[Bug 1007783] Re: audio skips intermittently
Please note that the quick method I suggested above makes speaker icon look muted. Also, sound settings dialog and keyboard volume keys will become unusable. But in my case, getting rid of stuttering sound outweighs these drawbacks. In case the drawbacks are not acceptable to you, at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/572580 there is also a way to revert the changes: rm ~/.pulse-a11y-nostart rm ~/.pulse/client.conf Thanks for the link to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/PositionReporting I didn't know about it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007783 Title: audio skips intermittently To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1007783/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1007783] Re: audio skips intermittently
Quick followup: I just looked at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/572580 Disabling pulseaudio by these commands makes stuttering go away: touch ~/.pulse-a11y-nostart echo autospawn = no|tee -a ~/.pulse/client.conf killall pulseaudio So, the bug, in my case, must be in pulseaudio.

I believe the very detailed description of the same bug is also posted at http://askubuntu.com/questions/136729/audio-problems-in-different- browsers 00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) I have the same device too, and starting from Ubuntu 12.04 this problem persists not only with browser playback, but with playing any video or audio clip in any player. By the way, there's a workaround by using File -> Install menu. Software center developers did not disable it by (fortunate) oversight. [Bug 856504] [NEW] Software Center shows "No network connection" warning when there are actually a network connection
Public bug reported: Software Center shows "No network connection" warning when there are actually a network connection. It probably relies on Network Manager for it. But I don't use Network Manager. In the past six years, it never worked for me. Not when I was on dial-up, not when I used DSL, not when I use wireless now. Can Software Center take more smart approach, and actually try *using* network. If that fails, it should properly handle errors. Because when there is no network connection, but Network Manager tells it is there, you should properly handle errors anyway. [Bug 779654] [NEW] No changelog information with non-standard network connection
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager In Maverick, developers added a line "You may not be able to check for updates or download new updates". It appears when network-manager indicates no connection. In that version it was disturbing, but not harmful. Now in Natty, they have gone even further and disabled changelog downloading. It became wrong. If it goes further that way, in Oneric, we won't be able to install updates at all. It will be harmful. The thing is, I *have* a connection. It just is established by a command-line, not from network-manager. I would be eager to use network-manager, but it is not tailored to use a device that I'm connecting to internet with. I believe update-manager developers have no good reasons to disable networking functions of their program based on wrong indications of network-manager. Turn changelog downloading back, please. [Bug 657489] [NEW] grub package update may crash when used with PnP wireless modems
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub2 Many plug-and-play wireless modems present themselves as group of USB devices, including storage device, like CD-ROM. It is not a real drive, but a trick to help installing drivers on Windows. This storage has autorun file and drivers for Windows so that they are automatically installed when device is plugged in. I use Samsung U200 supported by madwimax package. It turns off the CD part of device with '/bin/echo -n $kernel > /sys/$devpath/driver/unbind' command in udev rules. This leads to a condition when in /dev/disk/by- id/ there is a link like this: "usb-Samsung_Install_Disk-0:0 -> ../../sr1". But there is no /dev/sr1 When one updates to grub 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3 in such condition, or issues "update-grub" or "grub-install" commands, he will see error messages. The output is the following. mi...@k8n:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc Segmentation fault Generating grub.cfg ... Segmentation fault Segmentation fault Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic Segmentation fault Segmentation fault Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin Segmentation fault Found Ubuntu 9.10 (9.10) on /dev/sda5 Segmentation fault Found Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (10.04) on /dev/sda6 Segmentation fault done During this process, /boot/grub/device.map gets destroyed, and as I believe, more severe consequences will follow on reboot. I just was reluctant to experience them, and tracked this issue. The reason is grub-mkdevicemap program, which crashes with segfault. It happens because NULL pointer (because of failed canonicalize_file_name) is supplied to strcmp function. By the standard, in such case its behavior is undefined. In my case, it preferred to crash. The patch to resolve this issue is attached. While my issue may seem exotic, there may be more plain way to get into the same trouble. There's also bugs like 518026 and 510436 which can be caused by this or likely issue, and remedied by the proposed patch. I am no way experienced in Debian or Ubuntu infrastructure, so please excuse me if this is prepared in a wrong way, and be welcome with questions and suggestions. ** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- grub package update may crash when used with PnP wireless modems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/657489 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts
@Manny: Yesterday I downloaded rdesktop_1.6.0.orig.tar.gz and rdesktop_1.6.0-3ubuntu1~ppa1.diff.gz from your PPA, and tried to analyze it thoroughly. I must admit that you did a great work of taking all these patches together! Today I tested rdesktop from your PPA in our office. First, I have to say I *always* use -y switch, because without it rdesktop uses *very* unreliable, in soft words, algorithm. From the code I have read it seems that its developers are smart people, and I still can't believe how could they choose such way of handling keyboard! With -y switch, TAB works properly, and I only encounter two bugs related to key handling: 1) numeric slash behaves like "/" key near right shift; 2) Break/Pause key does nothing. We know what caused both bugs, and working on solution now. Second, regarding -K switch. I need some detailed explanations here. I generally don't use it, but as I can tell, in rdesktop from your PPA, and in original rdesktop from 8.04, it works similarly. I can't find any bugs here. Except when not using -y, you get broken TAB key, but we just didn't notice it here, because of bigger problem: not using -y results in a mess instead of Russian layout. Also, I don't get several things about -K. Do you use Alt+F4? Actually, it's window manager key binding, so you must expect that whole rdesktop window will close. So it does. Is it OK? As for me, that was unpleasant surprise. What about PrintScreen? With -K switch, must it take a screenshot in Windows, or in Ubuntu? For now, it does this in Ubuntu, and screenshot dialog is invisible until rdesktop window is minimized, because it is below that window. I find this wrong, and believe that when rdesktop window is active, PrintScreen must take a screenshot inside Windows. Only if rdesktop window is inactive, it must take a screenshot in Ububntu. Do I get right that actually only CTRL+ALT+LEFT_ARROW and CTRL+ALT+RIGHT_ARROW are the key bindings users want to pass to Window Manager? Maybe there must be some config file so that a user could set up particular keys which must be handled by Window Manager. All other keys will be sent to remote Windows desktop. Our sales department kindly agreed to test starting from tomorrow the version you provided, so there will be a followup. -- rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251709 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 432205] Re: [MASTER] pppd timeout when trying to establish a DSL connection
@Emmanuel Touzery, @Nicolai_J. You are completely wrong on your point. But, as users, you might not know, and it's OK. You might also be surprised to know that one network card can have several IP addresses, and it is pretty well reasonable and sane setup for some networks. What I am afraid of is that developers of NetworkManager think like you (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/290639/comments/6) It would be very disturbing if they think we ask for some rare and unusual thing just out of curiosity. It must be understood that this is a *real* bug, it makes a lot of trouble for many people here, just not everyone is writing about this. If you only knew how mad we become working this bug around on hybrid modems with our dumb monopolist providers requiring bridge-mode and ceasing technical support otherwise! Re: [Bug 432205] Re: [MASTER] pppd timeout when trying to establish a DSL connection
I wonder how many people around the world connect to the internet with DSL. I also wonder if there are any developers who use DSL. Since this bug was underestimated, it has made its way into the release. Now, people around the world will be updating their systems and after reboot they will be unable to connect to the internet. Ironically, they will need the internet to find the 'pppoeconf' workaround. It must be clearly understood that most users differ very much from developers. Users usually have access to only one computer, and, since they already use DSL, they are in the place where there's no suitable wireless providers. This is a real problem, these people will be totally locked out. There was Ubuntu 8.10 which made my screen black, and computer totally unresponsive. I could throw away the installation disk, because there were no use of it. Re: [Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts
When working on this bug, we come to conclusion, that keyboard handling in rdesktop is done in a conceptually wrong way. I attach two executables we got so far, and they work in our office. We run them as "rdesktop -y ..." That -y switch is essential. If you can try it and it works for you, please report this. We worked on handling all the keys in a proper way in the first place. Desktop switching and window manager keys handling is another story, and we didn't change anything in this part yet. Re: [Bug 386900] Re: "Auto eth0" confusing for most people
Exactly. What kernel does is OK, and should not be changed. I meant the other thing: user can rename NM connections (not interfaces, and I don't want to rename interfaces!) in the dialog box on the screenshot I attached above. What I ask is just putting "Wired Connection 1" instead of "Auto eth0" by default there. I do it somehow manually, and no real network interfaces are harmed in the process. Also notification bubble must show the connection name as it is. So that user know what exactly is connected or disconnected by name she gave and used to. If I understand the problem correctly, no modification to notification bubbles code had to be done. Instead, default way of assigning a connection name in NetworkManager had to be changed. -- "Auto eth0" confusing for most people https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 454227] [NEW] ICQ contacts lack info
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: empathy There's a lot of user info in ICQ: nickname, real name, gender, birthdate, spoken languages and so on. In Empathy, contact information dialog has only ICQ number and nickname. This wouldn't disturb me mostly, but when I set up Empathy to my ICQ account, half of my contact list is displayed as just ICQ numbers, not even nicknames. I have no idea who is who there. It would be nice to get nicknames to be displayed somehow first, because that's what Pidgin does, and because there's no way to use Empathy until it's done. And second, it would be even better to enhance Contact Information dialog a little bit. It would help, for example, when one decides whether to approve authorization request. Re: [Bug 257190] Re: Setting status to 'Hidden' changes status to 'Busy' instead
With the latest updates today (18-10-2009): I still have to set my status to Hidden twice. After the first time, it is changed to Busy, and then to Hidden. If I change my status from user switcher, it's called "indicator-applet-session" (Ubuntu -> Set status -> Invisible), the status is changed to Busy, and does not become Hidden, no matter how many times set from that menu. But there's the worst thing: even when Empathy shows it's Hidden, ICQ USERS ANYWAY SEE MY STATUS AS *BUSY*. If most people are like me, after trying Empathy in new Ubuntu, they will become mad about this, because this bug gives a feeling of being absolutely out of control, and you even have to discover this yourself, because even being out of control is not quite obvious. -- Setting status to 'Hidden' changes status to 'Busy' instead https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/257190 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 414853] Re: Setting a mobile broadband connection to available to all users duplicates it.
I just updated again, and can confirm that this bug is still there. If this helps, there's another sequence of actions: 1. I already have "Office-GMC, Office-R and Office-Marina" connections. 2. When I booted with live USB on another computer, "auto eth2" appeared. 3. I renamed it to "Home". And got what is on 01.png 4. I closed the window and opened it again. I got what is depicted on 02.png Something very wrong happens to the model of this GtkTreeView on update. I also noticed that authentication dialog appearing on change behaves strangely, it doesn't close itself when pressing Apply button, I have to close it with [x] on the titlebar of it's window. Re: [Bug 438678] Re: 25configure_init uses /dev/ttyN.conf instead of /dev/ttyN for /etc/init/tty*.conf mangling
I see, but does it matter that the file was not reverted to original one, it was changed by upgrade again? What I am afraid of is not special cases of live images, but that there's a code in some .deb that stubbornly puts that nasty "exec /bin/login -f ubuntu /dev/tty2.conf 2>&1" line into /etc/init/ttyX files again and again. [Bug 438678] Re: 25configure_init uses /dev/ttyN.conf instead of /dev/ttyN for /etc/init/tty*.conf mangling
If fix was released 2009-10-02, how come that I did partial upgrade on my live USB yesterday, 2009-10-09, and my manually changed file /etc/init/tty2.conf was restored to the previous state? After clan install the file contents were: # tty2 - getty # # This service maintains a getty on tty2 from the point the system is # started until it is shut down again. start on runlevel [23] stop on runlevel [!23] respawn exec /bin/login -f ubuntu /dev/tty2.conf 2>&1 I manually changed the last line so that there was: # tty2 - getty # # This service maintains a getty on tty2 from the point the system is # started until it is shut down again. start on runlevel [23] stop on runlevel [!23] respawn exec /sbin/getty 115200 tty2 #exec /bin/login -f ubuntu /dev/tty2.conf 2>&1 Then I ran partial upgrade, and finally the file was # tty2 - getty # # This service maintains a getty on tty2 from the point the system is # started until it is shut down again. start on runlevel [23] stop on runlevel [!23] respawn exec /bin/login -f ubuntu /dev/tty2.conf 2>&1 #exec /bin/login -f ubuntu /dev/tty2.conf 2>&1 -- 25configure_init uses /dev/ttyN.conf instead of /dev/ttyN for /etc/init/tty*.conf mangling https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438678 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 412553] Re: Crash reporting is too annoying for the average user
I'd add to the original description one more thing: it would be nice to have something like a log or a database of reported and not reported bugs. Sometimes bug happens when I'm out of any network, and an icon with exclamation sign appers in the notification area. If I accidentally click it, the only option is to cancel the reporting. But the thing I want is not to cancel it, I just want to *postpone* reporting. Another thing is when several crashes happen. I once had six simultaneously. And then I have to walk through reporting the first one, cancelling the second one and so on. A list would be very helpful in this case. -- Crash reporting is too annoying for the average user https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412553 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 414853] Re: Setting a mobile broadband connection to available to all users duplicates it.
I'm currently testing Karmic Beta with latest updates from http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/trunk/ubuntu because network- manager applet just didn't work if installed from the disk. I think this bug is quite reproducible: 1. Make a USB startup disk with some space to store setting on it. 2. Boot from it on the first computer with LAN adapter. There will be "Auto eth0" connection. 3. Boot from it on another computer. There will appear "Auto eth1" connection. 3. Try to rename Auto eth0 to "home" or something. 4. Try to rename Auto eth1 to "office" 5. Finally, you will have duplicates of one or more connections on a list. Once trying to rename Auto eth0, eth1, and eth2 to "Home", "Office" and "Emercom", I got "Home", "Office", "Emercom", "Auto eth0" and "Auto eth1" on a list. If I remember correctly, the last two appeared at once when I renamed the last connection. ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- Setting a mobile broadband connection to available to all users duplicates it. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/414853 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts
@ktp420: so, you have only one keyboard layout: English, right? Yes, -y option introduced by this patch made keyboard work absolutely correctly in Hardy. Then, starting from Intrepid, running rdesktop with -y caused arrow keys and alike to stop working. Without -y option, keyboard in Russian layout made weird things, but arrows were working. So, if you have English layout only, and didn't use -y option, it must be that this patch didn't affect you in that sense. You might not reproduce the text from the Bug 270997, it was read thoroughly several times, I know it by heart. When you run rdesktop with -K option in windowed mode, ctrl+alt+arrow really should switch desktops. Also, did you manage before to switch desktops in full-screen mode? I mean, desktops could be switched, but you still don't see them behind the full-screen rdesktop window. -- rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251709 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts
@Juha Aatrokoski: now all is clear, thanks. Stupid me, of course there is one layout, Finnish don't need to switch to English one. It's Russian layout which we must frequently change to English and backwards. It gives many combinations, and even more weird effects. We are onto some solution for users with several keyboard layouts, when it will be ready, maybe it will solve VNC problem too. -- rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251709 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts
@Juha Aatrokoski: I am aware of your bug report, but I was completely confused after I read it, especially with "0=}" things. Do I undestand correctly that you connect with VNC to some computer, and then run there rdesktop? Can you reproduce this bug if you run rdesktop locally, without VNC? Do you run rdesktop with -y key, or without it? And about the part which I don't understand completely: when you press zero, shouldn't it send zero keycode to windows remote desktop? You say that with a finnish keymap the '0' key should produce "0=}". What do you mean? Also, do I understand correctly that you have two keyboard layouts, Finnish and English on the machine you work physically, the same layouts on the machine you connect to with VNC, and the same two on the Windows machine you work on with rdesktop? If so, you should have 8 combinations of layouts (En -> En -> En, Fi -> En -> En, En -> Fi -> En, Fi -> Fi -> En, and so on). Does this bug reproduce on each combination, or only on several ones? -- rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251709 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 251709] Re: rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts
@ktp420: Original bug title says: "rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts". ktp420, can you please tell us what exactly keyboard layouts do you use? And does your problem actually has something to do with typing letters in several keyboard layouts, or you complain about something different? If you complaints are about window manager key bindings, what exactly works wrong -- i.e. what steps do you take, what do you expect to get and what do you get instead? I would appreciate your comments very much, since we are working now on the solution. And I also have to note that GRDC doesn't solve the original problem of working with several keyboard layouts. It works as bad as rdesktop does. -- rdesktop works bad with several keyboard layouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251709 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The output was the following: === Ubuntu 8.04 === vk_handle_key( scancode=0x68) vk = 0xd0 Before updating modifier_state:0x0, pressed=0x1 After updating modifier_state:0x2 Sending extended scancode=0x2a, flags=0x0 Sending extended scancode=0x50, flags=0x0 vk_handle_key( scancode=0x68) vk = 0xd0 Before updating modifier_state:0x2, pressed=0x0 After updating modifier_state:0x0 Sending extended scancode=0x2a, flags=0xc000 Sending extended scancode=0x50, flags=0xc000 === Ubuntu 8.10 === vk_handle_key( scancode=0x74) vk = 0xdc Before updating modifier_state:0x0, pressed=0x1 After updating modifier_state:0x40 Sending extended scancode=0x5c, flags=0x0 vk_handle_key( scancode=0x74) vk = 0xdc Before updating modifier_state:0x40, pressed=0x0 After updating modifier_state:0x0 Sending extended scancode=0x5c, flags=0xc000 ** Affects: rdesktop (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- arrow keys in raw mode stopped working in Intrepid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/304044 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: usb-creator It is not enough for usb-creator package to depend on syslinux. syslinux package only recommends mtools. But without mtools installed, usb-creator will just hang. The reason is when usb-creator makes a call to syslinux, the latter fails with exit code 1 and the message "sh: mcopy: not found". It needs mcopy from mtools. -- How to reproduce: remove mtools and try to make a bootable USB. ** Affects: usb-creator (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: usb-creator It is not enough for usb-creator package to depend on syslinux. - sislynux package only recommends mtools. + syslinux package only recommends mtools.
