[Bug 1719706] Re: Mouse scrollwheel switches workspaces when mouse against the left edge of screen

2017-10-01 Thread Nathan Haines
Right. At the Ubuntu Rally in NYC, everyone seemed to think that it was
nice to have a quick way to switch resources, but that the entire left
edge of the screen triggering this behavior (even when specific icons
were highlighted) was non-intuitive.

[Bug 1595017] Re: u-wallpapers include Creative Commons v2 licenses which are controversial

2017-04-05 Thread Nathan Haines
No one "signs" to the contest, there's a function of Flickr groups that
must be read and clicked-through before joining the group and submitting
images, although it's clear that nobody actually does this, and there is
no way to "sign" anything. On top of that, Flickr already gives a
specific set of licenses: None, Public Domain, CC-BY v2, CC-BY-NC v2,
CC-BY-SA v2, and CC-BY-NC-SA v2.

The only way we could distribute the images under a different license is
if the authors stated the license in the description or something.

[Bug 1595017] Re: u-wallpapers include Creative Commons v2 licenses which are controversial

2017-03-28 Thread Nathan Haines
I'm not sure I've seen that wiki page before (or long enough ago that
I've forgotten it), so thank you for that! It should be linked from the
FreeCultureShowcase page for sure.

I don't mind CC-* 3.0, (I'm actually all for 4.0!) but we use Yahoo to
gather photos, and Yahoo specifically references CC-BY 2.0 and CC-BY-SA
2.0, so it's not possible to get differently licensed photos that way.
We could ask photographers to place an alternate license in the photo
description, but I'm concerned that most submitters aren't reading the
licensing guidelines in the first place before submitting. Almost all
of the maintenance work each cycle during the contest is checking every
entry by hand for proper licensing.

On the other hand, I have a very detailed, modular form letter
explaining licenses that--to my surprise--has only been met with
appreciation. So maybe we could require an explicit license. But it
will probably triple the amount of work required in administering the
contest.

[Bug 1676133] Re: Ubuntu 17.04 Free Culture Showcase community wallpapers

2017-03-28 Thread Nathan Haines
Thanks, Iain! I did a revert and pull from my branch and reapplied my
changes before uploading, and must've missed debian/ubuntu-wallpapers-
zesty.install somehow (because I have the file right here!) but forgot
to update debian/control again. I'll stick that in my documentation,
thanks!

I don't mind CC-* 3.0, (I'm all for 4.0!) but Yahoo specifically
references 2.0, and I'm concerned that most submitters aren't reading
the licensing guidelines in the first place before submitting. I'll
give this a think before the next contest.

[Bug 1581713] Re: Ubuntu Software asks for an Ubuntu Single Sign-On account to remove a snap

2016-05-23 Thread Nathan Haines
This behavior is consistent with Ubuntu Software Centre. Canonical
works with third-party software providers to provide payment and hosting
for commericial software in the partner repository. In Ubuntu 16.04
LTS, this is being replaced by the Ubuntu App Store which powers the
snap repository's backend.

While the command line tools provide access to free-of-charge snaps
without issue, the Ubuntu Software store uses Ubuntu One to handle
payment processing and order history (so that previous purchases can be
downloaded and installed on any number of systems that you own).

So this is an implementation detail that matches the behavior of the
software being replaced by Ubuntu Software.

[Bug 1464159] [NEW] Ubuntu Browser doesn't present system language to websites.

2015-06-11 Thread Nathan Haines
Public bug reported:

I created a webapp for the secure email service Tutanota. One nice
feature is that it is localized in several different lanaguages and it
automatically presents its interface in the user's preferred language.

Unfortunately, the Ubuntu browser does not present the Accept-Language
header and Tutanota does not offer language as a settings option.

I think it would be optimal if the browser uses the system language as
the Accept-Language header (and would be awesome if it used the active
keyboard layout options to create a list of additional languages), and
of course even better if the browser settings page also allowed
customization as well.

More information on this header is available here:

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-03-29 Thread Nathan Haines
My symptoms match the above, but most importantly, booting from a daily
trusty image, Bluetooth works perfectly, while on the desktop it stopped
working after the upgrade.

[Bug 1236397] Re: Maguro: BLuetooth says None Detected in the ui but cli hcitool shows device

2013-10-15 Thread Nathan Haines
hciconfig -a shows the Bluetooth adapter, not the device trying to pair.
To the surprise of no one, the phone reports itself as a computer-class
device. I'm setting this back to confirmed because I believe you
misread the logs.

I can also confirm using image 99 that this is still happening on maguro
with a Jawbone ERA headset.

2013-10-10 Thread Nathan Haines
Public bug reported:

In build 92,

System About this phone and System Updates does not show the current
system image build number. This causes problems when reporting bugs.

Suggestion:
System About this phone should show
OS: Ubuntu 13.10
Build: (build number here)

System Updates should display the current build version as well as the
available software update, if any.

[Bug 915079] Re: Extended Partition misaligned by 1024 bytes

2012-01-25 Thread Nathan Haines
/dev/sda2 is your extended partition, which does not contain any data,
just a linked list of logical partitions. This allows for more than 4
partitions using the MBR (msdos) partition table format. Since the
partition is never accessed directly, it does not need to be aligned.
It is misaligned by 1KB to maximize the usable space on your drive.

/dev/sda1 is the partition containing your root file system and it is
positioned at 1MB, which is properly aligned with your Advanced Format
drive. /dev/sda5 is the partition containing your swap space and it is
also properly aligned.

Per Ubuntu bug guidelines, please do not confirm your own bugs--this
should be done by another individual who can reproduce the bug on
another system.

Thank you for reporting this bug. In this case, as we've discussed, it
looks like everything is working fine. Therefore, I am marking this bug
as invalid because it appears that your hard drive was partitioned
properly. Feel free to respond to this bug if new information arises.

2011-08-18 Thread Nathan Haines

name shows a list of applications with a holographic effect behind the
icon. Some icons such as the one for QuickSynergy are tiled, and the
holographic effect shows up for a second but then disappears.

2011-04-20 Thread Nathan Haines
@David fix committed means the appropriate development code has been
patched but the version that will incorporate this patch has not been
released yet. fix released means that the version has been locked off
and... released. It's in the build phase, but short of running 'apt-get
source apport' and patching it yourself then building your own Debian
package and installing that there's not really anything that can be done
to speed things up at this point.

[Bug 740495] [NEW] Maximized window loses focus when pulled down from Unity panel

2011-03-22 Thread Nathan Haines
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When a maximized window is pulled down from the Unity panel, the
restored window no longer has focus if there are no other windows on
screen.

To reproduce:

1. Close or minimize all running applications.
2. Open GNOME Terminal or Text Editor (to choose an example).
3. Maximize the window.
4. Enter keystrokes into the window.
5. Pull Unity panel down to restore window.

Note at this point the window controls are dimmed because the window no
longer has focus.

Using the restore/maximize window control retains window focus more
often but not 100%.

[Bug 740515] [NEW] Window controls in Unity panel do not extend to top of display

2011-03-22 Thread Nathan Haines
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

In the Unity panel, the active target area of the window controls for
maximized windows does not extend to the top 2 pixels on the screen.
This means that great care must be taken to actually click on the
controls.

According to Fitts's law, extending the active area to the top of the
screen would make the controls infinitely tall and greatly increase the
speed at which they can be activated and clicked by the mouse. This
would greatly improve usability of maximized windows in Unity.

When a menuless window is focused, the Unity panel fades out the
application name even though there are no menus to choose from. The
Unity panel shouldn't fade out the application name when the mouse moves
over it and the window contains no menus.

[Bug 736375] Re: Please drop the System Settings link from the session indicator menu

2011-03-16 Thread Nathan Haines
I agree. It's obtrusive and it was very jarring to have the last entry
no longer be power-related. If it were at least at the top of the menu
that would be one thing but it doesn't belong on the bottom and I don't
feel it belongs in this menu at all.

[Bug 191379] Re: [needs-packaging] PyRoom

2008-07-13 Thread Nathan Haines
There are also modifications needed to make PyRoom compatible with
Ubuntu, but MOTU will not allow a package with a modified version of
PyRoom. Evidentially, a patch system of some kind must be made in order
to modify the original files.

I am going to try and commit some necessary changes to PyRoom and
organize a 0.2.2 release that will help bring some things closer, but
they are also looking at restructuring PyRoom to use distutils as well.

I need to put my packaging directory under version control and publish
it to Launchpad.

[Bug 191379] Re: [needs-packaging] PyRoom

2008-07-13 Thread Nathan Haines
Adam,

I had added a line to adjust they Python path in pyroom.py, but it
appears that this is not actually necessary, and the other change was to
customize the locales directory, but I simply wasn't putting them in the
proper place--after which they will work without modification. So the
actual patches shouldn't be an issue anymore. I'll just commit the
.desktop file and the launcher icon to the actual release files and call
it 0.2.2.

The major change is to migrate to python-central or python-support, but
this requires PyRoom to use distutils. Tiax's work should benefit us
for 0.3, and in fact I was preparing to start working on it myself. But
I'm not sure how to use python-central or python-support and
documentation for standalone modules seems to be lacking.

What I think now is that all other objections to the 0.2 package can be
addressed, and I'm hoping we can get 0.2 accepted (similarly to how it
is in my PPA) into intrepid, while working hard to get 0.3 converted to
one of the Debian Python packaging frameworks.

[Bug 40376] Re: RTF document oo-about-ubuntu-ru.rtf loads up in gedit

Nope, it opens up in OOo on my week-or-two-old copy of Edgy. I'll run
Update Manager and upgrade to 6.10 Beta, and if it still opens in the
right app, I'll mark this bug as fixed.
