[Bug 1082511]

2015-03-13 Thread Michael.S.G
Information:
Thunar 1.6.6 was released prior to the patch being pushed to master.

So it looks like Thunar 1.6.7 will include this patch.

Great work and thanks.

[Bug 1082511]

2015-02-28 Thread Michael.S.G
I have installed xfdesktop 4.11.8 and the problem is resolved.
ie. Drag from file manager now works correctly with copy, move link.

The last inconsistancy is resolved with the Thunar patch by Thaddaeus
Tintenfisch (attachment 5981).
ie. Drag from desktop to file manager is corrected to a move operation.

These are two separate bugs from two separate packages, xfdesktop 4.10
and below and Thunar without Thaddaeus's patch.

As the xfdesktop issue is resolved in 4.11.8, The only thing remaining is for
Thaddaeus Tintenfisch patch (attachment 5981) to be submitted included in
Thunar.

Just to help anyone (With debian systems) the packages installed were:
Remove:
libxfce4ui-1-dev

Install:
xfce-keyboard-shortcuts_4.11.1-2_all.deb
libxfce4ui-1-0_4.11.1-2_i386.deb
libxfce4ui-common_4.11.1-2_all.deb
libxfce4ui-utils_4.11.1-2_i386.deb
xfdesktop4-data_4.11.8-1_all.deb
xfdesktop4_4.11.8-1_i386.deb

Note:
libxfce4ui-utils was probably not required, But I included it anyway.

Before the file dragged from file manager to desktop.

Notice the drag modifier indicates the file is being copied (Small '+'

[Bug 1082511]

2015-02-17 Thread Michael.S.G
Some clarification on what's happening.

Bug #1
When unmodified dragging a file from the file manager to the desktop, The drag
modifier shows the file is being copied (Small '+' symbol) but the file is
moved.
ie. The drag modifier incorrectly shows copy instead of nothing (move).

Bug #2
When copy dragging (ctrl held down) a file from the file manager to the
desktop, The drag modifier shows the file is being copied (Small '+' symbol)
but the file is moved.
ie. The copy operation is not carried out, The file is moved instead.

Inconsistancy #1
Unmodified dragging from the desktop to a file manager copies the file.
Unmodified dragging from a file manager to the desktop moves the file.
ie. What default used (Copy or Move) is irrelevent, The issue here is both the
operations should be consistant in their action of either Copy or Move.

Long standing issue
These problems are a barnacle for the unaware user, The issue may seem
innocuous but has a real possiblility of people loosing files because they
assume (As indicated) a copy operation has been carried out when infact a move
operation has occured.

Yes, It's a bit concerning. I have a feeling too much effort is put into
the next releases, Rather than fixing problems.

[Bug 571444] Re: Boot hangs and unable to continue when automount disk in fstab is not available (Off or Disconnected)

2010-05-02 Thread Michael.S.G
I have been delayed in getting the information (10.04 desktop
reinstall/setup eating my time)(Plus Wife factor of x3~6 delays)

However I will add to this bug's info.

This bug ALSO affects ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition.

I reproduced this but by accident on my Desktop install.

I was experimenting with moving Firefox cache to ram disk.
I put the Line in fstab. But FORGOT to make the directories in the file system.
On reboot. The Desktop hung (Same as server with external drive).
I used magic key to boot and fixed the problem. (Make /var/firefox/Cache
folder).

This was the entry I had in fstab

 none /var/firefox/Cache tmpfs defaults,noatime 0 0

or

 tmpfs /var/firefox/Cache tmpfs defaults,noatime 0 0

[Bug 571444] [NEW] Boot hangs and unable to continue when automount disk in fstab is not available (Off or Disconnected)

2010-04-28 Thread Michael.S.G
Public bug reported:

I have attached an external drive to mount on boot up of 10.04 server (Lucid).
It's label is WAD and is located and mounted via the following fstab entry:

LABEL=WAD  /mnt/WAD auto relatime,errors
=remount-ro 0 2

It's pretty generic and usually mounts either a ext3 or ext4 file
system.

However, If this drive is detached or powered down for some reason - Then the
entire boot process hangs!
There is no way to continue. You can switch terminals, But can not drop to any
command line or even login.
So you can't easily fix the problem either. ctrl-alt-del will initiate a
shutdown/restart.
Also booting into recovery mode exhibits the same problem.

The only way I could recover this server (As I had no live cd available) was to
hit alt-sysreq-i (Kill all tasks)
The process's it killed are as follow: (This may give a hint to where it is
hanging!?)
udev
portmap
statd
mountall
plymouth
Then it stated: General error mounting filesystems.
And droped into a terminal (Thank God), So I could fix fstab (remove the
external drive entry).

I feel this is a pretty serious issue. It almost forced me to reinstall the
server.
(Only chance made me press Alt-SysRq-ScrollLock to give me Magic Key Help)

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 437479] Re: cannot play any video files

2009-12-19 Thread Michael.S.G
The previous Ubuntu 9.10 test has an nVidia 5200 video card. (Different
PC)

With a fresh install of XUbuntu 9.10 on PC with old onboard Intel video chipset.
Video still crashed. Unable to workaround.
Extra note: Though banshee crashed playing video, Totem played fine.

I installed an old 32mb tnt2 video card. (Not even supported by the
legacy drivers!)

And video playback worked. (Using the the Now Playing workaround fix)

[Bug 437479] Re: cannot play any video files

2009-12-18 Thread Michael.S.G
Update to this bug as of 19/12/2009. After a few system updates
(gstreamer, kernel and some others) and also an update of Banshee
(1.5.4~really1.5.2-0ubuntu1~hyper1~karmic).

Going on a post re: Select Now playing.

As of this update, the ability to show the cover art in the side pane has
disappeared (Can we have it back!)
Also the allow internet access option seems to disappear after changing config
options in these latest releases.

100% reproduce on PC running Ubuntu 9.10.
Next post will be results for XUbuntu 9.10.

Make Fail #1

1) Start Banshee
2) Go to videos
3) Select video and press play button
4) Move mouse

Make Fail #2

1) Start Banshee
2) Go to videos
3) Select video
4) Go to Now Playing
5) Press play button
4) Move mouse

Success
---
1) Start Banshee

Synopsis:
You seem to have to Visit (ie. select it then select something else) Now

you can play anything willy nilly :-) Perhaps some sort of init problem...?

[Bug 437479] Re: cannot play any video files

2009-11-04 Thread Michael.S.G
Small update to the situation.

I am also having xine crash when switching between fullscreen and window modes.
For me, 9.10 (xubuntu and ubuntu same) there is something wrong with the video
system.

After four days trying to get 9.10 to work. I have given up and moved back to
9.04.
(9.04 (xubuntu and ubuntu) work flawlessly on this machine - Setup as a Jukebox)
(Also Grub2 was a disaster on this machine. And required non trivial fixes or
workarounds)

Notes:
Machine is old 933mhz with 640mb ram. Hence the use of xubuntu.
It is running GeForce2 video with 32mb of ram. (Uses the legacy 96 NVidia
drivers)

Other notes: (On the 9.10 system)
I tried Compiling Banshee from source. Still same problem. (Infact same version)
I tried Compiling GStreamer-Ugly. As there was a newer revision. Still same
problem.
I tried Compiling GStreamer-Bad. But gave up at that point and went back to
9.04.

Other comments:
9.10 DOES boot faster. And the xfce desktop loads quicker (Even seems a bit
snappier).
But as mentioned - Currently has issues - Big enough to warrant NOT upgrading
(yet).

I can also confirm this bug.

Using xubuntu 9.10.
[Info 17:54:51.016] Running Banshee 1.5.1: [Ubuntu karmic (development branch)

I found that deleting ~/.gstreamer-0.10/registry.i486.bin
got it working again.. But I suspect this is only a temp fix.

I might just delete that file on every login. Not sure what it does.
But it gets re-created.

[Bug 397892] Re: Screensaver does not turn on [Xubuntu Karmic]

2009-11-02 Thread Michael.S.G
I did have the screen saver working at one stage in xubuntu 9.10

I can't remember what I had installed, But you could try this:
http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-xfapplet-plugin
And ensure the gnome services under advanced of xfce services.

The alternate to using Gnome-Screensaver is to remove it
and install XScreensaver instead. (Uses the same data files).

XScreensaver is probably (imho) a better choice for xubuntu.

[Bug 403408] Re: Grub 2 problem, error: no such device

2009-11-01 Thread Michael.S.G
I can confirm this bug on a Fresh 9.10 install.

THIS FIX IS NOT RECOMMENDED -- editing: /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib

Some notes about the install.
500gb ide hd
Bios reports 136gb hd on bios boot screens. (Older PC)

Install goes fine, Reboot fails on error: no such device
Hold [shift] on boot and editing/removing search line enables boot to
continue.

However, If you somehow bork your system you may find single user unable to
boot.
At which point it starts to become tedious to recover your system from something
as simple as a X config causing lockup before you can get into a text console.
(Sigh).

The Alternate solution (Although not a fix as such) is to MANUALY create a
nominal size ext2 /boot partition at the start of your hard disk on install.

On boot, You still see the error flash up. But the boot continues. And there
is no need to edit the grub-mkconfig_lib file. The single user mode also works.
But memtest failed to run from the Grub2 menu.
