my bug report #633094, this icon was off the
screen with no obvious identity as a system function. This raises the
question of why the Ubuntu logo does anything at all if it is only
duplicating the functionality of another button - only slightly
differently?

In my opinion, icons giving access to system menus should be top of the
list, not 'foldable' and graphically very obvious that they are not an
application launcher.

Thanks for the bold new concept in netbooks. Hope my comments are
useful.

[Bug 625760] [NEW] When switching between logged in users, system hangs on black screen

2010-08-28 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

When I log out from my account, log into new account it works fine. I
then try to switch back to my original account through the stock Ubuntu
indicator applet. The open account disappears, but before the password
dialog appears the screen hangs on a full black screen. There is no
mouse cursor and the only way I know of to get back is to do a force
restart by holding down the power button.

[Bug 625768] [NEW] UI graphical problem on contact mechanism and categories

2010-08-28 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tryton-client

In the graphic user interface - the input area for 'contact mechanisms'
covers the bottom 2/3 of the user interface buttons. Hitting the top 1/3
of the 'Switch' button resolves the issue until I leave the dialog page.
When I return the issue re-appears.

The Category section has a similar issue, except that about 1/2 of the
input dialog is covered by the list box below. This seems to be
permanent.

The issue is persistent across pages from all categories.

[Bug 625760] Re: When switching between logged in users, system hangs on black screen

2010-08-28 Thread Michael Jonker
Trying this again and it seems to behave a bit differently at times.
Sometimes gives me a black screen with mouse but no keyboard input and
sometimes password dialog, but no keyboard input. Noticed there was disc
activity at this point, so I left it for a few minutes and it then came
alive by itself.

[Bug 625760] Re: When switching between logged in users, system hangs on black screen

2010-08-28 Thread Michael Jonker
OK. I am giving up for today to try and reproduce this with the 'log
out' applet. It has given no error after an hour of intensive switching.
I will use it from now and give feedback if the problem reproduces.

I forgot to mention that the original bug reported is intermittent.

I am noticing a difference between switching users from the 'log out'
applet and the 'Switch from' function in the indicator applet:

'Switch from... ' first brings up a gui log in window (for about 1second
in the old style without the user avatars) for the user that I am
switching from before showing up the gui user selector with avatars. The
'log out' applet goes directly to the gui user selector with avatars.

[Bug 538796] Re: cannot open Firefox when libmoon is installed

2010-05-14 Thread Michael Jonker
Can also confirm on Lucid 64 bit.

I un-install all the moonlight (libmoon and plugin) then run firefox
perfectly. I then reinstall moonlight and firefox runs perfectly. But,
alas - when I create a new user the problem is back in their account and
I have to do the un-install - reinstall trick again!

Not a problem for me, but very confusing for the non-technical users who
don't know. I suggest not installing moonlight for any standard users
until this is confirmed fixed.

[Bug 550239] [NEW] Text in toolbar same colour as background, Firefox, Stumble

2010-03-28 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)

Ambiance theme

Moved the 'StumbleUpon' toolbar in firefox to the menu bar. Expected to
be able to read the text next to icons.

The text is the same colour as the toolbar background, rendering it
invisible. It is readable when hovered over as this lightens the
background on the button. (see screenshot)

Sorry. Late night work, big fingers, small smartphone. Meant to say:

Not that I am aware of. Hope I can get boxee working with the post beta

Boxee needs to catch up with libcdio. They are also at beta.

[Bug 544118] [NEW] Backwards compatability from libcdio10 to libcdio7 not recognised in gdebi

2010-03-22 Thread Michael Jonker
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04 beta
libcdio 0.81-4

Trying to install Boxee 64bit (media centre) from the .deb dowloaded
from the Boxee web site. Worked fine on Karmic.

gdebi Fails with the message: Error: Dependency is not satisfiable:
libcdio7. libcdio10 Is installed from the Lucid repository, but is not
recognized by gdebi as substitute for libcdio7.

Don't know if libcdio10 is meant to be backwards compatible? If it is
then this is a bug.

[Bug 501670] Re: g_set_prgname() called multiple times

2010-02-23 Thread Michael Jonker
I am experiencing that this is not just a hidden error. My Gnome-Do
Docky is badly affected. It seems that it starts up a double process
which causes the dock to disappear at random times, and sometimes not at
all at startup. (a random behaviour). This is worked around by opening
the process manager and killing one of the processes.

When I run Gnome-Do from the command line, this is the message I get
(after a fresh install of 9.10)

(/usr/lib/gnome-do/Do.exe:2819): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

Expected: After creating new account via wizard I expected to be able to

What happened: Nothing. Connecting to 5...@ekiga.net via the 'echo test'
button flashes the phone icon to red, but then straight back to green.

I have tried all the sound settings, including the default ALSA
settings. Sound is set correctly in mixer, including microphone turned
up.

I have tried enabling all the audio codecs in the Ekiga menu

I have attached the output file of '$ ekiga -d 4 2output.txt'
