The different checksums affects me too, I'm using the final release version of 9.10 on an Intel Celeron on a laptop. I did RAM tests with a live copy of 8.04, for many hours with no errors, so I don't think it's bad memory. 8.04 works (with default ext3), 8.04 alt w/ full disk encryption works,
