[Bug 2061981] Re: chromium fails to start with non-standard home directory

2024-04-17 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Thanks!

As a note for self, I diffed snapd 2.61.2 and 2.62 and found in
cmd/snap-update-ns/user.go:

--->
+func isPlausibleHome(path string) error {
+   if path == "" {
+ return fmt.Errorf("cannot allow empty path")
+   }
+   if path != filepath.Clean(path) {
+ return fmt.Errorf("cannot allow unclean path")
+   }
+   if !filepath.IsAbs(path) {
+ return fmt.Errorf("cannot allow relative path")
+   }
+   const openFlags = syscall.O_NOFOLLOW | syscall.O_CLOEXEC |
syscall.O_DIRECTORY
+   fd, err := sysOpen(path, openFlags, 0)
+   if err != nil {
+   return err
+   }
+   sysClose(fd)
+   return nil
+}
<---

--->
+   if err := isPlausibleHome(realHome); err != nil {
+ realHomeError = fmt.Errorf("cannot use invalid home directory
%q: %v", realHome, err)
<---

It remains to be ascertained whether this lack of permission always
existed but didn't cause the launch of the snap to fail.

[Bug 2061981] Re: chromium fails to start with non-standard home directory

2024-04-17 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Thank you for the additional information.

enaira05, you can disconnect them with

  snap disconnect chromium:dot-local-share-applications
  snap disconnect chromium:dot-local-share-icons

wouterd, glad to hear that solves your problem.

The interface has been present for a long time. The Chromium update I
released yesterday was just a new upstream release and as such
introduces nothing that would trigger such an error.

On my side I can see in 'snap changes'

  1618 Donetoday at 12:40 CEST today at 12:43 CEST Auto-refresh
snap "snapd"

So I'm placing my bets on that change.

Are you able to 'snap revert snapd' for a test? If yes, please remember
to reconnect the interfaces for the test.

password and click close.

A dialog appears saying that

> To install software and updates from newly added or changed sources,
you have to reload the information about available software.

with a reload and a close button.

Press the right arrow key and close will be selected in the interface,
evidenced by a faint border around that button. Press the enter key.

- Expected: The close button becomes dark for a brief moment, indicating that
it has been pressed, and the program exits immediately.
- Observed: The reload button becomes dark for a brief moment, indicating that
it has been pressed, and the program starts updating the cache.

Ubuntu only maintains Chromium. Chrome is proprietary software provided
directly by Google so you need to file a report with them.

[Bug 2061850] [NEW] Can't authenticate in TTY after installing authd, but sudo works

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu Noble, I install authd 0.2.1, switch to a different TTY and
try to log in.

I enter my user name and I am asked

> Select your provider
>
> 1: local

I click and am asked for the password. After entering it I
expect to eventually get a shell, but after installing Authd I can wait
minutes and end up with nothing (as if it were validating the password).

If I enter wrong credentials I get "login incorrect" and a new user name
prompt, which is the correct behavior.

I get the same question asked when using 'sudo' but there it works.

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
I got a Xenial ISO and run it in a virtual machine.

Enabled proposed and now upgrading update-manager forces the
installation of a newer ubuntu-advantage-tools:

--->
$ sudo apt install update-manager --verbose-versions
...
The following packages will be upgraded:
   python3-update-manager (1:16.04.17 => 1:16.04.21)
   ubuntu-advantage-tools (10ubuntu0.16.04.1 => 31.2.2~16.04)
   update-manager (1:16.04.17 => 1:16.04.21)
   update-manager-core (1:16.04.17 => 1:16.04.21)
<---

I confirm then that launching and finishing update-manager without
internet connection produces no error any more.

[Bug 2045918] Re: [SRU] Fix crash caused by updating update-manager from inside itself

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
In Xenial virtual machine, I had .17 in xenial-updates installed,
started update-manager from a terminal, selected 'Software Updater' in
the list and clicked 'Install now'.

The installation completed successfully and the view was automatically
recalculated. The application didn't crash (no tracebacks in the
terminal window) and 'apt policy update-manager' says that the installed
version is .21.

[Bug 1990450] Re: Show potential Ubuntu Pro updates and apt news messages

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
In a Xenial virtual machine, installed update-manager from proposed
(.21), confirmed there were updates available with pro security-status.

With unattached machine, opened update-manager and confirmed the 'Ubuntu
Pro security updates (Enable in Settings...)' section at the bottom of
the updates list.

I attached the machine to Pro, restarted update-manager and verified
that the section was now 'Ubuntu Pro security updates' with installable
Pro packages.

The news were too old according to motd.ubuntu.com and therefore I did
the Nginx procedure as in #31 and confirmed that a news section shows up
with the set up message.

[Bug 2058133] Re: [SRU] update-manager crashes when ua security-status response is an error

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
SRU Team: The phasing in 22.04 was blocked due to LP:2004482. That is
not a problem of update-manager though, but caused by a namespace
conflict between ubuntu-advantage-tools and opcua-client-gui when
installed via Pip[1].

I think therefore that the phasing should be continued.

[Bug 2054197] Re: update-manager crashed with TypeError in _look_busy(): constructor returned NULL

2024-04-15 Thread Nathan Teodosio
1. Testing that the other way around (3->4), I get

--->
% ./update-manager --data-dir=$PWD/data
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/home/nteodosio/canonical/ubuntu-pro/update-manager/./update-manager",

require_version
raise ValueError('Namespace %s is already loaded with version %s' %
ValueError: Namespace Gdk is already loaded with version 3.0
<---

So I think this would just introduce such error in the other direction
(4->3).

2. Actually the new_from_name constructor has different signatures in
Gdk 3 and 4.

I also couldn't reproduce the issue in an unaltered Noble beta ISO.

As such, I suggest to let this sit unattended until confirmed.

[Bug 2054197] Re: update-manager crashed with TypeError in _look_busy(): constructor returned NULL

2024-04-15 Thread Nathan Teodosio
I can't reproduce this exact error, but I do get an error if the Gdk
imported is version 4:

>>> from gi.repository import Gdk
:1: PyGIWarning: Gdk was imported without specifying a version first.
Use gi.require_version('Gdk', '4.0') before import to ensure that the right
version gets loaded.
>>> Gdk.Cursor.new(Gdk.CursorType.WATCH)
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "", line 1, in
AttributeError: type object 'Cursor' has no attribute 'new'. Did you mean:
'newv'?

After all the new constructor only exists in Gdk 3.

I see two possible solutions:

1. Do as suggested and require the specific Gdk version with
   gi.require_version('Gdk', '3.0')

2. Use a constructor that exists in both Gdk versions:
   Gdk.Cursor.new_from_name("wait", None)

Yep, understood - but again, I'm not understanding why. AFAICS, there
are no files with the same names or contents between those packages.

OK, so it's not related to the recent v3 archive changes then.

I have a fairly recent Debian VM locally - I tried reproducing the problem
there but had no luck, it always starts fine and runs fine. Tried running it
under valgrind too just in case, but again nothing.

We also don't see this issue on Fedora, CentOS or RHEL and SuSE are
also not reporting this. Since (I think) all Debian versions are fine (can we
confirm?) it might be a Ubuntu-specific issue. Are there patches or some
global compiler option(s) unique to Ubuntu versions where this is failing?
Otherwise, I'm fresh out of ideas.

I can't really justify time chasing this any further - I think we'll need some
assistance from Ubuntu folk to help us gain additional insights.

cheers.

[Bug 2060730] Re: totem cannot install codecs via packagekit

2024-04-12 Thread Nathan Teodosio
OK, I was also missing gstreamer1.0-packagekit.

Summary is:

For reproducing that exact error, have neither gstreamer1.0-libav nor
gstreamer-1.0-plugins-bad nor gstreamer-1.0-packagekit.

To fix the error, one needs both gstreamer1.0-packagekit and gnome-
software, then hitting "Find in Software" will open gnome-software with
suggestions (as attached).

If I install gnome-software and try again, I get a prompt:

With a button to "Find in Software". Clicking it does nothing though.

And even before clicking anything on the prompt, '/usr/bin/gnome-
software --gapplication-service' is registered in ps.

[Bug 2061075] [NEW] firefox, chromium-browser are not merely a transitional packages

2024-04-12 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Public bug reported:

They not only install the corresponding snap but also at least have some
hooks to update-alternatives and also provide www-browser, x-www-

The packages' description might lead one to remove them expecting no
side effects:

[Bug 2060915] [NEW] Comments in source files flood "other software"

2024-04-11 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Public bug reported:

Reproduction case:

Add the attached source file to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. You don't need
to 'apt update' for this test.

Open software-properties-gtk.

Issue:

All the comments at the top of the file are displayed, flooding the
interface.

Limiting the number of comment lines displayed and only displaying the
full comments in a tool tip (GTK.Tree has a couple of set_tooltip
functions) may result in a better user interface.

** Affects: software-properties (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 2050884] Re: Ubuntu Metrics server is not accepting reports

2024-04-10 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Corrado, the released fix was only for the consumer (gnome-initial-
setup).

I think that, if you chose to send system information to Canonical and
it failed, which is at the moment guaranteed to happen because the
service is not up yet, ubuntu-report schedules a new attempt to send the
report.

If that is ad infinitum or spams your system logs, please file a new bug
against ubuntu-report[1].

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Bryant
Upstream Gnome 46 made a lot of changes recently to improve performance
and input lag in Gnome-Terminal. Those changes are separate from this
bug. I don't know whether those changes were backported to Ubuntu 22.04,
which ships Gnome 42. That's a question for Daniel or someone else at
Canonical.

See https://bxt.rs/blog/just-how-much-faster-are-the-gnome-46-terminals/
and note that the graphs are only talking about lag in the neighborhood
of 40-50ms, which is probably just barely perceptible.

[Bug 2047778] Re: Software Updater unable to cancel Ubuntu Pro upgrade

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Teodosio
>-- This is an off-topic comment --<

Normally at the bottom of Canonical managed web-pages you find a
"support" or "report a bug with this site" button.

It is admittedly ironic that you will need an account in Ubuntu One to
report a bug with it, but well, you do already have one so your concerns
are welcome there[1]. Please note that ideally in this bug task this
discussion would not exist. (:

[Bug 2059796] Re: Other Software > Remove button doesn't work

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Hi Paride, thanks for having a look.

I'm not the reporter of the bug, but yes I'd also call that a
reproducer.

The expected behavior is that, after authentication,

(1) it is immediately gone from software properties and
(2) Apt no longer pulls from that repository: 'apt update --print-uris' no
longer reports the just removed repository because the corresponding file in is
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ is either gone or empty.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Bryant
Hi Daniel,

No, not multi-GPU. It's an AMD system with no integrated graphics and
only one Nvidia card. One monitor plugged in, one TV plugged in to that
card via HDMI. But the TV is usually turned off, and disabled in
Settings | Displays. Running Xorg, not Wayland.

This doesn't look like bug 1876632; it's not suspend- or VT-switch-
related. Maybe I shouldn't have called it "corruption"; what I'm seeing
looks like gnome-terminal just... deciding not to render something that
it should; characters don't echo. No wild colors or randomized textures
or anything like that. Seems like either a problem within gnome-
terminal, or GPU command buffers just getting dropped on the floor.
Awfully similar to this bug.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-08 Thread Nathan Bryant
threadbareobserve, the nvidia driver can be downgraded to 535 without
too much work. I'd make sure all the related packages are removed before
installing 535.

Might help the developers to know what version of Ubuntu you're running.

I'm running a 22.04 desktop with a 4070 card, and the PPA does *not* fix
the problem for me. It removes the lag, but that means the corrupted
screen just happens faster. This is a bit intermittent and hard to pin
down, but I've particularly noticed this after attempting to paste text
into Gnome-Terminal; only the first few pasted characters might be
echoed, then it gets into a state where keyboard input is processed but
not all of it is echoed.

[Bug 2047778] Re: Software Updater unable to cancel Ubuntu Pro upgrade

2024-04-08 Thread Nathan Teodosio
--> c_starchaser

> By the way, logging in now has a nasty thing about something called
Ubuntu One... Another nag? Question is do you have One or not?

Can you please be more specific? Logging in where, in Ubuntu, in a
Ubuntu web-site, ...? If that is not update-manager, please open a bug
for the corresponding software.

Also, the originally described issue, namely of the program offering
exclusively Ubuntu Pro updates when the machine was not registered to
Ubuntu Pro, has been fixed, so I'm marking the bug task as "fix
released". If you still observe the unintended behavior despite having
an up to date update-manager, please revert it back to "confirmed".

--> michel.ekimia

Thanks for the screen shot, for future ones you can always prefix
'LANG=' (here 'LANG= update-manager') to the command so that it uses the
default locale, that will help people to understand it more easily.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-06 Thread Nathan Bryant
The fix in the PPA is not working for me on Jammy: the lag may be gone,
but some rendering is intermittently missed.

Some info:

linux-image-6.5.0-27-generic 6.5.0-27.28~22.04.1
nvidia-driver-550 550.67-0ubuntu1.22.04.1

Maybe related in journalctl:

[:0x5b2bd9670320] is on because it needs an

I think something similar was happening on nvidia-driver-535; I upgraded
to 550 in an attempt to fix this.

[Bug 2060164] [NEW] clock time acts weird on unusual input

2024-04-03 Thread Nathan Hinton
Public bug reported:

When trying to set a timer there is unexpected behavior as I enter
values.

Description:Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS
Release:22.04

gnome-clocks (installed via snap)
gnome-clocks   45.0465latest/stable
canonical✓ -

I set a timer for 22 minutes and then accidentally hit an extra 2 which made
the timer change to 3 hours and 42 minutes. I realize that this is 222 minutes
however it caused me confusion when trying to fix it as explained below.

How to reproduce the bug:
select the seconds spot with the the cursor in the left side. Enter a 9. It
looks like you are entering 90 seconds however what actually happens is you are
entering 900 seconds now.

What I expected:
I expect the cursor to be in overwrite mode so that it would remove the 0 on
the side and change the number from "00" to "90". To keep the ability to enter
larger numbers like "123" change the cursor mode to insert mode when it reaches
the right side of the input box

[Bug 2029473] Re: Backport Ubuntu Pro to Xenial

2024-04-03 Thread Nathan Teodosio
I installed .13 from proposed.

Ensured that the machine wasn't attached to ubuntu pro with

$ pro status

Launched software-properties-gtk, went to the Ubuntu Pro tab, which
stated 'This machine is not covered by an Ubuntu Pro subscription',
displayed a 'Enable Ubuntu Pro' button and had the service controls
inactive.

Clicked 'Enable Ubuntu Pro' and entered the PIN in
ubuntu.com/pro/attach, after some seconds the software-properties UI
updated and displayed a green mark and 'Valid token' label, I clicked
'Confirm', entered password at the prompt, the spinner showed up in
place of the mark/label, once the attachment job was done the dialog was
autoclosed.

The UI then stated 'Ubuntu Pro support is enabled' and under Security
'ESM Infra', 'ESM Apps' and 'Kernel Livepatch' were displayed an
enabled, with '$ pro status' output matching the UI.

Enabled and disabled Infra in the UI and confirmed that the 'pro status'
changed accordingly.

Clicked 'Disable Ubuntu Pro', got asked for confirmation and password,
confirmed that the UI is back to the original state and that 'pro
status' confirmed the system wasn't attached to Ubuntu Pro anymore.

The same testcase also succeeded for the 'Or add token manually' option.
