[Bug 1767299] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Installer creates swap partition too small

2019-11-02 Thread Mike m
I may have missed it, but I have encrypted SSD and want to hibernate. I
think I read that I have to use bigger encrypted swap partition (not
file) and that it needs to have user-entered password. Don't think I
found anything that had how to do all that together. I'm new to Linux,
so any help is appreciated!

at least this is foss, i fully expect someone to host a PPA with this
commit reverted that people can use, so hopefully it shouldnt be too
much of an issue for people who do really need it.

to be fair, its not asking for additional work, merely to keep the
existing work active, the default of only whitelisting java and wine
keeps the same experience unless the user explicitly overrides it, and
those overrides are staying in hard-coded form.

[Bug 757486] Re: [NVIDIA] Severe visual distortion in Unity3D, Unity2D and Gnome Shell

2012-06-18 Thread Mike M
Sorry for the delay but I think I've finally got to the bottom of this
issue... It was a dieing graphics card. The problem only manifested when
using 3D features which is why it started when I used Unity instead of
gnome but the problem happened on all graphics accelerated functions,
including when trying the same things in a dual boot windows install.
Changing the graphics card has fixed all of the problems. Apparently
this is fairly widely experienced problem with Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS
cards.

Thanks all for your patience and help.

[Bug 969359] Re: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu

2012-05-09 Thread Mike M
Hello,

Same problem here, upgrades Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 last week:
- /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon using 100% CPU after
back from screen-saver
- Keyboard "NumLock" blinking very fast
- If kill the gnome-settings-daemon if came back and if screen-saver runs again
the bug repeats...
(my keyboard is a Dell Model: SK-8135, don't know if matters)

I also notice something strange, when running "/usr/lib/gnome-settings-
daemon/gnome-settings-daemon --debug" manually I can see the output
messages, and just by hitting "NunLock" on my keyboard I get the
message:

"(gnome-settings-daemon:6711): libappindicator-CRITICAL **:
app_indicator_set_label: assertion `IS_APP_INDICATOR (self)' failed"

Same message that keeps repeating when the gnome-settings-daemon goes
crazy and start consuming 100% CPU.

Workaround?! Maybe, removing the keyboard plugin file from the g-s-d and
restarting the daemon:

$ sudo mv /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/keyboard.gnome-settings-plugin ~/
$ kill
kill it just to re-start the daemon, of if you're running by hand as me, just
CTRL+C and start it again.

Well... after that I can lock the screen, let the screen-saver starts, hit
"NunLock" on my keyboard and I don't get the error.
I just did that 40 minutes ago, I could be wrong, just get excited to post it
because the error message when hitting "NunLock" disappeared.

Cheers!

Yes it does still happen. It's got a bit better at times and others a
little worse. Generally it's fairly stable now until the graphics mode
switches (i.e. between normal usage and black screen idle time). I can
recover from it by changing the resolution to something and back again
or logging out/in

[Bug 769045] Re: ubuntu 11 freezes when using torrent client or any heavy network traffic for more than a few minutes

2011-10-15 Thread Mike M
Sorry for the delay, thanks for looking into this.

I've updated the summary to reflect that this isn't just about torrents,
in fact any large download caused the freeze. It's stopping me from
upgrading to 11.10 :(

Attachments as requested with the exception of kern.log.old as I don't
have that file. This freeze happened when I was half way through the
Ubuntu distro upgrade from the Update manager to 11.10.

** Summary changed:

- ubuntu 11 freezes when using torrent client for more than a few minutes
+ ubuntu 11 freezes when using torrent client or any heavy network traffic for
more than a few minutes

** Tags added: network

[Bug 769045] Re: ubuntu 11 freezes when using torrent client for more than a few minutes

2011-05-23 Thread Mike M
I reinstalled 10.10 on a laptop and used it as a torrent server and it's
completely stable, been running for over a week quite happily. My ubuntu
11 machine doesn't crash every five minutes any more now I'm not running
a torrent client but it still freezes if there's "heavy" network traffic
such as doing a bunch of big http downloads or watching a lot of
streaming video.

I think the torrent thing might be a red herring, the real problem is
that something in networking is unstable.

2011-04-25 Thread Mike M
Hi Fabio, sorry for the delay

Yes, I just downloaded and installed transmission and set a torrent
going, 3 minutes later a total freeze.

Oddly I've noticed that it takes longer to freeze if I'm actively using
my machine (maybe 20-30 mins) than when I'm leaving it idle (3-4 mins)

[Bug 769045] [NEW] ubuntu 11 freezes when using torrent client for more than a few minutes

2011-04-22 Thread Mike M
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from 10.10 to 11 every time I use a torrent client my
system completely freezes and nothing works to bring it back other than
a hard reboot. Usually the lights on my keyboard go out but sometimes
they're still on and a Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace or Alt-SysReq-REISUB etc. do
nothing.

I normally use KTorrent so tried upgrading that to the latest version
which didn't help, also I tried downloading a new client qBittorrent but
that didn't help either.

The crash/freeze is very reliable and happens about 1-4 minutes after
turning the client on (with active torrents, if they're all inactive it
seems ok). /var/crashes doesn't have any reports related to the freeze.
If you need any logs to determine what's going on let me know where to
look and I'll add them.

If I don't run any torrent clients then other than some compiz problems
my machine is stable and can happily run all day. Before I upgraded it
was totally stable and never froze - I've not changed any network or
torrent client/router config since then.

Any ideas?

[Bug 706947] Re: Rubbish Bin/Trash doesn't show deleted files

2011-03-21 Thread Mike M
The problem has gone away!

I'm not sure how it got resolved. I update all the time so maybe an update
fixed it?
Alternatively two things I did were to:

- enable deleting things without going to trash
- cleared out the content of the physical trash ~/.local/share/Trash/files

Anyway, it now works!

than low as for new (especially non-technical) users it just looks like
the Trash functionality doesn't work in Ubuntu.

[Bug 706947] [NEW] Rubbish Bin/Trash doesn't show deleted files

2011-01-24 Thread Mike M
Public bug reported:

Hi folks,

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 but I noticed this in 10.4 too. When I delete a
file (e.g. right click "Move to the rubbish bin") the file disappears
and the trash/bin icon at the bottom of my screen or on my desktop shows
some content graphically but when I right click and open the recycle bin
I get a nautilus window showing my rubbish bin with no files (even with
Ctrl+H). The restore button is grayed out but the empty button is
enabled, the status bar says 0 items.

~/.local/share/Trash has two folders "info" which has a list of things
I've deleted over time and "files" which stores 178 items taking up 135
Gb. I don't have "enable delete command that bypasses trash" checked.

Thanks for your time

Mike.

[Bug 616605] Re: hp dm1z ALPS touchpad not detected, scroll doesn't work

2011-01-02 Thread Mike M
Still not working for me either, 10.10 live usb. Would really like to
use Ubuntu on this machine but can't justify it without all touchpad
features since its my primary form of navigation. This can't be the
only laptop using this touchpad. Are there any other bugs dealing with
the same touchpad (but possibly on a different laptop) we can "combine"
with this one so that it won't expire or will be noticed more by the
developers?

[Bug 616605] [NEW] hp dm1z ALPS touchpad not detected, scroll doesn't work

2010-08-11 Thread Mike M
Public bug reported:

I have a HP dm1z-2000 laptop, and the touchpad is detected as a generic
device, not ALPS/Synaptic as it should (I believe on this machine it is
an ALPS touchpad). As a result, functions like vertical scroll do not
work. In the System -> Preferences -> Mouse settings, Touchpad does not
appear.

After reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad, I decided to open
this bug because it seems like a real issue. Also noticed that others
were having similar problems on different laptops, but according to the
Ubuntu Wiki, it said to open a new bug report anyway.

I am on Ubuntu 10.04, and the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics driver is at
1.2.2-1ubuntu4, and the linux kernel is 2.6.32-24.39.

I have attached all the outputs recommended by the Wiki and Launchpad.

Thanks.
