[Bug 1386695] Re: [3.16.0-23] Resume from suspend/hibernation, GPU lock - possible regression

2014-12-01 Thread Nik.Th.
Sorry but I cannot confirm the fix. The latest kernel available
(3.16.0-25-33) is not working. Of course the -proposed repositories are
always enabled in my testing system.

I really don't know what happened, but I can assume that the latest BIOS
update changed something. Yes, I have updated my BIOS (just 2 days ago)
to the latest version.

As a conclusion:

1) The 3.16.0-25-33 from Ubuntu repositories is NOT working
2) This kernel here: http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp1386695-2-utopic/ also
NOT working

the only kernel that WORKS without problem is here:
3) http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp1386695-utopic/

Sorry for the confusion, I mean that I decided to update the BIOS now -
during the testing, but this would happen either way, so is better now
than future, I guess.

2014-12-01 Thread Nik.Th.
@penalvch I just got the latest Kernel (linux-image-3.16.0-26.34) but
unfortunately it does not work either.

The only kernel that still works is listed in comment #33 above.

I have attached the results.

[Bug 1386695] Re: [3.16.0-23] Resume from suspend/hibernation, GPU lock - possible regression

2014-10-31 Thread Nik.Th.
After another exhausting searching and testing, and again with the
**priceless** help of @apw in IRC,

I(we) may have detect the three responsible commits for the fix.
Probably they are three and not one, and certainly the MERGE in which I
refer on the above comment #27, it cannot be merged into Ubuntu kernel
or any older kernel.

The three commits I have combined(cherry-pick them together) - tested
and have been worked are:

5838ae610ff36777b8fce6f353c2417980c1a1fa
f2f9a2cbaf019481feefe231f996d3602612fa99
634ffcccfbe59d77652804e1beb415d3329b1bc6

Changes are not too many (deletions, modification, additions) and they
could be merged to an older Ubuntu kernel, but I'm not sure yet. I will
try to cherry-pick them into ubuntu-utopic.git and try to build.

[Bug 1386695] Re: [3.16.0-23] Resume from suspend/hibernation, GPU lock - possible regression

2014-10-30 Thread Nik.Th.
@jsalisbury

thanks for offering assistance and willing to help.

I've finished the process of reverse bisecting and I have spotted some
good(bad) commits.

With the **priceless** help of @apw in IRC I have learned the correct
procedure of reverse bisecting (it was a real learning curve!)

Here is the new log

git bisect start
# good: [fe82dcec644244676d55a1384c958d5f67979adb] Linux 3.17-rc7
git bisect good fe82dcec644244676d55a1384c958d5f67979adb

regression on certain boards
git bisect bad 5838ae610ff36777b8fce6f353c2417980c1a1fa
# first bad commit: [5838ae610ff36777b8fce6f353c2417980c1a1fa] drm/nv50/disp:
fix dpms regression on certain boards

Now I have to test the commits beginning by the first bad (good) and
building-installing-testing the kernel(s).

But is it possible that in a case, 2 or 3 commits combined would be needed, in
order to fix a problem?

The only commits relevant with my problem, as I can understand, are 3
(drm/nouveau/fbcon /nv50 /nv50/disp).

But maybe I need to combine them all together in order to fix the resume
problem, I'm not sure.

[Bug 1386695] Re: [3.16.0-23] Resume from suspend/hibernation, GPU lock - possible regression

2014-10-30 Thread Nik.Th.
Ok, further searching showed that the commit that actually solves this
problem is a merge branch 'for-linus' .

Specifically this one:

[7d1419f30cc5106196e54a282d7e115e698c95f6] Merge branch 'for-linus' of
git://git.samba.org/sfrench/cifs-2.6

I will say the truth that this one tricked me a lot. I didn't look at
the merge itself, but from the title and the description of the commit
(samba..), I considered this as the last one possible to fix my issue.

BUT, because this is a merge it has a bunch of stuff (patches) there and
some of them are directly related with the nouveau_fbcon and
nouveau_drm.

We can see the relevant patches here:

https://git.samba.org/?p=sfrench/cifs-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=7d1419f30cc5106196e54a282d7e115e698c95f6;hp=1209bbdff2f6bbffa6eb5823033bbd7b8799a5e2

I have “cherry-picked” from the second parent, which actually holds the
patches I care, and then built and tested the *real* bad kernel
(3.17-rc7) and it's worked as expected.

Do you want me to *try* building an Ubuntu kernel (say the affected one -
3.16.0-23-generic) with this commit(merge) and upload into a PPA,
or is not necessary ?

2014-10-29 Thread Nik.Th.
It seems I'm unable to narrow down the commit.

I can assure (because I have tested this twice) the last bad kernel is

3.17.0-rc7-utopic (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-

and the first good one

3.17.0-utopic (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-

I did all the steps to spot the good commit, but I couldn't.

It seems I'm unable to narrow down the commit.

I can assure (because I have tested this twice) the last bad kernel is

3.17.0-rc7-utopic (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc7-utopic/)

and the first good one

3.17.0-utopic (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.17-utopic/)

I did all the steps to spot the good commit.

Here is the bisect log from git:

git bisect start

[Bug 1386695] [NEW] [3.16.0-23] Resume from suspend/hibernation, GPU lock - possible regression

2014-10-28 Thread Nik.Th.
Public bug reported:

I'm testing the new development branch (Vivid Vervet), which currently
has the Utopic kernel 3.16.0-23-generic installed (proposed repositories
are enabled).

This problem might be a regression, and it has been reported

upstream:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81136

Problem:

When I try to resume from hibernation the screen hangs and the GPU is
locked. It cannot load the graphics properly.

Testing:

Unloading or blacklisting the nouveau driver and perform the following
test, seems to indicate that the problem is nouveau:

# echo platform /sys/power/disk
# echo devices /sys/power/pm_test
# echo disk /sys/power/state

Mainline:

The problem seems to be fixed in latest stable mainline kernel, for now
3.17.1-031701-generic (Utopic).

[Bug 1386695] Re: [3.16.0-23] Resume from suspend/hibernation, GPU lock - possible regression

2014-10-28 Thread Nik.Th.
Unfortunately it does not work with 3.16.6 . I've tested with and
without the nouveau.nofbaccel=1 parameter, but in both cases I had the
same behavior as of 3.16.4 (Ubuntu 3.16.0-23-generic).

I'm attaching the part of the log with the hibernation and resume
messages.

I really cannot spot any difference in logs, but maybe it's just me.

Here is the log from the 3.17.1 kernel, where resume works as it should.

[Bug 1367946] Re: thermald fails to start on AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945 Processor

2014-10-27 Thread Nik.Th.
I have an AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 Processor and I'm affected by this
bug as well.

But have a look at cpuinfo, maybe this problem is related to CPU
capabilities ? (I'm not sure).

2014-10-27 Thread Nik.Th.
@Srinivas Pandruvada

Apparently, above failure was my mistake, because I didn't change
properly the .xml file. I needed to change the PATH as well, from

/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/temp1_input

to

/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon1/temp1_input.

Your .xml configuration works as expected.

Thank you.

[Bug 1320480] Re: [systemd] Unit whoopsie.service failed to load on upgrade from trusty

2014-06-02 Thread Nik.Th.
If utopic has this service enabled by default, this problem will not exist.
This bug was an update about this service (whoopsie package) in order to inform
the developers of ubuntu/systemd, that it failed , like the nvidia-prime
package (same thing). Just to inform you about the problem.

I can upgrade all the packages without a problem if I boot with Init
(and not systemd) as PID 1, but this is not my purpose here. The purpose
is to inform you for any kind of problem I face on systemd (I have set
up a testing utopic system - upgraded from trusty in real hardware and
not VirtualBox or alike) just for systemd testing purposes.

[Bug 1317077] Re: systemd-modules-load.service fails: /etc/modules contains nonexisting module rtc

2014-05-08 Thread Nik.Th.
Martin,

Ok, that was my mistake obviously. It is just a warning like

'fuse' is builttin

the systemd-module-load.service is exiting with a SUCCESS status despite
this.

I will update the description (removing the fuse.conf related

2014-05-07 Thread Nik.Th.
Please update your system with

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

reboot and see if the error still exist.

I cannot reproduce it and maybe is not related to [systemd].

Also

systemctl list-units --failed

could give us a clue, suppose the problem is related to [systemd]

Thanks

[Bug 1317077] Re: systemd-modules-load.service fails: /etc/modules contains nonexisting module rtc

2014-05-07 Thread Nik.Th.
Martin,

my /etc/modules file has been modified by me, when I tried to fix the
failure of the service. But I can assure you that didn't contain
anything related to off or similar. Now it has only 'lp' module
there. Maybe it was related to 'rtc' ? because when I removed 'rtc'
module the warning:

Failed to insert 'off': Function not implemented

disappeared.

Also, if you can take care off this fuse.conf file inside /lib/modules-
load.d/ directory it would be better. I mean, this configuration file
has the same impact on the systemd-module-load.service, it causes its
failure.

Thanks

[Bug 1313271] Re: [systemd] boot stopped at 'authenticate and authorize users...'

2014-05-07 Thread Nik.Th.
Yes, in order to boot and debugging systemd (reporting bugs..etc) you
must boot with systemd as PID 1, or else you will get similar errors.

It you have decided to participate in systemd testing, you should boot
the PC always with systemd as PID 1.

I think we can mark this bug as 'invalid', in order to keep the developers
focused on other bugs.
If you agree mark it as such.

2014-05-07 Thread Nik.Th.
Dimitri,

on my machine I get

fuse: /lib/modules-load.d

Should I open a separate bug about this ?

I don't have OSS Proxy Daemon installed (it's not installed by default)
, but I think FUSE it is. (it has a standard priority instead of
optional).

Did you get any errors on osspd module load ?

I've got this problem as well today. Of course the affected package is
older version(1.2.2-1ubuntu2) than fix released
version(1.2.2-1ubuntu3), but as a workaround you can use the dpkg
--force-overwrite --install command.

Oh yes. This is an /etc/samba/smb.conf file mistake. I tried what @Cliff

[Bug 1257124] [NEW] ubuntu-software-center functionality depends on /var/cache directory

2013-12-02 Thread Nik.Th.
Public bug reported:

This is fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS. Fully updated.

I recently moved the /var/cache directory to tmpfs for my own reasons.
According to FHS [1] the /var/cache contents should be deletable. Also
according to an accepted answer on askubuntu.com [2] there should be no
problem on deleting the contents of /var/cache directory.

Reproduce:

Move /var/cache to tmpfs via /etc/fstab by adding the following line

tmpfs /var/cache tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0

reboot your system and try to open ubuntu software center.

What I expected to happen:

ubuntu software center recreates the folders/files that are needed in
order to function correctly (i.e. like apt does).

[Bug 1255428] Re: LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2013-11-27 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1255428

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

This is a known problem. Please see here on how to debugging blacklight:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight

Your slider works for me also :-)

Here is a thread on ubuntuforums.org . See another workaround related to ACPI
events.

[Bug 1255428] Re: LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2013-11-27 Thread Nik.Th.
Probably apport expects the /etc/apt/sources.list file to exist. I would
suggest to create one and try again.
Also it would be a good idea to open a new bug about this behavior of apport
and see what developers have to say.

2013-11-26 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

About the
Fontconfig error: /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-khmer.conf, line 14: out of memory

This simlink is disabled by default in Kubuntu 13.10. A workaround on
this problem should be

sudo chmod 644 /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-khmer.conf

[Bug 1254581] Re: USB stops working after a while

2013-11-25 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1254866] Re: I have my Firefox username, password, and sync key but I cannot click the next button to complete the sync setup?! Neither the next button nor the cancel button press?!

2013-11-25 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Could you please try with another profile ?
Maybe your profile has been corrupted.

Open Firefox from the terminal with the following command

firefox -ProfileManager

Create a new profile and test it from there.

If it works, then you should think to reset your firefox. Help →
Troubleshooting information → Reset Firefox.

[Bug 1254261] Re: xhci regression: usb 3.0 hdd disconnects immediately

2013-11-24 Thread Nik.Th.
Hello,

it would be good for the bug's life-cycle to open a report upstream in
order to inform the USB 3.0 developers

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/

Add a link here (when this done) and also add a link in the upstream
report to point in this bug report.

My disk (comment #22) it's NTFS filesystem, so I cannot confirm
something on ext4 filesystem. Maybe this is due to the filesystem
combined with the USB 3.0 support.

Thanks for this report.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please try to perform the installation again. This time
make sure that the LiveCD/DVD was burned in the lowest speed.

Also you can try with a Live USB image. See here on how to create one:

Also perform an MD5SUM before you burn the CD/DVD or USB stick. See here how:

[Bug 1254515] Re: fglrx (not installed): fglrx kernel module failed to build

2013-11-24 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug.
AMD/ATI has decided to drop the support for Linux on cards 2xxx-4xxx. This is
why you couldn't find clear instructions on how to install the fglrx driver.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=amd_catalyst_legacy2num=1

Ubuntu (and Linux in general) cannot do anything about that.

In case you want to use the fglrx driver , I would suggest to stick in a
version of Ubuntu which xserver-xorg-core package is under 1.12 version. (e.g
Ubuntu 12.04.1)
or
you can use radeon driver which is included in Ubuntu and is enabled by
default.

[Bug 1254569] Re: ubuntu has no flashplayer that works with slimboat

2013-11-24 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better. However, it seems that you are not using a software
package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories. Because of this
the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Please
report this bug to the provider of the software package. Thanks!

If you are interested in learning more about software repositories and
Ubuntu, check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories

You have to know that the last version of Flash Player that Adobe made
available for Linux (Linux in general not Ubuntu only) is 11.2 . A
newer version for Linux does not exist and probably will never be.

Linux and Ubuntu cannot do anything about that. It was Adobe's decision.

If you need a newer version of flash player I would suggest to use
Google Chrome. It has the latest flash player integrated.

I'm closing this bug and converting it to a question in the support
tracker. You can also find help with your problem in the support forum
of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at
http://askubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org.

Thanka for the report.

Best Regards
NikTh

[Bug 1254261] Re: xhci regression: usb 3.0 hdd disconnects immediately

2013-11-23 Thread Nik.Th.
Hello,

it seems a bit strange because the CurrentDmesg.txt (comment #9) doesn't
show the problem. Also I have Trusty Tahr installed and a WD USB3.0
external HDD and I haven't such problems. Either I connect it to USB2.0
or 3.0 port.

It would be helpful if you provide additional information during the
connection of HDD.

Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and write:

watch -n1 dmesg | tail -n 30

then connect the HDD and post back here the lines will be produced.

Best Regards
