[Bug 1637075] Re: missing dependency to python-dbus

2016-11-04 Thread Nick W
I have the same output in terminal. When opening in Gui Gespeaker
attempts to open, and flashes for a few second on the task bar, and then
closes.

[Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-06-08 Thread Nick W
Can anyone briefly state what gvfsd-smb-browse does? I know samba is
used to connect to Windows networks. Perhaps clarity on this would help
people decide weather to keep, remove, or find a work-around to it.

[Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-05-12 Thread Nick W
I used the terminal to back up the gvfsd-smb-browse, then removed it. I
think I do not use this file for anything. It looks like the system is
still running fine as far as I can see. The CPU has a normal load after
boot up...

[Bug 1557797] Re: Big bug : CPU 100% load with gvfsd-smb-browse on Ubuntu Mate 16.04

2016-04-30 Thread Nick W
I would stop the smb-browse manually, but later another process would
start up again. I could not see it in the system monitor under
processes, and the smb-browse was still stopped. It did the same thing:
by taking %100 of one core.

I was also affected by this bug. It is after start up, then appears to
either time out or simply stops. I was told by another user that it
stopped occurring after some time.

[Bug 1441112] [NEW] Ubuntu Firefox homepage occasionally shows other languages

2015-04-07 Thread Nick W
Public bug reported:

Occasionally, last September and again now, the Ubuntu Firefox homepage
temporarily, for about 10 minutes, shows non ENglish languages. I had Arabic
last September and Spanish just now.

The problem is temporary and then reverts to English.

This is with Ubuntu 12.04 and the latest Firefox on both occasions
(currently 37). Latest updates have been applied.

No other sites seem to show non-English languages.

[Bug 578423] [NEW] gdm greeter lists no users when called from user switcher

2010-05-10 Thread Nick W.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After logging in normally, I select another user from the user list
(under the power button). The user session is not currently active. The
gdm greeter is shown, but no users are shown in the list, and there is
no possibility of logging in as the new user. I have to use ctrl-alt-f7
to get back to the original user. I would expect at least a password
prompt for the second user.

[Bug 426300] Re: Cannot add Karmic Koala computer to Ubuntu One

2009-09-28 Thread Nick W.
I found the eventual cause of my problem. It was a missing /etc/hosts
file - dont know how that happened. Copying in a default /etc/hosts
fixed the problem.

[Bug 299712] Re: the update manager doesnt work E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache-open() failed,

2009-05-09 Thread Nick W
I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 (installed within Windows XP) on an
Asus Eee PC 1000 (10/30mb SSD, 1mb RAM). Opening Update Manager showed
301 updates available (278mb) and when proceeding gave exactly the above
error messages.

Having consulted Keir Thomas' Pocket Guide Reference (I am a complete
Linux virgin, but happy with the old CPM DOS command line), I manually
ran:

sudo dkpg --configure -a

(working out the need for the sudo command took me a while !)

It worked and all the updates appear to have downloaded installed
successfully.
