[Bug 1416396] Re: Unknown file system warning messages during dist-upgrade operation

2016-06-19 Thread Montblanc
Same very identical warnings appeared in my case too when dist-upgrading
xenial from 4.4.0-24 to 4.4.0-25.

[Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution if a Logitech Unifying Receiver is plugged in

2014-09-30 Thread Montblanc
Once upon a time, Launchpad was really open. You could set importance,
affected releases and assing bugs to people, teams or even yourself. I'm
not wondering why I opened this bug more than 2 years ago and no one has
taken care of it yet. Probably no one ever will.

Luckily this bug is not a blocker and there are many workarounds. I
guess we just have to change our password (as I did) or use Cédric's
workaround in comment #23.

[Bug 1278224] [NEW] X.Org causes RANDOM REBOOTS on x64 linux kernel

2014-02-09 Thread Montblanc
Public bug reported:

I already asked a question on AskUbuntu but I'm reporting it as a bug as
suggested by moderators.

I get lots of hard reboots when the xserver is supposed to do something
(that's why I call it random), especially when scrolling a pdf (2-4 scrolls
will suffice). For example, as I'm submitting this bug, my system rebooted
twice: the first time as I clicked on Yes, log me in, the second one as I
highlighted some words with the cursor. I also get reboots while pressing F2 to
rename a file (just before the box with highlighted text appears), and also
while opening/closing a tab on any browser (right before doing it).
It could really reboot on ANYTHING.

Here are some clues:

1. If I log into the system and don't do anything, the system is stable
and running until I start using it.

2. I'm running a mainstream kernel, but it doesn't matter. A saucy live
cd and even a natty live cd show the same bug.

3. It doesn't matter which desktop environment is running. Ubuntu,
Kubuntu and Xubuntu are all showing the same problem.

4. It doesn't matter which graphic driver is running: nouveau, nvidia
and mesa are all affected.

5. System logs don't show anything, they stop before the crash and
restart at boot.

6. A linux i386 (32 bits) kernel DOES NOT SHOW THIS PROBLEM.

My motherboard is an Asus A8R-MVP upgraded to the latest BIOS available
and my GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT. I already tested my RAM for 3
hours, tested GPU temperature, bought a new PSU and SATA cables, ran
SMART tests, but my hardware seems absolutely fine.

Also, these are the parameters I've set in /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nohz=off ipv6.disable=1
enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1 pata_ali.atapi_dma=1
iommu=force

I'll try to attach anything that could be useful, but so far my system
thinks everything is fine...

Please, feel free to ask any additional info.

[Bug 1070531] Re: fglrx drivers broken after upgrading to quantal with dual Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series cards

2014-01-08 Thread Montblanc
Sure, Christopher.
It's HP G62-a014SL

** Description changed:

- I'm using a HP Pavilion G62 that switches between two ATI cards: a HD 4200
and a HD 5400. After upgrading from Precise to Quantal, the resolution is very
low, no compositing is available, Unity fails to load, no window decorations
are present and I just get the cursor, a wallpaper and desktop icons.
+ I'm using a HP Pavilion G62-a014SL that switches between two ATI cards: a HD

very low, no compositing is available, Unity fails to load, no window
decorations are present and I just get the cursor, a wallpaper and desktop
icons.
I thought that since the Radeon HD 4xxx branch is now under the new driver
support model, I had to install fglrx-legacy drivers from ppa:makson96/fglrx
(even if my secondary card is in the original driver support model) which also
downgrades the X server, but it didn't work: I just got a black screen and Xorg
segmentation faults, no matter which xorg.conf is used (I tried with Quantal's
default and 'amdconfig --initial -f').
I'm using the open source ati drivers now, which suffer from overheating. I
can't get more that 30 minutes of uptime.
I also have the feeling that my system can't switch between the two VGA cards
(as in bug #1021024 ). That could explain the overheating that I'm experiencing
since forever (though with the open source ati drivers it's gotten even worse,
as I said before) or why fglrx is failing to detect my cards / load properly.
As you can see, switcheroo is enabled:
  grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-3.5.0-18-generic
  CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO=y

  but I haven't got any /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo .

[Bug 1241897] Re: Regression: Losing wired connection after upgrading to 13.10

2013-10-21 Thread Montblanc
** Tags removed: kubuntu

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

** Description changed:

After upgrading from 13.04, Kubuntu holds a wired connection for a few
seconds and then drops it. I can untick Enable networking on the
Network Management tray icon and then tick it again to have the
connection back for a few seconds. That's what I'm doing right now to

-
+ submit this bug.
+
+ A workaround I've been using since upgrading is to boot latest raring
+ kernel from 3.8 branch.
+
+ I also tested 3.11-rc6 and it seems to be already fixed in upstream.

[Bug 1241897] Re: Regression: Losing wired connection after upgrading to 13.10

2013-10-21 Thread Montblanc
** Description changed:

After upgrading from 13.04, Kubuntu holds a wired connection for a few
seconds and then drops it. I can untick Enable networking on the
Network Management tray icon and then tick it again to have the
connection back for a few seconds. That's what I'm doing right now to
  submit this bug.

A workaround I've been using since upgrading is to boot latest raring
  kernel from 3.8 branch.

- I also tested 3.11-rc6 and it seems to be already fixed in upstream.

[Bug 1241897] Re: Losing wired connection after upgrading to 13.10 [eth0: hw checksum failure]

2013-10-19 Thread Montblanc
I tried booting Ubuntu 13.10 from a live session and I'm experiencing
the same problem, so it's not happening just on Kubuntu. Is there any
regression in the kernel? A live 13.04 doesn't show this problem

P.S.: I had a look at the logs, but today there are no such hw csum
failures and none of those lines about skge.

[Bug 1186331] [NEW] [PATCH] e2fsck hangs up boot process because Device or resource busy while checking ext3 journal for foobar

2013-05-31 Thread Montblanc
Public bug reported:

I installed Kubuntu 13.04 x64 on a new SSD, but pointed its ext4 journal
to another partition on a spinning disk (same block size, of course).

At every boot, e2fsck prompts me to check / for errors but it dies
because:

fsck.ext4: Device or resource busy while checking ext3 journal for
foobar

foobar: ** WARNING: Filesystem still has errors **

[Please, also note: If I press I to ignore and continue the boot
process, it complains about /tmp not being ready yet (I used bind in
fstab because it's on another partition). So I press S to skip the mount
and access lightdm which can't login yet because /tmp is unmounted (it
would just restart itself). Accessing the tty with CTRL+ALT+F1 works and
I can sudo mountall to correctly mount /tmp, then login and use the
system as usual.]

Using a LiveCD to fsck the / partition shows that the filesystem is
clean.

I built e2fsck from source and applied this patch
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-ext4/msg38096.html before compiling
and it solved the problem.

Now the boot-up process is smooth and it also carried away the /tmp not
ready issue.

Please, apply this patch to e2fsprogs.

If you need more info, please just tell me.

[Bug 1091792] Re: The disk drive for /tmp is not ready yet or not present

2013-05-31 Thread Montblanc
Dear Steve,
It came out that this was just a consequence of a bug in e2fsck hanging up the
boot process when the external journal for / is on another partition. I filed
bug #1186331 which also contains a patch.

This bug is still showing on raring. I read that it was fixed in the

kernel).

[Bug 1091792] Re: The disk drive for /tmp is not ready yet or not present

2013-05-30 Thread Montblanc
I'm still experiencing this on 13.04 x64 with up-to-date mountall. The
only difference is that /tmp is bound to another partition as specified
in fstab. If I press S to skip mounting it and continue booting and
then CTRL+ALT+F1 to access the tty and do a 'sudo mountall', the tmp
partition gets mounted correctly and the system is perfectly usable.
Funny is that once in a while it just works. My system is on the SSD,
while tmp and var on HDD, so I thought this could be a matter of my / on
ssd loading too early than /tmp (my 2 cents). nobootwait as fstab option
didn't do the trick. Should I file another bug?

[Bug 1172967] Re: cannot connect to the internet after upgrade to raring

2013-04-30 Thread Montblanc
Bug #1097002 is about wireless connections, are we sure it's a
duplicate? By the way, I'm experiencing the same after upgrading to
raring. I'm using an ETHERNET connection, though everything seems fine
system-wide (syslogs, network manager and so on). To be able to connect,
I have to

sudo service networking restart

Do you need any more info? Just tell me.

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-10-30 Thread Montblanc
@marcel Indeed. Is HP the only manufacturer providing dual ATI? I have a
G62 as you can see in bug #1070531 . I could turn that one into a bug
that affects dual ATI laptops from HP, what do you think about that?

[Bug 1068661] Re: Unity does not load after installing fglrx/fglrx-updates in ATI/Radeon + Intel GPU hybrid systems

2012-10-29 Thread Montblanc
I'm glad you found out that this problem was affecting hybrid Intel/ATI
systems, I really hope it will be solved soon.

Now, imagine: a hybrid ATI/ATI system, the primary one which is legacy
(HD 4200) and the secondary is newer (HD 5600). No need to say that the
Intel workarounds you're all so happy with has no effect in my case.
Also, the fglrx-updates workaround was the first one I tried but there
was no difference.

Now I have both my GPUs running at full speed like a tazmanian devil
thanks to the awesome ati open drivers and switcheroo that totally
disappeared (was it even there before?).

Once upon a time, I filed bug #1070531 , but after years as a Launchpad
user, I know that I'll be left all by myself.

But I can't blame anyone: can you imagine a laptop which switches
between two ati cards where the first one needs legacy drivers and an
older version of X? Of course I tried turning the 4200 off in the BIOS,
but it seems that the only things I'm allowed to change are language
and time. You must be kidding me, HP.

[Bug 1070531] Re: fglrx drivers broken after upgrading to quantal

2012-10-23 Thread Montblanc
** Description changed:

- Provide details about the issue.
+ I'm using a HP Pavilion G62 that switches between two ATI cards: a HD 4200
and a HD 5400. After upgrading from Precise to Quantal, the resolution is very
low, no compositing is available, Unity fails to load, no window decorations
are present and I just get the cursor, a wallpaper and desktop icons (same as
bug #1068661 ).
+ Many people are experiencing (almost) the same issues with HD 6xxx and HD
7xxx branches too.
+
+
+ My bug report could end here, however, I'm adding more information just
+ for completeness:
+
+ I thought that since the Radeon HD 4xxx branch is now legacy
+ (unsupported) I had to install fglrx-legacy drivers from
+ ppa:makson96/fglrx (even if my secondary card is supported) which also
+ downgrades the X server, but it didn't work: I just got a black screen
+ and Xorg segmentation faults, no matter which xorg.conf is used (I tried
+ with Quantal's default and 'amdconfig --initial -f').
+
+ I'm using the open source ati drivers now, which suffer from
+ overheating. I can't get more that 30 minutes of uptime.
+
+ I also have the feeling that my system can't switch between the two VGA
+ cards (as in bug #1021024 ). That could explain the overheating that I'm
+ experiencing since forever (though with the open source ati drivers it's
+ gotten even worse, as I said before) or why fglrx is failing to detect
+ my cards / load properly. As you can see, switcheroo is enabled:
+
+ $ grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-3.5.0-18-generic
+ CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO=y
+
+ but I haven't got any /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo .
+
+ Please, just tell me if you need more information.

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-10-23 Thread Montblanc
Installing fglrx-legacy from makson96's ppa didn't work for my RS800 (HD
4200). X segfaults and I only get a black screen, no matter which
xorg.conf I use.

[Bug 1070531] Re: fglrx drivers broken after upgrading to quantal

2012-10-23 Thread Montblanc
THREE bugs at once?! My usual luck! :)

Let me answer you step by step:

1) I understand. I marked myself as affected and subscribed to that bug.
I hope it gets solved soon, since the fglrx-legacy workaround didn't
work for me;

2) Ok, so let's keep this as a bug in fglrx-* using HD 5400.
Unfortunately, the bios shipped with my notebook really sucks. There's
no other word I could use to describe it. I can't change ANYTHING from
the BIOS, that's why I meant to play around with switcheroo, but to no
avail.

3) Thanks for the tips! The possibility to switch governor totally
slipped out of my mind. Though, I can only think of it as a temporary
workaround. The main reason why I think it overheats it's because it's
keeping both VGAs active. Should I file a new bug report to address my
issues while using two cards simultaneously?

Thank you so much for your patience, Christopher. :)

[Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series

2012-10-22 Thread Montblanc
The very same problem is happening on a HP Pavilion G62 which switches
between two VGAs: HD 4200 and HD5400. I don't know if the problem is
because HD 4xxx series is now legacy (unsupported) while HD 5xxx series
is not, but I also tried setting up makson96's ppa to install fglrx-
legacy drivers, but I only get a black screen. I'm now stuck with the
open source drivers which suffer from overheating and my notebook shuts
itself off before I can do anything.

[Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution if a Logitech Unifying Receiver is plugged in

2012-07-16 Thread Montblanc
Kudos, Dirk! :)

I'm so glad that someone could finally solve the mystery behind this
issue!

You explained it in a very simple and clear way and provided not 1, but
2 workarounds and also proposed a solution! I'm going for Option 1, but
I'm confident they'll remove the logitech-dj driver in the future, that
would make sense.

You've become my personal god of bugs, really... thanks!

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint in flash when it uses video acceleration

2012-05-24 Thread Montblanc
Well, it seems he tried to reproduce it in the end... but it's not
happening on his Quadro 2000.

My friend has a GT430, and after we both upgraded to Precise he was
shocked to see that I was displaying blue faces while he was not. I'm
putting my 2 cents in, but I think we can finally state that this issue
is happening on a specific range of nVidia cards. The ideal solution
would be for Adobe to collect as much data as possibile about the
affected cards and provide an ad hoc solution.

Also, it makes sense when you think it's related to Stage Video: I was
displaying blue faces on Vimeo too.

Let's make some pressure on Adobe

2012-05-16 Thread Montblanc
We are 2 at least, so it can't be dodgy hardware. :) Plus, it wasn't
happening on Oneiric. Please, take a look at bug at #995715 that shows
another regression about the Unifying Receiver support; in the last
comment I realized I was having this issue too. Could you please try
typing in the username box at the login screen to see if your keyboard
locale is correct (unless you're already using en_US)? Maybe we're
talking about the same bug.

[Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution if a Logitech Unifying Receiver is plugged in

2012-05-09 Thread Montblanc
Please, let me add one last thing. I figured out that when I start the
machine while my keyboard is switched off, turning it on at the greeter
doesn't work. I have to remove the Unifying Receiver and plug it in
again while the keyboard is on in order to be able to type.

This strange behaviour was introduced in Precise.

I hope you have enough information at this point. Please feel free to
ask for anything else.

[Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution if a Logitech Unifying Receiver is plugged in

2012-05-08 Thread Montblanc
Okay, it seems I made some progress. I was right to think the problem
was in the keyboard. I tried these steps:

1) Started the machine with a USB keyboard plugged in: KDM detects the correct
locale.
2) Started the machine with both USB keyboard and Logitech K800: KDM is
detecting the correct locale for BOTH keyboards.
3) Started the machine with Logitech K800 plugged in: wrong locale again.

So the problem seems to be in keyboards locale detection using the
Logitech Unifying Receiver.

I could also reproduce the problem:

1) Installed Oneiric on a new partition with a USB keyboard plugged in. (RIGHT
LOCALE)
2) Unplugged the USB keyboard and plugged the Logitech Unifying Receiver.
(RIGHT LOCALE)
3) Rebooted to KDM. (RIGHT LOCALE)
4) Upgraded to Precise and rebooted to KDM. (WRONG LOCALE)

[Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution

2012-05-07 Thread Montblanc
@flowermachine Are you using a wireless keyboard? And can you please add
your xorg.conf? I search Googled for this problem too and it seems
related at first, but people could solve it by adding locale settings to
10-evdev.conf or xorg.conf. I tried both proposed solutions, but it
didn't work so I'll keep the bug on Ubuntu and let users select a
different distribution if that happens to be the case. Also, are you
suggesting I should add the xserver-xorg package to the bug?

[Bug 995715] [NEW] X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution

2012-05-06 Thread Montblanc
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Precise, X locale is defaulted to en_US regardless of
system-wide and user specific options.

I found out about this issue when I tried to login via the KDM greeter
and it was not recognizing my password. I got pam authentication
failures in the auth.log, but authorizations files were just fine. In
fact, I could login from the console and within KDE itself. When I tried
typing on the KDM username box, I found out that special characters were
not corresponding to my it_IT layout. My password was including the
special character @ that was typed as ; thus not accepting my password.
I worked this around by changing password to not include any special
character.

I installed LightDM and the problem persisted, so I thought about an
evdev bug.

I posted this issue on the Kubuntu Forums at first, where you can find
more information and logs [
http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?58623-Can-t-login-via-KDM-
after-upgrading-to-Precise ].

Recently, German users were experiencing the same problem [
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/kein-login-in-kdm-nach-upgrade/ ]
where I found out that the only thing in common is a wireless keyboard.

I bought a Logitech K800 (which uses a Unifying Receiver) when I was
running Oneiric, making this the first time I upgraded my distribution
with a wireless keyboard. If that happens to be the problem, It could
mean that my keyboard locale was not recognized during the upgrade
process.

I'm attaching some configuration files and logs, please tell me if you
need more information.

[Bug 260744] Re: no login possible after installing kubuntu-desktop

2012-05-03 Thread Montblanc
I'm affected by this bug after upgrading Kubuntu Oneiric to Precise by
changing every oneiric occurrence to precise in sources.list and
then running a dist-upgrade (because my environment was not triggering
an available upgrade notification).

Something weird has happened in PAM, since it's trying to look for my
user with a wrong uid.

I can login with startx /usr/bin/startkde only, but then I would get
authentication failures everywhere I'm asked to input my password for
root privileges, unless I run the same commands from terminal with sudo.

I wrote in the Kubuntu forums:

I'm sorry, I forgot I'm on Ubuntu which uses sudo -s, my fault.
Please, disregard the comment above.

The only thing that might help is that a newly created user can log in
(password is accepted), but after trying to load X, it pops back to the
login screen.

I just wanted to say that I can shutdown properly from 3.0.0-15.26 on.
It was probably another bug, though, since I was having the same issues
but no NFS partitions.

@Søren you should try setting '/sbin/shutdown -hp' in kdm settings.
'/sbin/halt -p' didn't work for me on kdm, but it was fine from the shell.

Re: [Bug 859075] Re: Oneiric does not shutdown

2011-10-29 Thread Montblanc
It's great you found a workaround, Steven, but that can't be applied
on my environment since I don't have any nfs partitions, thus any
/sbin/umountnfs.sh . At this point, I'm not sure anymore we're talking
about the same bug... should I file another bug-report? :(

2011/10/29 Stevan Kew Ell 859...@bugs.launchpad.net:
I have a hack that works for me.  I should say that I have a very
incomplete understanding of the way the umount* files work with each
other, but I don't think the hack is likely to affect anything else.

I have edited the file /etc/init.t/umountnfs.sh

Somewhere around line 84, alter the following line:-
 fstab-decode umount $FLAGS $DIRS
 to

 fstab-decode /sbin/umount.nfs $DIRS $FLAGS

Note that the two options need to be switched around  to $DIRS $FLAGS

 This works on Wheezy too.

Re: [Bug 859075] Re: Oneiric does not shutdown

2011-10-22 Thread Montblanc
@Steven so can you shutdown normally unmounting all nfs partitions and
usb disks before the halt command? As you can see, I only have my
internal hard drives mounted and samba daemon running.

2011/10/22 Stevan Kew Ell 859...@bugs.launchpad.net:
Latest investigation suggests that if a USB disk is plugged in and
mounted, shutdown fails too.  I'll try to do more tests on this, but
again, it would be interesting ti see if others find consistency in
 this,

Sharing folders is different than mounting remote filesystems.

Can everybody affected just paste the output of 'mount' from a terminal
 window?

umountnfs *should* be working, so if its not, there's something screwy.

2011-10-15 Thread Montblanc
@PhobosK I agree that this bug should definitely be reopened, but as I said
in the comment before yours, KDE is not halting too, but it does poweroff. I
have to 'sudo halt -p now' instead of shutting down as *human beings* do!
Il giorno 16/ott/2011 03:45, PhobosK phob...@kbfx.net ha scritto:

 @Andy Whitcroft,
I do not know what exactly do you mean by fix a long broken upstream
behaviour, as all the other distroes i use (Mandriva, Gentoo, SuSe, Fedora)
do poweroff after issuing an /sbin/halt command...

Actually Oneiric doesn't honour the user preferences poweroff flag (set
in the /etc/default/halt and used by /etc/init.d/halt) at all, and this
 behaviour is a kinda annoying.

Besides if the halt/poweroff behaviour in Oneiric has been fixed,
there should be a fix for KDM/KDE (probably other desktop environments
as well) too, 'cause right now their Shutdown command does halt
 without poweroff

There is something that really needs fixing and i do not think this bug
should be closed... actually bug #809628 is a duplicate...

[Bug 573311] Re: failed to load module fglrx on ATI Radeon RS880

2011-07-07 Thread Montblanc
This bug is affecting me too, on Natty, with the same hardware (on a HP
P3135 AX250). The only thing I thought could be the problem might be the
way the BIOS is sharing video memory. It is reported to work with UMA or
UMA + Sideport, but I think it's using Sideport only and I can't change
these options in the BIOS, I can't even see them as options. Moreover,
there is no BIOS update, and there won't be any.

[Bug 792463] [NEW] [natty] Firefox window is not accepting inputs anymore (can't left/right click , tab etc...)

2011-06-03 Thread Montblanc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I had no problems with Firefox, yesterday. Probably it was some system
update to cause this wierd behaviour.

I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 and nvidia propietary drivers. When I start
Firefox I can navigate the menu bar plasmoid, open bookmarks, edit
preferences and so on, but I can't click anywhere on the window, nor the
navigation buttons. I can just scroll the web page with the mouse wheel.
In few words, I can't navigate. It's like the Firefox window has lost
interactivity, as it was not an xorg window.

I'm sorry, I've just read jonie's reply.

@jonie So, according to you it's just a matter of reading time in
reallocated sectors? I don't know how to look for them, can you point it
out to me, please? It makes sense, though, since the system is
definitely usable.

One more thing I noticed is that after buying another SATA drive I'm now
having either `failed command READ DMA` or `failed command READ DMA EXT`
(might be unrelated), but just on ata4.00 (one of the old drives), the
new one and the other one show no errors, so I'm thinking about a power
supply issue (too many drives attached to one cable?)

meidarocha,
If you're using proprietary drivers, you will need to build them
against EVERY new kernel. To accomplish that in my way, start
2.6.35-25 recovery mode and drop to root shell. Then `telinit 3`, log
in, and `cd` to the path where the drivers are stored. Then `sudo bash
nameofthedriver.run`. If you're not using proprietary drivers, then
please file a new bug (recommended) or reopen this one adding your
logs.

2011-01-29 Thread Montblanc
meiradarocha, can you give us more info? For example, what were you
expecting and what happened instead? The anomalies that were happening
together with Radeon breakage were fixed for me as a fix was released
in 2.6.35-25.44. Are you sure it is the same bug I described in the
op? Otherwise I think you have to file a new bug with

ubuntu-bug kernelname

from the shell, where kernelname is the name of the kernel package.

2011-01-27 Thread Montblanc
Oh, i was not alone, at least! Since graphics hung for nVidia users at
the same time Ati users got it screwed up, and it started working
again after a Radeon fix was released, it seems that the buggy changes
made to the kernel affected overall graphics. Also, my mainboard has
an Ati chipset, don't know if it helps.

I understand it too, but fact is that after the fix was released,
graphics did not hang as before for me. An arcane to be solved...

The fix released for bug #703553 solved this issue, probably as a side
effect. It was really related, in the end.

[Bug 703553] Re: After upgrade to linux-image-2.6.35-25 Radeon graphics are broken

2011-01-25 Thread Montblanc
The changes that were reverted in 2.6.35-25.44 solved graphics issues
for nVidia cards too, as I suspected. I was able to telinit 3 and
install the drivers against this kernel and everything is working fine
now. It was useless to open bug #705596 since it was really related to
this one (probably it was the same issue), but thanks to Steve for
(unknowingly) fixing it! :)

[Bug 472518] Re: Update notification never appears

2011-01-25 Thread Montblanc
kpackagekit is still not triggering new updates. I applied Rominet's fix to
/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt_check.py one more time, but update-notifier-kde is
a dummy package in maverick, leading to kubuntu-notification-helper, which
doesn't seem to have any executables (please, correct me if I'm wrong), so I
still have to check whether it works or not.
I will wait for new updates and will keep you updated on the tray icon
behaviour.

[Bug 705596] [NEW] [STAGING] nVidia graphics are broken on linux-image-2.6.35-25

2011-01-20 Thread Montblanc
Public bug reported:

I'm using Kubuntu 10.10 i386 and an nVidia GeForce 9500 GT with proprietary
drivers.
After upgrading to 2.6.35-25 (mesa?) graphics are broken. With this I mean:

1) When booting normally, it stucks at the boot logo, long before kdm.
2) When booting in recovery mode, I can see few lines of the kernel starting up
which stuck and, later, a few green artifacts on the screen above the kernel
lines.

It's very similar to bug #703553 , but I can't access the tty shell both
by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1 and by entering recovery mode, making it
impossibile for me to install nvidia proprietary drivers against this
kernel and, obviously, using my pc as normal.

2.6.35-24 is the latest working release.

Also, I couldn't choose `linux (Ubuntu Maverick)` as an affected package like
in bug #703553 , can you kindly do it for me?
