[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Bryant
Upstream Gnome 46 made a lot of changes recently to improve performance
and input lag in Gnome-Terminal. Those changes are separate from this
bug. I don't know whether those changes were backported to Ubuntu 22.04,
which ships Gnome 42. That's a question for Daniel or someone else at
Canonical.

See https://bxt.rs/blog/just-how-much-faster-are-the-gnome-46-terminals/
and note that the graphs are only talking about lag in the neighborhood
of 40-50ms, which is probably just barely perceptible.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-09 Thread Nathan Bryant
Hi Daniel,

No, not multi-GPU. It's an AMD system with no integrated graphics and
only one Nvidia card. One monitor plugged in, one TV plugged in to that
card via HDMI. But the TV is usually turned off, and disabled in
Settings | Displays. Running Xorg, not Wayland.

This doesn't look like bug 1876632; it's not suspend- or VT-switch-
related. Maybe I shouldn't have called it "corruption"; what I'm seeing
looks like gnome-terminal just... deciding not to render something that
it should; characters don't echo. No wild colors or randomized textures
or anything like that. Seems like either a problem within gnome-
terminal, or GPU command buffers just getting dropped on the floor.
Awfully similar to this bug.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-08 Thread Nathan Bryant
threadbareobserve, the nvidia driver can be downgraded to 535 without
too much work. I'd make sure all the related packages are removed before
installing 535.

Might help the developers to know what version of Ubuntu you're running.

I'm running a 22.04 desktop with a 4070 card, and the PPA does *not* fix
the problem for me. It removes the lag, but that means the corrupted
screen just happens faster. This is a bit intermittent and hard to pin
down, but I've particularly noticed this after attempting to paste text
into Gnome-Terminal; only the first few pasted characters might be
echoed, then it gets into a state where keyboard input is processed but
not all of it is echoed.

Everyone's been discussing bug 2007742 as something that causes only log
spam, no other issues. My system is still failing to update the screen
after keypresses in gnome-terminal. So maybe those log messages aren't
relevant, but it looks like this bug 2059847 is not fully & correctly
fixed.

2024-04-06 Thread Nathan Bryant
The fix in the PPA is not working for me on Jammy: the lag may be gone,
but some rendering is intermittently missed.

Some info:

linux-image-6.5.0-27-generic 6.5.0-27.28~22.04.1
nvidia-driver-550 550.67-0ubuntu1.22.04.1

Maybe related in journalctl:

I think something similar was happening on nvidia-driver-535; I upgraded

2021-07-04 Thread Nathan Bryant
I was able to get my hands on a card to upgrade from a GTX 1070 to an
RTX 3060 Ti LHR (Low Hash Rate). Assuming this driver version to be
necessary for the new LHR cards but I did not test the previous version,
so that might not be correct.

The basic GNOME desktop and Chromium browser seem to work.

[Bug 1879401] Re: [XPS 13 7390 2-in-1, Intel Icelake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] sound rarely works

2020-08-05 Thread Nathan Bryant
I don't know if it's relevant; it may very well not be, because after
this kernel message (described below) things sometimes succeed, or
sometimes fail.

But I noticed that there's a new feature in drm-tip (but not in mainline
5.8), for HDMI silent stream audio. I turned it on. It seems to work
well, but only if power_save=0 is also specified. So I'm booting with
two additional options on the kernel commandline:
snd_hda_intel.power_save=0 snd_hda_codec_hdmi.enable_silent_stream=Y

When configured like this, it seems like 100% of the time there is this
message when booting with HDMI already plugged in:

snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: Monitor plugged-in, Failed to power up
codec ret=[-13]

I'm attaching the full dmesg from a run with debug turned on. This
particular run seemed to fail to output audio at first, then it
eventually succeeded after changing the output source in sound settings
a few times. So I'll attach two files from the same bootup of this
machine, if you do a "diff" between them you will see that "success"
simply picks up where "failed" left off. It didn't start succeeding
until sometime during the second file, I think.

2020-06-19 Thread Nathan Bryant
@kaihengfeng,

Sure. I'm attaching the "dmesg -H" output from a run that worked.

My odds of success lately have been a bit better than "rarely works",
but I still often need a few retries to get it working. A "retry" could
mean unplugging and re-plugging the hub or HDMI cable, or simply
suspending and resuming the laptop.

HDMI port detection has been flaky on most kernels I've tried. This
means that sometimes I will get neither video nor audio, and will have
to retry. Other times, I will get video but no audio.

What happened *this* time was that I had to retry twice to get video,
but the first successful attempt which had video, also had audio.

I have another system that I connect to this TV. It's built around an
old Haswell, Z87-chipset desktop motherboard. I installed Linux on it
today, to test this, and so far it seems to work fine.

I noticed that the Haswell doesn't even support ASPM; the BIOS either
doesn't implement the required ACPI support, or it's disabled in one of
the menus. Is that typical of more recent (Skylake and up) desktop
boards?

In any case, I intend to run this laptop on 5.6.0-1010-oem for the next
week or two with pcie_aspm.policy=performance and see if the issue
resurfaces. So far, so good.

The ASPM policy can also be set at runtime; for example:
echo performance | sudo tee /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy

By the way, the TV I'm connecting to is an LG C9 running firmware
04.71.25 (current as of this writing) which is further connected to a
Sony STR-DH750 via HDMI ARC. I connect the laptop via the TV, not the
receiver, and problem persists whether TV is on or off.

[Bug 1879401] Re: [XPS 13 7390 2-in-1, Intel Icelake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] sound rarely works

2020-05-21 Thread Nathan Bryant
I tested the PPA. It doesn't help. If anything, it might make things a
bit worse.

Also, I can now confirm that I spoke a bit too soon in comment #19 when
I said "linux-image-5.4.0-32-generic after removing kernel command line
pcie_aspm.policy=powersupersave --> seems better so far". That
configuration does seem a bit better, but exhibited the problem again a
few times just now.

I'm not even sure this is a userspace problem. A week or two ago I
ripped out pulseaudio and the rest of the ALSA userspace stack and
replaced it with the packages from Eoan. That was on an older kernel but
it didn't help.

I'm having trouble coming up with a pin to get the PPA to install with
apt update && apt upgrade. Why doesn't this work?

nbryant@atlantis:/etc/apt/preferences.d$ cat fix

[Bug 1879401] Re: [XPS 13 7390 2-in-1, Intel Icelake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] sound rarely works

2020-05-19 Thread Nathan Bryant
I did some more testing today:

* linux-image-5.4.0-31-generic --> not any better

* linux-image-5.4.0-32-generic --> not any better

* linux-image-5.6.0-1010-oem after removing kernel command line
pcie_aspm.policy=powersupersave --> not any better

* linux-image-5.4.0-32-generic after removing kernel command line
pcie_aspm.policy=powersupersave --> seems better so far, but of course
this is something of an intermittent problem, so time will tell.
However, there is still a very reproducible similar problem, in that any
time I switch to surround sound mode and back to stereo that breaks it
permanently.

2020-05-19 Thread Nathan Bryant
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I have an Ice Lake laptop (Dell 7390 2-in-one) which I am connecting to
a TV over HDMI via a Novoo USB-C multiport adapter. This is not a
Thunderbolt device, it is just USB-C.

It seemed like things used to work fine before I upgraded this system
from Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04, although I couldn't say for certain at this
point. But I'm having a ton of difficulty getting audio output over
HDMI. Getting it to work requires a lot of retries to reinitialize the
device (either by suspending/resuming the laptop, or plugging/unplugging
the HDMI cable and/or the multiport adapter). It does work sometimes,
but my success rate is very low at this point.

Even when it does work, it's brittle: any change to the output port (to
speaker and back to HDMI, or from stereo to surround and back) will
often break the audio. This fact seems to suggest that the problem
doesn't have anything to do with the low-level initialization of the
HDMI port; I'd be looking at some mid-layer code.

To be clear, there doesn't seem to be any particular symptom, or
anything of interest in the logs, other than an absence of sound output.

[Bug 1879401] [NEW] [XPS 13 7390 2-in-1, Intel Icelake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] sound rarely works

2020-05-18 Thread Nathan Bryant
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1482924] Re: Regressions due to USN-2696-1

2015-09-29 Thread Nathan Bryant
JDK6 is not working as expected. See my test programs above posted in
previous comments.

Actual result:

---
$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_36"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.13.8)
(6b36-1.13.8-0ubuntu2~ppa2~snapshot20150911020748)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.25-b01, mixed mode)
$ java TLSVersions

Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_36TLS TLSv1
Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_36SSL TLSv1
---

Expected result:

---
$ java TLSVersions
java.vendor java.versionproto enabledProtocols
Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_36TLSv1.2
java.security.NoSuchAlgorithmException: TLSv1.2 SSLContext not available

Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_36TLS TLSv1,TLSv1.1
Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_36SSL TLSv1
---

A failure to connect result can also be seen if you take TLSSimple.java
and edit socketFactory.createSocket( "www.google.com"... to point to
some server that has TLSv1.0 entirely disabled. The point is that
SSLContext.getInstance( "TLS" ) should return a context that supports a
v1.1 hello because SSLContext.getInstance( "TLS" ) is not version-
specific and should return a default instance. This is the approach that
JDK7 has taken.

Tiago--thanks, I've just found some time to test this again. We have
some servers with TLSv1.0 disabled now, and I've tested your Precise
JDK7 package against those--this works, the old package does not connect
and the new package connects.

I will follow up with a JDK6 test.

[Bug 1482924] Re: Regressions due to USN-2696-1

2015-08-27 Thread Nathan Bryant
I should clarify that my tests results for 6b36-1.13.8-0ubuntu1 are
based on a modified java.security file which removed SSLv3 from the
jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms property. That may be the reason why they
show SSLv3 as a default-enabled algorithm.

Also, I was finally able to test your Wily package (I had to install an
image in VirtualBox.) Unlike the openjdk-6 package from the PPA, it
works as expected in the sense that TLSv1.2 is on by default:

nbryant@wily:~$ java -version
java version "1.7.0_79"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.5.6) (7u79-2.5.6-1ubuntu1~ppa3)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.79-b02, mixed mode)
nbryant@wily:~$ java TLSVersions
java.vendor java.versionproto enabledProtocols
Oracle Corporation 1.7.0_79TLSv1.2 SSLv3,TLSv1,TLSv1.1,TLSv1.2
Oracle Corporation 1.7.0_79TLSv1.1 SSLv3,TLSv1,TLSv1.1
Oracle Corporation 1.7.0_79TLSv1 SSLv3,TLSv1
Oracle Corporation 1.7.0_79TLS SSLv3,TLSv1,TLSv1.1,TLSv1.2
Oracle Corporation 1.7.0_79SSL SSLv3,TLSv1,TLSv1.1,TLSv1.2

This is a little weird though, SSLv3 is on, even though I have this in
java.security:

jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms=SSLv3, DH keySize < 768

[Bug 1482924] Re: Regressions due to USN-2696-1

2015-08-25 Thread Nathan Bryant
See this issue to drop RC4 support in the Chromium project:
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=375342

Lots of good discussion but especially comment #44, #49, and perhaps the
real key takeaway is comment #53:

-- quote --
#53 t...@ritter.vg
On the topic of PCI and CVSS scores, I talked with a QSA. Because of the 4.3
scores and general badness, PCI 3.1 was released recently and marks TLS 1.0 and
below as unacceptable. Anyone wanting to use it must document a Risk
Mitigation and Migration Plan. Which people do by saying "We have clients who
haven't upgraded." But in newly deployed infrastructure the PCI Council is
actually saying that they can't deploy TLS 1.0 or below at all, and to strand
any older clients.

I don't imagine this significantly affects opinions on UI treatment
(including keeping the EV badging), but wanted to add some context I
learned today.

See also:
https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/documents/Migrating_from_SSL_Early_TLS_Information_Supplement_v1.pdf
-- end quote--

Thus, if openjdk-6 and -7 continue to send a TLSv1.0 ClientHello by
default, they soon risk losing connectivity to significant portions of
the secure WWW. As a PCI compliant shop, this is already an issue here
and we have some upcoming deadlines to make some changes.

At the moment, I have seen 3 specific examples of broken connectivity:
(1) web service gateway for an airline reservation system which refuses to
negotiate CBC unless protocol level is TLSv1.1 or newer. This site is behind a
source-IP based packet filter so I can't have anyone else test against it.
(2) The public-facing internet-booking website for an airline (VA), which
refuses to negotiate CBC at all, even on TLSv1.2, and does not support AEAD
ciphers. The only option for this one is RC4
(3) The SOAP service endpoint for a payment service provider; this one is a lot
like (2) - only RC4. This is also behind a source IP filter

Tiago, under the circumstances, what kind of test code would you like to
see? It is not possible to write a pure-Java test client and server
which mimics the behavior of example (1), because an SSLServerSocket
only enables/disables cipher suites globally across all protocol levels.

I'm not sure what can responsibly be done about examples like (2) and
(3), but it seems probably that sites like example (1) will become more
common.

[Bug 1482924] Re: Regressions due to USN-2696-1

2015-08-13 Thread Nathan Bryant
Stay tuned, I'll have something a little later. In the meantime I found
this:

https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-2210924

(backport request for AEAD ciphers to JDK7 - closed as Won't Fix)

If that remains the decision, it would at least be nice to see the
default ClientHello changed from 1.0 1.2 to enable IV workaround

[Bug 1482924] Re: Regressions due to USN-2696-1

2015-08-12 Thread Nathan Bryant
Test results suggest that openjdk-6 supports the TLSv1.2 ClientHello but
not the new TLSv1.2 cipher suites. The following is from a VM launched
with -Djavax.net.debug=all -Dhttps.protocols=TLSv1.2:

Also affects JDK6; the situation is a little worse on 6, which does not
support anything newer than TLS1.0

[Bug 1482924] Re: Regressions due to USN-2696-1

2015-08-08 Thread Nathan Bryant
** Description changed:

Due to [CBCATT], some server administrators (including the webservices
gateway for a major airline reservations provider) choose to disable CBC
ciphersuites unless the protocol level is TLSv1.1 or later; [TLS1.1]
introduced an explicit CBC IV to guard against such attacks. (See
[TLS1.1] section 1.1) On such servers, disabling all CBC ciphersuites
may leave only RC4 as a trusted cipher.

JDK7 introduced support for TLSv1.2, but chose not to enable it by
default, due to a policy of not changing such defaults in minor
revisions. JDK8 enables TLSv1.2 by default.

- On Ubuntu, due to USN-2696-1, starting with the openjdk-7-jre-
- 7u79-2.5.6-0ubuntu1.12.04.1 package, RC4 is disabled by default but the
- protocol default remains TLSv1.0.
+ On Ubuntu, due to USN-2696-1, starting with the
openjdk-7-jre-7u79-2.5.6-0ubuntu1.12.04.1 package, RC4 is disabled by default
but the protocol default remains TLSv1.0. This can leave no remaining trusted
ciphers, and
+ negotiation can fail.

Workaround: on OpenJDK7, it is possible to either use
  SSLContext.getInstance("TLSv1.2") or re-enable RC4 via
SSLSocket.setEnabledCipherSuites(), but neither workaround is viable if
one doesn't have access to 3rd-party source code.

[Bug 1482924] [NEW] Regressions due to USN-2696-1

2015-08-08 Thread Nathan Bryant
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu, due to USN-2696-1, starting with the
openjdk-7-jre-7u79-2.5.6-0ubuntu1.12.04.1 package, RC4 is disabled by default
but the protocol default remains TLSv1.0. This can leave no remaining trusted
ciphers, and
negotiation can fail.

Workaround: on OpenJDK7, it is possible to either use
SSLContext.getInstance("TLSv1.2") or re-enable RC4 via
SSLSocket.setEnabledCipherSuites(), but neither workaround is viable if
one doesn't have access to 3rd-party source code.
