[Bug 1703479] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.04 & Kubuntu 17.04 LiveCD writes to bios/hardware clock; thereby messing up my installed Windows 10 Pro laptop time

2017-07-10 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

I created Live USB thumb drives of Ubuntu & Kubuntu 17.04 and when I
went to try them out, all was fine because the clock displayed in Ubuntu
& Kubuntu was correct. I had assumed that Ubuntu & Kubuntu OS would
assume that it was forbidden to alter the bios/hardware clock because
that would defeat the entire purpose of a Live environment.

I had assumed that the two Linux OS would perform a check to see if the
bios/hardware clock was set to UTC. If the bios/hardware clock was set
to UTC then great. Still the Live OS should not touch the bios clock
with out permission. The two Linux OS should via a dialog box ask the
user if the clock can be changed via ntpdate or ntp and a warning that
doing so will likely alter the time to an incorrect time in Windows.

If the bios/hardware clock is found to be non-UTC then the two Linux OS
should simply display that time and not use ntpdate or ntp. At this
point if the user wishes to correct the time in the two Linux OS, The
two Linux OS should warn the user that giving the two Linux OS
permission to change the time will mess up Windows.

In an Live environment the bios/hardware clock should never be written
to, instead only read from and the time simply be an accurate reflection
of the bios/hardware clock. Any writing to the bios/hardware clock
should first be prompted by a permission dialog box and it should
display a warning that altering the clock in Ubuntu & Kubuntu will most
likely mess up the time in Windows.

Upon shutdown of the Live session the Ubuntu & Kubuntu should offer to
restore the bios/hardware clock to what it was when first booting the
Live session.

Inaccurate time in Windows has no doubt it's fair share of problems.
Accurate time is important and accurate ticking is even more important.
The bios/hardware clock should never be written to without user
permission.

User permission on Linux is granted by installing ntpdate or ntp and
possibly the editing of config files. This can also be done during the
install process where you choose your timezone and tick the option to
update time via Internet.

User permission on Windows is done during install time as well as post
install fiddling with the time and date settings in Windows.

Both Linux and Windows fail in warning user about changing bios/hardware
clock.

Please do not write to the bios/hardware clock without user permission
and please display a warning that doing so may adversely affect other
operating systems.

I fully expect no surprises when I am done with the live session and I
boot back into Windows.

Maybe it's my fault, maybe I changed the clock in the Live session. But
and But I was never warned that changing the time display in Ubuntu &
Kubuntu was changing the bios/hardware clock and that my Windows OS was
all screwed up time wise.

This is my first Windows computer since I switched to Linux in 1996, so
maybe I am simply uneducated in how time works in Windows. I use UTC on
all my Linux machines. It's so much easier to use local time on
Windows.

I'm happy to help debug.

[Bug 1648934] Re: Dpkg fails to reinstall MTA Exim4 due to; "exim: failed to find uid for user name "Debian-exim"

2017-06-06 Thread Nathaniel Homier
I had already tried removing the /var/lib/exim4 dir and it was a no go.

I see exim4-config.0.crash in /var/crash. Would that be helpful to
upload. Would it contain passwords?

And that's only because it says virtbroken, I have no idea what that

[Bug 1648934] Re: Dpkg fails to reinstall MTA Exim4 due to; "exim: failed to find uid for user name "Debian-exim"

2017-06-01 Thread Nathaniel Homier
ChristianEhrhardt (paelzer) I looked at exim4-config.postinst.

Only thing I could see was;

if [ "$1" = "configure" ] &&\
! getent passwd Debian-exim > /dev/null ; then
echo 'Adding system-user for exim (v4)' 1>&2
adduser --system --group --quiet --home /var/spool/exim4 \
--no-create-home --disabled-login --force-badname Debian-exim

But I'm not really good at packaging files or commands.

It's really these 2 errors;
exim: failed to find uid for user name "Debian-exim"
and
Invalid new configfile /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp, not installing
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp to /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated

and we know it's post install because of;
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Which I would assume it means that Exim4 gets installed but configuring it is
screwed up.

Is there some command or way to see a detailed listing of whats going on
during post install, like a debug output switch?

[Bug 1648934] Re: Dpkg fails to reinstall MTA Exim4 due to dependency errors; E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2016-12-11 Thread Nathaniel Homier
I also tried;
compgen -u
Debian-exim
sudo deluser Debian-exim
sudo deluser --group Debian-exim

And;
sudo apt-get remove --purge exim4\*
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo dpkg --purge `COLUMNS=300 dpkg -l "*" | egrep "^rc" | cut -d\ -f3`
sudo rm -r /var/lib/exim4
sudo rm /var/crash/exim4-config.0.crash
sudo updatedb

Still get;
exim: failed to find uid for user name "Debian-exim"
Invalid new configfile /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp, not installing
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp to /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated
dpkg: error processing package exim4-config (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Please help me with this bug. I don't know what else to do. Postfix is
not an option.

[Bug 1648934] [NEW] Dpkg fails to reinstall MTA Exim4 due to dependency errors; E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2016-12-09 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

nate@frontier:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 16.10
Release:16.10
Codename: yakkety

I had installed Exim4 MTA. I had a problem in Exim4 unrelated to the
dpkg error. I reinstalled Exim4 MTA and became entangled in dependency
hell. This always happens with Exim4. Dpkg does something to get
confused. This is very much a bug. Postfix is not an option. I have
another vm running Exim4 at the moment, but would like to get Exim4
running on the Ubuntu machine.

I tried following this howto to solve it and that failed;
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2309546

Here is the output of trying to reinstall;

This bug still affects me and I know we would all like it fixed. I know

2014-11-05 Thread Nathaniel Homier
My bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
nouveau/+bug/1378881 was marked as a duplicate of this one.

The nouveau driver does not work, but the nvidia drivers work as long as
I don't use 3D stuff like steam games like half life 2. The moment I
fire up a 3D game it gets weird colors and a frozen screen. Keyboard
frozen also.

Now that 14.10 is out, maybe the programmers will have more time to fix
this bug.

[Bug 1378881] Re: nouveau video driver crashing X. Total freeze of computer 14.04.1

2014-10-16 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Switching to the 331.38 proprietary drivers from Nvidia seems to have
stopped the crashes. However this is not a long term solution as I
prefer free software and it pains me greatly to have to use non-free
software. I hope you can help me to use free software only.

Nvidia driver 331.38 works for me. No crashes

Nouveau driver does not work.

Hi AllenS. I want to try it. But unfortunately when I went to install

to wait for a new version to be uploaded or find a ppa. If I can get
the latest dropbear than I would like to try your trick.

Thanks AllenS.

[Bug 595648] Re: Remote unlocking not possible if plymouth is active (Bug or Feature?)

2014-10-15 Thread Nathaniel Homier
I'm a server admin, I manage a mail server and DNS server. The server
is encrypted for valid reasons. I need to have remote boot via SSH.
This bug needs to be made a higher priority! I have daily local access
to the sever, but what happens when I'm on vacation and I need to reboot
the encrypted server. Right now I have to trust a third party to boot
the server and of course they have to know the password, but what
happens when their out of town and I'm out of town, hmmm?

The workarounds in the comments are not the proper Ubuntu/Debian way and
risk breaking with every update that comes down the line. I simply
don't have the time to test every update to make sure the scripts posted
in the comments don't break.

Would giving money to the Ubuntu programmers solve this or does Ubuntu
not have a $$$ bounty program. I couldn't afford much, maybe $50.

[Bug 1380084] [NEW] SSH client requires SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 will not work without it, can't use key auth without SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0

2014-10-11 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

I expect that when using key based authentication I do $ssh user@0.0.0.0 I
expect to be asked for the key password. Instead I get Agent admitted failure
to sign using the key.
Permission denied (publickey).

Using SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 solves the problem allowing me to be asked for the
key password.

What should happen is that I should not have to specify SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0
on the CLI, I should only have to type $ user@0.0.0.0

[Bug 1380084] Re: SSH client requires SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 will not work without it, can't use key auth without SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0

2014-10-11 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Happens with all SSH commands such as scp and sftp. This also means
that I can't use the file explorer called files to connect to remote
file systems. sftp will not work in the files browser because there is
no way to tell files to use SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0

So I can not browse remote files in the file explorer as if they were
local. I'm talking about the GUI file explorer.

2014-10-08 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

14.04.1 crashes. I suspect the nouveau video driver. Can not use bug
report from within problem computer as it freezes very quickly after
login. Video display freezes first with visual corruption followed by
keyboard. Mouse works for about 10 to 20 seconds more then stops
working. Final stage the keyboard lights start flashing. Hard reset
required.

14.04.1 with all updates applied as of October 8th, 2014.

[Bug 1286578] [NEW] Non-admin users need admin access to connect to new wifi. A problem on mobile devices with standard non admin accounts. Present on 13.10 to 14.04

2014-03-01 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

When you install Ubuntu 13.10 or 14.04, the first account is the admin
account. The admin account can connect to new wifi connections just
fine without needing the admin password. When the admin account creates
a standard non-admin, that non-admin account when it tries to connect to
new wifi connections, pops up a dialog box asking for the admin
password. Non-admin accounts can not connect to new wifi connections
without the admin account. Does this present a security flaw as the
only solution is to make all accounts admin or having everyone know the
admin password. My sister is the admin account for the laptop and she
can connect just fine. I however is only just a non-admin account and
everywhere I go I am asked for the admin account everytime I want to
connect to wifi at Starbucks or any other place.

I should note that wired ethernet connections work just fine, however it
is annoying to find some business that has wired ports and some have
none at all :(

[Bug 1160464] [NEW] Bind db.root outdated, backport only the db.root file, for LTS important to keep db.root updated

2013-03-26 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

In Precise the Bind9 db.root file is outdated. We need to keep this
file updated especially as Precise gets older over time. As time passes
this file will become more and more out of date. It may be possible to

Please consider updating the db.root file only and leaving the rest of

As you can see the Broadcom BCM20702A0 chipset is reconized but the
firmware is missing. I have seen other bug reports that say the
firmware issues is fixed in the 3.2 kernel and I have the 3.5 kernel.

Retail product name is Targus Bluetooth 4.0 Dual -Mode Micro USB
Adapter.

See these bug reports which say the problem is fixed, but not for me.
Is this a regression in the kernel.

thank you for your bug report, is the issue limited to nautilus? could
be an unity/appmenu issue as well...

This only happens with nautilus.

[Bug 1135255] [NEW] nautilus global menubar menu disapears after running for about 6 days

2013-02-27 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

After starting and logging in to unity3D desktop everything is fine.
After running for about 6 days or so, clicking on the nautilus icon in
the unity menu bar on the left opens the file manager as expected.
However when going to the nautilus global menu on the top panel, the
menus are gone and are replaced with a dark brown stub. See attached
screenshot. The only way I know how to get the menus back is by logging
out and then back in again.

Eager to cooperate in solving this annoying bug.

[Bug 1116238] [NEW] In System Settings when I click on management service the password box goes a way before I can finish typing password as such I can't setup Launchpad

2013-02-05 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

I go to System Settings then click on the management services icon in
12.04.2. It offers to install the Landscape client and I let it. It
installs and then a password box prompt pops up and I begin typing my
password but the password box goes away before I'm done typing! I try
repeatedly to type my password but to no avail, I can't type fast
enough.

This is for my netbook. On my desktop I managed to type fast enough.
Both desktop and netbook have same problem, but on desktop I can type
fast enough. But I can't add my netbook to Landscape because I can't
type fast enough. I already love landscape very much I can't stand this
bug. It's got to go.

I would have used apport, but I had no clue as to package name.

[Bug 1045389] [NEW] Upgraded from 10.04.4 to 12.04.1 and no global menu. Willing to do whatever it takes to debug.

2012-09-03 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

Upgraded 10.04.4 to 12.04.1 desktop. I was expecting to see the global
menu. But the program menus were the same as usual. This happens with
all programs. I have searched high and low for a solution including
Ubuntu forums. I have searched launchpad for a solution and nothing
presented itself.

Please help. I was expecting better for an LTS and I use LTS because
things just seem to work better.

Thank you.

Thank you Omer Akram. Your solution fixed the problem. But why was
this program not installed during the upgrade? We can now mark this as
solved. But should I or someone else file a bug because indicator-
appmenu was not installed during the upgrade or is this expected
behaviour. Thanks again.

[Bug 671507] [NEW] Evolution lost Ubuntu One contacts, there still in the Couchdb database though

2010-11-05 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution lost my Ubuntu One contacts, meaning they don't show up and an
error box pops up. I checked the couchdb database and there still
there, there just not showing up in Evolution. I don't do anything
unusual with Evolution. This has happened before. It happens when I
start Evolution.

I have used this fix many times:
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/desktopcouch/Documentation/Troubleshooting
The above link usually does not work right away, I have to do it several times
in a row before it works.

[Bug 664082] [NEW] Motion complains about not being able to create pid file on computer start up. Runs just fine in daemon mode with manual start.

2010-10-20 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: motion

motion.pid is not created. I noticed there was no motion directory in
/var/run. I purged motion and reinstalled using Ubuntu Software Center,
which is how I originally installed. For purging I used Synaptic. Upon
reinstall, the motion directory was created in /var/run. Upon $ sudo
service motion start in motion directory in /var/run/motion there was
no motion.pid file seen. I have no idea why motion is not creating the
pid file. However I am eager to debug motion if you tell me how to do
it.

I originally noticed a problem in motion upon reboot of my computer.
Motion did not start and complained about not being able to create pid
file. And there was no motion directory in /var/run. Manually starting
motion using $ sudo service motion start the daemon runs just fine,
but no pid file is created.

/etc/default/motion daemon is set to yes.

[Bug 635937] [NEW] SRU request. Evolution on 10.04 LTS only supports SHA1 for the next 3 years. SHA2 would be nice.

2010-09-11 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In the title I mean SRU not SRA.

For the next 3 years Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will only be able to support the
SHA1 cipher. Thats 3 long years of using a broken and useless cipher.
What are the options for those who require an LTS, there are no options.
Upgrading to a non-LTS release defeats the purpose of using an LTS. I
am very aware that hell would freeze over before this SRU request would
be accepted. It's too bad that the SHA1 patch came too late for 10.04.
I don't how easy an attack against SHA1 would be, would it be acceptable
to wait 3 years if attacks against SHA1 are still hard enough as to not
worry about it?

If SHA1 attacks are trivial, then would Ubuntu please consider an SRU.

[Bug 635937] Re: SRA request. Evolution on 10.04 LTS only supports SHA1 for the next 3 years. SHA2 would be nice.

2010-09-11 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Ah crap, in the title I mean SRU not SRA.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evolution
+
+ In the title I mean SRU not SRA.

- am very aware that hell would freeze over before this SRA request would
+ am very aware that hell would freeze over before this SRU request would
be accepted.

[Bug 634652] Re: Gwibber 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 still will not authenticate to Twitter

2010-09-10 Thread Nathaniel Homier
I'm so embarrassed! I did not see that the Twitter authenticate page
had a save button. I clicked saved and now it works. Please mark this
bug as invalid please. Thank you.

[Bug 634652] [NEW] Gwibber 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 still will not authenticate to Twitter

2010-09-09 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Attempting to authenticate to Twitter with Gwibber 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 will
fail. Clicking on the existing Twitter account in Gwibber will show a
red bar that says Authorize. Clicking the red authorize bar takes you
to the Twitter application authorization page, where you fill in your
username and password. Clicking the authorize takes you back to the
regular Twitter account display. It now says authorized. But in fact
we are not authorized. This can be shown by clicking another account
and then back to the Twitter account where the red bar reappears. If I
attempt again, Twitter remembers the username and password and will once
again attempt to authorize but will fail.

Tried logging out and back again to the desktop, no go.
