[Bug 1810439] [NEW] DNS/systemd-resolve: host1.foo.local cannot resolve host2.bar.local

2019-01-03 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 (using the latest maas.io image).
The system is in a DNS domain of "maas.local".
There are other systems in this data center that are in the DNS domain
"eng.local".

Attempting to resolve the name of a system in the eng.local domain fails
when run from the maas.local system (and vice versa, but we'll focus on
the details of the former case).

[Bug 1810439] Re: DNS/systemd-resolve: host1.foo.local cannot resolve host2.bar.local

2019-01-03 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Why isn't systemd-resolved forwarding my query for mirror1.eng.local to
the configured upstream DNS server?

[Bug 1791354] [NEW] gnome-terminal scrollbars "hang outside" the window by 1 pixel

2018-09-07 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

(This might be a bug with the Ubuntu theme -- not sure.)

Gnome Terminal scrollbars appear to be 1 pixel too close to the edge of
the window. It may be that they are in the right place, but should
somehow be rendered "under" the black border of the window, or maybe
they need to be moved "inboard" by 1 pixel in both x and y dimension.
See attached screenshot.

I'm using the plain Gnome session on Ubuntu 18.04, up to date as of this
morning.

After cancelling the "apt upgrade" and pressing reload in the Gnome Software
Updates tab, it still indicates "Software is up to date".

I would expect the Gnome Software Updates UI to show that there are
updates available.

[Bug 1755887] [NEW] Duplicate Login keyring created on every login, results in multiple keyring unlock requests on each login

2018-03-14 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Steps:

1. Log in to gnome session.
2. Authentication required for login keyring dialog appears.
3. Enter correct password.
4. Go back to step 2 (repeats N times).
5. Do whatever (or nothing).
6. Log out.

Every time I log in (step 1), the value of N increases.
I also see in the "Passwords and Keys" application, that there are multiple
"Passwords" keyrings with the exact same name, "Login" (see screenshot). The
number of duplicate keyrings increases with each login.

[Bug 1754688] [NEW] Full screen windows always open on 1st monitor

2018-03-09 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Hardware setup consists of 3 displays:
- 2 "large" displays (left, middle)
- 1 "medium" display (right)

In the prior version of Remmina (in Ubuntu 17.10), a profile that is
configured to "Use client resolution" will use the resolution of the
display on which the main Remmina window sits (or maybe it's the display
where the cursor is pointing --- they're the same when you double click
on an entry to launch it). This allowed one to choose which display on
which to open a full screen RDP client and have correct results.

In the new version of Remmina, "Use client resolution" always appears to
use the resolution of the 1st (large) display, even if the action is
occurring over on the 3rd (medium sized) display. Additionally, when the
window is made full screen, it always jumps over to the 1st display.
Very frustrating.

[Bug 1754686] [NEW] libcurl4 Conflicts: libcurl3 - prevents install of 3rd party apps like slack-desktop

2018-03-09 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Updating the curl package pulls in libcurl4, which for some reason

[Bug 1754186] [NEW] Night Light only affects a single monitor now

2018-03-07 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

The Display settings have a "Night Light" option which allows reducing blue
light at night.
In Ubuntu 17.10, this worked great, and the setting took effect on all 3 of my
monitors.
In Bionic, only the 1st monitor is affected; the other 2 remain at the default
color temperature.

[Bug 1722550] [NEW] In Ubuntu 17.10 (artful), remmina cannot "grab all keyboard events" anymore

2017-10-10 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

When connected to a host via RDP, the toolbar has a button labeled "Grab
all keyboard events". This allows things like "Alt-Tab" to switch
windows on the remote host, rather than the local host, when Remmina has
the focus.

In Ubuntu 17.10, this has stopped working. Things like Alt-Tab now
always affect the local host, regardless of the state of this toolbar
button.

[Bug 1004371] Re: "smart" window placement puts windows on top of each other while there is plenty of space

2015-10-06 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
@Fabio, if this feature didn't exist and we were asking for it, that
would be a feature request. The feature exists, but does not work. That
is a bug.

@Eleni, I think you must be confusing this with a different bug report.

[Bug 1485024] [NEW] context menu appears on wrong monitor when window is on rightmost of 3 monitors

2015-08-14 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

This is a triple-head setup with 3 monitors arranged horizontally.

When the chromium window is on either the left or middle monitor, right-
clicking on a tab or normal web page displays a context menu at the
mouse pointer (i.e. normal context menu behavior).

When the chromium window is on the right monitor, right clicking on a
tab or page displays a context menu on the right edge of the middle
monitor (but at the expected vertical location). This is the bug.

Interestingly, if the mouse pointer is close enough to the right edge of
the right monitor when right clicking, the context menu appears in the
expected place (on the right monitor near the mouse pointer, but pushed
in so the whole menu fits on the screen without overflowing off the
right edge).

[Bug 1480440] [NEW] libvirt does not wait for guests to shut down

2015-07-31 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

In previous releases, such as 14.04, a host shutdown would initiate a
clean shutdown of all libvirt guests, and wait (up to some configurable
amount) for them to cleanly shut down before proceeding with the host
shutdown.

In wily, this no longer happens, and a clean host shutdown results in a
dirty shutdown of all guest VMs.

** Affects: kvm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1467695] [NEW] Alt-Grave (`) switcher has flickering/pulsing shadow artifacts

2015-06-22 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

1. Hold down Alt and keep it held down.
2. Press and release the key above Tab (Grave, or `). Keep alt held down.

While Alt is held down, the drop shadows for the window or windows of
the current application will keep building up and then going back to
normal and building up again. It's almost as though the windows are
being redrawn may times per second into a buffer without clearing it
first each time (but clearing it every second or so).

While this is happening, I notice that the drop shadow for the top bar
does the same thing. This can also be observed if one uses Alt-Tab to
select an app that has multiple windows that then expand out into a
similar display.

I've observed this on systems with Intel, NVIDIA, and ATI display hardware, so
I don't think it's hardware-specific.
All my Ubuntu systems have 2 or 3 monitors. I suspect multiple monitors are
needed to reproduce this.

[Bug 1267059] Re: Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies does not work

2015-03-24 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
This bug is serious (it causes filesystems to fill up on pretty much every
production server that doesn't have a huge root fs).
It has a reasonable looking patch that fixes the problem.
I don't think there is anything to discuss other than: How do we get the fix
into Ubuntu?

2014-10-13 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
This bug is pretty embarrassing for anyone trying to show parents or
friends how easy Ubuntu is to use.

Note: A workaround for the cannot burn any .iso files aspect of this
issue (which doesn't require installing extra software) is to use wodim
at the command line:

wodim foo.iso

[Bug 1281806] Re: Alt-Tab switcher regularly goes into flicker loop of death or just hangs

2014-02-24 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
I just observed this flicker loop of death while closing a Thunderbird
message window. I chose Send, and after the dialog with the progress bar
got to 100%, both the dialog and the message window started flickering
madly and the whole session became unusable.

I suspect this is related to the Alt-Tab switcher, as the symptoms are
visually similar, and in both cases it appears to occur when a window
*should* be disappearing.

[Bug 1089757] Re: Every thunderbird update requires locking a new entry to the launcher and removing the old one

2014-02-22 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
This is still happening regularly a year later. Is this really difficult
to resolve, or do none of the Unity developers dogfood Ubuntu anymore?

[Bug 1281806] [NEW] Alt-Tab switcher regularly goes into flicker loop of death or just hangs

2014-02-18 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Recently when doing Alt-Tab (and Alt-`) to switch between windows, the
rectangle display showing the icons for all the applications and windows
will suddenly start flickering rapidly and the whole X sessions will
become unresponsive to keypresses and mouse actions. Sometimes instead
of flickering, the Alt-Tab display will simply fail to appear and the
same unresponsive X session results.

This seems to happen very frequently during the course of a day. When it
happens, my only recourse is to press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a text console,
log in, and run killall compiz and then DISPLAY=:0 metacity to kill
the hung window manager and start a new one. (I tried running
DISPLAY=:0 compiz from VT2, but that doesn't seem to start compiz in a
fully functional manner.)

I'm reporting this from a system with an NVidia card, but I experience
the same thing on another system using an ATI Radeon HD 7970/R9 280X
card, so I don't think it's video-driver specific.

Needless to say, this makes Unity pretty hard to use effectively.

[Bug 1281202] [NEW] weekly fstrim cron job reports errors

2014-02-17 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Every week I get an email from cron with error output from the
/etc/cron.weekly/fstrim job:

/etc/cron.weekly/fstrim:
 HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify) failed: Invalid argument
device /dev/md0 is not an Intel or Samsung drive
SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 70 00 02 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 3a 00

SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 70 00 02 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 3a 00

device /dev/sdf1 is not an Intel or Samsung drive

It's true that those block devices are not Intel nor Samsung SSDs
(though /dev/sdc is an Intel SSD), but I don't think fstrim-all should
be printing a warning in this case.

[Bug 1281260] [NEW] Appearance settings missing after latest dist-upgrade

2014-02-17 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

After doing a dist-upgrade today and rebooting, most appearance-related
settings are not applied. (Wrong, aliased fonts; wrong theme, missing
keybindings...). If I run gnome-settings-daemon from a Terminal, it
starts without error and my settings are corrected. Did some recent
change remove gnome-settings-daemon from the Ubuntu session definition
or something?

Sorry, not sure which package this report really belongs to...

[Bug 1280053] [NEW] eclipse is a crashy mess on trusty

2014-02-13 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

It seems apport has stopped catching eclipse crashes, so I'm reporting
this issue by hand. To reproduce, all I have to do is open a medium
sized Java project in eclipse and try to navigate around (using F3 and
F4 etc.). After 3 or 4 operations, eclipse always crashes. This started
right after upgrading to trusty.

What can I do to help folks debug this further?

[Bug 768931] Re: no custom icon on launcher displayed for mono winforms and ogre apps

2012-12-08 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
If keepass2 Upstream implemented a workaround 2 months ago, why is the
bug is still marked invalid for keepass2? Can the keepass2 maintainer
comment?

Also, it sounds like maybe the real defect is in Mono itself. Does
anyone know which mono package would be appropriate to mark as affected?

[Bug 320057] Re: Thunderbird hangs for 10secs when auto-completing address

2012-09-26 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
I'm seeing this today in the latest Thunderbird in 12.04 (seems to have
started happening to me more often in the past few months, but perhaps
that's due to some server-side change.)

It seems worth pointing out that when Thunderbird freezes with the
address field drop-down displayed, the entire X session becomes unusable
(due to the drop down menu having some kind of global focus?) until
Thunderbird thaws. So one cannot even go do something in another app
while waiting for Thunderbird when this happens. Everything grinds to a
halt.

(Also note that per the upstream bug, the workaround referred to in
comment #24 apparently just has the effect of turning off LDAP lookups,
so it is not in fact a workaround at all.)

[Bug 763422] Re: [i965] idle black screen plus other issues Ubuntu 11.04

2012-09-20 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
I too am seeing the issue where the screen stays black but the mouse cursor
moves and changes shape normally.
Eventually, after some long amount of time (which varies from seconds to
minutes), the screen will suddenly restore as expected. I when it eventually
restores it's usually coincident with a keystroke or mouse movement, but I
don't have solid data.
I am using a Radeon HD 7970 with 3 monitors, and Unity on Precise.

If I switch to VT2 , wait a little, and switch back, the problem persists.
If I switch to VT2, log in, and kill the compiz process, and switch back, the
screen restores as normal (except of course windows don't have decorations for
a few seconds while compiz respawns, as expected).

[Bug 1037213] [NEW] Alt-` does not always switch window

2012-08-15 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Steps:
1. Open 2 windows of the same application (e.g. gnome-terminal). Call them
Window A and B. Window B has the focus to start.
2. Push down the Alt key
3. Press and immediately release the ` key (the key below Esc)
4. Release the Alt key

Expected behavior:
- Window A gains the focus.

Actual behavior:
- If the delay between steps 3 and 4 is small, window A gains the focus.
- If the delay between steps 3 and 4 is *slightly* longer, window B keeps the
focus.

I like many things about Unity, but this is *maddening*.

[Bug 689692] Re: the softwares launched from the unity-panel often don't get focus as they should

2012-06-08 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Not sure why this was closed --- the behavior still exists. Often, after
launching an application from the Unity launcher, the new window fails
to take the focus. I'm guessing this is related to the window manager's
focus stealing prevention feature (which is at its default setting), but
presumably the launcher should be able to coordinate with the window
manager so that newly launched windows do get the focus. It seems this
doesn't currently work reliably.

[Bug 689692] Re: the softwares launched from the unity-panel often don't get focus as they should

2012-06-08 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Certain combinations of (currently focused, new) windows seem more
likely than others to exhibit this bug. For example, if the currently
focused window is a Gnome Terminal and the newly opened window is a
Nautilus (home folder) window, the Nautilus window always fails to get
the focus.

[Bug 689692] Re: the softwares launched from the unity-panel often don't get focus as they should

2012-06-08 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Apologies for following the wrong process. It is true that the part
about the launcher not claiming attention does seem to be fixed ---
the icon does wiggle briefly even if the window fails to take the
focus.

For my benefit, and that of future bug reporters who may come across
this report, what is the correct bug number that is currently tracking
the other part of this issue (windows not taking the focus when launched
from the unity launcher)?

[Bug 289952] Re: update-manager rewrites sources.list to only use official mirrors

2012-06-05 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
In comment #13 I said that creating /etc/update-manager/release-
upgrades.d/DistUpgrade.cfg allowed me to work around the problem. It
looks like this approach has at least one major problem:

On a system that has a variety of PPAs configured, if I do the
aforementioned AllowThirdParty = true hack, these PPA sources all get
rewritten to use precise instead of lucid. If any PPA no longer exists
in Precise, the upgrade fails.

The old behavior was smart enough to rewrite just the sources for the
local mirror, and disable the rest.

[Bug 1001051] [NEW] unity-2d launcher: right-click-drag-release doesn't work right

2012-05-17 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Scenario A:
1. Point at a launcher entry in the Unity (2D) dock.
2. Press the right mouse button and hold. (A menu appears.)
3. Drag mouse to the right to point at the first menu item.
4. Release button.

Expected Behavior:
During step 3, the first menu item is shown selected.
During step 4, the first menu item is chosen.

Actual behavior:
During step 3, the menu disappears!

Scenario B:
1. Point at a launcher entry in the Unity (2D) dock.
2. Press the right mouse button and hold. (A menu appears.)
3. Drag mouse down and to the right to point at the second menu item.
4. Release button.

Expected Behavior:
During step 3, the second menu item is shown selected.
During step 4, the second menu item is chosen.

Actual behavior:
During step 3, all the launchers in the doc scroll vertically, as though they
are being dragged. The menu also usually disappears (unless the first few
pixels of mouse movement were to the right, in which case the menu remains
while the launchers move vertically, but no menu items are selected.)

(When running Unity (3D), the actual behavior for both scenarios matches the
expected behavior.)

[Bug 998931] [NEW] menus appear on wrong monitor

2012-05-13 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Background:

I have 3 monitors (in a left/middle/right configuration) and an NVIDIA
Quadro NVS 450. This means I have to use Xinerama, which means Unity
falls back to Unity 2D. Most programs work fine.

Problem:

LibreOffice apps (like Calc and Writer) appear to have several bugs in
their menu implementation:

1. The menus are per-window, instead of being at the top of the screen
in the panel like other apps. This is fine with me, and *not* the topic
of this bug report. Presumably if global menus become a configurable
option, the mode in which libreoffice menus are currently operating will
be expected to work correctly. I mention it only for completeness.

2. When a window is on the middle or right monitor, the menus open in
the wrong position. For windows on the middle monitor, the menus open on
the right monitor. For menus on the right monitor, the menus open on the
correct monitor but align to the right of the menu item text. See the
attached screenshots for clarification.

LibreOffice apps are the only ones I've seen that exhibit this behavior.

Note that this bug is similar to bug 974900, but is not the same. In
that case, the menus are incorrectly right aligned (like in my right
monitor case), but they span monitors. In my case, the menu will shift
right a bit to avoid spilling onto the middle monitor.

Let me know if there is additional detail I can provide.

[Bug 998931] Re: menus appear on wrong monitor

This is not calc-specific (it happens with writer etc. too), but
libreoffice is just a metapackage and I don't have it installed, so
apport-collect 998931 complains.

[Bug 998936] [NEW] apport-collect fails with Package libreoffice not installed ... even

2012-05-13 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

Scenario:

I wanted to add some addition info to bug 998931 in case it was helpful to the
libreoffice maintainers.
The bug is reported against the libreoffice package (and does not appear to be
specific to any particular libreoffice application).
I tried running apport-collect 998931.
This failed with Package libreoffice not installed and no hook available,
ignoring.
I have many libreoffice-related packages installed, including libreoffice-calc,
libreoffice-writer, etc., but not the libreoffice metapackage.
Nonetheless, I tried changing the bug report to be against libreoffice-calc.
This failed with 'libreoffice-calc' is a binary package. This bug has been
assigned to its source package 'libreoffice' instead.

So it seems apport-collect and launchpad have differing and
incompatible ideas about how bugs relate to source/binary packages.

It seems the simplest solution would be for apport-collect bug-
number to allow reporting an issue if any of the binary packages for
which the bug's source package are installed (perhaps asking the user
which one to use if there is a one-binary-package assumption somewhere).

Argh, apparently apport-collect and LP have incompatible notions of
whether bugs relate to source or binary packages (bug 998936).

Anyway, I was wrong. Reading through the comments in bug 974900, I see
that bug is tracking my problem too.

[Bug 992657] [NEW] package memtest86+ 4.20-1.1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script was killed by signal (Terminated)

2012-05-01 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Public bug reported:

I did a release upgrade via do-release-upgrade from oneiric to precise.
The upgrade process hung indefinitely (for hours) after running the
memtest86+.postinst configure step (the memtest86+.post child process had
exited but not been reaped).
I eventually killed the parent Perl debconf frontend process so it could
continue.

This is what was in the upgrade console output right before and after
the hang:

[Bug 977080] Re: Coloured pixels around panel text when using Radiance theme + Wrong colours in panel when dash opened

2012-05-01 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
I first thought this was a pure duplicate of bug 979756, but I realize
the Badly visible text and icons when dash is open part of this report
is likely a separate issue.

I'm going to tweak the bug title slightly to make this more clear. If
you are affected by both of the issues reported in this bug, you may
want to also mark 979756 as affecting you.

[Bug 969535] Re: [power]: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in engine_get_icon_priv()

2012-04-25 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
I thought I had mentioned it in this bug, but I guess I hadn't --- I
also have a triple-head Xinerama config (on an Nvidia Quadro NVS 450).

Also, since it may not be clear to those who are not experiencing this
bug, when gnome-settings-daemon crashes at startup, it means that most
apps (Thunderbird, Firefox, Chrome, etc.) are totally unthemed, and many
desktop-wide settings (such as font size adjustments, etc.) are not
applied at all. In other words, the desktop looks like crap and is hard
to use.

If this isn't fixed for the Precise release, it might be a good idea to
have a prominent item in the release notes discouraging folks with
nontrivial multi-head setups from upgrading...

To reproduce: System Settings... Displays. I get dialog indicating

My setup is an Nvidia Quadro NVS 450 with 3 monitors (and thus
Xinerama), so the RANDR extension is not expected to be present. I
don't, however, expect the configuration app to crash.
