apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected sylvia

** Description changed:

Booting into kernel 4.15 results in no graphics acceleration. No nvidia
  module is loaded.

Manually loading the module results in:
  me@mysys /home/me $ sudo modprobe nvidia
  modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod-module.c:832 kmod_module_insert_module()
could not find module by name='nvidia_384'
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'nvidia_384': Unknown symbol in module, or
unknown parameter (see dmesg)
  me@mysys /home/me $

The weird thing: there is nothing in dmesg and nothing in syslog.
Reboot with kernel 4.13.0-43 (or older) and everything works again.

[Bug 1724639] Re: Bug in Kernel 4.13 : Intel Mobile Graphics 945 shows 80 % black screen

2018-03-23 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Same problem on Gigabyte GA-T1028X
Intel® Atom™ Processor N280(1.66GHz)
Mobile Intel® GS945 Express Chipsets
Intel® GMA 950

Adding this to /etc/default/grub helped me too:
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text

Additionally adding this to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line enabled the
touchpad (which wasn't working before):
i8042.noloop=1 usbhid.quirks=0xeef:0x1:0x40

[Bug 1550988] Re: Mouse pointer speed too fast

2017-03-17 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
For years I had to execute the following commands in a startup script, to make
my mouse usable:
xinput set-prop 11 "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" 2
xinput set-prop 11 "Device Accel Velocity Scaling" 5

Then, a while ago, these commands stopped working or made too little changes.
Therefore, I had to additionally include this command:
xset m 7/4 6

Now all these commands stopped working again or make too little changes.

Honestly: THIS IS SILLY!!

I love linux, but this not only is a crucial issue that persists over
many years, but additionally all workarounds get sabotaged after some
times!

I am assuming this started with update of libwebkitgtk-3.0-0 from
version 2.4.0-1ubuntu2 to 2.4.8-1ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04.1, but I am unable
to downgrade via synaptic or apt because the dependencies wants me to
uninstall half of the system then...

This is my current kernel:

nsk@sesta09:~$

But the behaviour did not changed with the last kernel upgrade.

I am using Gnome Flashback desktop environment with version
3.8.0-1ubuntu12.2

Additionally using compiz

nsk@sesta09:~$ compiz --version
Compiz 0.9.11.3

[Bug 1423083] [NEW] Mouse cursor invisible on synergy client with Ubuntu 14.04.1

2015-02-18 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Public bug reported:

After upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 on the synergy client side, there are
issues with the visibility of the mouse cursor:
a) When entering the synergy client screen, the mouse cursor is invisible while
being functional
b) The surprise: when leaving the client screen and entering again directly
afterwards, the mouse cursor is visible!

This leads to the uncomfortable workaround of switching two times from
synergy host to synergy client, before beginning the work on the synergy
client side.

The issue is reproducible and seems to be strictly repetitive:
1st enter of the synergy client screen: mouse cursor invisible
2nd enter of the client screen: cursor visible
3rd enter: invisible
4th enter: visible
... and so on

It seems to not like odd numbers!! :D

I tried the solution from this related bug report in debian, but this
didn't worked for me: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=729546

Any hints?

2015-02-18 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
So this is driving me crazy: after trying the other login session types,
now it works with the original session type as well!

I am sorry for repeatedly having reported a ghost bug, but the self-
solved solution of my system is appreciated as well, of course.

I just tried the other login combinations and identified that the
problem occurs only for Gnome Flashback (Compiz) session type, so this
may be a compiz problem?

I will close this bug report therefore - sorry for any inconvenience.

[Bug 916200] Re: Kernel module ipmi_si fails to load

2014-06-10 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
This is just an information for those that come to here due to matching
search engine keywords, it is only partially related to this bug, so all
others please ignore this.

If your system does not power off at all (including hang at reboot) you may
have fallen into this trap:
- install ipmitool
- recognise that your system does not meet the requirements for ipmi_si
(matching errors as described above)
- remove ipmitool

Now ipmi_si is still present in the system and you can see the
correspondig startup messages in system.log and it seems to be able to
prevent poweroff.

Solution: PURGE ipmitool (and maybe openipmi as well - at least there
was remaining configuration present in my system for this package as
well and therefore I purged it additionally).

After that, my system was able to reboot again and was able to completely
poweroff on its own:

2013-05-29 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
I am on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and suddenly encountering this problem, but only for
the right mouse button. It is sporadic, sometimes more often, sometimes less.
Really annoying if using easystroke as your system goes wild then with
executing batches of arbitrary mouse gestures :D :D
Never thought of this possibly being a hardware issue - will test a different
mouse, thx for that hint!

[Bug 660613] Re: COMP_WORDS bad array subscript in python completion

2013-04-05 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
I just encountered this on my server, which is debian with bash
4.1.5(1)-release, python 2.6.6 and kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64

But it works with calling the python cmd only:
python /etc/baTABsh_completion.d/

Exploit:
/usr/bin/python /etc/baTAB-bash: COMP_WORDS: Falscher Feldbezeichner.
sh

Notice: it does not matter what the path is

Since this is the only bug I found for this (german spelled) error
message, I am posting here, though I encountered it NOT on Ubuntu, but
Debian.

[Bug 1160294] Re: [snb] stale TLB entries - hang with random IPEHR

2013-03-27 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Thanks guys!
How can I find out when this will be backported to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

This error occurs to me with kernel 3.2.0-39 while it seems to work
without problems with kernel 3.2.0-38 on my production machine -
therefore I switched to the latter kernel for now.

I came here via
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1160151 and this is
how I am able to immediately reproduce the bug. I simply have to hover
over docky.

2013-01-12 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
I am sorry to report that Docky just crashed at update of other software
with version 2.2.0~bzr1835-0ubuntu1~12.04-dockycore1 from LP-PPA-docky-
core

The sorry docky crashed window is still open and I will try to find
out how to get those debug data into a text file. Sadly there is no
save this data button...

[Bug 838792] Re: Restart logs out, even when there are no other people logged in

2013-01-04 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
+1 for #24 and #52 this solved the issue for me while leaving auto-login
enabled

Did not tried to disable auto-login, so I don't know whether it would
have solved it as well. But I doubt it, because for me, freevo was the
culprit.

[Bug 1005946] Re: Docky 2.2 terminates with updates of any kind

2012-11-23 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
This happens to me to _all_ machines, regardless their upgrade history
(most of them have none) on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and is quite annoying as
there often updates come in!

So, everyone should be able to easily reproduce this with a fresh
install that - naturally - needs a lot of updates.

[Bug 1021183] Re: after some time when evolution runs in a wild loop of fetching messages and removing messages from cache

2012-10-02 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Today I catched Evolution at a stage where it seems to be in an earlier
stage of looping.

For this situation _it seems_ that it got trapped at fetching
informations of emails from the draft folder again and again and again.
Clearing the draft folder via the other clients and restarting Evolution
solved this.

[Bug 1021183] Re: after some time when evolution runs in a wild loop of fetching messages and removing messages from cache

2012-10-01 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
This bug affects me as well.

I did not encounter locks of the ldap account though.
But the hyper-activity of Evolution leads to maximum i/o usage which sooner or
later blocks the whole system. It is really hard to close Evolution then,
because even the mouse pointer needs minutes to move ...
It takes approx. 3-4 hours until this behaviour occurs.

The Exchange email account is used in parallel from 2 other clients as
well (Outlook).

[Bug 995284] Re: High idle load on 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 with 3.2.0-24-generic kernel

2012-08-07 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Ok, guys I am unsure whether I am at correct place here - so please help
me figure this out.

For me the increased cpu load since upgrade to 12.04 varies from bootup
to bootup (I don't know why and what I do differently). I don't feel the
system being slower though.

I identified the migration processes to eat up the cpu (see below). The
cpu load ranges from nearly unvisible to approx. a quarter when looking
at the system monitor panel applet (gnome classic mode). It may be that
it decreases over time ... but all this stuff is only subjective
observations as I don't know how to measure properly.

Please have a look at my ps aux output as this shows the relation of cpu
time the migration processes use, compared to e. g. banshee I am using
for this whole uptime mainly (besides opera):
http://pastebin.com/7PXM4WZX

nsk@sesta09:~$ uptime
 23:22:50 up 2:13, 1 user, load average: 1.48, 1.39, 1.44

Within this booted session I did nothing actively than hearing music
with banshee and browsing/emailing with opera, so everyone can see that
the migration cpu time is way too high. But I can not tell if those are
real cpu cycles or if this is a reporting problem.

nsk@sesta09:~$ uname -a
Linux sesta09 3.2.0-27-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 6 14:25:57 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Please ask me for more if something else will help!

[Bug 494400] Re: Opening folder with nautilus-gksu change desktop wallpaper to root one

2012-08-03 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Just to clarify the facts:
- This behaviour occurs when calling gksu nautilus in Ubuntu 12.04 with
latest updates installed
- Until now, I did not managed to manually remove the root wallpaper after it
was loaded
- The dialog for changing the wallpaper is run in root context after
reproducing the situation when called via right click on the desktop
- Several (additional, gui related) root processes stays in background even
after closing nautilus a long time ago
- Killing some of them prevents right clicks on the desktop, so the dialog for
changing the wallpaper with root rights is not accessible anymore
- Also files/starter from the root desktop folder are shown on the desktop
- This also works with another account than root

I could not reproduce it on all machines though!
Machine 1 (affected): fresh install of 12.04
Machine 2 (affected): 12.04 upgraded from several prior versions
Machine 3 (not affected): fresh install of 12.04

I have no clue what 1+2 could have in common, despite the fact that
those are the main working machines and 3 is not used that heavy
what I wanna tell you is that on 1+2 far more
experimenting/configurations is done while 3 receives clean
configuration solutions after they work on 2 - confused? me too! :D

Hope anything of the above is of at least little help!

Did not found anything, but found out that root processes are further running

Additionally one can right-click on the desktop and call the wallpaper settings

[Bug 510059] Re: Gvfs keeps asking for password when trying to mount Samba share

2012-07-25 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Hi guys, for me only this line helped:
client ntlmv2 auth = no

The SMB server I am accessing is an old NAS which don't support NTLMv2.
We had the same issues on all Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 machines
when trying to access the NAS, because the next gen windows systems have
NTLMv1 disabled by default.

So the problem seems to be that gvfs in Ubuntu 12.04 does not try other
authentication mechanisms if NTLMv2 is enabled!?

For now this workaround to disable NTLMv2 is no problem, because of the
lack of any important NTLMv2 share. But gvfs has to support access to
heterogenous samba network environments!

[Bug 1000272] Re: Eclipse crashes at startup in Ubuntu 12.04

wiiih, this finally solved the problem for me too!

Exactly those two packages libswt-gtk-3.5-jni and libswt-gtk-3.5-java
were on my system with this versionbump suffix and
/etc/alternatives/swt.jar pointed to /usr/lib/java/swt-gtk-3.5.1.jar

After removing them, complete removal of all eclipse packages and the

missing dependencies - aaaha!

[Bug 856348] Re: FolderViewScreenlet.py crashed with TypeError in isfile(): coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, NoneType found

2012-07-14 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Hello, encountering this error on Ubuntu 12.04, kernel
3.2.0-26.41-generic 3.2.19 with screenlets
0.1.7~bzr1197+20120627054523~precise1 from screenlets-dev PPA

Apport is telling me this crash, while FolderView's are running in
background, so I am unsure how to classify this. It happens after each
login.

I wonder if this is related to 2 of my 3 FolderView's that are not showing
icons for the content which worked at first run after installation of 12.04,
but never again afterwards.
The same config run on Linux Mint 12 without icons as well the last few months,
but this worked before - sadly I don't know after which upgrade this stopped
working.

[Bug 783129] Re: gksu doesn't remember password on Natty

[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives

I first encountered this bug on Lucid on one of my PCs. Skipped

in Natty this problem is still not solved!

Switching IDE/AHCI mode, Ubuntu/Mythbuntu installers, booting into live
environment and starting ubiquity from there all did not helped.

The workaround of removing the dmraid package finally succeeded with
current Natty installer of Ubuntu 64 Bit - thanks for that!

[Bug 643145] Re: Guake overlaps the second screen in a dual-monitor setup with a side panel

2011-04-20 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
Two points to contribute:
- For me the side panel is a screenlet, so this is none special but a problem
with all kind of windows that preserves screenspace I assume
- The width is automatically sized to perfectly fit (!) the remaining screen on
my first monitor as soon as I double click right besides the first terminal
title to spawn a second one!

Maybe there is simply a little call missing when initially opening Guake
with the first terminal?

Just found the button to open a new tab... :D
It works with this button as well.

But closing/reopening Guake reverts the width to bad state. A new

So the create new tab algorithm is the hero!

ports, controlled by Intel ICH, but I selected those hardware combination
_especially_ because of C300 and Marvell controller being able to communication
beyond sata 3G performance (benchmark proved that they really use that
bandwith).
As soon as there is the other operating system being able to work at that speed
(though I admit I never measured, because at work I have to work and cannot
play around with stuff like that for a long time...) there is no option for me
to downgrade to older interface specifitations.

[Bug 550559] Re: hdd problems, failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED

2011-01-13 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
For me its even worse so that Crucial RealSSD C300 only sometimes is
recognised even in GRUB stage. When I am lucky and it is found I rarely
can bootup until the end ... mostly it stucks at those Exception
Emask ... frozen messages.

Thing got worse with upgrade from Lucid (where bootup and working with
the system worked most of the time but those messages above where
omnipresent in syslog and i hoped to solve this with dist-upgrade
failed) - it was hard work to do the upgrade, I had to do it with
minimal system without GUI to not get stuck at some installation steps.
And now I can not use the system anymore.

Notice that Windows 7 works without a problem, though I notice some kind
of delay at bootup before the first bootup screen appears.

The system is Asus P7P55D-E LX and C300 connected to 6 gb/s Marvel
controller.
