[Bug 1906476] Re: PANIC at zfs_znode.c:335:zfs_znode_sa_init() // VERIFY(0 == sa_handle_get_from_db(zfsvfs->z_os, db, zp, SA_HDL_SHARED, >z_sa_hdl)) failed

2021-10-10 Thread Nick Moffitt
I ran into this over the past few days, and the zfs-dkms install via
recovery also worked for me, though be warned that you will need to take
careful steps with secureboot to enrol the MOK that this generates for
you.

[Bug 1865497] [NEW] focal MAAS unit does not make DHCP requests on final boot

2020-03-02 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

While trying to boot a system into focal via MAAS, the image boots fine
and DHCPs and we get a window when cloud-init is being installed and
dist-upgrades go on that we can ssh in and look at logs (hence the
attached).

However, this process leaves the system in a state where the PXE BIOS
happily sends a DHCPREQUEST on the final boot, but the kernel/userland
never do. This appears to be a cloud-init bug as the system is fine
before that gets downloaded and run/installed.

[Bug 1865182] [NEW] lookup_builtin_file() could not open builtin file '/lib/modules/5.4.0-14-generic/modules.builtin.bin'

2020-02-28 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

This error did not take place on my laptop (where I ran apport, for
convenience), but on a server being deployed to Focal with MAAS.

The initial deployment boot worked fine, and that was lucky as it meant
I could ssh in and tail /var/log/syslog while it went through the
upgrades and cloud-init steps. But after this it reboots without
network configuration.

I've attached the logs mentioned above.

[Bug 1788819] [NEW] memusage man page provided but not the program

2018-08-24 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

apropos memory usage recommends memusage(1) and memusagestat(1) but
command-not-found cannot find these tools, recommending instead
gmemusage (which seems to require X and is unrelated).

I've heard that in Fedora the memusage script is in a libc-utils
package, but I seem to have all the libc-bin type packages installed. Do
we include the manual page in error?

[Bug 1745768] Re: system hangs within 10 minutes of logging in and starting browsers

2018-01-31 Thread Nick Moffitt
I managed to identify the problem as hardware, as it coincides with
physical stresses on the laptop. When I plugged in external peripherals
and left the laptop itself alone, the problem did not reoccur.

You can close this bug.

[Bug 1745768] [NEW] system hangs within 10 minutes of logging in and starting browsers

2018-01-27 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

I cannot run for very long under normal operational load using linux-
image-4.13.0-32-generic without a complete system freeze (mouse no
longer moves, keyboard no longer responsive). I have worked around this
by booting back into linux-image-4.13.0-31-generic which is working fine
on my hardware even with loads of browsers up and playing video and
everything.

[Bug 1722005] [NEW] Image-heavy PDF no longer displays

2017-10-07 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

The PDF from https://archive.org/details/kamikiukulelemet00newy
displayed fine under zesty, but under artful it shows up as lots of
blank white pages. This is the same under other PDF viewers, so I
suspect the real bug is in one of the shared libraries used by all of
them.

You could probably add a `set -x` to the top of the maintainer script on
disk and try again.

[Bug 1627472] [NEW] workspace switching broken after recent updates

2016-09-25 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

after the most recent updates, I find the only way I can switch workspaces is
by clicking on the Workspace Switcher in my dock. The keyboard shortcuts for
window management (maximising, moving workspaces, etc) don't work despite
showing up in keyboard shortcuts. Even clicking on a dock icon for a window in
another workspace no longer moves me.
I can still use other keyboard shortcuts such as opening terminals, and alt+tab
still works within a workspace.

[Bug 1611287] Re: provide canonical way to install templates and configuration files into $SNAP_* dirs

2016-08-10 Thread Nick Moffitt
Whether it's hackish or not, it is a step we're taking to work around an
obstacle snappy throws up but provides no mechanisms to deal with.

I think we're all taking roughly the same approaches, and that's
encouraging that people are unlikely to get this wrong if we can't fix
it. But it does make for a rather un-DRY experience that is a bit
jarring.

I would support adding some sort of mechanism to make these sorts of
operations first-class and consistent.

[Bug 1610925] [NEW] juju presents no commands to reboot a unit

2016-08-08 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

While dealing with a production system in EC2, I found myself with an
unresponsive unit. I did not have any ec2 tools to hand (having
deployed and managed everything via juju) so it was some work to bounce
this system and get it responding again.

Presumably every cloud substrate juju runs on has the notions of a soft
reboot as well as a hard stop and start for an instance. Could it please
be exposed via the juju CLI?

[Bug 1606833] [NEW] Need to build from subdir of source without removing rest of repo

2016-07-27 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

While attempting to build a library as a part, I need to follow these
instructions:

cd build/autotools
autoreconf -i
./configure CFLAGS='-O2'
make

The autotools plugin does almost exactly the right thing here, except
that it doesn't cd into build/autotools first. I tried using the
source-subdir option to make it build in that subdir, but unfortunately
that's not meant to be the top of the source tree (for example, src/ is
right next to build/ in this repo). Unfortunately source-subdir meant
that all I had was my automake/m4 stuff without any C sources!

It would be extremely helpful if any of these build plugins had an
option for a directory to cd into before either each step or the chain
of steps as a whole.

[Bug 1576546] [NEW] random letters don't display after resume from sleep

2016-04-29 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

When I resume from a long suspend in Xenial, I find that most of the
letters do not display. I can copy and paste them into chat windows and
people see them on the other side, but they do not show up visibly. The
menu items for suspend/shut down/log out usually vanish as well, which
makes it hard to find a good solution.

I find that killing my session manager restarts X and everything goes
back to normal on next login.

[Bug 1505564] Re: Soft lockup with "block nbdX: Attempted send on closed socket" spam

2016-01-06 Thread Nick Moffitt
This problem has caused more serious damage recently. When nbd dies and
printk()s like mad, the serial console is not fast enough to display it.

The kernel keeps allocating buffer space for serial output, which we see
as 13G kmalloc-256 or kmalloc-512 kernel threads.

Eventually the OOMkiller tries to free up space, but it can only kill
userspace programs so ultimately the system dies altogether.

This is more dire than mere CPU load or lockup warning messages.

This memory leak we have so far only seen on arm64, to be clear.

[Bug 1506543] [NEW] openstack instances on arm64 lock up on polling and other situations fairly repeatably

2015-10-15 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

While working on deploying arm64 builders in openstack, we found that it
was pretty easy to wedge them. Many hang just running ntpdate right off
the bat.

William Grant had more direct tests he did, but upgrading from 3.13 to
3.19 didn't seem to fix things.

[Bug 1504496] Re: package lxc 1.1.4-0ubuntu0.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

I was hitting problems with lxc on just normal package upgrades in vivid
earlier, but I was able to dpkg --configure -a this problem away and
finish out the release upgrade by hand (apt-get dist-upgrade (noop),
apt-get autoremove, reboot)

[Bug 1498387] [NEW] system hangs and CPU heats up in -29 but not -28

2015-09-22 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

I filed this bug against linux-image-3.19.0-29-generic and hope that it
has attached everything relevant.

With linux-image-3.19.0-29-generic I can only run my thinkpad X240 for a
few hours before I invariably trip over this bug and cause it to hang,
heating up and driving the fan to full speed. I never have this trouble
when I select linux-image-3.19.0-28-generic. Occasionally I'll reboot
for updates (such as the recent network manager one) and forget to go
down a build number, and I hit this again shortly after reboot.

The screen remains in whatever state it was in, but I am unable to move
the mouse or affect X with the keyboard (including trying to switch to a
virtual console with Ctrl-Alt-F1). Nothing suspicious shows up in
kern.log after the reboot, but I tend to have to do a hard power-off to
get back to a useful machine so the journal may not be fully
checkpointed in time.

That's fine. Is there a role-based routing configuration we could
provide to make the user experience for USB audio better?

[Bug 1495851] [NEW] Can't seem to make USB microphone the preferred input

2015-09-15 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

My laptop has a built-in audio port that accepts a three-channel ⅛” plug
for a stereo+microphone headset. Unfortunately due to the nature of the
beast, there is rather a lot of cross-talk, and the electronics in the
laptop are not the best. Also the DSP inside the laptop is surrounded
by sources of magnetic interference such as the fans, power supply, WiFi
antenna, etc.

When I plug in my nice USB microphone, I always have to go into the
sound settings tool and hunt over to the input tab and select it from
the listing in order to get audio through it. It's lucky that I know
how to do this, as some folks would simply plug it in, test it, and
decide that it doesn't work!

While I would argue that USB audio devices should be preferred over
built-in laptop chips, I am most frustrated by the lack of ability for
me to even say "From now on prefer this specific audio device for input,
whenever it is present".

I want to make my USB microphone Just Work without all the clicking
about!

[Bug 1495865] [NEW] module-switch-on-connect should be on by default

2015-09-15 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

bug #472697 claims that a particular device switched automatically even
without module-switch-on-connect loaded. I have a Blue Snowball
microphone, and it does not auto-switch unless I have module-switch-on-
connect added.

I believe my default.pa was attached to this bug by apport, but I've
used the back button a couple of times so it's possible that side-
channel got dropped. All I've done is add `load-module module-switch-
on-connect` to the thing.

[Bug 1495851] Re: Can't seem to make USB microphone the preferred input

2015-09-15 Thread Nick Moffitt
The command-line way to do this seems to be:

$ pacmd load-module module-switch-on-connect

Which works fine. I am willing to be convinced that this is a bad default for
some reason (and I'm going to file that as a separate bug) but at least the
control centre should give me a checkbox to flip this on!

[Bug 1389573] [NEW] Update-notifier window invisible in utopic

2014-11-05 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

Somehow I ended up with update-notifier not being visible on my utopic
laptop. I can see it in the dock on the left, and I can interact with
it that way (right-clicking to choose install available software), and
I can even close it out from there. But I cannot cause its main window
to appear on any desktop.

Rebooting does not clear this problem, and it happens even with the
reboot notifications.

A second restart did clear it, so it may be a race in some kind of

[Bug 1385665] [NEW] utopic upgrade lost the 'ubuntu' EFI variable

2014-10-25 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

My upgrade from trusty to utopic on my thinkpad X240 with a LUKS-
encrypted / went smoothly enough. The only oddity was a period when I
had to click into the terminal details and hit enter for it to complete.
I'm not entirely sure what was waiting for input or if it is relevant,
but when I rebooted I found myself without the 'ubuntu' entry in the EFI
variables.

I didn't realise this at first, and the Canonical Technical Support
folks advised me to use this tool: https://help.ubuntu.com/community
/Boot-Repair which made the problem worse (It did not fix the EFI
problem, and removed dm-crypt.ko from my initrd). I had to run
efibootmgr to put it back, and start from an old kernel that had an
unmolested initrd.

I've restored boot functionality on my laptop now, but I'm curious what
caused it to happen in the first place.

[Bug 1385077] [NEW] module defaults to unsafe load function

2014-10-24 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

The python-yaml module's load function is remarkably unsafe, allowing
yaml code to instantiate arbitrary python objects of arbitrary class or
type. Hidden away in the documentation is a safe_load() function, which
is the one nearly everyone wants to use to process yaml being sent over
the wire by heterogeneous systems or APIs.

Please make yaml.load call yaml.safe_load(), and give the other function
a name such as unsafe_load()

[Bug 1357295] [NEW] bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-08-15 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

We regularly use bcache to use SSDs as an extra block cache layer for
performance on large working sets (archive mirrors, large databases,
etc). Until now we have had good success with bcache on precise LTS
with HWE kernels up to Saucy's.

Unfortunately when we mount a bcache-backed volume on a Trusty server,
it immediately loses contact with bcache_writebac:

  PID USER PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

  501 root 20 0 0 0 0 D 0.0 0.0 0:00.00
bcache_writebac

kern.log shows it losing its mind pretty much immediately on startup:

[Bug 1355026] [NEW] small /boot (as created for full-disk encryption) confuses update-manager

2014-08-11 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

Every time a kernel update comes in, the update-manager scolds me for
not having enough disk free on /boot. I try to autoremove everything I
can, but in the end `sudo apt-get dist-upgrade` does the upgrade with no
problems.

Separately from why the installer gave me such a teensy /boot (doesn't
seem future-proof given the trends for kernel sizes), why can't update-
manager work out the upgrade?

[Bug 1352923] [NEW] MAAS 1.5 requires arbitrary high-numbered port connections between cluster and region controllers

2014-08-05 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

MAAS's separation of regions and clusters allows network admins to
centralise policy and interface while erecting management presence in
isolated networks. This feature is most useful in situations where the
firewall policy walls off clusters more strictly.

MAAS 1.5 seems to require that the cluster controllers call back to the
region controller via arbitrary high-numbered ports. I checked our
installation and could not find any specification of whcih ports in the
code or our local configuration, and only spotted them because our
firewall denied this traffic and caused node commissioning to fail.

I'm not familiar enough with twisted or the MAAS source enough to work
out why this is, but I suspected there were no defined ports when I
found the comment here:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~maas-
maintainers/maas/1.5/view/head:/src/maasserver/rpc/regionservice.py#L177

Start listening on an ephemeral port.

Unfortunately the exact situation that makes splitting out your cluster
controllers attractive is going to make this behaviour a deal-breaker.
Getting all unprivileged ports opened on a firewall is not something to
be done lightly.

I do not believe that MAAS 1.4 exhibited this behaviour.

[Bug 1352993] [NEW] pserv.yaml shouldn't need manual configuration to point at your region controller

2014-08-05 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

When a MAAS cluster controller is configured to talk to a central region
controller, it should be trivial to do in one place and have everything
else fall out from that. RIght now the generator setting is a URL
that includes the string localhost.

I just had to run around and change that to the hostname of our region
controller, but other pieces of the cluster controller clearly already
knew to talk to this host. This is a poor default, and should probably
be negotiated via the celery service if nothing is specified in /etc/.

[Bug 1341618] [NEW] grub 1.99-21ubuntu3.15 will not boot on some hardware

2014-07-14 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

A production system of ours recently experienced the problem detailed in
http://serverfault.com/questions/611423/did-grub-updating-bring-my-
server-down but with grub-pc instead of EFI.

Basically after upgrading to 1.99-21ubuntu3.15 one of our 12.04 machines
rebooted, and didn't survive the trip. We struggled for a long time
with a rescue USB key, and ultimately had to mount the filesystems in a
chroot and downgrade to 1.99-21ubuntu3.14 (which solved everything).

We've put the grub packages on hold on this system, but we're nervous
about the ability for our 12.04 servers to survive a reboot just now.
This has caused an extended service outage for an office full of people.

[Bug 1334168] [NEW] vim defaults for tm and ttm are wrong

2014-06-25 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

While scouring the net for info on curious lag in vim that can eat keystrokes
(devastating over a laggy link, which is one of the primary situations where
vim is useful), every conversation pointed me to `:help ttm`, which says:

A useful setting would be
:set timeout timeoutlen=3000 ttimeoutlen=100
(time out on mapping after three seconds, time out on key codes after a
tenth of a second).

So it appears that insead of putting the correct defaults in as the defaults,
vim chose to bury the information deep inside the documentation.

As a distro packaging vim, we have an opportunity to fix this.

[Bug 1224575] Re: gnome-control-center keyboard no longer has way to modify caps lock key behavior

It seems that the interface for selecting this has vanished, but not the
underlying mechanism to provide it.

(By the by, this bug is featured in

[Bug 1327202] [NEW] python-suds 0.4.1 is a beta version, and should not have been packaged

2014-06-06 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

While trying to make use of code that relied on suds 0.4, I hit a bug
that was reproducible in 0.4.1 but not in 0.4. It appears that pip
only carries 0.4, and upstream list 0.4.1 as beta.

It would appear that this is another upstream who uses the classic 1990s
Linux kernel version numbering pattern, where odd numbers are for
development and even numbers are for releases. We should forward this
ticket up to debbugs to warn the maintainers that the package should
stick to the even releases, or package only the versions that also
appear in the pip archives.

[Bug 742339] Re: Sync suds 0.4.1-2 (universe) from Debian experimental (main)

2014-06-06 Thread Nick Moffitt
I just filed bug 1327202 upon discovering that 0.4.1 is a beta release,
and I have encountered bugs as a result of using the packaged version
that do not appear in 0.4 proper. We should probably check to make sure
that we haven't seen any nova bugs that can be traced back to the pre-
release version of suds.

[Bug 1326162] [NEW] chromium scales huge when run from an lxc container

2014-06-03 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

I followed stgraber's excellent tutorials in
https://www.stgraber.org/2014/02/09/lxc-1-0-gui-in-containers/ and got a
container that has X11 and DRI and pulse access. It works really well!

But the odd thing is that chromium run from inside the container turns
out enormous on my 1920x1080 display in a way that chromia run outside
the container do not. I checked xrandr and xdpyinfo from both sides and
nothing changed.

I asked stgraber about this, and he doesn't see it with the proprietary
chrome builds.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2225788s=dd2819f676875c608dbac135d66ce9c9p=13032314
shows someone seeing it within KDE. So it seems as though Unity/gnome
set some sort of aura DPI environment up that I'm not getting yet in my
LXC container.

I'd be happy with a workaround at the moment, but really I just hope I
don't need to install dbus inside my lxc :)

[Bug 1324710] [NEW] The Ubuntu Backups tool isn't helpful for restoring your home directory

2014-05-29 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

Following an unrelated crisis on my new laptop (okay I'll admit it: I
forgot my drive encryption passphrase), I took steps while it was still
fully functional to make a backup of ~ for later restore. Fortunately
the tools guided me into a backup of /home ignoring the Trash and my
Downloads directory. I wrote it to an SD card that had plenty of space,
verified the install, did a test restore to a temporary directory, and
then was satisfied enough to flatten the machine.

After my first boot, I launched the backups tool and ran a full restore
from this backup, putting the files in their normal locations.

At this point, Unity INSANED. I ended up with a desktop that consisted
of nautilus, the default wallpaper, and not much else. I ended up going
into a vc with Ctrl+Alt+F1, but couldn't find any obvious culprits. No
amount of logging out and in, or of rebooting could save me from this
situation.

Either the tools should be more cautious about restoring dangling
symlinks, files being watched by dbus et al, and permissions races
(Yeah, you'll have trouble writing that file into the directory you
faithfully restored as 0555. You have the technology to avoid this
problem), or it should warn the user against doing a full restore of
/home like that. I ended up restoring to a secondary location and
selectively pulling files into place again, in the end.

When upgrading my precise mail server to trusty, spamassasin errored out
the upgrade by running a login shell somewhere. I could tell it
happened because it ran /usr/games/fortune and tried to use some bash

[Bug 1310307] Re: spamassassin postinst uses a login shell

2014-04-20 Thread Nick Moffitt
Getting rid of the '-' in the above 'su -' fixes this neatly for me. It
was caused partly by the /etc/login containing some bashisms, because I
never expected dash to be used as an interactive shell on that system
