I realized, that I don't have to reboot the machine. If xscan cannot find scanner devices, it is enough to suspend the laptop. I tried the newest 2.3.25-14 and a different installation of 64bit Ubuntu 13.10. Nothing changed. I think there is a new type of thing (probably event handler) in Ubuntu 13.10, because I reinstalled the oldest version and also did not work. With tdfx driver But 1280x1024 works. Somebody sent me an interlaced ModeLine. It worked once.
