[Bug 1511524] Re: OpenVPN PAM authentication broken on 15.10 Server

2018-05-19 Thread Stepan Motin
Confirm. The same problem in Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic with OpenVPN 2.4.4, and
the same solution - had to add CAP_AUDIT_WRITE into
CapabilityBoundingSet parameter in /lib/systemd/system/openvpn@.service.

[Bug 645449] Re: Ubiquity hangs at Keyboard layout/Ready when you are

2010-12-16 Thread Motin
Just ran into it myself installing on an Acer Travelmate 2310. Obnoxious
bug...

Workaround:
Applications - Accessories Terminal

Run command:
sudo killall ubiquity

In case you had some weird layout selected and for this reason you
cannot write this command, copy paste it... (Or go to System -
Preferences Keyboard and apply the default keyboard layout system
wide...)

Then run the installer again and you should be able to use the manual
partitioner mode to reset the installation to install again the same way
you were about to when it hung.

This is not a dupe of #251036 ... That treats a case about mismatching

[Bug 546653] Re: Dlink DWA-125 (07d1:3c0d) is processed by wrong module

2010-06-15 Thread Motin
When I have an issue with a device, I google the lsusb device id: 07d1:3c0d
This is the first hit on Google, so here is how to get the device working on
Lucid 10.04:

1. Download the RT3070USB(RT307x)-driver from
http://www.ralink.com.tw/support.php?s=2
Direct link:
http://www.ralink.com.tw/license_us.php?n=2p=0t=U0wyRnpjMlYwY3k4eU1ERXdMekEwTHpFMUwyUnZkMjVzYjJGa09Ea3pOREU1TnpBeE9TNWllakk5UFQxRVVFOWZVbFF6TURjd1gweHBiblY0VTFSQlgxWXlMak11TUM0eVh6SXdNVEF3TkRFeUM%3D

2. Extract the file, open a terminal and cd into it
tar -xvf DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100412.bz2
cd DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100412

3. Change a file according to instructions here:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/wireless-internet/161550-rt3070sta-module-license-unspecified-taints-kernel-solved.html
Under Here is what you need to do:
...until the instructions tells you to recompile the driver.

4. Compile and install the driver:
make
sudo make install

5. Add a missing symlink:
ln -s /etc/Wireless/RT3070STA/RT3070STA.dat
/etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat

6. Load the driver
sudo modprobe rt3070sta

This worked for me. Lucid 10.04 with all updates installed as of today.

[Bug 480596] Re: Incompatible extension 'Google Gears' in Firefox 3.5

2010-05-05 Thread Motin
Workaround for Karmic:

sudo apt-get install gears

sudo nano /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/extensions/{000a9d1c-beef-
4f90-9363-039d445309b8}/install.rdf

In this file, change 0.5.32 to 0.5.33

This will make firefox think you already have the 0.5.33 installed and
thus not try to upgrade to it (failing every time)

Since Google doesn't support gears any longer there will probably not be
any new updates anyway.

From http://tuxtweaks.com/2010/01/fix-google-gears-for-firefox-on-linux/
adapted for Karmic.

This is IMO the only way to have gears in Linux, since gears in Chrome
for Linux never will be available.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 367049 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367049

I realized that one trigger to this was my hardware! I run a Dell XPS M1330
and the media buttons seems to be activated by the heat or pressure of the
LCD when the lid is closed! That means that if I close the lid for a couple
of minutes, the lid will spam X with these events. I guess it has always
been so (when having media shortcuts active - which has not been too often
because of frequent breakages of these assignments between updates), but
only with the notify-osd has it become a CPU intensive issue which queues up
and imposes this annoying issue.

[Bug 460718] [NEW] [needs-packaging] VIRTUAL MIDI PIANO KEYBOARD

2009-10-25 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

VMPK is a MIDI events generator and receiver. Homepage:
http://vmpk.sourceforge.net/

It is a imo far better alternative than the rather antique vkeybd that
we have been stuck with the last years.

Debian stable and testing has packages, but they hasn't been included in
karmic for whatever reason. Does it need approval from a MOTU? Not sure
about the routines, but I used prevu to import the latest version to my
ppa: https://launchpad.net/~motin/+archive/ppa

Hope this helps and that it can be included in the universe soon! :)

I'll try to get alsa-plugins and pulseaudio with jack support in the ppa

2009-10-22 Thread Motin
Ok, now packages are available in the following PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~motin/+archive/until-jack-is-included-in-main

I added the PPA to my sources, apt-get updated but an apt-get upgrade currently
does not opt for installing the ~withjack1 appended versions
Maybe someone can help me with what version number I should use so that the
packages gets proposed for upgrade?

PS. I added a rebuild of xine as well (with the xine JACK plugin
included)

[Bug 413296] Re: Nvidia binary driver won't build with 2.6.31-rt kernel

2009-10-19 Thread Motin
Has anyone gotten a stable system yet? When _anyone_ with nvidia
graphics can, say, use Mixxx which requires accelerated graphics and
performs best with JACK in realtime mode, progress is made... But is
that reality yet?

Using the latest rt and 185 nvidia drivers from karmic repos and still
no-go with stable graphics... Tracking my progress and have collected
some valuable information in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8127639 on the subject.

[Bug 360590] Re: Please compile portaudio with Jack support

2009-10-18 Thread Motin
Rebuilding the ubuntu package with jack support compiled in:

sudo apt-get build-dep portaudio19
sudo apt-get install libjack0.100.0-dev
apt-get source portaudio19
cd portaudio*
gedit debian/rules

Here change the commented:

#ENABLE_JACK=no

to

ENABLE_JACK=no

(uncommented)

and also --with-jack=no to --with-jack=yes just below that line

Then rebuild and install:

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i libportaudio2_19+svn20090620-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i libportaudiocpp0_19+svn20090620-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i portaudio19-doc_19+svn20090620-0ubuntu1_all.deb

(More or less from the instructions for Gutsy in Bug #183011)

[Bug 431955] Re: xorg fails with module i810 error (module does not exist

2009-10-04 Thread Motin
Using intel driver did remove the message but not solve the issue at
least for me. It worked great before the latest updates... which makes
me ask if anyone know how to restore the packages to the working
versions?? What packages etc?

Please don't say that we have to wait for a fix to be released which
could take weeks, under which time the computer is basically useless
with a ultraslooow interface... A restore routine would
make it possible to use the computer and testing other stuff while
waiting for a fix at least...

(Hopefully someday we can have a feature like this:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/628/ making this kind of restore easy)

[Bug 368536] Re: Opening djvu files crashes evince

2009-10-03 Thread Motin
note: the file opens correctly with djview4
Well, on Jaunty only the first 88 pages are available here as well.

Are you sure this djvu file is complete? Can all pages be opened in a
djvu reader on Windows or similar?

I have no problems opening other djvu files in evince.

If this file is damaged, the bug should be renamed to Opening
incomplete/damaged djvu files crashes evince, which still would be
valid, as it would be about fixing evince to incorporate the same
behavior as djview, ie not crash but simply displaying the pages that
exists.

[Bug 128914] Re: As I added an application to a drawer in my quicklaunch bar an error occurred. All my quicklaunch and drawers went lost withous any chances to get them back.

2009-10-02 Thread Motin
This just happened to me yesterday. A pain to see all my custom panel
icons disappear in front of my eyes!

I hoped it was a temporary issue so I restarted but no everything still
gone... And with the restart no trace of the .xsession-errors neither.

I was adding the Timer applet to my panel, which used to be there but
wasn't at the time (I think I remember some sort of message about it not
being able to load when I booted many days ago...). The pasta water was
already boiling, so no time for research, just added the Timer applet
again, got that error message, and the Timer applet practically replaced
all my panel shortcuts (the other apps are still there though).

Running Jaunty...

2009-06-10 Thread Motin
Hey, I haven't been in to check in here for a while. The visible result
was that before the fix, the wireless would not activate itself
automatically after switching on and off the killswitch. It didn't fix
the issue of activating if the killswitch was enabled before suspend,
though. But one less regression is good as well.

Attaching hal.txt, though it should be identical to the one attached
above from an XPS 1330.

[Bug 385424] [NEW] [Dell Inc. XPS M1330] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-06-09 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

This error doesn't happen everytime, but maybe every tenth suspend
attempt. It will hang right before it usually switched down into suspend
mode, with the cursor blinking in a vt showing status messages about
firestarter and some bt_usb stuff (which it always also does when it
successfully suspends, why I believe it's not related).

Doesn't look like the other similar bugs out there, but either way I
need to report as new bug since I can't know before this is actually
reported and I see the actual attached debug info :P

[Bug 174809] Re: Nautilus using more and more memory (depending on the system up-time)

2009-06-06 Thread Motin
I just moved around a lot of files between external hard drives, around
400 GB all in all. It took all night, and now I have unmounted all
drives and thought I would be able to work as usual, but the system is
slow and unresponsive. Nautilus takes up a whopping 1.6 gb resident, and
2.9gb all in all (so 1.3 gb in swap).

Extract from top:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND

 5247 motin 20 0 2957m 1.6g 4972 S0 47.6 69:54.49 nautilus

 1115 motin 20 0 765m 473m 10m S4 13.4 113:13.34 firefox

I guess nautilus somewhere has cached the file lists of all transferred
files or similar, and hasn't released this memory even though even the
drives are unmounted and disconnected.

Attaching the output of pmap `pidof nautilus`. I have saved a the
contents of the files in /proc/`pidof nautilus`/ as well in case
something else needs to be attached (Please tell me what else is needed)

[Bug 174809] Re: Nautilus using more and more memory (depending on the system up-time)

2009-06-06 Thread Motin
I also have a core dump for nautilus in it's current state. Can't attach
it since it is 2.9 gb... I'll run any necessary report tool on it if
further information is needed.

Nautilus clearly has issues with memory hogging and there should now be
enough debug information available for this bug to be considered
confirmed.

[Bug 366408] Re: Documentation inconsistent with behaviour required to move a gnome-panel.

2009-05-23 Thread Motin
After upgrade to Jaunty I cannot move the panel in any way except for
making when they are not expanded automatically (which is not an
acceptable workaround). No combinations of mouse clicks, ctrl and/or alt
keys held down has been successful. Since this is prevalent on two
different machines only after Jaunty-upgrade others ought to be affected
by this as well. Is this the same issue or am I better off opening a new
bug item about it?

I am experiencing the same behavior right now. Very annoying. It's
notify-osd and X that takes up around 43% each of the cpu. The rest is
used by other apps, mostly firefox. Just ran that command as you can

[Bug 368556] [NEW] [dell-xps-specific?] ipw3945: Wireless is not activated after waking up from resume with kill switch enabled

2009-04-28 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

I need to manually right-click on nm-applet and de-check wireless and
check it again, only then will the wireless LED light up and the
wireless features start working again. Once I got a kernel panic while
doing this, so I am not too fond of that work-around.

This is NOT a duplicate of bug #193970 - this handles this specific case
and was opened by the suggestion of others in that bug's comments.

2009-04-28 Thread Motin
Adding hal to affected packages since it seems wrong for the killswitch
detection scripts to rely on /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-smbios --st_wwan
for dell laptops when that command always returns 0:

mo...@motin-xps:~$ sudo /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-smbios --st_wwan ; echo

mo...@motin-xps:~$ # turning off switch - wireless on

[Bug 367856] Re: Contact is lost with internal HSDPA/UMTS modem after some random period - a suspend and wake cycle or a restart is needed to be able to use the modem again

2009-04-28 Thread Motin
@Alexander: That serial log is what is included in the original
description. However, since I am now removing parts I don't want
treated, then I am removing that serial log... The issue seems to go
deeper than that and serial logging just proves that there is something
funky with the modem communication. I'll be back soon with an updated
description.

@smoke: Thanks, but that doesn't look like the same bug at all. I don't even
get past this part:
NetworkManager: info (ttyUSB0): found serial port (udev:GSM hal:GSM)
NetworkManager: info (ttyUSB0): new Modem device (driver: 'option')

Please open a new bug on your case if you are interested of it getting
solved. Thanks for the input otherwise!

[Bug 275471] Re: mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times

2009-04-28 Thread Motin
@jplotkin: Good attempt, but I enabled the setting, restarted tb and
still everytime I open a message with say a 6mb attachment, it downloads
it anew. Then, if I want to save it, I have to download it again...

I increased the size limit of saving for offline use from 1024 kb to
10240 kb to no avail - now after synchronization for offline use, going
offline then back online I can retrieve a cached version of the message
without having to re-download it. Seems to be a workaround more than a
solution though.

[Bug 367856] [NEW] Contact is lost with internal HSDPA/UMTS modem after some random period - a suspend and wake cycle or a restart is needed to be able to use the modem again

2009-04-27 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

This is so frustrating, loosing internet connection frequently:

Modem connection (and thus the current ppp connection) with the Dell XPS
M1330 internal UMTS / HSDPA modem silently drops dead at times (around
1-4 hours after connection, sometimes 8-10 hours afterwards, sometimes
0.5h etc - very randomly it seems, but certain for sure), with no other
choice than to suspend and resume the laptop to be able to connect
again. Not a favorable workaround since suspend fails around 1 time of
10...

At times that I just have noticed the internet connection dropping dead
I have looked in syslog, kern.log and dmesq for a trace of that
something particular was logged, but find nothing at all...

I tried enabling debug options in ppp option, but the connection process
stops before even attempting a ppp connection.

All I can come up with atm is a serial log for when it is not
successful:

And of course, when it is successful, it continues instead of the ERROR with:

and continues connections etc.

I have disabled the PIN because of another bug, where network manager
doesn't realize that the PIN is needed...

[Bug 193970] Re: iwl3945 | iwl4965: Wireless can't be activated after disabling kill switch

2009-04-26 Thread Motin
This is not fixed in Jaunty final, at least not for XPS M1330. After
having the killswitch enabled (wifi disabled) when waking up from
resume, I need to right-click network manager, deactive wireless, then
activate it again. Only then the wireless LED lights up again and
wireless networks are found. At times when doing this, kernel panic
occurs, so I am not to fond of the workaround...

This is the same behavior that existed in Intrepid before the SRU that
fixed in in the .27 kernel. This is a regression in other words.

@Matteo: Try right clicking as I described, it should work and is more
convenient than rmmod.

[Bug 366774] [NEW] Please add new sub-menu Set default connection in nm-applet menu with the current active connections, so that default route+DNS can be changed easily

2009-04-25 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

With it, we can have more flexible handling of several connections at
once as well as prevent the confusion that lead to the reporting of bug

By judging of the syslog message Policy set 'Connection name'

implemented in network manager and this bug should be easily fixable by
adding the menu and assign the appropriate instructions to the nm deamon
- no?

[Bug 278485] Re: If Ubuntu is connected to more than one network (e.g. GSM and wireless) but only GSM has internet access, OS is unable to access internet. NM version 0.7.

2009-04-25 Thread Motin
Short version:
The correct way in the latest versions of network manager is to mark which
connections that should be evaluated as default connections in the connections
editor. Marking as Fix Released.

Long version:
To my surprise (and maybe because of bad coverage in documentation, since it
seems many people have had this problem and fine-combed google to find a
solution), there exists an option that solves this bug in my case, where it
only is a problem at home when connecting to my local wireless network in order
to share my internet connection, access printer etc (ie not connecting to the
internet):

In network manager connections editor: Wireless - Mark my local
connection - Edit - IPv4 Settings - Routes - Use this connection
only for resources on its network (If enabled, this connection will
never be used as the default network connection)

This is a new feature since I started experiencing this issue, so I am
marking this bug as Fix Released and instead opening up new bugs for our
improvement suggestions.

Some new bugs just reported, in order to improve network manager to be more
intuitive and flexible on this point:
Bug #366774 - Please add new sub-menu Set default connection in nm-applet
menu with the current active connections, so that default route+DNS can be
changed easily
Bug #366777 - If the current connection provides internet access, don't change
default connection when more device connections become active (Requires that
bug #278488 is fixed first though)

Then, of course, some documentation / wiki entries about this would not
hurt!

[Bug 278485] Re: If Ubuntu is connected to more than one network (e.g. GSM and wireless) but only GSM has internet access, OS is unable to access internet. NM version 0.7.

2009-04-25 Thread Motin
As a follow-up on my original message from october 2008:

Adding an option like Replace default route upon connection (or
preferably Use this connection to access Internet through while
connected) to the network connection options and the configuration
guide would solve this issue.

Instead, we have a opposite option. I feel it would be more intuitive
to change the existing option to a checked-by-default option named Use
this connection as default connection (to access Internet) upon
connect.

Then of course, there is the problem of that when there are two
default connections, network manager seemingly randomly but
consistently chooses the wrong one as the de facto default route to
use...

Hoping on the two requested features come in later versions...

[Bug 181394] Re: Shift Switcher does not display minimized windows

2009-04-19 Thread Motin
I second a solution based on a stale image from just before it was
minimized + an overlay.

This is a major usability issue, and since we cannot wait for X11 to be
redesigned, we need to work with what we have so that Compiz windows
shifters are as usable as possible.

** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu)

This is very annoying, because it does not fit and you have to read the title
of the window (if you have display titles disabled and you have several
minimized windows you can only guess)

[Bug 362962] Re: Dangerous lie - Grub password not changed despite prompt Password changed!. Running from terminal reveals stty: standard input: Invalid argument

2009-04-17 Thread Motin
Note, when I changed it manually instead, in my menu.lst there was #
chainloader +1 on the same row as the password... like so:
password --md5 $1$/yk6//$.H7Fgtd5Eo9Hfjuy7dfh61# chainloader+1

[Bug 362962] [NEW] Dangerous lie - Grub password not changed despite prompt Password changed!. Running from terminal reveals stty: standard input: Invalid argument

2009-04-17 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: startupmanager

I can only fear how many that think they know their password for the
Grub menu (they set it with sum...), just to realized the day they need
to go into recovery mode that the password is wrong or even disabled!

Please at least fix a proper dialogue like Password change failed.
Thanks.

PS It doesn't matter how simple or advanced the password is

The full log when attempting password update:

with feedback it was set as Incomplete. I just tested this in Jaunty
RC and it has not been fixed still... Please don't set to Incomplete
again without specifying what we can do in order to make the report
complete. Thanks.

[Bug 309747] Re: 3d desktop effects is not (and has yet never been) stable for the majority of hardware/drivers that is used with Ubuntu - Compare with Mac OS X

2009-04-17 Thread Motin
That bug was marked as a duplicate of bug #254468, which is supposed to have
been fixed in Jaunty. Sounds promising.
Overall, with Jaunty's X 1.6 and the new Nvidia 180.x drivers, it will be very
interesting now to see if this bug is fixed for some Nvidia users at least.
I'll report back after 95+ hours more testing...

[Bug 300028] Re: [intrepid] Can only login using failsafe Gnome: unable to open file '/usr/share/apps/kxkb/ubuntu.xmodmap' for reading

2009-04-13 Thread Motin
I have found at least the real bug with my login. .xsession was empty (0
bytes), and the following introduced the bug again:

touch ~/.xsession

Removing it:

rm ~/.xsession

...then enables login again without using the failsafe option.

Is this the same for you others?

[Bug 300028] Re: [intrepid] Can only login using failsafe Gnome: unable to open file '/usr/share/apps/kxkb/ubuntu.xmodmap' for reading

2009-04-13 Thread Motin
Finally I have had time to look at this more.

I compared my install with a chrooted intrepid install with the same
packages as my system (so as to get a good reference to default
configuration files).

I also did the same with a new user on the system, comparing all user
settings directories.

In the end, I removed these three files:
~/.Xauthority
~/.Xscrc
~/.xsession

...logged out and could log back in without problems!

[Bug 303815] Re: 4[1266824.056544] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.27/drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c:311 serial_write+0xa4/0xb0 [usbserial]()

2009-03-18 Thread Motin
Also confirmed with a 413c:8138 Dell Computer Corp. Wireless 5520 Voda I
Mobile Broadband (3G HSDPA) Minicard EAP-SIM Port on a Dell XPS, running
Intrepid.

Happens at times (not always) when being connected and disconnecting
from the device. For me, it happens after a ppp0 connection has silently
stopped working, and I try to re-connect the device. Thus, it is
probably related to another bug, but I haven't isolated any particular
situation yet.
