[Bug 508746] Re: rtl819xE:request firmware fail!

2010-03-23 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
@Toby: I guess you are using a 64-bit kernel, aren't you.

It seems in that case you must actually download a new driver from
realtek.

[Bug 508746] Re: rtl819xE:request firmware fail!

2010-03-06 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
I guess this is the 64bit effect!

I checked the realtek support website
(http://www.realtek.com.tw/search/default.aspx?keyword=8192). For the
USB version, there are drivers for 32 and 64 bits for Windows, nothing
mentioned for the PCI one.

BTW, to reply further to #5, the difference between the SE/SU and the
E/U versions is that the Sx is single chip, and realtek provides
different drivers.

[Bug 508746] Re: rtl819xE:request firmware fail!

2010-03-05 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
I also have a Samsung R580.
With the Lucid Kubuntu Alpha 3 Live CD, the r8192_pci kernel module is loaded
but the lshw tool reports the HW as disabled. I downloaded the firmware as
explained in #2, then I rmmod-ed and modprobe-d the module again. After that
the WiFi was up and usable.

To answer #5, I DL the source of the linux-firmware 1.32 and compared with what
I DL from git, and it is completely different (names sizes). So I think this
won't solve the problem.
Git := boot.img data.img main.img
Src := rtl8192sfw492.bin rtl8192sfw74.bin rtl8192sfw.bin

[Bug 492001] Re: Well, this is embarrassing message appears often after shutdown and hibernate

2010-01-13 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
I have a new install of Karmic Kubuntu (not an upgrade) and Firefox package
version is 3.5.7+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.10.1.
This is a laptop with a LUKS-encrypted HDD, so I have enabled the auto-login
feature of KDM.

Every time I boot-up, KDE restarts firefox (if it was up when I shut down) and
firefox complains that it can't resume the session. If I click on the try again
button on the it's embarrassing page, firefox can resume the session.
Furthermore, if I set a photo plasmoid to display a picture of the day, it
also complains that it can't access Internet.

So the problem is real and reproducible, but I think it is related to
the LAN connection not set-up in time for the user applications. I never
had this issue with the same laptop when using Jaunty.

[Bug 350491] Re: hibernation should be disallowed from the desktop when the installed kernel does not match the running kernel

2009-11-24 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
@Jeremy: I'd say that your proposal follows the KISS principle, which is
good. However, there are many cases where people have two or more
completely separated systems on their HDD. And in those cases, you don't
want to prevent users to boot into another system. Especially when one
system has been put on hold in order to use another one.

[Bug 311296] Re: rhythmbox doesn't drag drop ogg files to portable digital audio device

2009-04-02 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
I have an iriver E100 and here are the results of my investigations:

In UMS mode, I can transfer ogg files to my player, even when the
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse is not installed. And the files
remain ogg on my player.

In MTP mode, without the ugly-multiverse plugin, I can't transfer ogg
files: the mouse pointer changes to a +, but nothing happens. With the
plugin, I can transfer ogg files, BUT they are converted to MP3!

[Bug 310964] [NEW] knetworkmanager doesn't use kwallet to store PSK

2008-12-23 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

Intrepid Ibex (installed from beta kubuntu - maybe b5)
network-manager 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
network-manager-kde 1:0.7svn864988-0ubuntu1

knetworkmanager stores wifi passphrases (hashed as PSK) in
~/.kde/share/config/knetworkmanagerrc.

From a security point of view, it would be better to have them in a
secure place (like, for instance, kwallet) since it is plaintext PSK.
Furthermore, from a nomad user point of view, it would be simpler to
have the passphrases stored as plain text in kwallet (or when you want
to give the pass to another user).

Maybe there is an option to force KNM to use kwallet (since other bugs
state that there are problems with kwallet...) or maybe have KNM use
eCryptFS.

[Bug 267048] [NEW] partman-lvm cannot access luks-crypted newly-created partition

2008-09-06 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partman-lvm

Trying to install Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha-5 on an EeePC 701 (4G
internal + 4G SDHC memory card)

My partitioning steps are:
- sda1: use as /
- sdb1: encrypt using LUKS
- sdb1_cryptp1: replace default ext3 partition by LVM PV
- Start LVM partitioning
- - accept writing modification to sdb1_crypt

Then I get an error and console #4 reads:
partman-lvm: Can't open /dev/mapper/sdb1_crypt exclusively. Mounted filesystem?

Using console #2, I did:
# dmsetup ls
= Reports sdb1_crypt, sdb1_cryptp1
# dmsetup remove sdb1_cryptp1
= Then partman-lvm can start

Note: When I first encountered this problem, dmsetup remove sdb1_cryptp1
wasn't enough so I did instead
# dmsetup remove_all
# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb1 sdb1_crypt

Then I can create my LVM partitions.

But when I tried to end partitioning and apply the changes, sdb1_cryptp1
is back and the creation fails. So maybe the problem is more with
partman-crypt...

[Bug 122249] Having Aptitude group packages by Origin Archive

2007-06-26 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: aptitude

I found it interesting to add the names of the repository (e.g. the Origin) and
the archive in the package view. I use the following configuration with the
pattern keyword.
aptitude::UI::Default-Grouping task,status,pattern(~O~A=\1 -
\2),section(subdir,passthrough),section(topdir);

At first, I thought it would help spoofing attacks. My fear is that a
small, secondary repository could be hacked and if its GPG signature has
been added to APT then nothing prevents the pirate to seamlessly install
an update of an essential package with a trojan. But on second
thought, it seems that it is straightforward to spoof the name of a
repository.

So I guess this can only be flagged as WishList...

[Bug 76424] Re: resume from Hibernate fails with kernel upgrade

2007-06-13 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Jérôme this bug isn't related to a given version of the kernel. However I can
still answer the uname request:
Linux dell630 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

On the other hand, the 2 remaining requests are absolutely not relevant.
The problem is neither hardware related nor a bug per se. It is just
that it would be really, really nice to be reminded -in one way or
another- when you resume from a suspend to disk to select in GRUB the
previous kernel. Up to now, the new kernel version silently ignores the
swapped memory and the plain result is very similar to a hard reset.

At the kernel level, it'd be nice to have a safe_resume option that,
when present, would stop the kernel from loading if a resume image is
present in swap partition and versions don't match.

[Bug 40125] Re: Network cards not detected when resuming from suspend / hibernate

2007-05-31 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Guess what? It happened again :-(

The good news is that I think I found how to reproduce it. The sequence
is something like: use Wifi (e.g. office), suspend, resume with wifi
active but no network (e.g. train), suspend, resume with wifi active and
known network and cable plugged-in (e.g. home) - NM is unable to
connect with the wire.

I'll try to reproduce it a couple of times, to be sure.

[Bug 40125] Re: Network cards not detected when resuming from suspend / hibernate

2007-05-29 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
IRC my problem was _only_ with the _wired_ part of NM: I was unable to
use my wire connection after a suspend and/or after wifi. I did as
directed in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/40125/comments/68 with
http://librarian.launchpad.net/7403629/NetworkManager.conf.

It's been one month long and I never had the problem again. So for me
the correction is effective.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 630m and lspci returns:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02)
02:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network
Connection (rev 05)

I studied the kern logs before and juste after the problem occured (see
attachment). All the suspend phases are strictly identical. The resume
sequences are a bit different, but nothing obvious (at least for me)
besides some slightly modified timing.

[Bug 99755] Re: regression: Keyboard + Synaptic Touchpad randomly do not return from suspend on Dell 640m

2007-05-11 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Follow-up: the mouse is not to blame since I just had the problem again
but didn't plug it since the last reboot.

I can also confirm that the atkbd message only appears after the
problem, never before.

[Bug 99755] Re: regression: Keyboard + Synaptic Touchpad randomly do not return from suspend on Dell 640m

2007-05-10 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Same problem with a Dell 630m.

I have the feeling it is related to the use of an external USB Logitech
mouse (I have another no-name mouse which doesn't seem to trigger the
same bug). If the plug state of the mouse is different between before
sleep and after resume, the (internal) keyboard and touchpad are not
seen.

What is even more strange is that all pressed keys are still kept in a
queue; as soon as I managed to log-in again on the screen-saver, the keys are
applied (i.e. Fn+sleep, power button, shortcuts, ...). I also noticed that
after the problem occurred, the special shortcut Fn+F3 (Battery status) no
longer works and there is the following message in kern.log:
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e007 keycode' to make it known.
atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0x89 on isa0060/serio0).

If I close the cover of the laptop, wait until it goes into sleep mode
and then open it again, keyboard is back.

[Bug 76424] Re: resume from Hibernate fails with kernel upgrade

2007-04-15 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
I've also been annoyed by this for quite a while... Here are some of the
solutions I thought of:

- Insist on rebooting after a kernel upgrade. This is indeed the only time
where rebooting is really needed (in comparison to another well-known OS where
it is a common habit...). If the user declined, offers to remind her
periodically (maybe a Gnome/KDE applet would be a good way to do it - as when
there are updates available).
- Before doing a Hibernate, check whether a kernel upgrade occurred. In that
case, options are:
  - Remind the user that on next boot, she should choose the XXX line in GRUB.
  - Offer the user to do a shut-down instead,
  - If GRUB is configured to boot with default saved, change the default to
the currently used kernel.
  - Change GRUB to have no time-out...

Note that if Hibernate is mostly used on laptops, it can also be used
with desktops. So having different behaviours based on laptop/desktop
detection doesn't sound good to me.

[Bug 76424] Re: resume from Hibernate fails with kernel upgrade

2007-04-15 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
Another idea:
I don't know how this is done, but when the kernel boots it can detect if
hibernate was used instead of plain shutdown. So maybe it could also detect if
the swap contains a hibernate image from another kernel version. In that case,
it should present the user with the following options:
- continue booting and lose the previous hibernate (with a big, fat warning),
- continue booting and don't use that swap partition,
- stop booting (and return to grub through a reboot).

[Bug 47980] Re: systemsettings crashes

2007-04-15 Thread Michel D'HOOGE
I can't reproduce it with Feisty for the simple reason that it is no
longer available! For me, the bug occurred in Dapper when I tried to
accessed the Command shortcut tab (see attached screenshot of
Dapper/kcontrol). AFAIK, this tab is no longer with Feisty since -I
guess- this is meant to be configured through the K Menu editor.

Since there is a workaround with the LTS dapper (use kcontrol instead of
systemsettings), and since it is no longer available in Feisty, I'd vote
for closing that bug report.

Er, popcon in Ubuntu submits using HTTP, not mail? Check
 /etc/popularity-contest.conf

If you look at /etc/cron.weekly/popularity-contest, you can read:

SUBMITTED=no
# try to post the report through http POST
if [ $SUBMITURLS ] [ yes = $USEHTTP ]; then
...
fi
# try to email the popularity contest data
if [ yes != $SUBMITTED ]; then

So, if HTTP fails, it always fallback to mail...

I am no Python expert, but it seems to me that the '-u $URL' part is
ignored. Indeed, everything is hardcoded in the python script. I tried
the 'simple' following line:

# /usr/share/popularity-contest/popcon-upload-ubuntu /var/log
/popularity-contest

which resulted in 69kb sent (according to tcpdump). This bug could
surely also explains part of bug #35291.

As I wrote in bug #51149, I modified the popcon script to correct a bug.
And after manually running the script again (sudo
/etc/cron.weekly/popularity-contest), I observed with 'sudo ngrep host
popcon.ubuntu.com' that the content was correctly sent and the http server
response was Thanks!. I also checked with 'postqueue -p' that the postfix
queue was empty (since my postfix is configured to only deliver local mail,
previous attempts kept the fallback mail delivery in the queue).
